  • The new MSR Xpedition Helmet might be the best budget-friendly ADV helmet on the market. It's loaded with a ton of features and comes in at a ridiculously low price point of $180 US. I've been wearing and using mine for a couple weeks now and it might be the best ADV helmet for beginners out there.
    I've gotten quite a few questions lately about motovlogging helmet setup for motorcycle content creation and I figured I'd take this opportunity to walk you through the process of motorcycle helmet camera and microphone setup as I added them to this new ADV helmet.

    Aaaaand that's why you sound a little muffled when you vlog in your helmet. You have taken all the semblance out of the microphone by wrapping the entire element in fur, then tape. The fur is for mic's that don't have windscreens. A better alternative is to just add a 2nd larger windscreen over the smaller one and secure it from the wire. Just a thought from a life long audio engineer. :) Love your channel and hate you for making me buy more stuff!! lol

      Also an audio engineer here, Im not sure what sort of recording experience youre coming from so dont take this as a criticism, just my own experience from working on a LOT of low budget produtions in uncontrolled noise environs. Yes, I agree that the wind protection removes some frequencies and might make the audio quality less than studio quality. But a little muffling is alot better than what you would get from these ultra small diaphragm mics if they were unprotected from the wind, road noise, breath, etc., and, when you have an unavoidably non optimized audio environment, there is some straight AMAZING software and forensic techniques available to refine the audio in post these days.
      Anyways, like I said at the beginning, this isnt a criticism of your experience based opinion, just my own experience basd perspective for contrast for those who bother reading us.

      @@givemeanaxe I think they're just saying Ben would be better served using the fake fur like a fur windscreen.

    • @givemeanaxe
      @givemeanaxe 2 месяца назад +1

      @@donewhiskey eh... Theres a reason you dont see boom mics on windy location shoots using only the foam cage and no fur.
      Theres a reason why presenters on parades and sports games that are wearing lavs have fur and not just foam.
      Foam just isn't enough in those conditions. I dont believe it is for a helmet mic on a motorcycle either. The goal is consistently usable audio. The less rerecording you do, the better because recording a motovlog from the back of a moving bike takes a lot of time and energy.
      I highly doubt that Dork hasnt tried using only the foam. I highly doubt he hasnt tried using the fur with no tape. Sound recording is ALWAYS an experiment in "what works best TODAY, for me, in this environment?" And whats working for him, is working. Otherwise we wouldnt be watching right?
      See you on the trails friend!

    • @donewhiskey
      @donewhiskey 2 месяца назад

      @@givemeanaxe Are you saying that one should use fake fur on their mic to mitigate the wind?

    • @givemeanaxe
      @givemeanaxe 2 месяца назад +1

      @@donewhiskey No. Im saying that sound recordists seeking reliable capture in professional productions use it for a reason. And that anyone recording audio should use the best settings, equipment, and setups for their unique recording environment.
      Airpressure is mechnical force on the diaphragm of the microphone. Which translates to electrical impulse, which translates to noise. If youre overmodulating your microphone because of wind, plosives, etc., then you need to diffuse that mechanical force. Generally, mic placement-> the afformention foam windscreens->dead cats. THAT is generally as far as it goes. Then you resort to multiple microphones for coverage and editing. But, any live recordist worth their ohms is gonna develop nonstandard ways to compensate and capture reliable audio when they dont have optimial situations or equipment.
      Which is what dork has done here.

    Dude just found you a couple weeks ago. I’ve been on the verge of getting back into riding after many years. My kids have dirt bikes and my wife and I have a side by side but I’ve wanted to do some solo moto camping for many years. Well I finally picked up a 2021 klx 300 that was already kitted out. Only had 190 miles on it! Any way I’m currently binge watching your channel and used your Rocky Mountain link to buy some MSR riding gear based on your reviews. Thanks for what you do and cheers from the Ozarks!

    I hate to be that guy, but I am surprised that your audio works so well with that setup. It must be picking up off the top of that boom mic, through the untaped dead cat. Tucked the way it is I wondered if the dead cat was necessary on top of its existing foam, especially after adding a second layer on your chin ;). It must work, because you sound great on your in-ride narration.

    I use the hohem mic-1 its like a DJI mic but much cheaper and its does have a card in each unit, don't motovlogg much only for my own memories , the mic is ease to position in the helmet since I have a few helmet its easy to move around and also like the dango grip. Alain & Yellow ps your is also very interesting I might try it on one helmet Touratech adventuro

    😢 I used to have my mic in speaker pocket side of head wrapped with random fluff diy dust mop style stuff. I have a round felt no slip dot stuck over mic hole on camera. The things would stick under items not to scratch a table. Recently bought a deadcat put on mic, moved back down in corner by mouth, and stuffed another dust mop in front of. Wind noise still very loud especially on my scooter.

    I noticed when you were first mounting the camera mount and then again at 10:17 the helmet is pointed at the very front, below the vent and the camera mount has a flat portion that appears to be about 1/2" long or so. As a result of this, it looks like the camera mount's 3m tape isn't totally adhered to the front pointy portion of the helmet. Dirt and water could get in there and compromise the adhesion of the rest of the tape - has this been an issue?

    Hey man, if you don't mind me asking, what is your height and weight? I'm going through all your adventure bike reviews/videos and am trying to figure out what might be best for me. I myself am 6'4" and about 290 lbs. I sat on a KLR750 and felt a little big for it. Sat on a tenere 700 at a different location and while size wise it felt a little better, I'm wondering if the sacrifice in comfort, increased price and slightly more accommodating size is worth it over the KLR. I also don't see myself going off road 24/7. Nothing crazy technical either.
