    Hey Naasir.
    I want you to know there are those who really appreciate these videos you make.
    You're literarily helping a generation of new professionals. Again, you're amazing.
    Love from the dark continent.

    Hi, Naasir!
    Thank you for yet another great video. I just wonder if you could make a video and give some advice for international students who want to break into IB. International students from all over the world will be really grateful if you could find some time for this!

    Can you get into investment banking if you dropped out to trade and are making a living of f the stock market? I didn't get great grades at uoft for comp science, but I have a deep passion for finance and investing and understand both technical and fundmental analysis.

    Currently an Engineer, final year but applying for summer internships and grad schemes.
    At a target uni; academics solid, held leadership positions, extracurriculars alright, won awards, have an engineering internship and spring week, just I just don’t have the ‘relevant’ experience :(
    This video was great, thanks again.

      I was in a similar position. I completed my undergraduate degree in 2017 in mechanical engineering.
      Joined an engineering graduate programme in 2018 due to bursary obligations. Applied to many investment banks in South Africa last year (2018), none gave me a second look even though I did exceptionally well in my undergraduate degree.
      This year (2019) I decided to pursue my master's degree (in engineering) part-time while still in my graduate programme. I also completed courses through Udemy in investment banking, advanced Microsoft excel and financial modelling, these were relatively affordable. I applied out to all the South African investment banks and even some international banks like Citi Bank. I got call backs (for interviews etc.) from all of them, was offered positions by two and now set to join an investment bank in a permanent graduate trainee analyst position.
      From my personal experience some investment banks are willing to allow engineers straight into finance roles to become Investment Bankers while other banks prefer engineers to work in investment banking but in support roles (i.e. risk, compliance, operations) first, gain experience and then move into finance roles once you prove yourself and maybe gain some sort of technical qualification (MBA, CFA etc.).
      My advice is that you need to dedicate the time and effort to show these organisations that you really want to break into investment banking by doing some online courses. Secondly, you need to be comfortable with maybe first going into a support role and later move into the investment banking department at the investment bank.
      I would honestly say since you're an engineer a support role might be a better option, it allows for a easier transition from engineering to the finance industry but also allows you the opportunity to decide whether you want to join the investment banking department or rather head in another direction inside the bank.

      Devesh Singh great work on making it bro. This summer I have been doing advanced Excel and Financial Modelling - where/how did you incorporate into the CV btw? I did a spring week for risk and it wasn’t my thing at all, would rather do Big4 and transfer than do support functions ever again hahaha

      @@garythewise3440 Thank you. It did require me to reformat my resume to include these courses. I went with the basic resume format i.e. short intro, personal info, work experience, education and additional info. I broke up my education section into formal qualifications (high school, under grad and post grad) and additional courses and training (courses I completed through my current employer and online courses). You should also make mention of these online courses in your cover letter. These organisations like to see that you are committed to a career in finance and aren't just making an uninformed decision regarding the career switch.
      I totally understand, it is really important to get into a role that you enjoy because it provides you with the career satisfaction to work hard and perform to a high standard.
      Lastly, if you have the time maybe look at taking the CFA Investment Foundations exam provided through the CFA Institute. It is now a free exam and all the study material is downloadable off the CFA Institute website. It was recommended to me by an exec that I interviewed with.

    Hey Nassir,
    I really enjoy watching your videos. I had a personal question to ask but I don’t mind sharing openly since it may apply to other candidates as well.
    For my past experiences, I have all the requirements of someone that does not require work experience (sports, VP of NHS, high achiever, internships etc) however, I lack the GPA requirement (above a 3.0 but not a 3.5+). I also have work experience (sales, etc), having 3 jobs I’ve worked under my belt, so I fall in a weird spot in my head.
    What would you think is the fitment of a candidate like me in LB?
    Thank you,
    -Rod

    Hi Naasir,
    I'm currently in the RAF in my last year. I'm doing a Business Management (accounting) degree through The Open University, I'm also doing an MBA in Leadership and Management. For my BA I'm on track for a 2:2 and merit in the MBA. Would my grades be good enough for an internship or could I go into IB without experience because of my leadership from been in the RAF for 22 years? Any information would be a great help.

    Does it depend on the university you go to? I can go to a metropolitan right now or Resit my A levels and go to a higher ranked uni like Aston or Manchester. What do you think?

    • @garythewise3440
      @garythewise3440 5 лет назад +2

      muzzyy Z Resit and go to a higher ranked uni 100%. Try to go to a target uni too: oxbridge, UCL, LSE, Imperial, Warwick etc

      @@garythewise3440 thanks appreciate that but what makes you say that? Do people not even bother recruiting from low rankers

    • @garythewise3440
      @garythewise3440 5 лет назад

      muzzyy Z when a recruiter opens a CV, the university name is the first thing they see, imagine you open two CVs and see:
      Electrical Engineering at UCL vs Economics and Finance at Aston. The recruiter will prefer the UCL one 9 times out of 10. It shows academic success and intelligence which is what the firm wants.

    • @garythewise3440
      @garythewise3440 5 лет назад

      muzzyy Z they recruit from low rankers but seldom.
      The people from low ranking universities have something “very unique” that differs them.
      I.e Finance internship experience already, scholarships, published books, successful entrepreneurs, ex pro sports players etc.
