    Very good documentary about the Maswik Lodge.
    Hopi Indians !! oh big story here along with Ancient Aliens.
    Love those light fittings in the dinning room area.
    You have put this on the map for many I think.
    Great work GCHiker ! 👍
    Wishing everyone a great weekend from Paul & Kathy in War torn Britain ! 🤝👍✊

      Thanks so much for your kind words and for watching. It strikes me as a shame that the Lodge has a rich history, but it is mostly unknown.

    Thank you for sharing this wonderful video with us. I am so glad that I watched it. I couldn't agree with you more about how much they care about working class people. Its a shame that Grand Canyon just don't care at all. Thanks again. Good job 👍

      I think the old-time superintendent got it right, it is the people of modest means the parks should serve the most. Unfortunately, with today's policies, we are moving in the opposite direction.

    That is a really cool research project, thanks for sharing all this information with us. I think people will respect the place more now that they understand it.

    This has so much interesting history and facts! I do enjoy the old photos! Your young self on your 1st trip. I imagine borrowing 2k was quite a big deal bag in the day. I do wish the lodging places were more affordable for everyone.

      Thank you. It is a funny but true story that I told my father I wished he had bought a new car instead. But I was eleven. It is a real shame that they keep raising the prices of the National Park Lodges. It has led me to reducing the frequency of my visits because of the inceasing costs. Thanks for watching!

    Based upon the information you have provided, I think you are right, it is elitism. It's too bad they don't respect the hardworking people who made the visit to Grand Canyon. Thanks for the interesting history and analysis.

    I loved hearing the story and seeing the photo of your first trip here. That trip has seemed to have had such a big impact on you and probably helped you develop a love of this place. I enjoyed hearing about this history of this lodging area. National parks need more of these affordable lodging options for families to stay in.

    • @GC-Hiker
      @GC-Hiker  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks so much. I could not agree more about the affordability. They adopted a new federal regulation in late 2023 that allows the vendors to charge more for the rooms. I hope to find the time to make a video about that one of these days, but the effect is that it is pricing people of moderate means out of staying in the National Parks.

      Thanks so much, it was frustrating to me that this place had no accessible history, so I did a lot of digging to get the sparse information I found. At least some of the history is out there now. Thanks for watching!

      The Grand Canyon Museum Collection, an office located in the Park, has lots of information available about all aspects of the history of the Canyon. That was my primary source, with some other bits and pieces collected on the internet. Thanks for watching!

    Very nice video! As an employee there for AmFac in 1978, I shared a small cabin at Motor Lodge with two other young guys. Examples of those employee cabins can be seen 28 seconds into your video. Very rustic, but perfect for a 90-day summer contract with AmFac.

      Thank you for sharing that memory. It must have been a fun Summer! Do you recall how much of Maswik North was done at that time, and did they still have the old reception building? The dates are so hard to come by, and the knowledge of someone who was there would be helpful. Thanks for your comment.

    • @billarmstrong6540
      @billarmstrong6540 2 месяца назад

      @@GC-Hiker I think the north was completely open then, but I may be wrong. I worked on the South Rim for the summers of 1977, 78 and 79, earning money to return to college each fall semester. Incredibly fun times and great coworkers. I began as a Yavapai Lodge laundry worker in '77 and ended the last summer as a Bright Angel bellman. Great tips carrying luggage back then!

      Also, I don't recall an old reception building at Motor Lodge. That may have been converted to the employee cafeteria by the time I began working there.

    • @GC-Hiker

      @@billarmstrong6540 Cool, thanks for those clarifications. The buildings I stay in are dated around 1979, so that is consistent. I don't know why the Park does not have an accurate history. Thanks for the information about the reception building, I will try to reasearch when the old building went away when I get the time. I appreciate your help with the timeline. Sounds like great place to have worked Summers.
