      Hey Big D - Have you worn the Klim Krios and the Scorpion 950/960?? If so, how do noise levels compare between them? My Bell MX9 is a nice entry level helmet but its very noisy. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    One of the hardest things to get people to understand is that features don't matter as much as fit. It doesn't matter how many vents, or a drop down visor, or MIPS, or anything else if the helmet doesn't fit you.

    • @steveh545
      @steveh545 Год назад +4

      Yes to this. I so wanted a Klim to be in the cool club. It just didn’t fit my head. Or vice versa. Went with an Arai. Much heavier. No transition lenses, but it fit. For your first helmet I recommend shopping local. Don’t try local and buy online. Support your local shops. At least until you figure out what brand fits your head.

    • @roviwoteap2375
      @roviwoteap2375 Год назад +4

      Totally agree there. So many helmet reviewers don’t emphasise how important the fit is. One thing recently learnt when buying a new helmet is to have a choice “A” and a choice “B” from two separate manufacturers. I really wanted the Scorpion helmet, as mentioned here, but my head shape didn’t agree with their sizing and shape... felt “pressure points” on the medium, and the large was just a little too big. I seemed to be in between sizes. My second choice was a Nolan N70-2 X, which fitted like a glove. So, when choosing a new helmet, it is important to recognise any pressure points on your head. Don’t let the sales person con you into thinking they’ll ease in time - they won’t.

    I actually got my AT-950 three years ago as a snowmobile helmet, which it works pretty good as with the heated visor. When summer came I started wearing it on the road, and it works good at that too. I have zero complaints with the helmet other than the color, it's what the shop had in January in my size! The modular capability is pretty nice. I'm looking forward to seeing some reviews the new AT-960

    All great recommendations. My only thing to add is get the helmet that fits you the best. Don’t just order a helmet based on reviews. Everyone’s head is different, so at least going to try on helmets and get fitted is the best option. You may find the one you really want based on looks fits horribly, which will ruin your ride. As always, top notch content from Dork!

    If you ride year round I recommend the winter model (I think it's called Ellwood) with the amber lense. It comes with a chin cover and removable nose cover that prevent fogging on colder days.
    I believe it's also pin lock ready. Same price as the regular one too.
    Works down to a whindchill of -2°F and has stood up to some low sides already.
    Scorpion customer support is also outstanding. They sent a release mechanism for no charge after it wouldn't open after I crashed with it on.

    I went with the HJC DS-X1 for $200 and have no regrets. It’s not my first motorcycle helmet, I’ve owned ECE rated helmets in the past, and this helmet does not lack in quality in any way compared to those other helmets. The only thing I had to do to the HJC is purchase different size cheek pads separately in order to get the helmet to fit properly, but HJC has excellent customer service and getting parts such as internals, and pin lock shields is not a problem. I tried that AFX-FX41 on at the shop when I purchased the HJC, and that helmet seemed really big on my head. Not loose fitting, but just proportionally over sized, like an astronaut helmet. HJC is the only brand that I’m familiar with that’s not ECE rated that I would trust, because the quality is there. Not to say there aren’t others out there, I’m just not familiar with any.

    I picked up an AT950 because I like the modular and that's what Amanda was using at the time. Great helmet, but a little heavy.
    I also scooped up a MX-9, but not the adventure. Works great on smoking hot days to flow the most air possible.

    I have a Shoei GTAir for my streetbikes, but my dumbass cheapskate brain thought "it's a cheap slow bike, I don't wanna invest much in dirt gear and can't get hurt too badly!" BOY did I learn a hard lesson.
    Very happy to see the MX9 is still on the list, bought mine like 3 weeks after the crash because i didn't realize how long recovery would be. Can't wait to get back to riding, it'll be 6 months on the 18th.

    One small thing of note on street helmets but suspect it applies to your Scorpion ADV helmet as well. In some cases, the same helmet will hold an ECE rating in Europe and not in the US (Schuberth and Scorpion have both done this in my personal experience). Part of it is the optical quality test for ECE but I also suspect there is a per helmet "tax" for the ECE sticker as well. Regardless, if the same helmet is rated ECE in Europe, I would not stress about it merely carrying a DOT rating in the US.

    I have the Shark Evo One 2. It’s a modular that flips the chin bar to lock behind the head. It’s a pretty good helmet because it’s normally shaped and you can open the chin bar if you really need the air. I can’t add goggles or use a peak, but if you’re not dealing with roost or branches it can be a good adv option.

    I'm questioning the need for an ADV helmet altogether. Is it really so bad to wear a street helmet when off-roading? I consciously picked a street helmet with good peripheral vision and a built-in sun visor, so that's covered. I think I will stick with my HJC C70 helmet for now and see how that goes...

      As he stated in the vid the peak visor helps deflect limbs and it helps a ton with glare when your visor is coated with dust. The chin bars are longer which gives space in front of your mouth to accommodate heavier breathing. The chin bar length along with the larger visor openings accommodate goggles. They flow more air at low speeds. There’s alot of benefit to an adventure helmet but it really comes down to how much off pavement riding you do

    The Scorpion EXO AT960 has been out in the US since early January. It is very similar to the 950, but I feel that it's made of slightly better material. If your head is longer than round, you MAY have an issue with forehead pressure. I had this same issue with the 950. My 960 might not be fully broken in yet but the only part that is slightly uncomfortable initially is the forehead area, so you MIGHT want to get a size larger. I was disappointed that I don't have must space around my chin. I removed the chin flap to get more air. A pinlock shield and pinlock are not available now, but two venders are pretty sure that they will come in "the spring." The Scorpion ADX-2 is the European version of the 960, so a pinlock MAY fit and be available. Check to see if that's right.

      Did you buy the true size or size up? My heads like 59cm but some comments say the at950 runs small. Is the 960 in the same boat? Should I go XL?

    • @sdefiel3719
      @sdefiel3719 Год назад

      @@Jrekt I'm right between 62 and 63cm. Most of my helmets are XL. This 960 I bought is an XXL. Everything feels right except that I still haven't worn it for a whole day. I might still have an issue with the forehead, but if I do it's a very slight extra pressure that should or could work itself out. Again, it your head is slightly more than _intermediate oval,_ you might go XL. The more I think of it I'd hazard to say go with the XL at 59cm.
      Best of luck.

      Don't feel like your doing anything wrong for using flipup or full face.
      Adv helmets are mostly overpriced gimmick sold to older rich dudes who have to have everything "adv" without even understanding why.
      Most of them don't vent better than good road helmets and often are even heavier which is insane!
      I'm getting rpha 90 or neotec2 and I'll be offroading the snot of out them.
      Also fighting with noise by helmet is stupid, always use earplugs if u ride longer than half hour.

    My wife just purchased the Shoei Hornet X2, she wears an XS. Some (or most) brands have few shell sizes so when you get down to the XS the shell is huge, something to consider when looking at helmets is the shell size relative to your head size, and how different brands you are considering compare. One note about the AT950: it's ECE rated in the EU, but only DOT in the US. While I highly doubt that they make the US helmets in a different factory, and therefore it's likely the same helmet (and hence actually ECE rated), it technically isn't. I love my AT950, and given the fact that it's ECE in Europe (where ECE is required), I'm happy with it.

    Finally chose and bought a bike for my old bod. So now I finally have a bike again and it's being delivered soon (2023 CRF300L). Wanted something easy so I, hopefully don't crash and burn.
    Now I need a helmet! So what do you feel is best and what are you currently wearing? I am an old, 68, returning rider after many years.

      If you're just getting back into it and don't want to break the bank the Bell MX-9 Adventure is what I'd go with.
      Currently wearing a Shoei Hornet but haven't decided how much I like it yet. Not enough seat time.

      @@DorkintheRoad I know there is dust and possible rain and stuff to deal with. But what I hear you saying is you would probably go with an ADV helmet over the Motocross/dirt style helmets? This is a key deciding point for me. On the Shoei, read a review that says it's a bit warmer than the Arai XD4, ventilation not as good. Did you try the XD4(Itchy Boots wears)? I tried on some Shoei(Evo) and, not the Hornet as they didn't have it, and the Shoei are very comfortable so I will say that.

    SORRY to BOTHER You with this petty question Ben. As a Viewer of LiveStreams, I do not fully understand how a Host asking your side chat members if they want to type there Username works to find their Channel. Their Username is already listed, right.? While there RUclips Handle is unsearchable, correct.? I often cannot find channels to side chat members if their Username is too common. Wouldn't asking them to type a TITLE of one of their video be more effective.? I need to watch one of your LiveStreams to see your method.

    I purchased a helmet for school prior to knowing what bike I'd get lol.. So now I'm on a T-7 with a street bike, HJC helmet and it bothers me a bit.. I know.. I know.. it shouldn't and "it's just a helmet style"... I have no intentions of getting out deep in the rough anytime soon but, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to buy an ADV helmet...😅

    May I ask what size you wear with the Klim helmet (and if that’s not too indescrete to ask your head circumference)? I habe no Klim dealers near where I live and I know its not a good idea to buy a helmet without wearing it first but id like to try a krios. Now my head size is right in the middle of where Klims sizing chart decides to go with the smaller or bigger shell size. What should I do?

      It’s a general rule of thumb, but there are other factors involved. Mostly it depends on how it was treated…dropped alot…taken impacts….stored out in a garage in hot climates or inside a conditioned space…. How many actual miles worn…etc. most just replace it to keep things simple
