  • After our quick look over video of the GR Yaris last year, the team at the Auto Innovation Centre wasted no time in dismantling their own AWD Toyota, giving us a run down of some of the components that are fitted to the very popular hot hatch.
The GR Yaris is Toyota’s first AWD performance car since the Celica GT-Four which ceased production over 20 years ago. A unique engine choice, the Yaris GR is powered by a turbocharged 3-cylinder 1.6L engine producing 200kW and 360Nm, coupled to an electronic variable full time AWD system, enough to propel this little Toyota to 13-second ¼ mile performance out of the box.

I was whinging at the 3cyl that is in the YarisGR, wishing it was a 4 banger. After seeing the size of those intake ports absolutely dwarf a non-vvti JZ motor, I am impressed as hell at the engine. Well done Toyota! 👍

@@fullboost No I haven't boys but I won't say no to an offer to drive one. 😉😉
Tbh Luke/Geordie, whenever I think 3cyl, it brings back bad memories of the Suzuki Alto and the other dirty, slow, NA 1.0L 3 bangers of the 90s, not this 1.6L big block of a 3 banger. The GTTi Charade was the only exception for me as a 3cyl, they were little weapons factory and even more so when done up and the YarisGR is a reminder, 30yrs later, of that GTTi level of greatness as a 3cyl. 👍

Those driveshsft nuts are supposed to be single use. We do have a genuine de-staker sst but a modified tang-through screwdriver works better for me. Trick is to centre the staked part on the shaft groove before de-staking. 360mm front rotors, and all Toyota's use advics calipers.

Yes, it's a stunning piece of work. Probably the best engineering in vehicles right now.
The lightweight engine including valve train, as well as the lightweight gearbox and drive train and just beautiful. And then there's the body, carbon roof and all. It's exquisite, unless most, it's engineered to be worked on and strong.

Can't remember the acronyms but these cars use the audio speakers to cancel out unwanted driveline noises like noise cancelling headphones. And the audio unit also uses the speakers to generate sound waves to 'enhance' the sound of the engine. Either can be turned on or off. Has to be done with the techstream software though.

Thanks for the Video. The bearing nut is the same on all Toyota. Using the ref. 09930-00010 is removed without problem.
But you have to be careful not to deform the nut and keep it completely circular.
Applying heat to the nut also helps

Toyota tech. I use a chape chisel punch that is the same thickness as the gap on the axle shaft and drive it in until the punched area on the nut is back to the same shape as the rest of the nut. I do not reuse the nut.
