I’m on the opposite side, where I’m actually impressed at Vivzie’s ability of designing top-hat/suit characters and still managing to make them all look unique in their own way 😂
Though I do agree the color choices of the backgrounds aren’t good enough; in Helluva Boss, it feels like the characters are melting into the background.

I see your point but brand logos are a bad comparison. A logo is an unmoving image, it doesn't matter how detailed it is because you can reuse it for everything but these characters need to be drawn, coloured and animated over and over again. They NEED to be simplified to a degree for practical reasons. Don't get me wrong, I love details too but I work in the animation industry myself and a lot of viv's characters tend to be overdesigned and I imagine downright nightmares for the animators. A lot of them have so many tiny details, that you wouldn't even notice if you took some of them away. Take beelzebub for example. She has so much going on in her face already, nobody would notice if you removed her freckles. But if other animated characters were missing a feature like that, you could immediatly tell that something is off because they were designed by more experienced creators that know the balance between too much and too little. For the record I'm not a hater, I really like the show but the criticisms about the unnecessary details are valid
If these people REALLY want to see bloated designs at it's worst. They really 'otta wade through the trenches for early 2000s emo/scene aesthetic art and the furry art (it's not all of them but I've seen it.)

Yeah but it makes them harder to animate. Pretty sure an important design rule when making an animated show is to make the characters easy to animate. Design details like stripes, points, and unnecessary patterns make it harder for the animators. You can have a good character design without needing to clutter everything together.
Like, I was able to understand when hazbin hotel was in it's pilot stage and in the comics, but it's a full show now. The only characters that seem like a mercy to animate are Charlie, carmilla and her daughters, and nifty, heck even helluva boss at least follows this design idea with literally three out of five of the main characters. If I was an animator on hazbin hotel and I had to animate a character like Valentino, husk, or even alastor I'd just quit on the spot. And if it was god forbid a character like asmodeus or Beelzebub I would just quit animating all together.

I don't really get why people are so nit-picky over stuff between someone's artstyle or character design choices whenever they themselves can't design much, and they just want to start drama by making Viv stand in the bad spotlight.

I don't really get why people can't get off Vivzie's shit with the nit-picky stuff that they want to complain about with her amazing works, it's mostly the people who don't understand what character design, show making, and "design" when it comes to original things is.
Yeah its really annoying. Why her? Is the show perfect? No. But nothing is. Why are some people just obsessed with what she makes?
Then again, all of these are usually coming off of Twitter (X). Might as well take em with a grain of salt at that point since most stuff from Twitter tends to be hypocritical/racist/any form of complaint towards something/someone. I mean, they literally canceled a *cat* because... well, WHO THE HELL KNOWS?!
For me it’s not the designs and such themselves, it’s she doesn’t take criticism when she needs to listen. Hazbin Hotel had some people who gave genuine criticism to the pilot. It was so overstimulating…and she didn’t listen. I understand making a show it hard, but if you’re going to have a huge team, you’ve all gotta be on the same page too.
The points made about silhouettes and color palettes are very much common rules in the industry, though.
@@littlemoth4956 I can see the argument about the color pallet. It is very same. But the characters all have very unique silhouettes. You can make an argument about color but there is no argument for the silhouettes.
I personally think the characters don't look same-y at all. Their silhouettes are very unique and the colour palette is nice, using the same few colours - red, black, white, and yellow - it makes it feel cohesive, not indistinct, like they belong together and are, y'know, from the same show?
It also makes it so that the characters that do diverge from that palette really stand out.
In addition, it lets them do some fun storytelling stuff with those colours. For example, Vox's cyan doesn't just show his connection to electricity and technology, It also shows us how connected the technology in Hell is to him, with all his products sporting a stripe of his signature colour.
They’re all supposed to be from hell, it makes sense that the designs use a lot of red! And I’d argue making so many different looking designs using a similar palette shows your skill in character design, When I was younger all my characters had the same silhouette and look and the main thing that differentiated them was the palette alone, but if you threw the same bucket of paint on Alastor and Angel Dust you won’t have any problem still in telling who’s who

Criticism is valid. Even though I disagree with the points made by the people mentioned in the video, one does not need to be a professional to give their opnion about something. The title of this video is pretty misinformative considering it's not drama. Its just a few people sharing their opnion.
People are free to criticize if they want. This makes me think of the argument that you can’t have on opinion on art unless you’re an artist. Which is silly in itself. You would never tell someone they can’t criticize a dish as being bad unless they’re a chef.
Are they being mean about it? Yes. But you can’t create something and put it out there and expect people not to share their opinions.

As someone who has taken classes where character silhouettes was a part of what I learned, hazbin is very strong in this aspect as you can easily name each and every character based on a silhouette, even cluttered together like in that bad faith post.
FRRR i managed to recognice moxxie from his legs alone in that tweet. honestly the only thing that person did is prove the opposite of their intended tweet😭. that the character silhouttes are so good theyre even recognizable even when in a huge clutter

1:54 Wow, when you smush a bunch of characters together so you can't see the defining part of their silhouettes, you can't tell them apart! Color me shocked.
Literally, it's just that the Foster characters are spaced out better. I can easily tell apart Ozzie, Tex, and Stolas because I can actually SEE their silhouettes. Also, I couldn't tell apart some of the Foster's characters around the bottom right corner either, because they're similarly smushed together. Does that then make those designs bad?
It really hurts your point if you have to present it like this.
Paimon, Tex, Andrealphus, and Moxxie are also quite easy to spot.

Rules of character design? Its art! Art has no rules and should not have rules because art is subjective!
there is some rules for character design if it's a show though, you gotta make sure that they're silhouette is recognizable, that they don't have the cursed same face syndrome, that they're not overcomplicated and easy to animate, etc. etc.
If you're doing art as a hobby, there are no rules. But if you're doing it for work, there are actual rules you have to follow.
@@Idontknowanymore-zl6vnwell Viv’s silhouettes are highly recognizable, there is definitely not same face syndrome, and while the designs are complex she does put certain aspects on a ‘test run’ to make sure the animators can actually do them.
For that last point: Bombproof, striker’s horse, had a lava lamp stomach and hair as a test for the same sort of rigging used on Beelzebub. Without that horse there would be no Beelzebub.
I mean there are rules tho, well more like guidelines not necessarily hard set rules. The main rule I would say is having consistency

Well I mean... Yes rules are meant to be broken, but you need to know rules to break them.
Art is subjective, but its also communication. And communication is subjective.
Really at the end of the day art is just an abstract way to communicate something or another.
If you dont follow some kind of rules in which to do that communication it will not be received by other people. Which makes it useless.
Show these people anything by Studio Ghibli (or any anime, really) and they'd go insane. Viv's art is basically the whole appeal of the show. At a time when so much of American animation appears to have a specific disdain for beauty and detailed design, Viv is doing the opposite. I love this. It's really striking how the modern hyper-corporatized "CalArts style" (e.g., Family Guy, Rick and Morty, "flat design") is a direct inversion of what Vivienne Medrano has been making, and it really shows.

Don't forget Big Mouth and South Park... very samey-samey, infinitely more so than HH or HB. I quite like some of the designs from big mouth and south park, but it stands to show people aren't putting their money where their mouth is. Vivz does a great job at making unique and distinguishable characters.

Viv design are amazing and very original,people complain about everything and yes they all are skinny exept 2-3 but in almost every cartoon most character has same shapes
I feel like people hear these rules about silhouettes and all that and take it as absolute gospel and not just like, a good rule of thumb. Designs aren't inherently bad just because they don't 100% follow some arbitrary rule, they're good advice but that doesn't make them absolute law.
It's not even recent that Vivzie's art is getting unfairly judged it's been like this since the Hazbin pilot, there's soo much bad faith criticism

The rings are all based on a separate color right? I realized this like yesterday so it make sense for character to have a theme based on the ring. Since the ring of pride is based on red the it makes sense for red to be a defining color of its inhabitants.
True, but the difference is that, unlike Helluva Boss, Hazbin Hotel is exclusively set in the Pride ring, with a whole host of colourful characters with wildly different personalities compared to the other rings. To have the entire show be one colour and have all the characters be one colour can make it hard to pull the eye, especially when the background is the very same red as the characters all of the time
The thing about the Helluva/Hazbin design criticisms is that they are so hyperbolic. Sorry guys but Vivzie having an insane obsession with making most of her characters skinny kings/queens or sum shit doesn't mean that their silhouettes are twins. It's not hard to tell Angel from Alastor or Ozzie from Stolas. If you have trouble deciphering long-ass-haired Ozzie with the top-hat-wearing Stolas cause they both have small waists then don't act like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse are top tier designs cause you can tell their silhouettes separately over a hair bow.

Also, Vivzi is actually really good with hiding easter eggs in the characters by all the little details. I've seen a video breakind down Belzebub's design and song and it's crazy. I love how much thought was put into it

It’s funny how whenever you see people “fix” vivziepop’s character designs they always look ugly and worse. Just look up most attempts at redesigning angel or Alastor and you’ll get my idea. Only one I liked of Alastor was the one that made him vaguely resemble Cab Calloway and have more pronounced deer features
The worst is when they "fix" the poc characters and basically create racist caricatures 1000× worse than what they accuse her of making. Everytime someone brings back "Alastor and Voodoo", I swear the hatedom artists get ever so closer to drawing Jim Crow fanart

It’s when it gets into “fixing territory” that bothers me. If it is genuinely bland, uninteresting designs, than fine. But Viv’s are anything but. You’re just being a jerk if you think her designs need to be “fixed” regardless of whether you like them or not.

Studying Graphic Design helped me learn so much, and the twit about Vivzie's characters not being recognizable is one if not the most lame ones, the "Hellaverse" characters got quite remarking design and characteristic that can help recognize them amongst many, and even associate with their respective shows, THAT is the IMAGE PREGNANCY as I learned in college, and her character's got quite a bunch of that.
(Sorry for any spelling mistakes, I don't know quite well how to translate some words from my language to english)
Her style is so distinctive and recognizable that I've actually had to stop myself from saying another artist's work looks like hers.

Honestly I feel like a lot of this is just so unnecessary especially since I feel like a lot of the character designs are perfectly fine they all look cool and unique.
At this point it just seems like people just want to hate viv Pop for no reason.

You know, while I believe the only problem with this is that some of the character designs are just too similar sometimes like having that smile on them but you know everyone’s art is different . I can at least say that I have seen designs that are worst in every way. Like their are some that are either bland, boring, all are just the same in so many ways, and most of all is their are some that are just creepy, like uncanny creepy.

@@cosmicspacething3474 Hey sorry, busy with things but what I just mean is that to me personally, I think that with the angels (specifically Adam and the exterminator) they act like they hate demons but their design have that demon like look to them. I mean they have the horns and the smile similar to Alastor and the tv guy. I mean I would have gone with a knight style because of the whole crusade thing the extermination thing gives off. What I am trying to say for this is that with that they give off less of a holy presence that would go with being the opposite of hell.
Vivzie is an artist and i admireher work. whoever thinks differenty they can just BEAT IT! its notlike anyone is making you watch the show.
I have a friend who is a character designer and for fucks sake, EVERY design is going to be different for DIFFERENT NEEDS. In the example, Fosters Home was targeted for kids. Hazbin is targeted for adults. I do like the details she puts in BUT it can get complicated what we're suppose to focus on. Example, Bee in Helluva Boss. Too over the top, I can't tell what she's suppose to be. That being said, if that's the case good! If that's the intention.
I will admit though for sure while the pilot is beautiful, it was detailed but that's what makes it stand out. While I do miss some of it in the season, at the same time, the backgrounds do push it out. There'd a chance season 2 can incorporate these elements back.
That being said, there are people who don't like Disney's Wish and yet we have people who like it. Whether you like it or not it's up to you. I'm a believer in criticism and pointing out what works and what doesn't. However, I don't believe in bitch fits.
To be fair, Viv did use Striker’s horse as a sort of test to make sure the rigging that was used for Bee’s hair and stomach was actually viable for the animators; which it was so they went with it.
Additionally, I think her being too over the top fits in with her party girl persona as from the moment you meet her you can tell this girl is ‘a lot’ and highly energetic.

Character design holds no rules or limits. You can’t force someone to draw chubby characters, let people draw what they’re comfortable with and if you don’t like it… just ignore it! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's so funny the ways people make fun of the artstyle. That one shorts creator Deejus called the characters "Underfell Papyrus nft's" which gave me a good laugh, and the faces one was also pretty funny.
The unfunny ones are the colors and complexity (which are kinda true), but most importantly the silhouettes one which was 100% biased and the person who made the post was in fact stupid. Main characters like Blitzo, Moxie, and Stolas from Helluva, along with Alastor, Vox, and Angel Dust among many (and I mean MANY) others have very recognizable silhouettes.
I love the person that said something along the lines of "It's hell, what do you expect their colors to be" which was just hilariously true to me. It is in fact hell, of course most of the characters are gonna have darker colors or red colors, but even then the character designs are easy to differentiate in different ways, like how they are all associated with something different, like Alastor being tall, with a golden smile, or lucifer being short and whiter that most of the characters. Each character has something to clearly differentiate their design from the others, even when seeing them all bunched closely together and from a farther distance. Especially characters like Vox, who introduce new colors to the palette like blue, which makes for some contradiction in the colors, or like how whenever Alastor uses his powers, he has more of a green glow, which is complimentary to his typical red color. I just really don't get what the drama is about the character designs, its simple really.
TLDR: the drama is stupid. Each character has unique designs
Everyone says they hate minimalism and how they want vibrancy, but everything more complicated than literally a blue blob is "too busy" and cringe
It is set in the pride ring, notable for being red. Not to mention that this is hell. Also, Hazbin Hotel is meant to be red, whilst helluva boss, where the characters aren't confined to a ring, shows off hell in all colors. So, everyone, good or bad: FUCK YOU! AHAAH!
That’s fine but even so there needs to be a balance. A show only in red with no further creative liberties hurts the eyes when in motion. I honestly used to love her work but this show really would have done better as a webcomic and would have made loads of money doing so honestly

Theres a reason webcomic artists try and get their stuff animated; They decide animated is a better medium for what they want to say. Also, i can't get over someone thinking WEBCOMICS is at all a profitable medium. Literally every webcomic maker is either working 2 or 3 jobs or lives like a hermit for years

I’ll be honest, the color choice in the show is very tiring. It all feels like the characters not only blend in the background, but also with each other.

Now, I definitely don't agree with dragging Viv's name through the mud for even the SMALLEST of smallest things. That's not cool, nor is it ever cool!
However, to an extent, I must agree that her style is flawed - Not objectively, mind you, this is my personal taste here, but I can say that I sorta see where some of these jokes are coming from. Hazbin and Helluva's designs DO tend to be complicated - Which isn't inherently a bad thing! It's just that there are few, very specific ways to do complicated designs, I think, thus leading to alot of them being hit or miss for me. For every good design (Sir Pentious) or amazing design (Asmodeus) there's one not so great (Husk) or one that's dumbfoundingly awful (Beelzebub.)
Character silhouette IS also an important thing. It's not an end-all-be-all, and I certainly agree that the Twitter post DID definitely cheat, but if you did look at all of the Hazbin and Helluva silhouettes side by side, WITHOUT being cluttered together, you'd notice a severe lack of body diversity - For Hazbin characters anyways, Helluva does a bit better of a job on that end. Regardless, body diversity is a pretty cool thing to have. Again, not an end-all-be-all, but it would certainly help make the universe feel a bit more real.
Yeah, I dunno. I've a passion for character design, so I just kinda wanted to speak my thoughts out into the open world, while hopefully coming off a bit more constructive.

I'd say I'm on the middle ground of it all! I really like Viv's style for being so unique and different from traditional character design and I gotta appreciate all the details... However, I do agree that some characters are very same-y with either: The evil guy in suit and top hat and creepy smile or the furry character haha and I also wish the color had more variety than just RED but overall, it's HER style! One thing is giving constructive criticism and wanting her to improve, and another one is just flat out saying she's a bad artist!
Me personally, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the art style but I’m also in my “oh her? Yeah she’s going through every phase in existence with double mommy issues” phase. So I’m not sure what that says about this situation at all but I did love it before I went “weirdo” mode so I don’t think it has much to do with me needing therapy 😂

In a modern world where everyone draws literally the exact same style because they're too hung up on making "correct" art than making something uniquely their own, I rejoice when I see character designs like Viv's. It reminds me of in the 90s/2000s when there were so many unique/quirky cartoon styles. We really have forsaken our individuality for user friendly appeal and it's sad.

I personally find the designs in helluva and hazbin to be a little cluttered and somewhat hard to draw (though to be fair I haven’t tried to draw many characters for either show)
Issues with the character designs don’t take away from my personal enjoyment of the show so i’m not bothered but I still think they could be better.
I think it’s just Vivzie’s artstyle in general and not being used to drawing a certain character. In art, the more you draw one thing the better you get at drawing it. If I’m going to be honest, the first time I drew Angel Dust, that was not angel dust that was devil powder, not it actually looks like him :) so yeah, it’s just another process of getting used to drawing something that’s probably why you find their designs hard to draw

My thing is like, why does Vivziepop reply to this stuff?? I get how infuriating it can get for people to dog your hardwork, but your just giving them what they want, a reaction out of you, and just setting yourself up for more drama in the future bc now they know that it gets under your skin. Another thing that I feel like people don’t take into consideration is things like shape language and that certain parts of the design might represent things from biblical theology to how someone might’ve died, character designs are more than just silhouettes and their color-scheme

I get the background stuff but I've always loved Vivzies creative character designs. Her artstyle and animation style was also always very unique and eye-catching to me. The people who complain and nit-pick over these things shouldn't be given spotlight as it makes it seem like IT IS an issue to be talked about. People want Vivzie to look bad no matter what nowadays.
Honestly, I think every artstyle I see is cool, including Viziepop's.
As someone who’s studying character design. There is nothing inherently wrong with vivzie’s character designs except for potentially the color schemes. However the character silhouettes and shape language all read very well. When I look at each character, I can tell what kind of person they are. They may not be perfect, but I’m still a huge fan of the artstyle
I LOVE the details and use of so many patterns, make the show look LESS flat IMO. I have no issues with not differentiating the different shades of reds. The black & white and silhouette thing - I could easily differentiate the characters in Black & white & yes they definitely squished the characters together more then the fosters one smdh that’s an insult on peoples intelligence thinking no one would see that big difference. You also can’t take a CHILDS CARTOON & compare it to a cartoon made for adults. Fosters look like kids drawings but cleaner & organized cause an adult pro drew them, Vivs style doesn’t look like neat doodle drawings & is mostly red because THEY’RE IN HELL. Let people enjoy shit stop overly nitpicking every little thing cause it’s not to your standards. Did you go to school for art & you’re mad cause Viv’s work that doesn’t flow with your paid education is becoming successful anyways? Grow up & just live life instead of draining it.

I'd easily be able to recognize Beelzebub, or _any_ Hellaverse character, but like I just said, if you showed me the silhouette of that other one, I'd think it's Nubert or Humphrey or something.

I like Vizi's art style. It's easy to replicate, has a nice red motif, and a fun and angsty air to it. When people redesign other's characters or stories to "improve them," it comes off so pretentious! 😣 Art is subjective, but don't be cruel to the artist if you don't like their work.
The reason people hate vizs work is because the show has gay people in it but they know they can’t just come out and say “I don’t like this show because it has gay people in it”

Even in that big blob they made, I can still recognise the five tallest characters from the silhouettes of their heads and upper bodies.
Yes, the designs are very complex and often use a limited shared palette, but that's not a problem. It creates variety while also linking the designs together.
When you see a character diverge from the standard "yellow, red, white, black" palette, it stands out and is used to emphasise something about the character. Like how Vox has a lot of blue to show his link to electricity and technology.
