Cleveland has 8 gorillas; 5 adults (1 male, 4 females) and 3 youngsters (Jameela, Kunda and Kayembe). Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, N'neka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91, Tusa 12/2/89, and Jameela 1/5/24, Kunda 7/19/23, and Kayembe 10/26/21.

-In general, gorillas live 35 years in the wild. In captivity they get better food, medical care and have no predators. Life expectancy can range from 50-60 years.
GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your old cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). 80% of the world’s Coltan is mined in central Africa, which is wild gorilla habitat. Forests are being strip mined for this highly sought after mineral, with illegal mining even taking place in protected gorilla areas. BUT! Coltan is reusable! Clear out that old cell phone drawer! Our hope is, that the more and more electronic devices are recycled, this can slow demand for new Coltan to be mined in Africa.
Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.
Kayembe was the first zoo born gorilla at the Cleveland Zoo.
Kunda is the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
Jameela is the first baby gorilla born via c-section at the Fort Worth Zoo.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

Larry, these are always my favorite videos. It really captures how much love and devotion these keepers have for these exquisite animals. It also shows the trust the animals have with the keepers. Jameela is all about her bottle!!! So precious

And another fantastic video! Sweet Jameela who later almost falls asleep from drinking the bottle, just like a human baby 👶🏼. Kunda who doesn't seem to care much for the zookeeper and apparently has no appetite. Freddy who eats really neatly from the spoon, lips closed to get everything inside 😂, and tries to take the bean from Jameela 🤣. Sweet Tusa who tells Kayembe in real gorilla language to stop teasing. Kayembe who, as always, hardly sits still for a moment and Mokolo keeps a close eye on everything 👀. And they all behave exemplary during the judging (otherwise no tasty snack? 🤣) Always great to see that the troop is really focused on each other instead of on the visitors 🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🐒🐒🐒

Wonderful to see babies Kunda and Jameela, and toddler Kayembe doing well. The whole troop looks healthy. I'm happy Tusa has a gorilla family, but I feel she wishes to be alone.

Fantastic! I love seeing them having snacks and training time!👏🤩 My favourite part was how Kebi brought her own stool over to the fence. The keepers have stools, so why shouldn’t she?! 😄 I noticed last time also that Kunda really does not like that flaxseed porridge! Not even when it’s served on a lovely crispy green bean. Kayembe is a smart little fellow and has already learnt to open his mouth and show his belly to the keepers! 🤩 They are all amazing❣️

I don’t envy people, but I do those that take care of babies and animals, I get too emotionally attached. I love the training sessions. The babies are so adorable 🥰. I hope Kayembes quirky personality never changes. I truly adore him. I hope the keepers know we all appreciate them and love the gorillas so much. Thank you Larry!

Yes they do it every day. The times fluctuate just a little to keep the gorillas guessing.

Gatorade is to replace salts and electrolytes, Gatorade has almost no sugar count. He’s just being a 2.9 month old gorilla 🦍 and he’s more calm than many in other troops. Kunda and Jameela will be just as full of energy, Kunda’s almost there but Kebi keeps her under surveillance all the time. Soon Kunda will be strong and strong willed enough to just do as she pleases. It’s all part of growing up and being interested in their environment. It good to see how much the keeper’s take care of each individual’s health.

Jameela looked like she was drifting into a milk coma. She didn't seem too interested in solid food, but maybe she was just full after her bottle. Kayembe still has major FOMO. He has to look around to make sure no one else is getting something better. I love Tusa using her gorilla voice. It actually seemed to have more effect on Kayembe than the screaming. Mokolo is stepping up the discipline with Kayenbe, which is great. It was wonderful to see Kunda being allowed to get more than a few inches away from Kebi. Great video, as always. 😊❤

Why does Jameela have to be fed with a bottle? Kayembe doesn’t need liquid nutrition anymore.
I think … it follows the routine this zoo has established with raising its youngsters. First Kayembe then Kunda, offering supplemental feedings ensures baby is getting all the nutrition she needs, allows staff to interact closely with gorilla for wellness/health checks and teaches the baby/youngster this is how we do things and it’s a normal part of your day. They are unable to provide just flax seed and green beans because Jameela has not progressed to that diet yet.

**I’m aLL over the pLace** with my Comments today 😂😂 BUT I wonder whether or not the Keepers 👩⚕️ would consider SUBSTITUTING the Flaxseed porridge or perhaps ADDING to the Menu either Oatmeal or Cream O Wheat 🥣 Anyone would get completely BORED of the same ol’ Snack EVERY DAY. Similar to Humans, GORILLAS also need and DESERVE a bit of VARIETY in their food. Besides, We can see in the Video how Both baby JAM and KUNDA react to the Flaxseed 😂😂 as if it were Kryptonite 🤮

É sempre muito bom assistir um Zoo que se preocupa com o bem estar dos animais, e achei muito interessante a parte da medicina para os gorilas, pesquisas e tratamentos, fico muito contente, hoje foi um dia de importante, a tradora pode pesar Kunda, as fofuras Jameela, cada dia mais linda e esperta, Fred comendo de colher, o exame de Mokolo que eu acho que é feito para monitorar o coração, é o interessante é que de alguma forma ele entende que é para sua saúde, mas não gostei dos tapas que o Kayembe deu na Tusa, ele é uma criança abusada, infelizmente Mokolo não interferiu, se fosse Kebi ele não faria isso.

How many times a day do they supplement her with a bottle? Any idea? I wonder if she still nurses on Freddy also since she been eating, or atleast trying to eat, more greens and vegetation. Love hearing the natural sounds of the zoo versus a music overlay also. The videos keep getting better and better!
Jameela gets 3 bottles each day ( down from 4 previously). She still nurses from Fredrika.

Why are the gorillas spoon-fed?
How else would gain their trust ? Leaving food in a bowl or strewn across the yard won’t help make them trust you. They feed them as a reward during training.
