    It really sucks that you can't shoot .22lr out of a .22 mag bolt gun. It would be really cool if you could switch back and forth.

    Ive got an old Ruger Over Under handed down from my grandfather with the .22 magnum top and a 20 Gauge below, hell of an all use gun.

    Perfect Survival Rifle... almost. You said that about the 10/22 Takedown too, almost perfect. My idea of the Perfect Survival Rifle? Combine them. Build the Ruger American 22 Mag Takedown. Now that would be perfect.

    I could see combining this rifle with my Ruger Single Six with the magnum cylinder in place, I bought that revolver in 1977 and it's as good as the day that I got it. But then, I own several Rugers and all are just simply a lot of reliable bangs for the bucks. Good review Sir! Thanks! And speaking of the 22 mag handgun, Gold Dot has come out with what is called the 22mag Short Barreled Personal Protection round. Just got my hands on a box...most interesting.

    I am not one for bolt action rifles of the 22lr variety, I'm more partial to the tactical type, but there is something way cool about this Ruger. It does look like a lot of rifle for the money and being able to use a bx-25 mag with it seems pretty awesome. Never cared for the 10/22, but this Ruger American Rifle looks like something I've gotta get. Thanks Nutnfancy for the review!

    Thanks, I risked the ire of the love of my life thanks to this video. After convincing her of the need for and ultimately the purchase of a 9mm Shield for Christmas, I stumble on this video. Now I am also the proud owner of a Ruger American .22 mag. I went with the 22 inch barrel. The weapon just felt more balanced to me.

  • @SavageShooter93
    @SavageShooter93 10 лет назад +3

    I love the 22wmr, Its a fantasic cartridge. Ive got a Savage 93 and that thing shoots 5rd sub half inch groups at 50yds, ive got quite a few groups that were just over .3" at 100 its a 2moa gun and it seems to keep that standard all the way to 300yds, I can tag a 8" steel gong with almost monotonous reliability. now if the wind is gusting and shifting direction it makes it more difficult but you can still hit it 70-80% of the time, obviously wind complicates things but its still very accurate if your ability to read the wind is as well.
    I was crunching some numbers on Sierra I6 and most 40gr 22wmr loads have more than double the energy at 100ys than even high velocity 40gr round out of a 22lr, and the 22wmr has more energy at 300yds than a 22lr does at 200, not alot but it shows how much more capable that round is.
    Now with that 45gr hornady stuff it may deliver even more.
    federal makes 50gr gamepoint loads that are still carrying 100ftlbs at 250yds. thats what most 22lr have at 50yds.
    According to my brother in laws brother (no idea what that makes him to me) who is a fish and game warden in eastern Washington most of the deer they find that have been shot have 22lr in them , A few are shot by legal hunters who were to lazy to track them.
    poachers use the 22lr becuase its quiet and they can kill deer that are just off the side of a road easily with that round, and they either just get wouned because of bad shot placement and run off to die, or if they get hit in the vitals they drop, but the poachers either dont want the deer or they got spooked by something so they dont retrive it.
    So if alot of deer (bucks included) are killed with well placed 22lr shots that are only carrying 100 ft lbs at 50 yds, imagine what the 22wmr is capable of, when it carries that amount of force out to 200yds. On a side note the 17hmr carries 100ftlbs to about 120. And all of the rounds in that program from 6 different manufacturers all show that the 17hmr has less than 50ftlbs at 300yds interestingly enough the avg 40gr 22lr has just over 50ftlbs at 300 yds

    I've got it in 22LR, love it a lot. My only complaint is it didn't have the scope bases that were supposed to be with it, after 3 attempts during their business hours after the support site gave me a customer service number, never were able to get ahold of them with it. I kinda wished I got the threaded barrel version, but its pretty good out of the box. Love the fact I can interchange my 10/22 mags with it.

    Excellent plinker. If I'm in a bush plane, or deep in the bush where weight mattered, I would go for the Kel Tec SU-16C in .223. It's 4.7 pounds, semi-auto, has an under-folding stock (can still be fired with stock folded under, and can take down most any game, and even a bear with a few well placed shots!

    My only problem with the .22 magnum is that the ammo is so damn hard to find! I've looked online! I've gone to all the stores in my area! I can't find it anywhere and its what I was going to get myself for my birthday but I had to settle on a .17 hmr.

  • @8digitPDX
    @8digitPDX 10 лет назад +6

    Traditionally, for those survival/forage rifles, the better options for versatility and capability are the over/under rifle/shotgun combos. Savage and Springfield Armory are pretty much the only games in town on that unless you get stuff where you switch barrels to switch calibers. The idea though of a single rimfire primary shot, then shotgun as a backup shot. 12g or even 20g slug solves the bear problem. Buckshot is decent for the charging boar problem.

  • @mixflip
    @mixflip 10 лет назад +11

    I think a good survival rifle is one that can shoot multiple calibers like the Chiappa survival rifle that has a dedicated 22lr barrel and a dedicated 12 gauge barrel which can take caliber adapters. Maybe not as accurate but way more versatile.

    • @tacticalbutler7710
      @tacticalbutler7710 10 лет назад +5

      Mixflip, you're describing an apocalypse rifle, not a survival rifle. And this myth that you'll just randomly find ammo in a survival situation is pretty wishful thinking.

    • @mixflip
      @mixflip 10 лет назад +2

      Tactical Butler we can agree to disagree i guess. A survival rifle can put rabbits and birds on the table as well as use what ever ammo you might have on hand.
      I never said you will randomly find ammo in the wild like easter eggs. But if you have to bug out due to an emergency it would be nice to have "options" on top of the 2 bricks of 22lr you bug out with. After all bugging out is usually to "survive".
      I have nothing against a bolt action 22lr rifle. Its kids big and bulky for a survival rifle but hey its better than no rifle.
      But if we are going to use the words "survival" then id like to have options vs no options. Im sure you disagree and thats fine. Your way is correct for you and my way is correct for me. Its all good.

    • @mixflip
      @mixflip 10 лет назад

    I'm finding it easier to get my hands on .22 Mag than .22lr anymore. People are stock piling .22lr to the point that suppliers can't keep up. My local Walmart stopped selling most .22lr, just because they don't want to deal with the demand that they can't fully supply. I have three or four sporting goods stores within an hour of me, one of which had .22lr, and two had CCI .22 magnum. Never thought I'd see the day where .22 magnum is more readily available than .22lr. Maybe now, it'll get the attention it deserves. It's no round to laugh at.

    Hey Nutn, often times when you are talking about survival rifles, you bring up compactness for Bush Pilots and people flying Piper Cubs and the like. I am a 19 year old private pilot without a whole lot of knowledge, and I was wondering if you have ever thought about making a pilot series for single engine or bush planes. I understand the audience may be limited, but it would help out guys like me a lot. Thanks!

  • @RVM451
    @RVM451 9 лет назад +6

    You do know that you can get them with wood stocks? Then why buy the plastic stocked version?
    Define: "Survival". I agree that the .22 Magnum is more effective than the .22LR round per round. However once you're out of ammo the opportunities for resupply will be far more limited. I'm not saying that you're wrong. There is no right answer but it is something to consider.
    Also, so far as I know no one sells bulk .22 Magnum in 500 rd Bricks.
    Its like I used to really groove on the Ruger Blackhawk in .30 M1 Carbine for small to medium sized game up to deer in a bona fide emergency.
    Then a fellow over on the Scout Rifle Forum pointed out that I could use a .357 Magnum with 110 grain bullets for anything the Handloaded Carbine hollow points would do and have the potential to handle more powerful loads. He didn't add that you can get a Blackhawk Convertible and use any scrounged 9mm cartridges as well-but it's true.
    Come to think of it, If I was going to use the .357 Blackhawk convertible mainly to shoot game that I would have shot with a .30 Blackhawk, I'd load some good 110 grain semi-wadcutters and 110 grain hollow points into 9mm brass-save a bit of powder and bulk…
    Just Remember:
    Wood is GOOD. Plastic is SPASTIC.

      +Gene3067 Yeah, I know that many shooters don't agree, but I believe that synthetic stocks and pistol grips are just WRONG on a Fundamental Level regardless of any pragmatic advantages they might offer. Read Bill Holmes' comments about Nylon or other Synthetic stocks in "Home Workshop Prototype Firearms".

    "Ruger American .22 Mag: Perfect Survival Rifle?"
    No, and here's my professional reasoning as to why not;
    It's big, it's heavy, it's awkward, it's scoped, it's .22 LR.
    If you're in the woods trying to survive and anything larger than bambi charges you, this gun will not kill it fast enough, an elk, moose, tiger, wolf, bear, or even a human would keep charging you after you shot it, only angrier.
    If you're going inna woods, grab something like an SKS.

    • @Nefarious79
      @Nefarious79 10 лет назад +49

      What? An SKS is big, heavy, awkward, not easily scoped and was designed for minute of man accuracy not MOA accuracy.
      This is rifle is around 5lbs, the ammo doesn't weigh a ton and still has a magazine. For survival rifle purposes youre looking at hunting small game as opposed to big game.
      Doesn't sound like you have much time in the woods if youre worried about being charged by an animal.

    • @Oldtimeypistolero
      @Oldtimeypistolero 10 лет назад +7

      In a survival situation you need versatility. An SKS isn't versatile - it's popular because it's cheap and reliable. Try putting meat on the table with it. .22 mag can kill rabbits and put down feral dogs.

    • @Oldtimeypistolero
      @Oldtimeypistolero 10 лет назад +4

      ***** In a survival situation you're not going to be just hunting deer. In fact you may not have a shot at a deer but will see smaller game

    • @ChaosBW
      @ChaosBW 10 лет назад

      Rob Taylor ".22 mag can kill rabbits and put down feral dogs." I'll remember that next time I want to eat dog and have to kill 100 rabbits to make 1 meal.
      You people make me sick.
      ***** SKS is heavy but it is a very comfortable gun, and there are polymer cased models, though I think that ruins the classic look and feel.

    Interesting thing about the difference between .22 LR and .22 WMR is that the WMR, though more powerful, is less accurate, at least in weapons that were designed around .22LR and were then subsequently offered in WMR.

    You'd be surprised what a 33gr V-max bullet (.22WMR) can do out of a 22 inch barrel...

    I went with .223 for the same POU as you say. Don't get me wrong there are down sides to choosing the .223 over the .22 mag. But the .223 Ruger American Ranch just fits in to my personal parameters better.

    Great rifle for sure..... But survival? What are you trying to survive? End of days type things?

      holdengr This is for something like "my truck broke down and I'm in the mountains," or "my small, propeller-driven aircraft crashed." This isn't a WROL gun, or a SHTF solution, it's a wilderness subsistence tool.

    Love my 1992-era Marflin 883ss in .22 WMR. Now if we can just get the ammo back in stock at decent prices.

    Hey nutnfancy i have been in the market for a good scout/every thing gun. what would you recommend a Steyr scout elite or a rugger gun site scout?

  • @TR5T

    In a WORL situ, which is the ultimate survival event a .22 mag will be rendered useless due to lack of ammo. Unless you have stocked up plenty, carry plenty you'll be left wanting. Wisdom will tell you that .223/5.56, 9mm, .308/7.62X51 will be what to go with.

    I have to admit Nutn, I missed the 22 Mag part and I was just kind of thinking "WHY would you use a bolt gun like that for a 22LR cartridge when there are SO many breakdowns that are better for SWC IMO... but then I realized it was a 22MAG.
    I REALLY Wish there were more cool/"desirable to me" rifles chambered in 22WMR or 22 Hornet. I might just buy a Henry lever action 22WMR(or maybe a .357 version just to give me more capability here in the NW) and see if I can't get a composite stock for it somewhere (or make one) and give it a "Tacticool make over" (2nd kind of cool in the build direction but...) I think it'd make a good little cross-country trekker.

    On another U tube I have been arguing the merits and demerits of the .22 mag against the 17. I own a CZ .22 MAG ,24" barrel fitted with a X8 scope. Shooting CCI 30gn high velocity hollow point ammo, this baby is accurate, hard hitting and deadly against small game and varmints. Whilst I appreciate the 17, in my opinion, it is not as accurate in a X wind and does not have quite the destructive power of a .22 mag hollow point. Also, the shattering effect of the 17 ruins the prey for the pot. I emphasize MAGNUM. .22LR is not in the same league in terms of velocity and hitting power. I freely admit I'm biased. I love my CZ .22 Magnum.

    What about say a 10/22 take down? Cant think of any disadvantage other then screwed up dopes but do you really need glass on it

    I'd probably buy a CZ 455 American in 22 Mag over the Ruger. Easy enough to replace the nice stock with a Laminate if you want it for brush hunting.

    Here's the basic survival facts...for ultimate survival,3 weapons will get any job done...the 22 repeater "mag" the 12 guage pump and the 38 revolver will handle any situation...of course a good survival knife,paracord ,30 feet and hopefully plenty of matches...bugout bag and lots of clean sox

    one video per hour, for the last three - can you keep this pace up? Thanks for the vid - as an Australian, the ones like this are the ones that are more relevant personnally.

      Adam Nadeau Hmmm, I have no desire to begin an argument, but I will state that I disagree with you on the quality of our PM (for all manner of reasons). Aside from that, no, Gun control is not on the agenda - it is one of those issues that manages to avoid party lines - our current PM is Liberal - the closest thing Australia has to the American Republican Party, yet it was the previous Liberal Party PM John Howard that instigated gun control after the Port Arthur Massacre - and the Labor Party (Equiv Democrat) support this too.

    • @doemacmonkey
      @doemacmonkey 10 лет назад

      Yes, in Australia, the Liberal Party is the conservative group, the Labor Party is the semi-liberal group - with the Greens as the far left, if that makes sense...

    • @doemacmonkey
      @doemacmonkey 10 лет назад

      To clarify, the Liberal Party has a support base of small to big business, and the Labor Party grew out of the Union movement, worker support

    a ruger 77/357 would make great survival rifle as well at least from a standpoint of defense in the wilderness however if you shoot a squirrel with a 357 there wouldnt be much left
