Yes, I confess that I quoted Blumenthal more as authority... I agree with you. There is much more Bach than Piazzolla here, and the Master self doesn't pretend to play tango, but rather some tango's suggestions!

Y Baremboim no toca jazz, pero lo quiere muchissimo y sabe improvisar de una manera que daré sorpresa a muchos..., como el quiere tango y a veces toca algunos titulos por su placer
Claro que no lo toca con una yumba de pugliese pero son musicos tremendos, los dos entonces hay que lipiar nuestras lenguas y...escuchar lo que nos dicen : amor !

hay mas tango (y prokoviev y shostakovich) que bach adentro de ese numero compañeros, pero ño, es que fred hersch pretende componer Un tango argentino ? claro que nooooo, el intitulo su numero asi por homenaje a una forma, un estilo musical que le mueve el corazon, entonces, che, hay que parar la porteñada y aplauso por ese maestro por su numero en su-mismo que es un humilde (si lo conocia...) homenaje a tu cultura, a tu pueblo y a la belleza de Baires y toda Argentina.

This is wonderful, no doubt about it, but my dear Bob Blumenthal: This is not tango.
I'm a Tango player from argentina. Yes, the phrases are Tangolike, but not the phrasing, and it's definitely not tango language. It's like saying Baremboim can play jazz.
Anyway, this is an excellent piece, and I'm in love with Hersch. I'll wirte an arrangement for my tango Quintet of this piece.

Whatever the title, I hear a kind of nostalgia close to the soul of tango .It is not a TANGO but a reminiscence piece
What's in a name ...., if you listen carefully you hear a kind of a subtill beat , there is an expressionistic nostalgic ambiance....... it is not folklorist for sure , neither were Kagel or Ginastera.....
