I think what's working in Persona 3's favor is that its themes directly correlate with the idea of spoilers. Knowing your fate, and instead of running from it, enjoying the time you have now and making the most of it.

Yeah. Since there also people who played the original. So most people would optimized their gameplay (a.k.a. optimized the protag life)
I wish the network feature would show the deeper percentage of what people do exactly.

I was spoiled on a bunch of things way back in the day regarding the original Persona 3. And yeah, it sucks. But what's kind of cool is that the game's "biggest spoiler"... isn't one. It's heavily implied, if not outright declared, from the very beginning. What I can say, though, is that sometimes the journey is more precious than the destination, and that is kind of one of the messages of the game to begin with. You've got one year. 365 days. What are you going to do with them? Are you going to spend your time dreading the end? Are you going to spend your time making friends, growing bonds, starting relationships? Or are you going to just go to the burger place and stuff your face every chance you get? There isn't a right or wrong answer, only the understanding that you take responsibility for your choices and accept their consequences. However you choose to do it, it should be whatever brings you the most happiness along the way.

    (Spoilers for P3/P3 Reload below!)
I miraculously avoided any spoilers at all for P3 back when I played it for the first time in 2022. The ending was beautiful, but I frankly didn't fully understand it till after I went on, and started reading discussions and the years of people trying to understand it, just like me. I assumed the MC had died, but it wasn't entirely clear if it was up for interpretation, and I kinda wondered if I just interpreted things wrong at first.
So, going into Reload, knowing the ending, made the entire game that much more impactful. _Everyone_ in the game talks about _your_ future, text that I didn't even think about my first time around, when Maiko says she can't wait to see you again, you just think about it as kid's innocent little remark -- But when you know the ending, _you know that she'll never see your character again, never getting to know what happened to him,_ things are a little different.
You have to sit there, playing the game, with this knowledge in the back of your mind. _Momento Mori, remember, you will die._ There's a reason why this term was used so much in the marketing of Reload.
In the end, that is what this game is about. Making the best of your time, while you're still around. It's about the inevitability of death, and how no matter how much you fight it, you can only delay it. It comes unexpectedly and violently, like with Shinji. It comes in the form of a sacrifice, like with Mitsuru's Father. But sometimes, it's a peaceful rest, you close your eyes, never to open them again.
Life is worth living, even knowing you will die. People are worth connecting with, even knowing there will be a time where you are severed from one another. Knowing the ending, might ruin the surprise, but I don't think it hurts the story. In many ways, knowing the ending makes the story better.
_But I do think it's a shame, that so many have spoiled such a beautiful game._

It is ill advised to rely on surprises for storytelling. At the very least, not on it's own. The key is to invoke suspense. Even if some of the audience can see certain things well in advance, they'll still be moved by them regardless.

  • @HatVessel

Knowing about the ending basically made the game be way more impactful for me. The theme of the game was always knocking on the back of my head, every time any character mentioned about what they wanted to do in the future I'd remember the phrase *"MEMENTO MORI, MEMENTO VIVERE."*
I can't even describe the feeling I felt when the final scene hit, I literally just broke down till the credits stopped rolling. (And then I broke down again when the new title screen showed up)
I used to say I didn't have a favorite game, but now I can gladly say I have one.

Shinji's death was the only thing i knew abt the game going in, yet it still hit me so hard i had to put the game down for days and he's my favorite character of all time. I knew his fate going in and it intrigued me to him, making me grow way too attached and being devastated when he died...
After letting certain spoilers get to me with P5, i realized spoilers only have as much power as you give them, and they can even enhance ur experience instead! I was spoiled to hell and back for Royal, but just knowing vague bits doesn't compare to EXPERIENCING it. The third semester was one of my favorite moments in gaming
I dont think Shinji's death and especially the Main Character's would have hit as hard if i wasn't spoiled... (after seeing how confused people were abt p3's ending, im glad i was spoiled lol)
This game is worth playing even if you know about the ending. And life is worth living even if you know you're going to die...

  • @existentialbread4746
    @existentialbread4746 6 месяцев назад +7

Thing about p3's ending is that I see so many people miss out on the impact of the last scene, because they don't realize what's happening. To me, that is the real spoiler. The experience is better if you know it going in. I can't say the same for the rest of the game, but that's the one scene where I feel like the opposite is true.

I wouldn't say it's better if you know it going in. I wasn't spoiled on it but I picked up on the way Aigis was phrasing certain things, and the context of Makoto getting unusually tired.
      The moment I saw
"......" or "Close Eyes" it all came together and the tears started trickling, with a shred of denial
It hit, incredibly hard for me. but I'm also the type to really care about the MC... one of my favorite moments was how genuinely excited and happy he was getting high quality headphones from fuuka.
so that smile right at the end... it turned denial into acceptance, and my eyes into faucets.

  • @Jack_Frost526
    @Jack_Frost526 6 месяцев назад +5

Kinda played into the game's themes pretty well to know your character will always die actually lol. The original was a lot more heavy on the "memento mori" thing than reload, but still

  • @FearlessGamer27

Surprisingly, I never got spoiled for the MCs death, however when looking up whether or not to hang out with Ryoji one day, I got spoiled on a choice to “Kill or Spare” him. So the entire time, I was just waiting for the moment to show his true colors, to fight us as like the big bad, but then had my expectations do a 180 when he gave me the choice without a fight.

Exactly. I don’t like people who think that being spoiled on something ruins the experience for them. Them THINKING that being spoiled ruins their experience is what ruins their experience. You shouldn’t spoil regardless, but it’s honestly kind of annoying to see people who can’t look past a spoiler.

100% this. I used to let spoilers bother me. but once I realized they only have as much power as I give them, and that reading abt something is totally different from experiencing it...spoilers bothered me less (and actually enhanced my enjoyment of certain things)
Spoilers suck, but how they impact you is definitely up to you.

If you're being spoiled this much on games you like you might need to be more proactive about the content you consume and the people you follow. If you're googling things or watching youtube videos about a gamer you've gotta assume you're risking spoilers. If you're active on a games subreddit it'll be more likely to get spoiled

I’m a longtime persona fan and I’ve played p3p like four times over and over again, as well as the OG p3 (didn’t finish bc I was underleveled on Jan 31st) when I was in middle school. You would think someone who’s played the game and seen the story multiple times wouldnt even wanna play reload. I just finished my first playthrough of it on march 5th and I can still say this is one of my favorite stories out of the modern persona games. Even though I didn’t really plan on it at first, I managed to nearly 100% the game on my first playthrough, the first I’ve ever done for a persona game. I made it my mission to have that fulfilling first run of playing a game I know all too well, because having grown and become an adult made me change the way I think about the game. It made all the heavy story beats hit that much harder. And once I had the accomplishment of maxing all social links, finishing linked episodes, getting the ultimate OP personas, the final boss and endgame became such a cathartic and satisfying first playthrough for me. It just made sense and was so perfect for the game’s thesis.
Knowing spoilers is something that’s very touchy for a lot of people but I’m a person who LIKES to be spoiled. There’s something about preparing yourself and seeing all the foreshadowing and little details leading up to a spoiler moment that enhances a watching or playing experience. P3R is a perfect example of that.

  • @TheRealTetro
    @TheRealTetro 6 месяцев назад +5

I was not exactly spoiled while playing Reload in the sense that I had simply played the original, but I will say knowing the story beats, knowing the themes, being able to appreciate foreshadowing to its fullest, dreading things before they'd come, ... All those things made me want to appreciate every last detail as much as I could.
I did not cry as I finished the original, things were happening on the screen and they simply washed over me, it took time before I could really appreciate what it all meant to me.
I never cried in front of a piece of media as much as I did going through the last couple of days of Reload.

Imagine if we thought the same way for movies. Nobody would rewatch Ghibli, or Disney, or Pixar, or LotR, or Star Wars, etc. Going into a game blind is cool when one can afford to jump into something interesting immediately, but otherwise? I know I want to play Disco Elysium and Outer Wilds and Pathologic-and Persona 3!-precisely because other people have spoiled me on how good they are and why. It would've been better to experience them blind... but I wouldn't have. I find out about cool games only from video essays, not reviews.

For a while, I've just stopped caring about spoilers. I also care about the story, but for me the experience is less about the surprise and more about the way it's done. For example, if you told me a character dies, my first reaction isn't "I don't care about this character anymore" it's "I wonder how and why?"
I understand my thoughts on spoilers are unpopular, so I try to avoid spoiling for other people.

If you wait 20 years to play a game expect to be spoiled. Idk what to say, it’s like those annoying people that complain that you spoiled some random show that came out in the mid 2000s. There is a reasonable expectation that after a certain amount of time everyone that is interested in a game or movie would have consumed them all ready.

When i first played the game, i wasn't spoiled at all, the only persona things i knew at the time were some things bout 4 anime and some things bout 5 original.(+ arena, was playing it at the same time) I didnt know of whats gonna happen, but i decided to play 3 when i finally caved in.(wanted to play chronologically but gave up on 1 and 2 installations(had a psp). I understood the messages in openings, such as "Memento mori", "Remember, you will die", all it did was simply make me more curious. Whenever those twists happened, it was life changing. Chidori's predicament made me tear up, the fight against "Moon" made me hyped..and the march... the ending.. i remember being shocked, ugly crying and parents being worried about me crying(tho just ignoring it when i said that game was the reason), there have never been a game that induced such emotions in me... i've already been at the shitty part of my life, but this, this made me rethink stuff. I started truly living, no more a husk that gave up. Made me realize that shit happens, but we gotta live, enjoy every single moment, find new experiences, connections... and that it will end someday. We die, then its just nothing. When i started replaying Reload, i remembered all those emotions, each social link i went through, each fun interraction with teammates, each lyric in the new/revamped songs.. This game is beautiful, man.

When it came to Persona, I actually started with 5 on the PlayStation Hits catalog. I played it up until Madarame’s Palace. I just dropped it because other stuff interested me.
At the time, I didn’t like P5 because of the Turn-Based combat. I didn’t like games where you had to fight with a list of moves. I wanted to have more control in the combat. But after playing P4, I started to warm up to playing games with that style of gameplay.
I watched the P4 anime with my friend so going into P4 and playing it, I knew what was gonna happen. Although, it didn’t ruin my experience with it.
Same for P5R (still have yet to actually beat it) I knew what was gonna happen but I still enjoyed it.
Now I’m doing the same for P3R. Being spoiled on Persona games is Damn near impossible these days. You just have to be careful.
What matters is that you enjoy the story. Yeah, it’s better to go into most games blind, but as long as you don’t let Spoilers ruin your perception of a game, then you’ll be fine.

On the complete opposite end, I bought P3FES on PS3 in 2021 after beating P5, I was looking for P4G but couldn't find it, tried FES. I went in with literally no information, no expectations. Persona 3 FES turned into my favourite game of all time. I don't know how to feel about it now that Reload is out, so at this point I just default to saying P3 is my favourite game of all time minus Portable. It's a very special game close to my heart and the lack of expectations made it a wonderful surprise.

The Persona and Pokémon titles are the games that I replay the most. And Wwe2k games too, mainly for the Universe mode. But still FFX, FFXVII, aswell P3 to 5, still hit hard, despite of already knowing the story. For me, more than going from point Alpha and Omega of the story, is the Journey in-between Alpha and Omega, that I enjoy relieving it. And one thing is watching someone's playtrough, the other is playing yourself. My first Persona, was P4G in 2013, after watching the infamous P5 chair teaser, I was curious about the Persona franchise. But until then, I mostly played FFs and Pokémon. So I needed an entry point, I watched some playtrough of P4G on yt, watched the P4 and P4G anime. I like it so much, that I finally decided to experience myself, I bought a Vita and P4G digitally in 2013. Later on, tried to play P3Fes on my Ps3, but it got the ylod, I end up, playing P3P on the Vita. Around the base P5 release time, I acquired a Ps4 and vanilla P5. So in my experience, already being spoiled about P3, P4, FFX and FFXVII story, didn't spoiled the fun or the Journey, only spoiled the the ending. Despite P3, P4 and P5 is hard not being spoiled already, it's 💩 for newcomers, that arent familiar with the franchise. But still, I still advice them, to experience themselves. But with the all internet, social media and meme culture, you aren't spoiled with anything, only if you live under a rock or alone in the woods without a Wi-Fi connection. 😅

In a similar vein, playing the original, I had gotten to around October when FES came out, so I imported my save having to start the story over like new game + and figured I'd use a guide to max the social links, which failed as early guides had plenty of errors. I beat the game and didn't really feel like I had the impact I should have.
Over the years, I'd go back to it, usually when house sitting and try finish the game again, now using accurate guides and going for that perfect run, only to burn out or get bored.
Now playing Reload, I understand that it was using the guides, having my time slots all planned out well in advance, was all taking me out of the experience. I went into the Fortune boss being able to live in that moment rather than seeing who I would be taking to the next days and preparing myself for the next Tartarus marathon.
Taking the days as they came, focusing on the social links I was most interested in going through led me to greatly appreciate and immerse myself in the game so much more.
I generally to avoid spoilers and try to tell as little as possible to friends when recommending games, but I've found Reload to be a hard sell to people with busy lives with very limited leisure time. I've had to go into some details that gave some twists and reveals away, like why the protag starts out as a mostly skill-less blank slate and how the idea of making the most of every day is integral to the theme and story. I worry that telling so much will ruin their experience with the game.

But I did find out about a certain change and want to grab the artwork for a friend.
here is the begginning of your P3P spoiler for the FEMC (which is "that spoiler" in the original)
On the wiki because the FEMC is a lady it mentions "age", now imagine me about to hit the turning up point of the game prior to november 30th seeing "age at death".
If you go there to this day it remains intact and no the male protagonist in that time did not have that distinction, he now does so as of checking.
and then my file broke and I couldn't finish it :)

I was playing after being spoiled on what happens to the MC and I was exactly the same way, I felt like rushing through because the last month or two of the game just totally drags on. There's no feeling of excitement as you get to the ending because you already know what's waiting for you, and the last month is easily the least eventful of the entire game as it's clearly there to give you extra time to grind levels/tartarus and max out social links before the end.

It is pretty funny, because that study was terrible. They were using short stories in a testing setting, it wasn't an 100 hour JRPG where you spend so much time invested in the world and characters...
For shows, movies, and games whether they're 3 hours or 100, the weight of your immersion, expectations and connection to it is going to be much higher than some random short story a guy in a labcoat is telling you about.
Of course they'd enjoy it more, because they didn't care about it in the first place.

What I normally do, what I did mostly with P3Reload, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and SMTV and now SMTV Vengeance is mainly watch the official trailers and teaser about the games and at least one week prior to it's release avoid any social media or yt about the game. Since I don't use other social media, besides yt, it's easier for me, to do so. But since younger gens have a much tough time doing that, you can't complain about being spoiled, even you are or aren't looking for info for set games or media. And FFX, P3, P4 and even P5 are old games by now, so good luck in not being spoiled yet. Is like complaining about spoilers about Starwars first trilogy or Titanic's ending or any old content. You've to take those in account. 😅
