    Removing the metal bracket and disconnecting the battery is recommended, yet optional. Just make sure the system is shut down. You’ll be fine.

    Some of the laptops from Amazon say they are F512JA but they are in fact NOT and are instead X515EA models. It doesn't say this on the outside of the laptop either it says only R565E so beware when you're ordering the HDD cable as the F512JA one WILL NOT WORK in the X515EA. Found this out the hard way. Go into Windows and type dxdiag in the start menu and then find your model number on that screen when it comes up, it will have a huge long number but that is the REAL model number. Be sure the listing you're buying has your model listed. It will be a shorter version of the dxdiag number, but it should match part of it. Helpful tip to keep you and your laptop safe.

    You need to buy a complete ssd install kit it comes with a self adhesive static sheild the drive adapter and a rubber/steel drive caddy/suspension that fits the slot inside the computer perfectly and acts as a shock adsorber for the drive

    Thank you for this video. Have an X512JA but the internal arrangement seems basically the same. Was wondering though what thickness of the foam tape was used, I have a drive that I would like to install. I've been generally happy with the computer itself but the lack of a standard caddy mount is disappointing, from what I've come to expect from Asus this is a quality failure equivalent to Lamborghini selling a car with a 12 Litre ( 3 Gallon ) fuel tank. One small concern though is the foam that was removed from the drive bay, the outer surface is metalized but the foam is too thick to let a hard drive or SSD fit, is this part of the grounding or does it serve some other purpose? Should I shave down the underside of the foam so the SSD I want to install will fit or just discard it?

    • @whattmeter
      @whattmeter  3 года назад

      you don't necessarily have to use foam. I was just improvising since I couldn't find a caddy. If you find one please let me know. They also have SSD spacers (I didn't have it at the time, but I do now) which look like they would work great for this. If I encounter another situation like this I will use the spacer instead.

    • @whattmeter
      @whattmeter  3 года назад

      you could try shaving down the foam if you can.

    • @davidkillawee6
      @davidkillawee6 3 года назад +1

      @@whattmeter Shaving it down was actually what I went with, wasn't comfortable with discarding it just in case it was part of the grounding or served some similar purpose. Still disappointed with the design though, found one type of caddy on Amazon that allows you to install two M.2 drives side by side, nice storage option if you have the money to get two 8 TB units but there is no proper way to secure it to the laptop, and using foam in this case would restrict cooling. But thank you for the reply.

      @@whattmeter I'm adding the SSD. I have the SSD PCIe M.2 installed from the factory and I'm trying to add a sata ssd connected by the HDD port with the flat/sata cable but it doesn't give a sign of life even changing BIOS etc. already tested the ssd etc and it doesn't work. I bought the 10-pin flatcabe same pinout as the board and nothing went right.

      @@chadano4205 if you are going to game on it then it should be fine but I would recommend that you also perform a ram upgrade as the Asus vivobook 15 X512D only comes with 8gb of ram and almost half of that is used for the graphics however if you upgrade it to 20gb of ram it will leave you with around about 17gb ram available with the rest being used by the graphics (which is shared not Dedicated) I would also recommend that you go for something like a Samsung EVO drive as these are generally regarded as the best drive on the market I hope this reply has been somewhat of use to you
