I’m not European but i’m glad the Xenoblade series has European english voices instead of the generic American voices. It’s very refreshing from popular RPG’s.
I like how XC2 breaks conventions. Like the Ardenian Empire is the classic evil german empire archetype visually. Yet the empire is portrayed as complex and not at all your standard evil goons you would expect.
As far as I have heared: The Dev team wanted to try use various japanese regional accents and differences to make the world of xenoblade 2 feel larger. In order to get the same thing across in the dub they worked closely together with the UK based localization studio to bring the same concept across. So they decided on: Gormotti = Welsh Ardenian = Scottish Leftherian = Northern English Tornan/Tantalese = Southern English Urayan = Australian Blades = American The names of characters and places were changed from the japanese to fit those regional themes. What I love from what you said is thatNia is a propper welsh name as Nia is not a localised name but the original Japanese one. Usually it is explained that it comes from the wordplay on the japanese cat sound nya. But if it is also a Welsh name that might suggest that the English dub had a direct influence on the Japanese version. Or it is just a massive perfect coincidence. Mio from Xenoblade 3 is probaply a wordplay on Miau aka. the norther european cat sound.
It’s interesting because I had a similar reaction when I played xeno 2. I’m an Australian with a strong European heritage including welsh which is evident in my surname Lloyd. The funny thing is I didn’t really think too much of it before playing the game and falling in love with nia as a character. It actually inspired me to start looking into the welsh side of my heritage. I found it incredibly amusing when I learned that both me and my family have been pronouncing our surname wrong this whole time 😂
As an Australian, I noticed that the Garfont Mercenaries had a very board, ocker sort of accent. Think Steve Irwin, meanwhile at in the capital (or at least, the queen of Uraya) had a more posh accent. The type that you'd hear from most reporters. With Australian accents, we kinda have three? There's kinda a spectrum from ocker to posh, and then there's the aboriginal Australian accent. (Which wasn't really represented in XC2)
Hi! American here, and you're absolutely right. It's astounding that no one had all that much to say about the dialect choices in this series. I really wanted to get people's takes on the logic and feeling behind each of the cultures in XC2, and now how combining those groups in new ways plays out in XC3. And there's nothing! It's crazy. RUclips is full to the brim of people doing all kinds of these deep analyses about basically everything else. Not much I can say about the Blades, since they are a widespread diaspora, except to laugh sardonically at drawing the "cultureless weapon people" card. I did notice that Mio's accent is quite a bit softer than Nia's, or I think it sounds that way. I guess hanging around Blades all the time has that effect on people?
I also noticed Mio's softer accent, and after watching this video I'm now wondering if it's that she has a "towny" accent that was described in this video.
Ignorant American here: I was one of those dumb-dumbs who thought that Nia was Irish until I looked up her voice actress. I can hear the difference now, but back then I didn’t have any context for what Welsh people sounded like. Irish was the next closest thing I could associate it with. In my defense, I did at least think her accent sounded off for being Irish, but I just figured maybe it was some regional accent variant or maybe she was an English person doing a really bad fake Irish accent.

I loved the cast of VA. Most haters were elitists of xc1 who dont want a sequel to top what they already liked. Typical mindset of "the first part is always better"
