A .357 revolver can shoot .38 ammo, no need to change cylinders. A .38 can not shoot .357 as this cartridge is too long to fit in a .38 Elmer Keith was a smart guy
I have a highly similar revolver, also made from a S&W Model 10 by Clark Custom Combat in the 1970s, but with a slant compensator built into the barrel. It's original owner had a red dot sight put on it in the 1990s, which is quite a bit larger than those of today. Not much smaller than that scope. I got it used, and I just happened to have it with me one day in the shop when I was doing general gunsmithing. It's original owner came in, saw it, and recognized it! He wound up giving me all the factory paperwork for it and a company shirt! Still have it all. It will shoot a group of just over 2" from standing at 50 yards with a load it likes. Guns like this were once widely built by custom gunsmiths for PPC competition, which was very popular up into the '80s but has since died out. Now the guns are available for a fraction of their original cost. They always had very light and honed actions as well. Pure competition pieces, never intended for anything else. Still a lot of fun to shoot.
Those revolvers were made for the 148 grain HBWC .38 Special ammunition only. They would sell used for around $200 in the 90’s and 2000’s because the barrels were being worn out using jacketed bullets.
@@boostimalaka1 That's partially correct. Barrels on PPC guns were generally optimized for the wadcutter loads they used, but that's primarily a matter of forcing cone angle and depth. Jacketed bullets don't substantially accelerate wear at the low operating pressure of .38 Special. The PPC revolvers were, and generally still are, selling for much lower prices than they were created for because interest in the revolver declined substantially after the 1980s and the sport of PPC died out. Very few people have any interest in any kind of custom revolver anymore. I think the last time I did a custom revolver for someone was back in 2014. I don't remember the last time anyone brought me any kind of revolver job. Anyway, no need to worry about jacketed bullets in your revolvers. I shoot almost entirely cast and swaged lead bullets in mine, but only because of the much lower cost when handloading them. My particular Clark Custom Combat revolver seems to shoot both hollow base wadcutter and cast semiwadcutters about the same out to 50 yards. Haven't tried any further.
