  • SEE PINNED COMMENT ON FILLING AND BLEEDING YOUR LS V8!
    Hi Everyone,
    This week i show you how to replace your water pump on a Holden VE V8, or Pontiac G8 for those in the States. This will also work for any L98, LS2 or LS3 equiped GM car such as the Pontiac GTO Coupes, any VZ ,VE or VF HSV Clubsport, GTS, Senator etc. as well as the Chevrolet SS.
    There are two types of water pumps used on these motors. This was the earlier style where the top hose outlet is above and to the left of the pulley. There is also a later style pump where the outlet is to the top right of the pulley.
    Make sure you shop around for a water pump - I got this for $380 AUD - it is a genuine GM unit. Prices range from $795 for OEM ones from dealerships to $200 parts store specials (read el cheapo). I got this one online - if you can afford to wait for delivery - its the best option. Just make sure they supply 2 gaskets!!
    The Job was pretty straight forward and took about 90 minutes all up. If you are half way decent with spanners, you should be able to do this yourself. Just take your time and make sure you don't make a mess in your shed like i did...

    A Quick note on filling and bleeding the system. A few people I have spoke to since have said to top up via the heater hoses to get in behind the thermostat, or pour straight down the top hose into the water pump (rather than the radiator) to make sure the block fills and you don't inadvertently run the pump dry! Thanks for stopping by and good luck with your repair!

      Also a good preventative maintenance item is the power steering fluid, so easy its not funny, just go to a medical supply place which sells large fluid syringes which holds about 50 to 75mm and put a small hose on the end of it, suck out the old power steering fluid put in new fluid and turn the steering a few time lock to lock and keep replacing the fluid in the power steering reservoir ,till its all nice and ed, theres also power steering treatment stuff from Wynns, which i would recommend putting it in once you know the fluid in the reservoir is clean fluid, that way it helps with chatter and friction etc. cheers well done with the upload. :)

      Thanks mate! the job is easy as - but please make sure you know how to bleed the system properly. I fked mine up the first time when i flushed the cooling system and stuffed up the pump!! From what i remember you need to either fill from the heater hoses, or directly down the top hose to fill behind the t'stat and water pump so it doesn't run dry. Then when you start it, you need to give it some RPM, rather than let it idle like i did, as i think there is some sort of pressure driven bypass in these LS engines. If i find the thread I will stick it here!

      G'day mate! Thanks for the comment! Hmm I reckon if your water pump is squealing it's on the way out. If you find my instagram (Meatball_Garage) I have a couple of videos of my water pump making that squeeky noise - once it did that i binned it and replaced it (I ended up replacing like 3 on the VE over its life with me).
      If you do replace it - it is super important to make sure you fill the block up with coolant directly from the heater hoses or from the top hose (take it off the radiator, and pour the coolant straight down into the block). It's very easy to run the pumps dry and and that inevitably can cook your pump! Good luck with it mate!

    Well done, you should have brought a new cap as well, other than that perfect upload. :) i know those hose clamps are good, but over time with heat they can go brittle and the same with the plastic connectors for the heater hoses. :) Which is why i like to use the stainless hose clamps, but be very careful when tightening them up, thats why they use those type of clamps of areas where theres plastic connections maybe. :)

      @@MeatballGarage No champ i have a 2015 VF SSV REDLINE and so far so good, just brought the coolant penrite always used penrite and its due for a coolant change with the flush item from penrite, so brought the 2 X 5lt pre mix which is 50/50 and will buy 1 X 1lt concentrate just in case i need it and always use distilled water as alloy bocks and other components do not like the minerals in the tap water at all, makes your coolant only last 1/2 the time really, i used to sell coolants and trust me if you do the right thing, especially if you buy a 2nd hand car with heaps of km's its best to change the rubber hose's and clamps that way theres no chyance of them going brittle and cracking as well, but then again it all comes down to who owned it and how many times they have done the job of preventative maintenance, like i mentioned the cap with so much rust in it is a sure way of knowing that the chances of the heater hoses and other hoses might get pin holes in them and thus better to change them, especially if they show any signs of swelling etc, but well done champ and kepp up the great work. :)

    What prompted you to change it in the first place? My L77 has an irregular squeak in the area, after it warms up. First step in my process of elimination was to hit multiple pulleys with some good ol wd40. No change.

    • @MeatballGarage
      @MeatballGarage  4 года назад +1

      Hi mate! In the video prior to this one (coolant flush) I reckon I stuffed up filling and bleeding the system correctly - causing to run the pump dry on initial start up, which from what i can tell stuffs up the seals on the bearing. It would proper squeal when hot. Have a look at my Instagram as there is some more footage of the knackered pump on there (hopefully you can eliminate water pump from your squeak from looking at that). The pump would cool fine even when squealing but it would be a matter of time before it gave up (this has happened to me before!) so took no chances and popped another one on.
      I use to to have just an irregular squeak on cold starts, first point of call for me was whack a new belt on - which cured it no worries. You could use the old screwdriver to the ear trick to see if you can identify which pulley is the cause (see this vid here - ruclips.net/video/U927cYhQXB4/видео.html) Just be careful using WD40 as i heard it does more harm than good on these LS pulleys too! Is your squeak constant or come and go once the car is warmed op?

    • @OutdoorsCBR

    • @MeatballGarage
      @MeatballGarage  3 года назад

      G'day Hayden! First up - how many kms did you get out of your water pump?
      When I did this my theory was I wanted to retain as much coolant that was in the radiator as I could. So just undid the hoses and sacrificed whatever was in the block. I did a coolant flush before this video and used the drain plug under the rad - even then I found the block still retained a heap of coolant. I am positive there is a better way to do this! If you see any of my other videos you will quickly learn I'm a fair hack!!
      Also - Make sure you bleed the system correctly. These water pumps dont like running dry (ask me how i know this...) When you fill it again for the first time, make sure you get some coolant in behind the thermostat by dumping it directly down the top hose or filling by the heater hoses. Also give it some RPM too as these have some sort of pressure related bypass and if left to just idle wont bleed.
      Cheers!!

There is a short video on my instagram that shows this (instagram.com/p/B8D7wpMpYvX/?) I took the belt off and turned it by hand to isolate the noise to the WP.
      When it was properly cactus, you could actually see no flow from the block into the radiator as well - looking at the coolant with the cap off.
      If yours is squeaking when cold - it might just be your belt. 214k is a bloody good innings so it could be due. I had a cold squeak for a while but a new belt made the thing run quiet as a mouse!
      Try those couple of things out and let us know how you go!
      Cheers - Marc

      Oh man that sucks! No wonder so many people have a love hate relationship (including me) with these things. Never done a crank angle sensor - But yeah i think it's right near the starter. Have a look at some Como/G8 forums - they are usually pretty good resources for things like this. How did you know you had to replace that? What symptoms were you getting?

      @@MeatballGarage hey bud. Had one go In a v6 vt. Mission to get to. It was behind harmonic balencer. Your car will fail to start at times and can run really rough. But to answer your question my scan tool told me why the engine light was on.. Hasent done it since and I haven't even gotten around to it yet...

      @@stiopicmyosick Nice mate! Make sure you read the pinned comment up top about refilling and bleeding your cooling system after changing the pump. You also need to give it some RPM when bleeding it and don't let it idle as there was some bypass valve in the system (from what i read) I did it wrong and cooked it once - hence the need for this video! Cheers and good luck with the job!!

    No drain no good !!!

      Hey Jayj! - You can drain the radiator before you do this job but there will always be residual water in the block. I decided to try and save as much water in the radiator that I could and sacrifice whatever came out of the block instead. How would you go about it yourself?
      Cheers for commenting mate!

      Hey Mike - sorry for the late reply? Did you end up finding this out?
      In my book it says the fuse is located in the fuse box under the bonnet - Fuse number F21 - It's a 15a fuse. Let us know mate!
