The first time I heard Kate Wolf sing Green Eyes Tears rolled down my face. What a magnificent singer. Sending this comment from Newfoundland Labrador Canada. Kate found her way into my heart that day. May that wonderful lady Rest in Peace.
She came thru Santa Cruz all the time for concerts for Native Americans. Loved her and will always love her music and commitment to our communities. Rest in Power.
I grew up on a farm out in the country, no tv, no paved roads, just the woods and my mothers record collection. This was one of ger many records. This music is in my soul and helped raise me.

To feed a hawk coming round , fresh as I could from some defrosted pork over steamed water with a fork to tenderize. Hawks around here most of the time. But I'm very partial to My Crows. I hope they won't take offense. I don't know ya, but I pikt this reply/ comment platform to leave my condolences and my interest. Thank you hope that is OK. I'm not able to leave a comment on my own why idk. But I'm not letting that stand in my way. Maybe this special lady will recognize that today for me , she walks freely among the Hawks. And Wolves. Mode itbex3.
I am priviliged to have retired to France in the country. In the evening on our verhanda I can watch the sunset and the red tailed hogs and now I have discovered the beautiful voice and words from Kate only to learn she died so many years ago. RIP dear angel...I'm very old and I will listen to your voice until I join you
This is the kind of music I can listen forever. Redtailed Hawk and Green Eyes are two of my favourites. Kate's voice is so relax and soothing and you can't hear this from today's so-called divas.
Add "Here in California", "These Times We're Livin' In", "Across the Great Divide"...people say that she should have been "bigger", but she's the perfect size for me to treasure. Always has been. (Kinda like Iris Dement and Richard Thompson. The kind of artists who remind you that there is beauty and good in this world and that you and some other people can tell it from the dross.)
The first time I heard Kate was on KVMR radio (Nevada City). Driving over the Altamont Pass in the golden hour just before sunset, I heard this beautiful voice singing about "the golden rollin' hills of California..." It was one of those almost surreal moments when what you are hearing and what you are seeing are in complete synchronicity. After the song, the announcer came on and said: "That was Kate Wolf, who died last night. Rest well, Kate." What a profound loss.
Me too, when I first heard her sing this song, I was completely blown away. Now every time I hear it, it reminds me of years past and driving around Marin County and the beautiful rolling hills. What a beautiful memory and God grant her peace. I heard she died of breast cancer, probably from the same thing that almost killed Cheryl Crow, don't leave your plastic water bottles in the sun, they will give off chemicals and those chemicals will kill you.
When I die, play this one for me please... My favorite to play on my own guitar and sing... Miss you Kate... You and your music are my favorite ❤ Nina keep on playing... Nobody plays guitar like this , you're the best... One of a kind... 🎶
I was lucky enough to meet and work with Kate Wolf a couple of times in the early 80s in Berkeley. Even had she not sung a single note in her entire life, the world would still be a better place for her having been here.
@Marmot Songs. What a privilige you had. Your comment, almost moved me to tears, cause it's so true, that people like Kate Wolf shine such a positive light on humanity. I am so sorry, she is no longer among us.
I had the honor and pleasure to spend an evening with George Schroeder, who wrote this song and since to call him friend. What a beautiful song by Kate, Nina and friend. He sang and played it well, despite his years. Thanks George!
I moved back East from California in 1979. Driving to work one day I heard "Here in California." I had to pull over to the side of the road to listen and get my emotions under control. listening to hear who the artist was, they said, "The late great Kate Wolf." I've been a fan ever since.
This song gives me chills! I live at the base of the golden rolling East Bay, CA hills and this really hits home. Northern California native. Born and Raised.
So cool how people are discovering Kate through this platform ! I was lucky to see her perform twice ( 82’/83’ ) and was so impressed ! She was the best of us, but humble at the same time - so rare to find.
Thank you for this. I had the honor of knowing her briefly in the 80's. A fellow-minstrel she'd known for many years in San Francisco was in a folk-duo with me in Sonoma (circa 83-84). I just wanted to thank you for making the halcyon days in West Marin, Sonoma, & Mendocino live again. I cry when I see her, but not for myself; it is for the less fortunate souls who didn't experience her magic in-person. Unselfish and STRONG. Brother Warrior, Eyes of a Painter. There WAS gold in California Kate
Written by George Schroder, 1975. I don't know if he ever recorded it himself, but Kate Wolf and her friends performed it beautifully. I love the mandolin in this song.
We lost so many wonderful singer/songwriters too early cause of mental and physical deseases. I hope he called them home so early, to sing with the saints and angels. Always on my mind, Kate and all the others.
Beautiful music Kate, Nina and Rick. Kate Wolf deserves to be internationally as famous as Bob Dylan, The Beatles etc. Kate was, is, an amazing talent and l just love her sweet music.
I only discovered Kate about a month ago on You Tube. Her songs and her voice are just magical. So sad she died so young and why isn’t she better known!!!
I always loved her music, voice and text. Always. By the way: she is a wonderful looking girl, but that do not destroy her music abilities. Not at all!!
This song will live forever. Nina Gerber is a genius. You can see Kate getting into it when the mandolin comes in. Kate doesn't look well. I heard her play once when she visited Barry Olivier's guitar class in Berkeley. She was young; I thought she was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. I couldn't believe hat I was hearing. I staggered out into the Berkeley sun and thanked God I was alive.
I'm so happy I've just discovered this wonderful voice and this singer of the past whose life on earth was unfortunately too short. But she will Always stay alive in her fans' souls. Now I'm just joining the crowd.

I love this era of folk music full of hope and the colour of the country and love of a life companion. Thank you Kate gave us a glimpse of a better world.
Hello, Jeff, I agree. At the 2:59 mark, Kate smiles after Nina Gerber's solo. I suggest it is the most brilliantly creative mando solo I've ever heard. Those are eighth note triplets she plays in the second mando solo at 3:58. My playing improved by watching her. She has also made an impact on my guitar playing. Her skills with melody and timing are stunning. Go, Nina, Go. Regards, George Armstrong
I was fortunate to catch her live when she accompanied Karla Bonoff here in Bellingham, WA in 2014. She was amazing. It didn't surprise me, as I'd been listening to her for decades as Kate Wolf's accompanists and always had liked her sound.
Nina and Kate were amazing together . Such synchronicity , such art , such musicianship , such feeling . There's nothing quite like being good , or great , at what you do . . .and sharing it with the world . Kate, you will always be remembered . In times like this , when harsh words and feelings fill the space around us , we need the soft , lovely and soulful music you gave us . Thanks , Girl . George Lewis, SR.
I was in northern Africa with a Peacekeeping mission while in the army....when a friend sent me a cassette from an el paso, tx radio station...saying that show was in memory of Kate. I cried like a little girl at the loss. Never met her, but, loved who she was.
I have often wondered how a woman I have never met could capture the finest nuances of my feelings in her songs. If I didn't know better, I would swear she had been sitting in my home, observing my feelings on love, life, and happiness.
I've lived in NoCal since 1975 and love folk music of her style but never heard of her until last year through Pandora. Last June I went to her memorial concert in Laytonville and plan to attend again in 2011. I can't seem to get her tunes out of my head. But then I really don't want to.
I listened to her early years...I was enthralled....she left this world far too soon....I listen to Kate Wolf any time I need a peaceful moment in my life...she is missed...
I havnt been to Cali since 1999 to visit a friend i met when i lived in San Diego from 1990-1993. I drove threw the entire state camping out in beautiful hills and ocean shores, i never even knew this gem was there. My days are very different now filled with loneliness and sadness. I want to go back for good to the place that made my heart stop beating so that i could truly here all that is golden. I just started listening to Kate who i never would have known if not for the Rainbow girls. Thank you for your beautiful gift. May all who are suffering have peace in there heart.
The first time I saw the beginning of this video, I figured Kate had some high school girl on stage with her, to get some experience. Nina looks so young and girlish. Then Nina started to play, and my goodness, she put out music that Ricky Skaggs or Bill Monroe would have been proud of. Her work on this song is among the finest works I have ever heard. And there is one point, there they are all playing, and Nina takes that mandolin solo. I can see Kate catching the fire from it, and when they all kick back in, they are all truly inspired. Nina is a great musician.
Nina WAS a high school girl when she started playing with Kate. Nina said her goal when she started playing was to get good enough to play with Kate. And boy did she ever. When I first did sound for Kate in Mendocino California, Nina had just started appearing publicly with Kate, and she was still in high school at that time, in 1979. Owl Records, founded by Kate and still run by her family, just announced the coming release of a new collection CD titled Kate Wolf: Live in Mendocino. It should be released by June 2018. You can find details and song samples at www.katewolf.com/albums/live-in-mendocino. Nina's mando playing on this song on the new album was even better than on this video, if you can imagine such a thing. Today's date, January 27, was Kate's birthday, and one year ago this date there was a special Kate Wolf 75 concert at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley that featured Nina Gerber and many others of Kate's friends and band mates.
I miss the Golden rolling hills of California Kate and Nina take me back Every time.. ..outstanding Greetings from Dublin Ireland brothers and sisters.....
One of the absolute best songs ever. A masterpiece. Have listened to the song hundreds of times but this is the 1st time I've seen it on youtube. In my top 5 songs of all time.
Kate's songwriting and concerts/recordings epitomized the rich, artistic and nature infused lifestyle and spirit of our beloved Northern California's soul. Rest in Peace my friend and colleague.
I remember seeing Nina Gerber play the mandolin back in the 70's. She plays guitar now .... just as beautifully. Kate's voice and her mandolin are beautiful!
For those folks who are just discovering Kate Wolf, you might be interested in the Kate Wolf Festival each June (except for 2020) in Sebastopol, CA. Also KPFA Berkeley has some awesome Sunday shows including "Across The Great Divide", the show for which Kate Wolf wrote the theme/title song.
It is me who is always listening to Kate Wolf’s wonderful voice and music ! And I am an old lady from Germany .
No love. I'm a 66 year old from England. Just came across her last week. We must "use our ears" whilst we still have them ! Great stuff, 2301.

first time hearing these folks , wow . so beautiful .

I agree with most of the comments about Kate, the song and the music. But please don't ignore Nina's performance.
