It feels like we did this review not so long ago... because we did.
We reviewed the Ruger american Gen 2 in .308 Winchester a few months ago. not the caliber I wanted as all the rifles we review are in 6.5 Creedmoor and based off the gen 1 the Gen2 should have been very accurate. Unfortunately that was not the case. I for one have been convinced for some time that 6.5 is inherently more accurate and delivers better accuracy than .308 winchester so when i got the change to get another RTuger american Gen2 in 6.5 I took the opportunity. and the results that I found furthered my conviction that some calibers have a better chance at being more accurate. not that .308 winchester is not accurate but the % of different amunition that grouped well significantly increased with the 6.5 creedmoor.
here is our full review on the Ruger american Gen2 in .308 winchester:
• Ruger American Gen2 Re...
In this video we review the Ruger American Gen2 one of the most hyped popular rifles of 2024, esthetically this definitely takes home the beauty pageant. But how does it perform? Mediocre, yeah very mediocre.
As a quick comparison from the Gen1 to this Gen2. the Gen1 was an excellent rifle, many would say it didn't need a revision and now for 100 of your currency more than the gen1 you get the Gen2 in all its glory. what does that mean?
the main differences are:
-Spiral fluted barrel (as opposed to medium profile)
-Cold hammer forged as opposed to button rifled
-Radial muzzle brake (as opposed to none)
-Cera-coated action, barrel and muzzle break as opposed to a blued action (ill have to double check that one)
-stock now has replaceable comb height, and changeable length of pull
-texturing on the stock
Ruger clearly invested big on these changes and its definitely worth the extra cost.

.308 Win is a very accurate cartridge and it is arguably the parent cartridge of the 6.5CM. We all know that another rifle of the exact same model might shoot quite differently with the same ammo. I don't think it's fair to assume that one cartridge is more accurate than another... but it's fair to assume that the shooter may be more accurate with one cartridge based on recoil sensitivity or just plain bias.
Great job! Hopefully you can do a RA 22 ARC video soon 🙂
A .006" difference of your best groups between two calibers in my opinion isn't definitive proof that the 6.5 is superior to the .308. A .006" spread could be the difference you'd see day to day, or you could just call it favoritism or recoil sensitivity. But I call it click bait.
Hey Robo Dabo, yeah forbthe best group it's not particularly indicative. But for the groups in general you have a better chance of finding a compatible ammo with the 6.5 than the .308.
From the perspective of a shooter who buys a new gun would you rather have to buy 10 different boxes to find one that shoots 0.5" or would you preffer build 5? That's more what I'm saying.
Also its 60 thou, not 6 thou?
@@EpikArmsto be fair I have 2 tikkas, one 6.5 and 1 308. My 6.5 has an edge with handloads but the 308 ate all the factory I fed it and was about 3/4 moa with everything and no point of impact shift from 150gr to 180gr in 8 different loads. The 6.5 stomps the 308 past 800m tho. Long story short, buy a tikka.
@@dantep5570 This is a budget rifle. Also can't take someone seriously, that cannot spell though, correctly.
@@yourface3154The rifle in question is in the same price range as most tikkas making them comparable. As far as spelling goes, my "incorrect spelling" is to save time typing on my phone. Congrats on being a prude though.
Ruger comes out with several firearms that I would LOVE to own. Purchased a GP-100 stainless 357 mag shortly after intro and it was a great way to initially introduce myself to Ruger. New American gen ll bolt gun looks good enough to buy, not rich so had to sell my GP-100 to upgrade to a 44 mag S&W model 629. 😢
Glad to have a Canadian youtuber introducing rifles. Just plan to purchase a rifle and can't wait for your next video. Could you also talk about the new Savage 110 Trail Hunter?
@@jimzhang2562 haven't put the groups through it yet. Just did the rem 700 adl
I think those difference are so little that not worth the argument special in hunting.
Also believe most the people own both calibers anyway..
I love your channel man! Keep up👍🏻
Do the browning x-bolt 2 speed bolt-action rifle next.
I’ve been your channel subscriber for more than a year, I really enjoy your contents. As a fan of your channel, why do not start the shooting competition content? Like 1000 meter shooting challenge with your channel subscribers. Like Canadian version. Anyhow I always enjoy your videos!!
That Winchester ammo proves why 3 shot groups are not proper accuracy testing. The 4th shot basically doubles the group size. If I shot 3 shot groups on most of my rifles with good ammo/hand loads I could get .50 moa on a consistent basis.
Hey Bmstyle, yes thats quite true. And a 3 shot group or even a 2 shot group can easily shot a incompatible ammo with a rifle. Although going for more than 3 can lead to barrel warming up and groups opening up. It's a bit of a catch 22
my new cva cascade long range hunter has an amazeing trigger, but its made by bergara so enough said
Having not seen your channel before, I have to ask: which way were your targets oriented? I ask because most of the rounds seem to be spread in one direction but I can't tell if it's windage/trigger discipline or cartridge/breathing discipline.
my tikka .308 with the norma whitetail 180gr factory ammo shoots cloverleaf groups @ 100meters, that is truly great ammo! same results in my tikka 3006 with the norma whitetail 180gr! did you use norma 180 gr in that ruger american?
Howa 1500?
Very God grups are around 1 inch. But i want under 1/3 Moa and its very very hard. Never got there i have sako 85 black bear fluted beral but 5 shoot under 1 Moa yes. But not under 1/2 Moa. Need to try hornady pouder. I go whit the 178gr eld x .whit 36 gr N130 pauder.
Therefore I am glad I bought 'brand X' :)
does the stock flex being essentially plastic, Which I would fill the stock where I could to stiffen it up
I do believe the 6.5 creedmoor with its tighter chamber design is more accurate overall. I don't think there is much question at this point. But I wish we would get to the point where rifle reviews would do more extended tests that were statistically significant. Just because you got a single sub moa group from a particular load is completely meaningless. The next group could be 2" for all we know. You really need 7-10 3 shot groups before you have enough data to know for sure. Each shot will end up randomly anywhere within the "cone of fire".
7 to 10 3 shot group sounds good but you do know what the price of 6.5 creedmoor and other ammo is right now ? when your doing 8 to 10 different types of ammo. do the math. your talking 30 rounds per brand. at 6 to 10 differnet brands. 300 rounds. @ say 60 dollars a box of 20. i know i cant afford that !
@@UltimateArms I hear you. Yeah, I know ammo is expensive for sure. So are rifles. These reviews help people pick their next rifle. Without the right data, though, they really have no idea how it really shoots. I wonder who the first reviewer to capitalize on this will be. See the hornady podcast "your groups are too small".
@@elkhuntr2816 i reviewed it. awhile back. good rifle for the price. and yes it shoots. for something that is going to be used say once a year for hunting, it does the job well
@@UltimateArms Where the hell are you paying $3 a round? My .308 was around $2 in the plandemic.
@@yourface3154 hornady precision hunter 143 in canada $62.00. nosler 140 match $67.95 a box of 20. most 308 is cheaper to buy then 6.5 creedmoor now adays!
Your not a very good shot. I'll stick to my 308
So would you drop this in a chasis / swap out the trigger, and run it in local competitions, or keep as personal fav. Gun?
@Trinitystillmyname personally no. This rifle in Canada is about 1000 and a chassis is about over 500-650 and the barrel is a bit on the skinny side. I'd recommend a bergara b14 hmr
Do you have a recommendation on a good hunting scope on your website?
@kodyseesequasis3777 I currently carry the Element Helix 2-16× it's a great versatile optic for hunting. That is the only one I carry for hunting
Under bergara b14...
Yes in my opinion
What are you aiming at with just that dash on the target?
@@pastorjosh44 correct
👍👍👍
If you're aiming for that line, you have some other problems...
If you are zeroed for the line, then shoot the line..... what do you aim at?
@@EpikArms The line, you dork.
First?
Guess there is always a first
WOW a statistical sample of ONE each! This dude is both stunningly ignorant and arrogant .
Relax bud, this is an example of one amongst other's that I've done. But since you likely think the contrary. Let's hear your data. How many .308 do you own vs 6.5's?
@@EpikArms It's ok man, I have a milpsec 18" .308 that is fairly on point, costs too much to shoot. Just bought a Ruger American Gen 2 .308, haven't sighted it in yet, costs too much to shoot. xD
