    Hey mate ,finally got round to changing thermostat to the Clevo as you recommended. Also fitted new temp sensor to block .all good ,now the dash gauge worked when car got to running temp ,so typed up coolant and put cap on radiator, now temp gauge comes up a bit then decides it needs a rest and not work , but will then start to come up then go down again m. Do you use dash gauge or can u recommend an aftermarket one at all . Thanks again for that video 👍

    • @MeatballGarage
      @MeatballGarage 3 дня назад

      G'day Ian! Ahh bugger - I bloody hate dash gremlins. What temp gauge are you using? (GT style, factory style) Where is the sender located in the block and is it the correct sender? In my factory dash - i think i had an incorrect sender as the gauge was really happy - and fluctuated between 1/4 and 3/4 when the fan would go on and off! I use the GT style gauge and it behaves reasonably accurately to what my old mechanical one did. If you can get a cheapo mechanical gauge in just to verify what the car runs at at idle/cruise etc. that would be the way to go. As long as you get something with numbers that are easy to read and in the temp range of the clevo you should be sweet. If all is well, from there you can start to trouble shoot the factory gauges issues.....or do what i want to do and give it to an auto elec to figure it out 😁 Cheers mate and let us know how you go!

      G'day mate! The system front to back is 1 and 3/4 inch 4 into 1 pacemaker extractors. 2.5 inch twin system with straight through mufflers. No idea the brand of muffler though sorry. This car cruises quietly but is loud as shit when you step on it. The GT which has a factory style system has a great cruise burble but is relatively quiet under WOT. At some stage id look at replacing the mufflers on the Fairmont with something that takes the raspyness out of the note. Cheers!

      That is a pretty keen eye there Steve. I had to go compare my windows to the old mans GT. I love the quarter windows - great air con at 60mph!! Cheers mate!

It cruises pretty quiet but when you step on it she is loud! It does seem a bit raspy at some RPM which is the only thing i dont like about it. Bleed every bubble from your engine from the top of your radiator cap with a Repco Radiator bucket then you know there is zero air pockets in the engine and entire cooling system. And NEVER mix different grades of coolant like you did. The green and yellow coolant are not good for Old School Engines as they have a corrosive inhibitor in them. Use ALWAYS Penrite Old School Classic Radiator Coolant which you mix with water.

    • @MeatballGarage
      @MeatballGarage 3 дня назад

      Spot on - bleeding is bloody important! I usually just jack mine up a little, never had one of those buckets but should really invest. They look like a great bit of kit. Agree never mix coolants - I just used a concentrate and demineralised water so am sweet. Never considered the 'old school coolant', will have to check it out. I like to flush mine every 12 months or so in which case I might switch to it - thanks for the tip!

  • @stevepierce3509
    @stevepierce3509 Месяц назад

    Mate you didn't need to go to that extreme. Get your hands on a genuine FoMoCo Radiator for a V8 and all your problems would be solved. Putting in this doesn't look or match the vehicle whatsoever and could have been way easier achieved given I run an XW GT 351 in the NT where its way hotter than where you are based with a 160 thermostat and no issues whatsoever. The only time it gets to 180 is when I pull up and turn it off , then when I start the engine back up it drops almost instantly back to 160. And even at lights in traffic.

    • @MeatballGarage
      @MeatballGarage 3 дня назад

      G’day mate, Ahh the old original vs modern cooling debate! This car had the cross flow in it already, so was keen to just work with what I had. I found the mechanical fan worked fine but ended up getting hot when in Melbournes slow moving traffic. The thermo was able to keep the temperature steady even when crawling along in a traffic jam on a hot day. I suppose the cooling discussion always comes down to what suits your application and use case. Plenty of blokes have told me original is the way to go - others have said go a big alloy rad and thermo fans. To be honest, as long as it works I couldn’t care less! I do like the simplicity and reliability of a mechanical fan though…but also love the extra hp gained by not having an engine fan (and less risk taking a finger off when playing with the carby too)! Cheers mate!

    • @MeatballGarage

      G'day mate! Cheers she has a great chop at idle this thing, but I reckon its a bit raspy up top. It has Pacemaker 1 & 3/4 4 into 1 headers on it, then its into a 2 1/2 inch system with a balance pipe and one straight through muffler (no idea what brand) each side. It sounds great at cruise and when you pound it (its loud). I have heard smaller, simpler systems sound good too. If your car is low - id steer clear of 4 into 1s as mine scrape bloody everywhere at the collector flange. Should have gone try ys. What is on yours now? Cheers!

    Anyone done this with an 05 v6 statesman or commodore?

      Jump on a couple of commodore forums or facebook groups mate - might be some folks online that might be in the know 👍

    If it's a push button start and it womt detect the key, the starter button pulls off and you can put the key in and turn

      G'day Rodrigo - mate It was a guestimate to be honest and 3 years on after making that video, I am still fine tuning the carby, jets and power valve. The only accurate way to do it is to get your hands on a wideband gauge and actually see how rich or lean you are at each circuit in the carby. I have just ordered one as i was sick of guessing and fouling plugs! What engine/carb are you running mate? Cheers! Marc

      G'day mate! I know right! How the bloody hell do they end up in there? I have never seen a car that accommodates creepy crawlies as well as the VE commodore! Have you taken apart your tail lights and tried to shake em out?

    Great video mate! awesome. I had a lot of overheating issues with my Monaro when I first bought it, found the wiring to be very undersized, with yellow joiners with thin wires in between, the yellow joiners were brown! and the earth wire (yes, single one) that went to two AU thermos, was rock hard... haha replaced it all with a much thicker dual twin core, and twin relays my overheating problem went away for good!

      Cheers mate!! Ah fairdinkum? I reckon that would happen a lot actually - blokes just fitting thermo fans with what ever wiring they have lying around. Only to melt it all and have a fan that isn't getting the juice that is required!! Did your fans pick up much grunt when you made these changes? What temp does your Munro like to hang around? Also - cheers for the call out for this weekend - might be a bit hard to get down there at that time with the little fella but i'll give it a crack! Forgot Motorex was even on TBH! Cheers!!!

      @@MeatballGarage Oh shit yeah mate the grunt was at least 70% better, you could feel them pushing air under the bonnet when it was up and when standing next to the drivers door, couldn't do that before. Not sure on temp exactly I need to hook up my aftermarket gauge, but used to always run just under the hot mark back then, even on cooler days. Now its half way. No probs mate, Hope to see you at MotorEx or at our event, I'll give ya a sticker if you come say Gday 👍 Keep up the awesome content mate
