If you can see the middle knife the fighter bowie in my profile pic I made that handle from a block of ancient bog oak. ))
Nice stuff. Feels very nice in my hand to grip and everything and I love the deep rich black colour. It's almost like transluscent like you can see deep into it.
Nice to work with too. Only problem it's a little soft so it'll get dints and scratches in it pretty easily but no bug deal.

Quite amazing, thank you. I'm lucky enough to have some swamp Kauri which is approx 25'000 years old. Compared to this bog oak it looks freshly felled but that's deceiving. Put a chainsaw through it and you get the occasional spark and a very dull chain, lol.

The only water the bogs receive comes from rain, creating a very acid heavy water condition - the same tannic situation you have when preparing leather. These bogs are exclusive to Northern Europe. Sincerely, the Historian

That is some gorgeous oak. I don't think I've ever seen bog oak before tbh. The grain color looks amazing, and I can only imagine how beautiful this wood would look sanded down, epoxied, sanded again, then polished to a glass like finish. I'm betting it would look amazing. I always thought of doing a petrified wood coffee table with matching end tables until I found out how much the pieces the size I'd want would cost. Needless to say, I don't ever foresee any petrified wood tables in my house. Lmfao

There is another kind of this wood. Oak that has been in bog for only a hundred years or so. It is not black, but has a beautiful blue colour like indigo. It is so rare and expensive that it is most of the time used as veneer because a simple log goes into the ten thousands in sale.

"STOP THE CHAINSAW!" Safety does matter.. Sad to see people who work with chainsaws for a living NOT know what they are doing. First, you never start a chainsaw that way. Always hold the chainsaw with trigger firmly between your knees or step on it while on the ground then pull the cord. Second, it's ok to saw a log that is only supported on the ends if done correctly. Which is to cut down from top about a third of the way. Remove saw and put a wedge in cut. Then start cutting from the bottom and saw nonstop until you reach the top cut at which time the log will split without getting saw blade pinched.

As for all the negative comments, this tree fell into a bog a long time ago, and somebody found it and dug it out. This tree was NOT cut down in the present. So, slow your roll, haters! Sorry to say, but these guys look like amateurs. They don’t know how to operate a chainsaw. Don’t know how to cut a log that size. No eye protection. Dangerous use of a floor jack and even put it under the wrong side of the cut for how the log was supported. Cut the base of the tree in the same wrong way. It’s a wonder no one got hurt! Not to mention, a log that heavy needs heavy equipment to move it around. All of that manpower was kind of silly.
