      Ah yes, good ol' Yammie straight up ignoring that there are markets outside the US where anything over 250cc suffers massive tax penalties, or where things like A1 and A2 licenses exist. Or that 20hp and 70+ MPG are actually desirable in a commuter bike that has to do nothing but get you from one side of town to the other during rush hour.
      The GSXR250R however, yes that thing isn't worth it at all. The CBR-250RR-R and ZX-250R however are freaking amazing, but those are not beginner bikes with their tiny 4 cyl screamers.

      @fermitupoupon1754 Buying RE with 20 hp at 191 kg as a commuter city bike is nonsensical, when you can get a solid scooter, like Honda PCX: way nimbler, way cheaper, way more fuel-efficient, waaay lighter, with automatic gearbox and better brakes, and for which in EU you don't even need A1, if you have B.
      This RE is for no-one and serves no purpose. The only advantage I can imagine is a slightly better performance on holey roads, but then there are better and cheaper alternatives for that, too.

  • @hippolyta3638

    Like you said, the RE 350s are really neat in other countries. Definitely not fit for high speed cruising if you live in the US, the thumper just does not output enough power (plus at least here they're electronically limited to 120kph/75mph) but in the places where RE cares about making sales - such as India, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Bangladesh, Thailand or Nepal - the price is impossible to beat due to the CKD plants, the performance is (borderline) enough for the roads, and both maintenance and insurance are cheap as hell. For comparison, in Argentina, where an average salary is about 400-500 US dollars a month, a Classic 350 is around $5,400 US dollars, while something like a Duke 390 is $11,000, a Honda CB300 Twister is just shy of $8,000 or a Yamaha R3 is nearly $12,000.

    • @hippolyta3638
      @hippolyta3638 15 дней назад +3

      As an aside, the XR250 ($8,000) and the new 300 are *all the rage* here despite being expensive, to the point they are also by far the most stolen motorcycle in the country. Most insurance companies will refuse to cover XRs against theft or destruction because how common it is for them to get stolen or ridden by maniacs.

      @jlrutube1312 14 дней назад +1

      @@eviljan8158 Yes but the Autobahn has lots of lanes so the slow moving vehicles aren't in the way. In lots of other places roads are two lanes .... meaning you are going to be in the way of the faster traffic. Plus, I live in America in Oklahoma. We often have a headwind of 40 mph with gusts of 80 and the traffic is going 80 mph. So if you get on your little 20 hp bike trying to go 80 to keep up with traffic against a 40 mph wind and you start going uphill you will find out really quick that 20 hp isn't enough. But I'm happy that in Germany 20 hp is enough.

      Yup. Same here in India. Here the 350 RE's are a midsize bike. Not entry level.
      Literally everyone starts on 100-125cc scooters/bikes. Most people use them as commuters & the only consideration is comfort & fuel efficiency.

      Interesting. Here in Latvia a 600cc bike is considered a beginner bike. A 750-800cc is a middle-weight and anything above or including 1000cc - a "proper" bike. There's very little demand for anything below 500-600cc. But that's mainly because you're riding a 600cc bike on the exam and you're already used to this kind of power. So when you get your driving license, you don't really see the point to settle for anything smaller than 600cc.

    You seem to still think we’re back in the 2010s when bikes were purely recreational! With inflation, stagnant wages, and the average new car costing over 40 grand people are going to have to start buying bikes to replace their second car. To save money using a bike requires some brutal compromises. The bike has to get great mileage (my car gets 42 mpg, a commuter bike should get 70-80), be cheap to insure, be easy to maintain (meaning do-it-yourself because dealers are $$$$) and thus simple (anyone can handle air cooled, one cylinder, two valve chain drive bike) with a very low cost of entry. In a harsh economy a recreational bike is a luxury most won’t be able to afford. Unless current trends change, of course.

    In Latin America, the Honda XR 150L is a very desirable bike, it’s almost $3200 here, I agree, too expensive for 0 updates in almost 3 decades just cause it says Honda. Down here small displacement bikes are the norm, a tool and a common means of transportation, unlike in the US which is 9/10 a toy. Test rode one in a Demo Day setup. It was quick to go and stop. Just that I'm too old to put up with that much weight on my hands/wrists for long. I was gripping the tank with my legs as often as I could remember to do so, and that helped keep it off my hands. I just prefer a more upright stance like a naked bike. But if you want a beginner sport bike, the CFMOTO 450SS is quite good, at least in my test ride. No clue on the long-term reliability.

    I do own an XR 150 and it is to be used properly, this is a farm bike with a large tank and decent comfort. It can go into some limited offroad and tops roughly at 100 KPH. This is a perfect bike to learn driving if you use it for what it is designed ie not high speed and not single trail. Big advantage over trail bikes is better saddle and high autonomy but still very light weight. Furthermore, repairs are cheap which is a plus for a new rider which will fall more than once. Now, it is clear it is an entry level bike with primitive instruments and equipment but it is a very good bike if you live in the countryside or in a city but don't travel on fast highways. I wouldn't dismiss it for a first bike as long as you use it as per the way it was designed. For the Versys 300, i absolutely enjoyed it, it had decent power (40 HP), confidence inspiring drive and able to go on light trails too. Power is good enough to go on any highway without problems, weight is manageable and engine is bullet proof. True it doesn't have sophisticated tools like TC but this is not needed for that power. You don't need to be an IT engineer to drive it which makes it in my view a very good first bike, Now, i have KTM 790 ADV but I still miss the Versys which was easy to drive anywhere thanks to the weight. XR may be questionable as first bike unless proper environment but I wouldn't dismiss Versys at all whatever the place.

    I appreciate your videos like this. I am one of those middle aged guys that just got my license and am looking for a good beginner bike. I have done way too much research on what bike I should get as my first one. I am looking for something to be able to ride back and forth to work on. My commute is 7 miles in northwest CT so great backroads, but also looking for something I can cruise on for hours on end. My top three I am looking at are the Royal Enfield shotgun 650, Honda Shadow Phantom 750, and Honda Rebel 1100. Midlife crisis buy yes... looking to break the sound barrier no, just want a good all around bike I wont get tired of that can be comfortable if I decide to hop on the highway and travel a few hundred miles. Its good to know what NOT to look into. Thanks :)

    • @amerigo88
      @amerigo88 15 дней назад +1

      You better be fairly short legged to ride a Shadow Phantom. I test rode the Rebel 1100 and it is a screamer - which I loved. Afraid I cannot recommend it for a noob as carrying too much speed into a corner is a cinch on the Rebel that shares the Honda Africa Twin engine. That's what gets most new riders killed - too fast and deep into a curve, then instinctively clamping the front brake lever and losing control of the bike. FYI, started riding at age 55 and am only three years in, riding my third and fourth bikes these days - KLR 650 and Harley Dyna Street Bob. I threw a leg over a Shotgun 650 and it felt and looked great. Good luck with the Royal Enfield reliability. Ridershare platform for P2P renting motorcycles reports having the most reliability problems (renters complaining of problems that can interrupt a rental period) with Royal Enfields. FWIW. YMMV

    It sounds like the "experts" are finally realizing that the best street All around beginner bike, IN THE US, is the 450 class (400-500cc). I'm celebrating my 50th year of riding street motorcycles in 2025. I may in fact be near the end of that journey as I have had several medical problems this past year including passing away from a heart attack only to be brought back, a couple of limiting medical issues, and now looking forward to back surgery. In the mid to late '70s I experimented from a CB100 to a GS1000, and the 450cc was the winner. For decades I have listened as the experts recommended the 250 class (200-300cc) which can rarely reach a GPS 60 mph on any kind of incline. And is seriously lacking in a big part of what we were looking for: handlebars that give you a good tug when accelerating, being able to get away at a stoplight from most cars, and and bringing a girlfriend along (back when they weighed in at 115-135) and still have enough power. 125s are great and Indonesia, and 150 to 250 in India, and a 350 is a lovely ride in Scotland, but I'm glad to see the experts starting to say that 150 to 350 is lacking in the US!

    How dare you impugn the Versys 300. I've owned a LOT of bikes in my time, from big displacement fours to big V twins and 125 scooters. The X is one of my favorites. No torque? No problem. It revs to the moon. You compare it to a KTM (bankrupt and unreliable) and a CRF300 Rally (even less than no balls, terrible on-road, not even the same kind of mission) and a new Kaw that you can't buy yet. Whya? The Versys has am excellent fine handling and ride balance, is very lightweight, and very reliable, and offers ABS- an absolute requirement. I can throw it on a hitch carrier on the Jeep in about a minute. With a Corbin seat, tall windshield and a few teeth off the rear sprocket the thing eats miles, loves curves, and is comfortable for hours. I don't think you can find more used motorcycle for the buck. Kawasaki should put the old Ninja 400 motor on it - I'd buy a new one in a minute. Have you ever actually ridden one, or just spouting off here?

    Honestly love the classic 350 I take mine everywhere from highways to back roads, even on ohrv trails and even ride in the winter here in the northeast states. And it handles most terrain really well especially with dual sport tires. I'm running kenda k270 rear and k60 fronts loud as hell tires but my bike seems to love them. Overall the honestly worst thing about the Royal Enfields is the waiting time on parts when you order them lol.

    2:35 My 13 y/o brother upgraded from a clapped out ttr 125 to a xr150. For him that’s a perfect bike, but I have a crf300l. If you’re a beginner dual sport rider I recommend the 300, it just has more capability.

    I rode a duke 200 on a course before I got my own bike. As someone quite tall it was awful. The flare on the tank for the riders knees didn’t fit me so I had to either sit on the pillion seat or have my legs flared out like I was riding a horse

    The RE 350s are actually very cool and characterful - as a 2nd or 3rd bike in your stable, not as your only bike. Also an A1 compliant Gixxer 125 is actually faster.

    This is probably the first and only video that talks down on the Versys-X 300 !! I happen to own one and it's a great bike. Very light, nimble, has low seat height, powerful enough to be cruising at highway speeds, good MPG, and is very versatile.
    I watched many many reviews about the Versys-X 300 before buying mine and ALL reviews were good. Ryan's video on FortNine concerning the VX300 is actually fantastic. Very well made and creative. Perhaps it is out of jealousy that you Mister the Noob used part of his content to talk trash !?
    Unlike Ryan, you are so immature, unprofessional and disrespectful. You talk and act like a teenager. Hard to believe you still have so many subscribers !! I stopped watching your stuff months ago and only came here as i was very surprised to hear you had made a bad review about the VX300.
    Chances are, you won't even read this comment and it's ok. Maybe others will and it's gonna help wake some people up.

    A lot of his critiques are correct but like he said if you want one don't let anybody stop you. I have an xr150 and a cbr250r and they are fun bikes. Every bike has it's plus and minuses and I still want one of each of them. I also have a cbr1000rr but the small bikes are still amazing.

    My first bike was an 86 Cb400. I used to run with neighborhood kids on their dirt bikes, through the woods, on that thing. Anything is a dual sport if you are brave/dumb enough

    Been a follower ever since I first got interested in bikes and it absolutely shatters my heart to see my beloved Hunter 350 in this list 😿💔
    However, Yammie, I also understand your viewpoint and every part of me is aligned with it (except the sentimental attachment I have with the Hunter)

    In Argentina, Honda XR 150 (or even better, 250 tornado) is a dream and many consider this bike as the best one in the class (or even the best 150 cc)
    P.S. the new one is around 5k$

    I like the looks of R.E. was very close to getting one. My weight and the engine size turned me away from it.

    Yes I think you are wrong about old school tech. Reliable, easy to work on and great fun for the purpose. I have an Indian Hero Eco 150 trail. I'm 72 and do lots of offroading. Similar engine to XR 150. 14 HP and top end 120. Price about US $1200... Fun at low price with 100 000km or 5 year warranty. More fun than any duel sport I've owned

    Yo
    The Honda XR150 was NEVER sold in India
    Even its derivative, the Hero Impulse 150 sold in modest numbers and was produced for less than half a decade

    Honda only makes engine of xr150 in India. It shares engine with honda unicorn and hornet. It can be cheaply made upto 184 cc using hornet cylinder kit, pistons, piston rings, connecting rod and crank for cheap if one buys parts from india.

    This like comparing a Harley Davidson 1200cc to a Kawasaki ZX10r. Royal Enfields are simply great for what they offer in their price, besides it's not about the high end power but rather the low end grunt out of an OHV engine with taller stroke length which is so much better than lot of motorcycles of the same displacement. They are meant for cruising and not high speed runs. Just compare the stroke length of any 350cc Royal Enfield to that of the triumph speed 400, 85.99mm vs 64mm. Secondly the reason they are heavy is because they use really less plastics compared to any other motorcycle. It's all about taste end of the day.
