In Windows 11, the sharing of folder and files is doing fine BUT sharing the printer is an error or cannot connect, can you show us the fix for this in Windows 11 printer sharing? Looking forward...
I have tried this method at least 30 times over the years in Windows 10 with just 2 PCs, and every time it doesn't work. I am unable to "see" the other PCs in "Network" from Explorer. 😠
Thank you for this! It took me 3-days of experimentation after 3 different episodes over several months to get everything working the way I wanted it on my LAN. I was finally successful (this was back in 2020), but WHY are there SO MANY seemingly redundant settings that have to be configured. I certainly understand the need for tight security, but I have to wonder why MS has made it SO complicated. For example, you select whether you want READ-ONLY or READ-WRITE, but then under permissions, you have to select FULL CONTROL, CHANGE or READ. And, you didn't even get into it, but in the Properties dialog there is a separate Security tab. Oh, yes. Now I remember, this is the spaghetti warehouse world of Windows. :-)
What if I don't want to share with "All users" i have specific sensitive data that i don't want my little ones gaining access to. Is there a way to designate a share of a specific library to only one specific device instead of making all users have accessed to it.
Is there a way to give full access between computers, like the old windows network use to be? So you can access everything on the computers, not just a handful of folders?
Thank you so much for this video tutorial! This was very useful for me when I was transferring data from my old PC to a new PC. Excellent tutorial! You're a lifesaver!
Use any file manager that supports network file browsing on your phone (in the same network) to browse your pc folders. You can even stream video files.
I used ES File Explorer for years and it worked great on my LAN. Then I went to install it on my new phone and it was gone from the Google Play Store. Turns out it was loaded with malware - took Google years to catch it. Fortunately (Brian), I have password protected file sharing enabled on all computers. So now I use Asus File Manager that came with the phone. It can read file from the LAN, but not write. Can Material Files read and write?
You make things look so easy. I've asked other people how to do this and they've told me it can't be done! So I use things like Google Drive and Dropbox instead. I want to try this. Will my internet service get messed up? They provide my router/network...
I like your video. I got all the way through and everything looked good. When I try to connect it wants me to enter Network credentials (even those I unchecked that requirement) and it won't take my Microsoft login credentials or a login to my wifi. What should I do? Thanks.
On the computer from which you want to share files, you need to go to the Control Panel, and there go to Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change advanced sharing settings. Once you've done that, then look for the "All networks" category, select "Disable password-protected sharing" and click "save changes."
Hi Brian, Dumb question time. I have set up a few folders as shared, and I have lost track of the ones shared. How do I ensure ALL folders are no longer shared and I will start again...TIA. Using Windows 10 on home PC and several laptops, as well as iPad Air5.....
Many thanks. Please could you now add a Linux device to the same network and produce a new video showing how the exact same functionality of file sharing and disk mapping can be achieved across Windows/Linux. I appreciate different distros use different file managers so you I'm guessing you may have to cover the subject in theory only?
I apologize for what could be a silly question...But if I set this up for my computers at work and also get this set up on my laptop can I still access the shared folders when I'm at home?
Thanks Brian. My PC network is named after the "Rocky franchise series of movies," i.e., Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky III, and so on. Before that, I was using the "Ocean's Series of Movies" as my network name.
can you make a private LAN and onlyONE of the multiple PCS in that LAN have a direct connection to the internet via a separate NIC. while all the others are separate LANed privately. and can only one machine thats dual NIC mediate network traffice between the two networks?
I only do the advance sharing (it auto enables the other) ... you can also leave passwords on in case PC2 needs access but not PC3, so you give the password to 2 and not 3 ... etc. I don't like mapping shares, cause if say PC2 is off and you hover/move the mouse over that mapped drive, the whole PC freeze as it trying to access that share that's currently off ... same thing happens with pinned shortcuts under quick-access that's linked to other network attached locations that's off.
I;'ve done this before, i just went to network and the computer on the LAN showed up. I j just did a login and password to get in , But I notice that only certain folders where accessible. probably because as you shown here that they had :share " access
Problem, I heeded to install a new HD, my ssd craped out. I installed a new 2tb HD, have win 8, with key, and win 10, no key but is was installed in another system, both are thumb drives. My problem is how to do a new install?
Microsoft doesn't want you sharing files between your computers, they want you to put everything in the cloud and copy it from there. that's why they break file sharing in every new version.
What if I turn on password protection in sharing for security purpose? Won't it show in network? What are the differences if I turn on password security?
You can turn it on (I do) ... the people/PC's that need access just needs to know that password so they can access the files you want them to access. ... they will need YOUR pc username and password. 👍
My PC1 upstairs is connected to a wifi extender and the private network name is different from my laptop2 downstairs private network name. Will this still work?
Brian - Great video! Thank you for making it. I have a NAS connected to my desktop computer, which is in turn, connected by a wired connection, to my router/access point. I want to setup sharing with my wife’s laptop, that can only connect wirelessly by wi-if to our network. If I follow your instructions, will I still have access to my NAS, as well as her laptop, and will she have access to my desktop? Will there be any issues for either computer in connecting to the internet, or will I have to go into the network properties and select the ‘public’ network? It is a lot of questions, but I really need to find the answers before making changes, especially as my wife in not as technically literate as I. Thank you again.
I have two laptops (different names), connected via a USB switch connected to a 7-connection hub, which in turn is connected to two external USB drives, plus printer and other bits. This has been working. I don't want both laptops to see the drives at the same time, to prevent applications on both machines accessing the drives at the same time. But I have experienced unexpected delays when video processing. Following your video, I have set both laptops to - right-click on both drives in turn - give access to - advanced sharing (x2) - OK - on both laptops in turn. The drives have identical letters on both laptops. Both laptops kept separate Recycle Bins on both drives. Hopefully, with drives shared, the Recycle Bin will be shared. -- My Ethernet network was changed back to 'Private' after a boarder changed it to 'Public' for his VPN network gaining access to my system.
It's also interesting to note that internal &/or external drives that are formatted as exFAT or FAT32 *cannot* be shared in Windows as they do not have security, like NTFS does.
i am trying to share my usb drive but share option is greyed out for me. I can't change the settings for share. I am using windows 11. any suggestions??
You fly around so fast its IMPOSSIBLE to follow along , ESPECIALLY as there are SO _MANY_ versions of Win-10 AND win-11 AND win-7 & 8 to TRY and figure this OUT with . I _SIMPLY_ want to connect one computer to another , on my home network . I do NOT need fancy "do it all" , JUST a STEP-BY-STEP of what I CAME for .
Okay what the hell? Like I did all this and I can’t actually move the file to my NEW pc to keep the files. It just stays on the old pc. Can’t even copy it
What is sw share? I am getting a bit paranoid that there’s nothing about this anywhere. It’s not just because I can’t find anything about it, it’s because those are the initials of my evil foster parent.
Why use sharing without password? Few years ago in my office one pc get infected with ransomware and malware spreads to all shared folders on others pcs.
Do you use this method to share files, folders and drives? let me know below.
Not telling you.
I do but my shared files for the network are on a NAS

now how do you get it to work with computers attached to deferent routers that are connected? I.E. computer>routerrouter
I went looking for a few videos on the exact same thing, but none of them mentioned to change the Wi-fi network to private. Thanks a lot!
By far the most precise instructions on whole of RUclips!

Finally this works. I tried this multiple times in the past to transfer files but it never worked. This is so much easier than a USB stick lol
wow finally someone who actually knows how to do this thanks a lot
You're welcome
I just got to say, this is the best computer and tech channel I have found on RUclips!
Thank you very much. Have always wondered how to do this, and no one has explained it clearly and so simply.
Thank you for getting rid of the headache of my day ;)
Thanks so much for looking into this! Appreciate it!
Any time!
Thank you for your video. PC-PC file sharing seems easy to setup but how can one do a similar setup/access between PC-MAC and vise-versa?
What if I don't want to share with "All users" i have specific sensitive data that i don't want my little ones gaining access to. Is there a way to designate a share of a specific library to only one specific device instead of making all users have accessed to it.
Thank You So Much! This is the most helpful video about private network set up and the steps are made so clear and easy to follow.
Brilliant tutorial. Is there any way that I can selectively share to one pc instead of everyone if I have several pc connected to the workgroup?
Is there a way to give full access between computers, like the old windows network use to be? So you can access everything on the computers, not just a handful of folders?
This Rooster 🐓 makes computing easy, Thanks Brian.
Superb presentation. Yes I use it with my NAS.
Excellent!
Big thank you bro, made my life easier 👍👍
treesize was seriously gamechanger thank you
Thank You bro, thank you so so much! U don't know how much u helped me.. U are the best!!
so this is how we do it also in previous versions of windows? U said something about printers in the end. Can u share a printer in this way?
You’re the best!!! This worked perfectly for me

does this work if one PC is running on windows 11 and the other on windows 10 ?

This sadly did not work for me. It keeps asking for credentials.
Same

In the Credentials write your second device name and under the Microsoft account password. After that should work
Just worked for me. It may not like the folder you are trying to access. Try moving your files to another folder and try again.
