I never had any exposure to details regarding the great man himself. Learning here that he helped elevate Einstein towards his eventual stature via this surprising thermodynamic connection is an absolute delight. Thank you! I was a poor teenager and had always been in love with science for as long as I could remember. I was a senior in high school making plans for college and I want to go into physics and astrophysics. I got into college aannnndd eventually dropped out because of lack of funds, but not lack of interest. I made a great life because of my mind's constant thirst for knowledge, but I am angry with life because of WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN. I watch these videos of these great scientists and I'm jealous. I watch your videos how someone was toiling in obscurity but then some small benign event transpired that changed the course of their lives. They went on to do some great discovery or creation on the shoulders of those that proceeded them. I hope humanity keeps pushing forward and not go back to the dark ages that a certain group of anti-science people would desire.

      Man, I’ve had that feeling.
But, when I look back, I look at the contributions I did have: what that mind that envies the great scientist, accomplished in the real world.
I helped companies survive, be more efficient, thrive.
I helped people go from marginal survival to business owners.
So, take it easy on yourself.
There are only a handful of great physicists. Maybe we could have been one, maybe not.
But what we did with that same curious, analytical, struggling mindset, is amazing.
It’s a Zen thing. Doesn’t matter if you were a Nobel Prize winning particle physicists, or a machinist, welder or plumber. You had the same mindset, and you’ve done much good for the world.
Take pride in your work and life: be it a janitor, a doctor, or whatever. Just do it well.

Hi Kathy, I am an old 70 yr.-old full-blood Navajo that enjoyed learning about Physics at a very early age. My interest began in my preteen age years, learning from old books borrowed from my school and local city libraries. Graduating from simple electrical circuits and then vacuum tube electronics to more challenging books on Physics and it's history. I got sidetracked for years trying to solve a problem affecting Indigenous People of the Americas. But I've always tried to keep track of what has been going on in the Physics world, especially concerning the Big Bang Theory and it's cousin, the TOE theory. I have my own ideas about pair-production and where all the anti-particles went or are.
I really enjoy your videos on the historical background of the men involved and how they've come to their understandings. I've read the many books written by and about them.
Even though we've come a long way in our modern day technology, I do believe that the understanding of our Physics World had gone astray, and that is why we still don't have the technological know-how to achieve the Star Trek abilities we all dream of. I think it may be in our own interest that we are still ignorant of such knowledge. By the fact that some of us seem so intent on having so much more than others, even to the point of self-destruction.
Thank you for doing your best to educate others, and I hope you throw in a little bit of positive behavioral encouragement in the process.

This was really nicely done. I remember seeing a picture of the Solvay conference, but had no idea of why these physicists would be in the same place - unless they were at absolute zero, which obviously, they were not. Doing some research for my degree, I came upon a quote from Einstein where he said, something to the effect, that Pauli was the most brilliant person he had ever known and the most socially inept, also. That was 40 years ago, so I may be not correct.

Thank you, this was excellent. We don't get enough of the developmental history of ideas. I remember as a dumb undergrad reading way outside the syllabus and finding some old papers on Einstein's work on Brownian motion. What a delight! So much more rewarding than a few paragraphs in a text without the discussion of the ideas and how they came about. Also remember learning Einstein's theory of specific heats and not realising the significance at all, but I was impressed with how such a 'brain dead' theory got such good results.

I love how you talk about the way science involves actual humans with human character, and discuss how science is not a matter of steady progress, but instead depends on individuals and conflicts between individuals that (in turn) either retard or advance acceptance of ideas. The interpersonal relationships are important, they matter even if we do not want them to. Even Einstein apparently rubbed someone important the wrong way and remained in obscurity for a while.

Happy Belated Birthday ... quick question, is entropy really a measure for disorder? Is not better described as energy dispersal rather than disorder? Or perhaps a decrease in quality of energy? The Boltzmann equation really does not describe disorder, but more how energy packets might be arranged? I am thinking of the late Prof Frank Lambert here.
    Nice video, thanks.

The relationship between Quantum Mechanics and Thermodynamics is closer than many realize. Not only is the Third Law entirely quantum mechanical in nature, but so is the Second Law, to wit: An "observation" in QM corresponds EXACTLY with an irreversible thermodynamic event. This is what causes the apparent "wave function collapse".

Have a wonderful Birthday, you deserve it for bringing people's attention to the really most important element of science PHYSICS, where all begins. I am a Geologist (graduated in 1971) with a strong interest in Applied Geochemistry and a Ph. D. in Geochemistry Applied to Minerals Exploration graduated in 1979), by the love of physics and chemistry since high-school, that grew up considerably in university - where I had a deplorable course on Thermodynamics where the lecturer repeated formulas mechanically, but had no comprehension of its meaning other than sticking names to them, i. e., he could not explain the concepts behind the formulas as he was of a "mechanical mind", like many engineers with a weak knowledge of physics and chemistry are - . Luckily for me though, that academic weakness striking fact in my training forced me in to thinking hard about thermodynamics concepts every time I went in the field; be it to carry out observations on mineral deposits to plan empiric geochemical work that could explain the fate of some elements concentration or depletion from the magmas up to the minerals deposits; or imagining ways to use chemical elements properties to understand the formation of anomalous concentrations of valuable elements among a sea of rocks facing the observer through traveling in physical and chemical potential fields; which concepts are essential to understand how elements can concentrate from its continental "background average" of 45 grams./metric Ton. by a factor of 222.22 times to reach 10,000 grams 1% Cu (a rock contained metal value of USD $99/Ton.) in the case of Cu or from its continental "background average" of 0.005 grams/Ton in the case of Au by a factor of 200 times to reach 1 gram/Ton. Au (a rock contained metal value of USD $257.23) to decide whether or not to collect say 450 samples at a cost of USD $7,000 worth of travel and analysis cost in the search for a possible geochemical anomalous series of metal contents in them.
Therefore, in order to be sucessfull, an exploration geologist must know its physics and chemistry very well, so as to be able to understand whether the colour or density or geochemical samples contents will justify recommending the expenditure of USD n x $7,000. By the way I did collaborate in the discovery or discovered myself several important metalliferous deposits of Cu (Mo) and Au in the last 50 years of my work.
So thanks very much again Kathy for your very valuable, interesting and amusing videos on the discovery and development of physical concepts by different scientists and by linking physics and history together with lots of grace. All the best to you,
    Jaime ARIAS, Santiago, Chile

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
It's amazing. Your quick presentation of the explosive birth days of Theoretical Physics is so helpful!
The subject matter which you present is dauntingly difficult to make clear to students, and, want-to-be students---- of, all, ages!
It's such a walk into quicksand to make a go at making clear in a short time what all these MEGA-ACTIVE MINDS were intuing, seeing, discovering at that spookily magic double millenium turn-of-the-century.
However, you have a "natural instinct" to know how much to say, what does need to be said, the order of presentation for each Researcher, how much time to devote to each, and to condense, well, the nature of the interaction, and clash, among them. Your video is so interesting, instructive and "watchable" that I'm going to watch it several times tonight and subsequently, because I know I will truly learn more and more of the true, deeper nature of this genuinely difficult field of study, while saying: "Gee, I have never seen it this way before!"
I do hope that, you, in perticular, and all involved in this production, wil be , justly, appreciated and, compensated---- monetarily---- for your short, but, ah, so effective pedagogic presentation!!!!
