John McEnroe is right in my opinion on his statement about Serena Williams if she played on the Men's ATP circuit / tour. Serena is arguably the greatest female tennis player ever but to compare her where she would rank on the Men's tour is just not fair. It's two completely different levels of tennis and she would not rank very high at all. That is not a disrespectful, anti-feminist or anti-equality statement. It's just a fact. Why did John McEnroe get so much heat for saying that? Serena even admits she wouldn't do well on the Men's tour.
All respect to McEnroe and Williams. People just need to leave them alone and stop trying to turn everything into a fight. - Спорт

Kudos to Serena for being honest. Graceful lady, and John McEnroe was and IS right.
It was on the line!! Mac is always right. Its just as hard to be the #1 ranked woman as it is for a man to be #1. Athletes are always improving getting faster and stronger to contend.
Yes that made me actually respect Serena even more.
Graceful lady, LOL. You obviously don’t know jack.
Love me some Serena!!!
Not totally right. Because it's not a different sport, but the same. As well be like this in swimming, Voleybol, Football, Basketball and whatever. Even in Cooking nowadays men are superior, since the "Modern woman" refuses to cook.
We live in a time when so many people just cannot handle the truth. They would rather live a lie because it "feels" good.
let's also say that men are as beautiful as women. Let's equalize the situation and obviously we felt good :))
yep.. men have created a world so easy that women think they're better than men..

Nah, trying to explain how ranking works to people who never watch tennis might get them in confusion but I honestly believed that Serena Williams was at least top 10 the greatest in the world before I even watch her matches, then everything make sense when she got her ass lit destroyed (no offense) against one dude ranked 203
Most people like fake people more than real people anyways so what’s the use.
Exactly. I'm starting to believe that's human beings' greatest problem - pride. They don't want to be humbled and hear the truth, they want to hear what makes them feel good.

Well, it’s not that important.
At that point it doesn’t really matter is she would be top100, top500 or top1000.
Most people could barely name the top20 in any sport… the bigger point is that barely anyone would know who Serena is if she would have to compete with the men.
But there are still many delusional people out there who think that no man could beat Serena or that the US womens soccer team would beat the US mens soccer team.😂
@@ramigilneas9274 This^^^^ she would probably be around 700, like McEnroe said. I trust his judgment more than mine. Even IF she were a little higher than 700, she would be well out of the "well-known" positions ie top 15-30.
I love when they asked him what he thought he’d be ranked. He answered around 1200. They weren’t ready for that kind of honesty
But he means now.
I seem to recall someone demanding an apology from McEnroe. He said: "No." Perfect response!!
Its the same clip this vid showed of him with the two female hosts and the male host.
Mcenroe is being bloody generous. A male pro is insanely good. I don't see her beating anyone inside top 1000. There are good male amateurs, ex pros who would beat her

@@redgiant970 she hadn’t peaked but was already on track to becoming a superstar dominating force for years to come. She was at the start of that superstar status.
Serena just earned my respect even though I don’t follow tennis anymore. She knows what she’s talking about
She lost to the rank 202 male player after he'd just finished a round of golf and had a couple of pints of lager. He even said he played like the rank 600/700 would play to keep it interesting to watch. The Williams sisters then went on to challenge only male players rank 350 or lower, after thier original claim to beat anyone below rank 200 failed miserably. They are yet to accept any challenges from males rank 350 or lower because they know they will lose.
Karsten Braasch, the #200ish guy who crushed both Venus and Serena, was also a chain-smoker.
I watched them play that match. It wasn’t close.
Didn't he actually drop to 500 a week or two after the match?
He beat Serena 6-1. And he was ranked 203.
He was ranked 203. Karssten Brasch. I'm sure I murdered the spelling his name, my apologies.
John has never held his tongue and thank God for that!
She said at some point she could win versus any men ranked 350+, because 205 at the time won 6/1 against her when she said the same thing about 200+, then proceeded to refuse any challenge.
@@indigetes yeah cuz there is a limit because men are built for more physically challenging things so at some point really good game sense and skill isn’t enough because that’s just how we have evolved
@@roshaniyengar3236 He's not talking about the physicality. He's talking about false claims. It's awesome that women are competing and winning at the highest levels of sport, but in many sports they're still not comparable in performance to men, so they shouldn't try to claim they are.
Any woman would struggle to return a weak 2nd serve from a man...whoever the last man is on the mens official rankings would beat Serena easy.
You CANNOT be SERIOUS
700 is pretty good. Flo-Jo is still the fastest women and holds the track and field record. Her time is 7090 (tied) compared to men's times. So the fastest woman ever is tied with the 7090th fastest man.

Only pussy PC cry about it
Totally agree. I grew up in the era of McEnroe, Conners, Lendl, Mats Wilander, Edberg, Pat Cash. That was some era of tennis. It has more great top players playing at the same time vs the last 15 yrs in which really on three have dominated.
I think whoever dominated their sport the most.
The better analogy would be obviously Mayweather is a better boxer than Frank Bruno but no one would expect Mayweather to be able to beat any heavyweight in a boxing match...at least not a top 20-30 ranked heavyweight if any.
So if we take in account weight then gender obviously matters. Serena has been more dominating in her gender division than any male in theirs. And if a black player threw the juvenile temper tantrums that McEnroe did you wouldn't be saying how wonderful he was.

@@USMC-cv5sd Maybe we should have weight divisions in tennis. Djokovic is 77 kg and there's no way he'd be able to beat John Isner at 111kg. Oh wait, maybe there aren't weight divisions in tennis because weight doesn't matter as much as boxing.
Serena gave her opinion on the subject too: "For me, men's tennis and women's tennis are completely, almost, two separate sports. If I were to play Andy Murray, I would lose 6-0, 6-0 in five to six minutes, maybe 10 minutes. No, it's true. It's a completely different sport. The men are a lot faster and they serve harder, they hit harder, it's just a different game. I love to play women's tennis. I only want to play girls, because I don't want to be embarrassed."

Yeah but other unqualified people have to make this an issue because they have nothing better to do

100-200 rank range is pretty outrageous. Do we not remember when that dude spent all day drinking and playing golf and still mopped the floor with the williams sister. And he was below rank 200.
203 lol
Good memory. That guy was ranked 203 when he beat Serena 6-1 and Venus 6-2, at the Aussie Open in 1998. He then stated he was playing so badly that he would probably be ranked about 350th on the ATP tour when the rankings came out in the next week.

He drank a couple beers the night before, he was not drunk when he played serena and venus
Are we talking about Karsten Braasch?
John's balls are still intact. He's still spitting facts and being real.

There are actually close to 2,000 spoken languages / dialects in the world

If you cannot beat the 700th ranked player at all you'll probably be ranked 1500 or worse.
I hate when reporters do this.
The simple fact that there is a men's and women's division in just about every sport is all the evidence you need.
Men and women could compete against each other in my favourite sport, cricket, but that's an exception.
@@ajs41 LOL, I used to play cricket, you're joking right?
@@CIMO13 No, it's common for girls who are very good at cricket to play in boy's teams. A lot of the current women's England cricket team played in boy's teams when they were growing up. In most team or individual sports women would easily loose to men, whether it is tennis, basketball, football (soccer) etc. I´m certain that if the US Women Soccer Team played against Argentina (both reining world champions) they would get embarrassed. It´s a fact, no one is downplaying women´s sports, it´s just ridiculous to expect women to be able to compete with men.

You said she will be ranked between 100 and 200? Thats unfortunately not true. It will be hard to win against well trained top 1.000 for serena or any ranked #1 in wta.
And its not just about height, its more about agility, endurance and strength.

What a BS, she wouldn´t even win against No. 7000 of mens ranking-list, if such a list would excist. McEnroe sayed this nonsense only, because he knew about all this feminismn-shit in TV. Please awake, Female and male-tennis are 2 compete different planets !

I'm a cricket fan and the interesting thing about cricket is that men and women can compete against each other in every aspect of the game except fast bowling. Everything else - batting, medium-pace bowling, spin bowling, fielding, wicketkeeping - they can compete with each other.
Mac and Serena were both right- both players, and not “cancel culture” robots...
exactly, people need to listen to the actual pros (John Mac and Serena), and stop listening the phonies in the media who only push their agendas.
I remember when McEnroe was asked the question where he thought the number one womans player would rank on the mens tour when he was ranked in the top 5 on tour, he answered the reporter with " I don't think the rankings go that high " smiled and walked away.
Except that time after that match a little while back where serena flipped out at the ref and used the race & sex cards inappropriately. That being said, I think she was just having a bad moment and heated emotions got the best of her.
I'm never hitting 'read more' ever after this one 🤞
I don't think Serena could beat the NCAA Men's Champion much less the one of the top 700 on the ATP...
I know this is off topic but does anyone else hear the SPACE TRIP vaporwave playlist in the background or am I going crazy? 🤔
There is always someone or that women on that show that had to ask John why do you say women and not the greatest player. John is absolutely right because mens sport in anything is so much harder and more hardcore than women's sport. Just look at Rugby, Soccer, AFL if you're in Australia, it doesn't come close to what men are able to do compared to women.
I'm glad he didn't back down. And I give Williams credit to point out the fact there's a difference to the capabilities in their respective divisions.
100% credit to Serena for being honest and telling it like it is. That's why I respect Serena.
She and her sister talked about how they could beat any man outside the top 50 the guy who no one remembers his name and ranked 203 crushed her 6-2 and Venus 6-1 after drinking 2 beers and smoking a half deck of cigarettes. Then they said they could beat anybody outside the top 250 she's been challenged and ducked since then. You are high if you think shed rank in the top 500
@@marvinkline5667 I actually give the Williams sisters credit for having the guts to do it. Most people would back down from a challenge or a risk. I have more respect for them as women that they actually tried and faced a male pro.
the start of the problem was actually the interviewer's assumption that Serena, because she is a woman, is automatically equal to a man on a tennis court and that there are no performance differences between the two sexes!
that is just ignorant and indicates the NPR interviewer knows little, or nothing, about tennis. oh, and then she is willing to arrogantly argue with JOHN MCENROE, one of the greatest to ever play the sport and who follows it daily, about the subject?
i think all this happened as the interviewer's ignorance/arrogance may have led her to question McEnroe's inclusion of 'female' in his statement, thinking that he was somehow being sexist. in actuality, though, she may be the one demeaning feminism by turning people off via her needlessly militant stance.
of course there are differences between men and women, although one sex should certainly NOT be seen in the aggregate as superior to another!
so, yeah, the interviewer was actually the problem and then ignorance/bullying of McEnroe by society actually amplified that stupidity, helped, no doubt, by McEnroe's reputation (pretty much left behind now) for being insensitive.
come to think of it, maybe the interviewer should learn a little about tennis before debating one of the greatest players ever regarding his conclusions on the subject? is that asking too much? is that at all unreasonable, i wonder?
or, if she doesn't want to do that, at least she can have the decency to apologize for her imputation that McEnroe was being sexist, as well as the arrogant presumption that she knows more than John McEnroe does about tennis?
i don't want to go overboard here... there is nothing wrong with asking a question, of course. some, though, are certainly more pointed than others! i'm guessing there was an ignorant agenda there...
if not, she has nothing to apologize for.
there may be a way to tell, though. how did she act afterwards towards McEnroe when this all blew up, i wonder? did she demonstrate integrity by recognizing McEnroe's honesty, his long history of respect towards Serena's game and other facts that would help people not jump to the wrong conclusion about what he said?
maybe.
i see no mention of that in this piece, though. and that doesn't surprise me as people, in general (no matter their sex), don't often display such integrity.
maybe we, the general public, will never know what her part in all this really was, then. she could be innocent and just intellectually, as well as morally, sloppy like so many of us are on so many occasions...
it, at the end of the day, isn't a very big deal, though - not for McEnroe who certainly is going along his merry way, nor (apparently) for Serena. the game of tennis is probably totally unharmed by it, too.
however, it should be said that unreasoning militant sexism, if that is what started this fiasco and fueled it, actually probably harms the feminist cause more than anything. it is a form of bullying and bullies don't typically make many friends, even of fair-minded people who otherwise could be potential allies...
so, come on, people!
we need to be better than this, don't we?
advocate for equality but do it in the right way. treat other people well, especially when they are not trying to cause you a problem,. that is just common sense...
nailed it on the head 100%!!!
Nice novel 👍
I didnt see the interview, but I think it's not an odd question if the NPR woman thinks that 'greatest' has another meaning than 'best'. In that sense McEnroe could've just answered 'because to be the greatest you have to be the best in the game'.
In other words, aren't you being too hard for the interviewer? :)
Simon Teeninga:
so, an NPR interviewer who is talking about the best tennis players all of a sudden needs to have 'greatest' defined by the interviewee? interesting. i think the more likely explanation is that you tend to put your head in the sand a lot.
The reporter is an idiot. And because she's an idiot John, like he will, served up some nasty, sarcastic, truth. He probably should have said 500?
100 to 200 range. No his guess at 700 is way more accurate :)

Did you know McEnroe along with Navratilova publicly tried to shame Margaret Court the great Australian female tennis player at the Australian Open tennis tournament because her religion didn't believe in same sex marriage. They paraded around the tournament with signs partitioning for the arena named after her to be re named, it was extremely disrespectful of them both. By the way Court holds the record number of Grand Slam women's singles titles, you know the one Serena can't equal or break but the msm still say Serena is the greatest ever?
