I haven't slept in two days... I haven't been this inspired by a VST in since I bought MASCHINE 10 Years Ago. Wait till you realize how easy it is to create your own chords, or drag in your own samples and midi info. It is absolutely outstanding. It is so well curated. I'd love to meet the team behind the design. Some of these samples maybe nothing but more than samples from their enormous library. It goes to show you the possibilities that many of us weren't even aware could be achieved with only stacking these types of textures and sound design. What will set this plugin from everything else in this genre of VST's would be.... EXPANSIONS! Enjoy... I'm going to play with my Playbox.

The very least I could do is leave comment and share my excitement about it. Sometimes it takes me 15 to 20 minutes to compose my thoughts and get my sentences in a way that someone can understand them. I’m not to bright when it comes to leaving comments. So sorry you considered it spamming,… I’d chalk it up to, I’m lazy and I should have stayed in high school and graduated.

I’m still using to this day on many of my tracks. You’ll never have to look for inspiration again. You youngsters like to use the term “FIRE” well Playbox is a Three Alam Fire. I promise you it’ll be worth the purchase. I chose Native instruments new subscription service and ended up saving a lot as we’ll I received Melt. I already in Komplete Ultra. No brainer.
Just got this instrument in K14. It's special to say the least. Straight forward at first glance, and also advanced when you delve deeper. I knew I needed to come to this channel, because pretty much every NI instrument is covered here, and explained very well. I was not disappointed! Thanks Jef.
I recently upgraded to Komplete Standard and I was amazed by lots of libraries. Especially this one. For me it activates inspirations needed with my ideas. Love it. Thank you for this helpful video!
Great Video Thank you. I use it all the time (as part of my Komplete Now package). I love it. Very inspiring and great for quirky or cinematic back tracks. I wish they would make expansion packs for it. Or even a Playbox II.
My goodness! I remember stumbling across this thing when I updated my Komplete and thought, it's neat, cute lil' cubes with some random sounds... Didn't seem very useful at first. Thank You for opening me eyes, I'll be using this a lot more now!:)

Very comprehensive video so thank you. This plug-in is amazing. What I haven’t been able to figure out is how to route each note/sample to its own track. The plug-in allows you to adjust the volume and panning of each sample but I see no way to do route each note/sample to separate tracks which is a must for processing.

Borrow it for a month by signing up for Now for the free month and you’ll likely end up buying it. That’s what I did.. it’s definitely worth it. Things like Piano Colors and Ashlight are a little too similar to things I already have in K13 CE, but this is completely different to anything they’ve done before. Kind of annoyed I missed this while it was on sale.
I have played with this for a few hours and it really is an inspirational song starter and sometimes a great instrument in its own right. I have generated a number of tracks using this. I worry however that the sounds might become too familiar with time so it is great to have the midi file drag and drop feature so you can build your own sounds. It is pricey for what it is though
I like your tip with turning off the effects if you have timing issues. Another way you can fix it is record without a metronome the music at the tempo in the arp, with all the off timing, then bounce the track, then warp the audio to work in the tempo that's recorded in the clip. It's another work around, but it does lock you into what you recorded on the track.

Just got this plugin yesterday and was playing around with it. It's fun but kinda confusing at start. Didn't know how to Mute single sounds, Copy them, Export chords etc. All this stuff covered in the video + a lot more learned from you. Great video, thanks a lot!
Thanks for the video, Jef! I just bought Playbox and within minutes, I have a song started. I used my own MIDI and played around with the sounds and the inspiration flowed from there! Loving this plugin so far! I wonder how this works when you're mixing. These chords in Playbox can have a variety of sounds like bass, synth, vox and other instruments so there could be lots of high and low sounds in one chord.
Yeah, the more vids I view on this dealie NI released, the more I’m convinced this is an all-in-one TRACK starter. I kinda can’t see full songs developing from this, and I’m not even a “real” musician. Thanx, Jef…now I know.
THANKYOUUUU! Eug my biggest struggle was the timing issues!! I was looking up every possible way to sync them.... ends up there isnt a super easy/fast way. Wish they would make it easier to sync to Ableton BPM.... but thank you for the knowledge!
Its such shame that it doesn't have a single note play mode, with the accompanying 8 chords... such a great sound engine and concept though, especially with user chord and sample import.
Lemme just say awesome instructional video as usual. I wish I had watched this before I purchased it because I'm not totally stoked on it based on my workflow. I thought this would be kind of a get out of my way and play type of thing. But I'm really gonna have to manipulate it to fit my music. I purchased it based on the NI videos which do a great job of selling it, but then I was playing around with it thinking "WTF am I doing wrong? I need to check out Jef Gibbon's video." And low and behold if I had I would have made a different choice. Don't be like me. Watch this video first before purchasing this plug in. Could have saved myself $150.
It’s a different one and not for everyone! I think you might be able to sell your license, check the forums… I’m always trying to show the quirks, glad that’s what you’re seeing. But I also had a commenter who hadn’t slept because he loved this instrument so much! Everyone has such different needs. Hope you can sell it!
Thanks for the walkthrough. Since I have K13 CE I was hesitant on spending more on another Kontakt instrument. I’ve already fallen for that with Piano Colors and Ashlight while they were on sale so I pretty much already own K14.., but this demo and trying it out by borrowing it with a month of free Now, and yeah.. take my $200.. ugh. That said - this is everything SampleLogic’s plug ins could be and they’re still $400 somehow. Favorite feature with this is using my own samples. I took a preset that sounded a little “meh”, and dragged some of my MKS-80, Matriarch and Juno samples in and suddenly it sounded amazing.
Play box is still entirely its own thing… and more powerful in some ways. I don’t use it but I know some people really love it for starting ideas. I just always forget how to use it and have to watch my own video 😜

Another cool video! I’ve tried a bunch of these chord utilities because of neurological issues affecting my hands/fingers. Not a fan of plugins that only record the midi trigger note - without the full midi chords, you can’t switch to a different VST. I’ve found Scaler 2.5 for $59 is the best and has detect, suggester and dozens of instrument sounds included.
Thanks! Yeah it’s a neat one, and you can export the chords as midi, but not necessarily in the sequence you composed them… that would be a nice feature!! I’ve got to look at scaler…

Hmmm... This seemed really cool and interesting to me, but the fact that rhythm can be difficult makes it a no-go for now. Maybe in the future I'll try it.
This looks amazing but the price is way too high for what it is. I love the custom randomizers. I love you can buikd your own chords AND ad samples. It does look to be an inspiring tool for creating interesting combinations of sounds.
what if you just want one instrument, say the bass. i cant figure out how to mute everything else. im literally filtering it in my daw. im feeling this is a sample pack and theyre trying to fool you into thinkingg youre playing the music lol

Also would love to load/randomize some of my monster sample library which has become far too big to remember or ever listen to every one of. As usual you have a different and deeper take. It looks a bit limiting for someone who plays, the sounds and textures are nice but it just seems like the way for a new generation of lads to sound the same. I may be wrong... but it seems like it strips out an element of the creator which is your own ability to play...
@@IknowMoreThanYou You could look for that, or "audition." I think it's an amazing plugin. Also, for the chords, when you randomize, it not only changes the sound layers, but also the scale the chords are played in. You can also manually change that as well.
Never thought of inputting a different sample per notes in a chord, and It honestly doesn't sound so good to me. Sounds too over processed. Fake. I can definitely see the potential, but it's a bit of a rabbit hole I have no interest in falling into. Maybe someday....I am still looking for a replacement for the huge loss of Absynth. This is no Absynth. Not yet anyways
What a strange concept and instrument ! Surely innovative and a wonder sample based tool for all non really educated AI dependent sound-designers and music makers ! Is the future of music going to be definitely held by lazy creators ? Roll the dices and have fun ?! Conscious customization functionalities are here too but then feel definitely frustrated not to have the possibilty to freely play it on the whole keyboard range ! What is it with this new trend of purposely and artificially downgrading the quality of the sound with pops, cracks, horrible tone and such? Is it nostalgia? I don't get it, and a I find it a tad irritating.
NI slowly losing the plot....leaving old but functional Mac users behind, stupidly updating Kontakt without any help for .1 users.... causing third parties to mislead users...no wonder new companies are developing their own engines! Long live Spitfire et al.

I highly doubt that this will be included in Komplete 14 even the collectors edition prob won’t include it.

You can load your own samples into Playbox too. Have a look at that, it'll open a whole new world :-)

There's a piano mode, where the chords go away, and the sounds are completely playable.

@@IknowMoreThanYou You could look for that, or "audition." I think it's an amazing plugin. Also, for the chords, when you randomize, it not only changes the sound layers, but also the scale the chords are played in. You can also manually change that as well.

Never thought of inputting a different sample per notes in a chord, and It honestly doesn't sound so good to me. Sounds too over processed. Fake. I can definitely see the potential, but it's a bit of a rabbit hole I have no interest in falling into. Maybe someday....I am still looking for a replacement for the huge loss of Absynth. This is no Absynth. Not yet anyways

Conscious customization functionalities are here too but then feel definitely frustrated not to have the possibilty to freely play it on the whole keyboard range !

What is it with this new trend of purposely and artificially downgrading the quality of the sound with pops, cracks, horrible tone and such? Is it nostalgia? I don't get it, and a I find it a tad irritating.
Honestly it kinda sounds what AI thinks music is. Sorta terrible.
NI slowly losing the plot....leaving old but functional Mac users behind, stupidly updating Kontakt without any help for .1 users.... causing third parties to mislead users...no wonder new companies are developing their own engines! Long live Spitfire et al.
