Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

My thumbnail looks like I’m in the crockpot. 😂
Lol
😂
Do you sell /wholesale your melt and pour base?
Hey! I do not.
This chick is cool AF! We need more people like this in the soap community
This is the best video I've seen that explains and shows the differences in how to make hot process vs cold process soap. Thanks!
Can I just tell you, you would fit in amazingly with my little group of friends! You talk like we do with a no holds barred reality and I love the sarcasm and realism more than you could possibly know! Thank you for being real in every video you make of you making all of the things!!!
Lol, I would love to be friends with her too. I wonder if she's taking applications. :)
I'm here for all your videos of course 😍. However, the ones where you speak truth and debunk the reality of the soap universe are the ones I relate to the most. You cant, never do, it must, --- all I hear is --- prove it. Love soap in all its forms but I do struggle with the fluid hot pour, not gonna lie. My patience gets the better of me and I wind up like "ok rustic it is". I do use the triage of methods (hp, cp, m&p) in a couple of my layered soap designs (just for fun). Would make for good content for you guys. Eventually I'll post to utube but not today. Just editing the insta vids is too much time. Much respect!!!!!!!!!!!
i love your soaps and videos but more than that i love your energy. ty for sharing and doing what you do.
Again. Love the no nonsense straight forward truth. You make it easy to understand. Awesome
I love making both hot process and cold process soap! I tend to use the hot process method for my Unscented soaps. Great video!
Your videos are really great and helpful ❤️
Thank you so much for doing this video. I am yet to attempt hot process so will enjoy watching your video. 😊
I am so interested now in hit processed wow it look so easy I love the rustic look
I like that the hot process seems to be more like cooking, which is neat.
12:16 beautiful. Hot process is my thing. I sooooo love it. Another benefit to play with is superfats. You make the recipe completely saponified and then you add 5-10% back after cooking. Then you have expensive oils, that are not at all saponified.
I cant wait to try this.
What amount of superfat did you use??
Thx! Not scary like I thought. 😁
HP soaper here :) ...that’s my preferred method but I do it a bit differently.
Everyone soaps different, and 99% of it isn’t wrong!
Since I stared with HP, it's still easier for me but I like CP as well. They're both fun and have their place. It's nice to use HP for the traditional soaps like pine tar, Castile and lard and tallow.
Which process allows for a faster cure time? I saw someone say their cold process takes 4-6 weeks to cure.
Cure time is a big fight in the soap world. Chemically, there’s no set timeframe to cure. Basically when the bars stop losing weight, they’re cured. Faster cure time is possible with water reductions, Clay additions, CPOP, etc. :)
You should check out the ultimate guide to hp soap! They go super deep into the chemistry of soap making and, in my opinion, are a good, trustworthy resource.
Great resource, for sure!
This is he prettiest HP soap I've ever seen!!! I would try this type of soap, BUT I only have 1 crock, and it's a kitchen staple. LOVE this recipe though!!! Such luxurious lather too!!!
I get it! I got an instapot and finally retired my crocks for soap. 😂
Check out your local thrift store, they often have cheap used crock pots that still work fine 😁
I use a stainless steel pot - I do 20 lb batches all at once. ;) I retired my crocks because they are too small.
Hi great video!! May i add pure patchouli essen oil to this recipe?
Super cool. I made your paste and that stuff cooked up in a hot minute. My crock pot must be on steroids for heat because it literally only took about 40 minutes to make. The crock pot is ancient (which is probably why it hot so hot. Which i know now.) I thought I had done something wrong but it tested great and works awesome so thank you for that one.
I love the soap paste!
@@MrsSoapAndClay just got some fullers earth clay so I'm gonna give the men's face wash a whirl and see how that turns out.
Hi, Idk how can I have a finish soap but a little more liquid so it can be poured into the mold instead of taking it with the spatula?
Hi! I wonder if you can teach us how to do cream shampoo! 😊😊😊
I haven't tried HP yet. Partly because I don't have space to store a crock pot for it and I'm not comfortable using the food-making crock for it (nor would my roommate be comfortable with it). Regardless, this was fun to watch. =)
Yeah I’m generally a fan of not using items for food and soap. I dunno why, but it’s a thing. 😂
Can the HP batter also be cooked in a stainless steel pot? Before I moved abroad I unfortunately donated my crockpot and in the new country they are expensive. Love the artisan look of that soap.
Yup, stainless steel is good!
In this recipe did you superfat at a higher percentage? Also love the video
Mrs soap n clay, can I skip the coconut milk and oat and just add the extra 2oz of water with the lye? I wanted to make it today but I have no coconut milk n oat
Yes you can!
Hi, I have a question. By making soap with hot process, does it produce glycerin with how you have made it or do I have to add vegetable glycerin, alcohol (Vodka) and sugar and water to create a glycerin soap? 😊
So all honest to god soaps naturally contain glycerin, but that doesn’t make them glycerin soaps. You would need to add glycerin to a hot process soap to make it remeltable. I did a video with a 3 butter recipe for a glycerin soap base from scratch in year 1, and have another on the schedule in the next few weeks. :)
@@MrsSoapAndClay Oh ok. What I am hoping to make is a transparent soap that has the benefits of glycerin. I have been conducting research on glycerin in soap and how it benefits dry and sensitive skin. I have been experimenting with cold process and melt and pour and am next going to try hot process. I am enjoying making soap so far and watching your videos. 😊👍
Okay Mrs Science and Clay, I need your expertise- a couple of the batches I’ve made with a discoloring fragrance, I’ve left a portion of the batter unscented to preserve the color. But, when I cut the bars, the unscented soap is like... plasticky? It’s hard and flaky. The only thing the unscented batter didn’t get was the extra little bit of spatula mixing to incorporate the fragrance oil, but they were both poured off after emulsion so why aren’t they the same texture 🤔 and it doesn’t happen every time, either. I’m perplexed 🧐
So I’ve found that unscented and uncolored soap batter actually needs a bit more stirring love to really ensure that emulsion is stable. I’d try stirring those portions longer next time to see if it’s better. Then I would look to the fragrance to see if the scented portion is doing weird things to the unscented portion during saponification.
@@MrsSoapAndClay thanks ma’am! I think with the newest batch I made, it’s the fragrance doing something because I stick blended the unscented portion quite a bit extra to make sure it wasn’t too runny and it still came out flaky and weird. Soap does some weird and cool things lol 😎
Just wondering if you upped the SF due to the amount of coconut oil?
That is the general “rule” with coconut oil!
@@MrsSoapAndClay And did you? Your recipe makes no mention of the SF, nor do you mention if you SF in the video.
This is the two ingredient recipe with a 60/40 split of oils, right? If there’s 5.3oz of lye in 34 Oz of oils, then that’s a 5% superfat. But remember - one of the reasons I give you the percentages is so you can adjust your superfat as you desire! Just plug it into soapcalc to get your new lye requirements. 😁
@@MrsSoapAndClay - you're right. I plugged the recipe into soapcalc and see that it is 5% SF.
Have you ever done cold process liquid soap?
Sure! I do a foaming hand soap using cold process as well - it’s fun.
@@MrsSoapAndClay is there a year 1 video for liquid CP soap? Or can that be a year 2 video? Asking for a friend... who is me. >_>
Ha! I don’t think there’s a year one version…I can put it on the list!
@@MrsSoapAndClay I’d love to see how you do it. There’s few videos for CPLS that I could find when I first got interested in trying it, which made me extra nervous to try it. The potassium hydroxide is a little spicier to use, which I imagine is what stops a lot of people from trying it. It’s what made me the most nervous at first, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
Me + soap + crockpot = HOT MESS! LOL! First time I used hot process it was actually a rebatch of dish/cleaning soap....because I cannot cut a block shape and it was too hard for my cutter so I used a knife and that was a huge mistake. So I rebatched it and now I have good but super ugly blocks of soap. Oh well, it'll just be for me. I have since successfully made good blocks of dish soaps.
So...today...I tried for a liquid soap, which I guess is like a hot process soap but with more steps. HA! I just wanted a good liquid soap for general cleaning so I can quit buying the expensive, albeit preferred product for my cleaning biz. Well....I really need to learn to put my mixer away after emulsion is reached. I was like applesauce, do I stop now? NO, let's go to mashed potato, but ya know over cooked potato! UGH! I got a super hard mess of soap! O.K., so it'll all be good. Been cooking it down and adding in water all afternoon and it's almost there.
Truly, I think I'm better off with cold process in general. But certain things I need to experience so I'll know them! And I'll always hear Mrs Soap n Clay say "Just mix to emulsion." And one day I'll actually listen!
You know, the actual act of stick blending soap is so satisfying that it’s hard for ME to stop at emulsion. I’m not done with my catharsis yet! 😂
@@MrsSoapAndClay , It is weirdly satisfying watching soap batter swirl around the mixer as it changes form! I totally get that!
Mrs. Soap, would you help a girl out? I am trying to break into a niche market, I do HTHP soaps with incredible designs. I Need someone to follow and teach me the ropes of my unique market. I believe you can help. Do you have 10 minutes to talk with me this week or early next week?
Why do you think that crystallization is silly?
It’s not a chemically viable idea in the soap world. It’s fun to say, but doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of soapmaking.
Can't u type a recipe in your desc box??? It looks so childish 😛 that u showing a written recipe on a paper
Daily content means daily editing, and that’s already more time away from the soap shop, the kids, and my life than I should be taking. So yeah I can do any number of things, but this is what I’m willing to do. Cool? 👍
OR you could just be thankful for what you got! This is something I like to remind my 6 year old children of. Lol
@@TheSoapChef amen sister!
