    Playbox in my opinion is one of the most versatile and powerful/important plugins that has been released in the last couple of years. You're talking about a powerful chord tool, sampler, instrument and FX panel basically in one plugin. What I really like though, is that it's like NI has completely unlocked the thing so you can use it to do what it does, or use it to feed into other things (exporting/importing midi, use your own samples etc.) and just hitting the dice button a few times can completely change your inspiration and ideas. I love this plugin.

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  2 года назад +1

      Yeahhhhhh! That's exactly right. Playbox is such a solid plugin. Like you said, it's a chord tool, sampler, instrument, and FX panel all rolled into one!
      And I'm happy that you see the power behind the randomization feature. It really does help you find new ideas quick.

    I haven't slept in two days... I haven't been this inspired by a VST in since I bought MASCHINE 10 Years Ago. Wait till you realize how easy it is to create your own chords, or drag in your own samples and midi info. It is absolutely outstanding. It is so well curated. I'd love to meet the team behind the design. Some of these samples maybe nothing but more than samples from their enormous library. It goes to show you the possibilities that many of us weren't even aware could be achieved with only stacking these types of textures and sound design. What will set this plugin from everything else in this genre of VST's would be.... EXPANSIONS! Enjoy... I'm going to play with my Playbox.

    Use #6: Instead of creating layered chords, you can also create layered kicks and snares for a custom drum kit. Playbox already has many drum and 808 samples for this purpose, but I brought my own dubstep growl samples to layer create some interesting and powerful drums.

    Playbox is in every Kontakt 14 bundle from Standard on.
    Note that Kontakt X (Standard) --> Komplete 14 Standard is normally € 199, which is the normal price of Playbox.
    In other words, if you've got Komplete, why not upgrade to 14 instead?

  • @afmfintech

    The thing about this that I have never seen anywhere else is the ability to use different samples simultaneously for different notes of a chord. I've seen lots of examples of layering samples, but not broken out into the notes of a chord like this. Normally when you play a chord, each note plays the same layered sound. I'll have to see what other people do with it, but it's hard to evaluate because it honestly never even occurred to me to do that.

      traditionally (like in classical composing) you would write voicings via separate tracks for each "voice" (say, violin, flute, bassoon,...) forming a chord.

    It would be even better if they added some usability features, such as:
    -The ability to copy paste individual samples within playbox. That will save a lot of menu diving.
    - the ability to lock samples when copying a column to keep those from changing
    - in the chord editor the possibility to play/change one single note from the keyboard.
    - in the fx pannel a better way to see what controls what

    I have Ana2, ROLI studio, and Scaler2. All of these have one button chords as well.
    Dragging chords in is cool. HouseEngine, Orb Producer, have that too though.
    What’s unique about playbox is the randomized sound layering. You could technically do that manually without this plugin, but that would get tedious.
    I’m gonna get the free komplete now trial so I can demo this.. I wish it was a little cheaper.. Updating Komplete 13 to 14 will probably be 300 dollars.. and this instrument might be included so paying for it now and updating later would suck.. if not included, it’ll be a 100 dollars instead of 150 on Black Friday… do I really want it now now? I hate the price tbh 😂

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  2 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for all the feedback! I think you're right about playbox. The randomized sound layering is unique and done well. I feel like NI created a great workflow to make randomized parameters as controlled as possible. So it becomes like a collab between you and the product.
      And I know what you mean about the pricing. I love that Native Instruments releases products all the time, but to afford it all, it really does require you to buy the latest version of Komplete for that bundle deal. Black Friday is a great time to buy, however, I think NI does a big sale around summer that's pretty close to the Black Friday deals.
      I checked out your channel too, and I love the content you make. Super cool stuff!

    • @mojoiam

      @@ThisIsOnesto just had a realization Onesto:
      Waves Cr8 sampler lets you play different one shots as a chord (you just gotta load them up yourself though, you don’t get to randomize).
      It’s not as cool as playbox.. but I already own it so I’m skipping playbox until it goes 50 percent off.
      and it means a lot that you enjoyed my channel bro! I’m new to beat making but I’ve been producing my songs in the DJ Khaled sense (I’ve worked with a ton of producers over the years). So now that I’m learning production it’s all making sense.. lots of aha moments!

      I had a similar feeling when I first checked out Playbox. It's kind of unusual, so it was hard to see the potential. After really spending some time with it, I started to see the benefits of this plugin, and I eventually became a big fan if you couldn't already tell in my video.
      Right now it's priced at $149 US which is steep, but you can fortunately pay $9.99 US/month to get access to Playbox plus a ton of other NI plugins. It's sort of like doing trial at a low price.
      Anyways, hopefully this helps, and I hope you can find those products and artists that help spark that inspiration that so many of us are looking for.

    • @ThisIsOnesto

      What you described is spot on. Playbox is a chord playback with different samples on each voice. And yeah, you can probably build something similar in Bitwig or Ableton. Although I haven't attempted it, I'm not sure if I can create a device that works as efficiently and easily as Playbox.

      Playbox is best for chord progressions and chord sound design. I think why Playbox exists is to help musicians generate and design these chords really quick and effectively. However it's hard to believe until you try it.

    Awesome video! Is this VST for for hip-hop and trap music as well do you think? It's half price now so in considering it. Also, after exporting MIDI from Playbox, can it be edited, like can you change instruments at that point still if no? Thanks!

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching, here's some of my thoughts.
      Playbox can definitely work with hip-hop and trap, but I think there will be a little learning curve on how you're gonna use it.
      I find that when I use Playbox, it's a fun experiment, and I find something I really like, but it sort of surprises me how I end up using it.
      And once you export MIDI from Playbox you can still edit inside of Playbox. You can still switch up the notes and instruments all you want. But just remember that the MIDI clip is exporting the chords that were assigned inside Playbox. That exported MIDI clip is what you would put on other instruments, not putting back into playbox.

    • @LFiers
      @LFiers 2 года назад

      @@ThisIsOnesto Thanks for your comments. Can you elaborate on "there will be a learning curve in how you want to use it"? I'm not sure what you mean. So it'd be different in using it for hip-hop and trap etc then other genres?
      In your opinion, what VST would be great for coming up with chord progressions for hip-hop? Is Scaler good for this? I can play piano a little but something to help with chords and progressions is what I'm after. Thanks!

      @@LFiers If you're someone new to chords then I would get Playbox once you're more comfortable with chord progressions. Playbox is such a unique chord playing experience that it wouldn't be a good tool/instrument to learn with.
      Sure you could drop MIDI chords into it, but I would recommend learning chords outside of Playbox.
      I haven't tried Scaler myself but it seems like a great tool to help generate chord progressions around specific genres.

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  2 года назад +1

      @@LFiers That's a great question. I honestly think what's been the best and funnest way to get better at chords is playing your favorite songs.
      What I would often do is use google to find the chords to some of my favorite songs and then just play them. I would do that a lot. And I ended up learning about common chord progressions and how to play in different keys. If a song is in a key that I don't want to learn, I would transpose it myself to a key that I'm more comfortable with. And that exercise alone lets you learn a lot.
      I tried Melodics before for finger drumming because that's something I'm not very good at, and I think if I had the time to really stick with it, I would have improved. I also tried melodics for keys but since I'm really comfortable with playing, Melodics really wasn't a fit for me.

      Thanks so much for your honesty and sharing your thoughts. I always get a little queasy when words like "revolutionary" and "game-changer" are used for new plugins that we're all learning about. So I share your sentiments.
      Revolutionary's a big word. It's leaving a lot of room for disappointment, and I hate being disappointed and disappointing others.
      Anyways, let me share a little on how this plugin can be useful. It's useful in two main ways. It helps you generate chords for chord progressions. You can either use the chord libraries found in the plugin or you can record your own in there to play around with.
      The other way this is useful is by helping you layer up your chords with all kinds of sounds. So it's helpful for sound design because it helps generates those chord layers really really fast.
      But honestly, like with most instruments, there's tons of potential but people gotta learn how to use and master it. Hopefully this helps fill some of those blanks.
