Cleveland has 8 gorillas; 5 adults (1 male, 4 females) and 3 youngsters (Jameela, Kunda and Kayembe)

-In general, gorillas live 35 years in the wild. In captivity they get better food, medical care and have no predators. Life expectancy can range from 50-60 years.
GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your old cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). 80% of the world’s Coltan is mined in central Africa, which is wild gorilla habitat. Forests are being strip mined for this highly sought after mineral, with illegal mining even taking place in protected gorilla areas. BUT! Coltan is reusable! Clear out that old cell phone drawer! Our hope is, that the more and more electronic devices are recycled, this can slow demand for new Coltan to be mined in Africa.
Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.
Kayembe was the first zoo born gorilla at the Cleveland Zoo.
Kunda is the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
Jameela is the first baby gorilla born via c-section at the Fort Worth Zoo.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

Absolutely loved this video. Love seeing Kayembe with his natural mother. Beautiful video❤️
Thank you
I am so happy to see my Kayembe with Mrs N’neka 😂❤❤❤❤❤ Those hugs from mom are everything to Kayembe❤❤❤❤❤
🤗
Ahh look an almost 14 minutes tribute to lovely moms and their lovely babies/toddlers what a treat😍🥰👏from sweet Jameela stomping on mom's food😍🤭to sweet Kunda who's attached to mom🥰to playfull boy Kayembe who shows he can also be sweet and in need of a mother's attention🥰❤️Great video Larry!👏👍🥰🌞🌻
Thank you
Jameela hair curl’s on her neck is adorable and sweet Kunda is growing so as well. Kayembe it seems like yesterday he was that tiny baby riding on Freddy’s back. Glad to see N’Neka enjoying holding Kay more to, they’ve always been best play buddies but she’s really trying to show him some comfort nowadays. The longer Kunda’s face gets you can see more and more that Kunda and Kay are half siblings, I think they’ve got Mokolo’s beautiful eyes. Freddy looking around always so alert and thinking, I wish I could hear about her thoughts. Such a grand alpha matriarch with tremendous wisdom and skill raising such wonderful healthy babies. They all looked relaxed today and I don’t know if Tusa’s little romance with Mokolo is over for now but I wonder her health and status regarding if she’s allowed to get pregnant. I know the Gorilla SSP and the AZA handle these decisions. Great Content As Always Larry. Thanks 🙏🏼♥️🦍♥️🙏🏼
👍😁
Couldn’t have said it better. 🌻🌼💛
Honestly, You'd be hard pressed to drag me away from the gorillas if I was to visit their zoo. I am absolutely enthralled by each and every one of them. All the babies are so cute, the mommies are incredible but the relationship between N'neka and Kayembe is so endearing and holds a special place in my heart. ❣🦍
Kayembe taking a nap puts the whole troop a little bit more at ease lol.
@annduncan4081 🤣 probably!
Jameela and Kunda are so adorable and are so lucky to have Freddy and Kebi who love them so much as mothers🥰 It's awesome that Kayembe gets along so well with his birth mother N'neka🥰
😁
It’s so encouraging to see N’neka and Kayembe together. She obviously has patience with him and he adores her! My hope is N’neka will want to mother her next baby herself someday. Kayembe peacefully asleep is newsworthy! I rarely see him that still!
👍😁
Everyone can breathe a nice sigh of relief when Kaye is sleeping like an Angel!😂😮💨
Mokolo is one handsome Silverback. His eyes are so expressive. Thanks for the Kunda shirt. I wore it for World Gorilla Day ❤
Great! Thanks for getting one.
Such a beautiful loving video today between mamas and babies even kayembe and his birth mother 🦍❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣
🤗
So beautiful to see Katembe bond with his birth mom. I shed a tear. I feel so bad for Tulsi. She seems so lonely.
🤗
Beautiful video! I always enjoy seeing this troop of gorillas! Thanks
👍😁
Larry thanks as always for an awesome video.❤ Hope the grands are doing well and spending quality time with Grandpa ❤ Do you take the older one to see the 🦍 yet?
Thanks, not yet. (Right now his mom uses that for their special trips.
I think Jameela has been watching Godzilla movies.
🤣
Morning 🌞 Larry 🖐🏼😊
Morning Mokolo Troop💪🐒🌞 😊❤

👋 thank you
I missed Tusa! Kayembe and Nneka have a good relationship. I love seeing them embrace.
👍
I kind of wish Tusa would have a baby. She needs a little one to bond with.
😁
Is Tusa pregunta? Her belly looks big, wishing her good luck in having a baby soon.
Thank you Larry for the videos, I enjoy them👍🥰🙏❤️👏
Just beautiful!
We are in Columbus and would love to visit up there.
Do they have wheelchair accommodation?
I Thank you Larry for your wonderful videos.
A sure cheer up in sometimes a wicked day
Yes , the Cleveland zoo has wheelchair accommodations. And free tram rides to take you to the building where the gorillas are.
Thank you for another great video. I really like the way you give us Information about this family😊
Thank you
I hope when Nneka gets pregnant again she will have learned enough to raise the baby herself.
👍
Stomping Jameela! I have the song Waltzing Matilda stuck in my head now lol
🤣
I used to watch these videos just for Jameela now I can’t tell you who my favorite gorilla is. They are very special animals.
🤗
I started watching your videos after Jam was brought there and I am an avid fan. ❤❤ Another troop I enjoy watching is DJ’s family with Jabali and Ringo, there are a riot to watch (Thailand zoo). Thanks for introducing me to this troop. 😊
Thanks for sharing, glad to have you following along! 👍😁
Thanks Larry for such great videos! Always loved them. I thought I read that Jameela weighs more than Kunda! If she’s going to be a big girl. Always love 💕 watching these three little ones. ❤❤
Yes she does weigh a bit more than Kunda. Today’s video have weights , 15 vs. 12-1/2
@@larrysanimalsafari Wow! Jameela is going to be a big healthy one when she gets older. Getting that extra milk 🥛 is doing a great job.
Thank you for v this video! There was one moment at the beginning when Freddy sighed and tipped her head. I suddenly thought of all the grandmas and aunts who have stepped in to raise children. ❤🎉❤
😲😁👍
It stills blows my mind that Freddie started lactating for Kayembie and Jameela! Especially with it being almost 20 years since she had her own. Lastly, what a treat to see Nneka and Kayembie interacting! He loves everyone! Thanks Larry! I really enjoyed this one!
Thank you! 😁
Jameela has adapted to her surrogate momma .
.Freddy
Awe this is tearjerking.
🤗
Kayembe looks like an angel when he is sleeping 😈😂
🤗
I wonder if Frankie misses her other children. Jameela and Frankie are adorable. ❤ from Amsterdam.
😁
So happy Jameela's so big! I remember watching the videos from when she was born and they were so worried because she was a premie baby but hopefully that's all in the past now and she's with her loving family.
Thanks for the video Larry.
👍😁
THANKS FOR SHARING LARRY! LOVE THEM ALL! HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND!🦍🦍🦍🦍🫶
Thank you!
Love watching these amazing gorillas. Can someone answer for me if kayembe will grow up to be called a silverback?
Yes, all make gorillas will develop that silvery color on their backs. It might not be till they are 18-20 years old but it will change from black to silver.
@@larrysanimalsafari thank you for the reply
Freddy looks like she’s thinking of getting a manicure soon😂 “hmmmm getting a little long and I’d like to try a fancy color”…..
😂
N'neka and Kayembe!!!!!!! Those hugs were so special!!!! I hope we get to see more of those two together
🤗
Always wonderful to see the whole troop. And love the extra information. Kayembe, Kunda and Jameela are thriving. And fascinating to watch the different gorilla mom parenting styles. Thanks, Larry!
👍😁
Great video, Larry! I was wondering who Kayembe’s birth mother was and you provided the answer…thanks! I also like your updated introduction and ending! 😊❤
Thank you 👍😁
Every time I stop and think about the fact that Freddie is a foster mother, it warms my heart.
🤗
Tusa! Tusa! Tusa! ❤❤❤
👍
Great footage, again! Wonderful to see the special and quiet moments between the grownups and the babies. Does Mokolo have a bald spot on the top of his head?
@@muthaiga63 Yes and it’s just a bald spot like human men get sometimes. It’s so funny but he’s has great eyes and has such handsome poises. He like Freddy has thoughtful insightful eyes that say so much and he went from being a bachelor for most of his life and is now just a wonderfully well rounded Silverback. It’s amazing to watch Kayembe’ watching, learning and copying his Father. It’s sweet to see them play but I really love watching them have quite time together and Mokolo’s obviously communicating with Kayembe , then Kay is listening so intensely with such respect. Just one of those great troops/families that’s a joy to just watch/study.
Yes.
@kelleybutler9203 👍😁
What Larry doesn't mention is that Freddy is the eldest of eight herself; So, she watched her mother raise all those babies and that is the reason Freddy is the amazing mother that she is today.
True, that was not in today's video. But if you watch my video on Freddy - found in the Meet Cleveland Gorillas Playlist. I devote the entire video with facts about Freddy. (For recent subscribers, I'd like to share, I have one video for each adult).
@@larrysanimalsafari right.
Just so you know, it wasn't a criticism. It was something I learned about her that I thought was really interesting.
She's a super-hero Mom.
Thanks, Larry for another beautiful video. Your camera is outstanding and really captures all the details and the special moments. It was heartwarming to see Kayembe spend time with his birth mom N’neka. I think he craves the extra attention since Jameela came along. Also, I heard it was N’neka’s birthday on the 23rd. Did they have a birthday party for her? Also, I was wondering if the zoo was going to give Tusa her painting supplies as I heard she liked to paint at the previous zoo, she was at. I think that would be great enrichment for her.🦍💕🙂
I did not go to the zoo on her birthday - and have heard nothing about special treats or anything for her/them that day. Painting - no talk of that either. Sorry
@andreaschwartz9886 I've noticed that some zoos celebrate gorilla birthdays at ages 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, and every year after. Still, I wonder if they will give Kayembe an extra celebration on his 3rd birthday since he was the first gorilla born there.
@dmoore2732 😁
I love to see my baby Jamella , she's so pretty and healthy I see she's eating what her mom Freddie eat and that's healthy for her.(Thanks Very Much Mr.Larry For The Videos that's you Show us❤) Thanks To The Staff's at Cleveland zoo 🥰❣️💯💋🌿🌿🌿🌱🌱🌱☘️☘️☘️🍀🌹
👋😁
So I take it that Kebi is now allowing some supplemental feedings, and hopefully soon Kunda will at least catch up to Jameela in weight. How many times a day is Jameela fed by staff?
Currently, Jameela gets 3 bottles per day. Kunda participates in the afternoon feedings (Gatorade/green beans/brown flax seed, sometimes other choices).
So is Kunda getting supplemental feedings now? I thought Jameela was bigger than her cuz Jameela is a little chunky monkey. I love her chunky little body LOL. Kunda should be bigger than her since she is 6 months older. Kebi must have not had enough milk to feed her.
Kinda only gets supplemental feeding at the afternoon training sessions.
@@larrysanimalsafari oh good it's something....hopefully she will gain more weight
They are such a wonderful family/troop.
👏👏😁
You would never know that Freddie was not Jameela's natural mother. Such love!
🤗👍
I love seeing all the gorilla's. Is Kebi allowing Kunda to get supplemental feedings now?
Yes, Kebi brings her to the keepers when everyone goes for afternoon snack.
@@larrysanimalsafari They get everyday snacks? That's nice.
Oh Kebi, finally gained enough confidence to let Kunda enjoy the extra snacks. It will do her good! It's nice that it seems, and we can see that, that you are slowly but surely giving Kunda more independence and freedom. Even with a not too wild Kayembe nearby you react a lot calmer which is also good for the atmosphere in the group. Proud of you lady!👍🏻👌🏻🦍🐒
@Catwomanria13579 👏😁
Great to hear! Hopefully now her weight will catch up.
Absolutely loving these videos, thank you Larry for such great content 😊, im touched by the whole troop & i am hoping to visit next year from across the pond 😀
Thank you and I hope you can! 👋😁
Thanks Larry 😊❤️👍🏻
👍😁
Would Freddy remember her children
I imagine she would.
The gorilla, Koko (the one who learned sign language), taught us that gorillas have great long term memories. I’m sure Freddy would recognize her children. I sometimes wonder if that’s why she’s so willing to foster because she misses her own children☺️
@NaturalNumi Freddy was separated from her two oldest girls when they were 5 and 6 months old. I'm sure she would know Moka and Alice though.
@dmoore2732 👍😁
You could not have a better group. They are such a good group. Something about this group is so special.
👍🤗
Love this entire gorilla family so much. I wish little Tusa had a little friend too.
👍😁
Freddy and Jameela are so sweet together!
😁
Kay with Neka are soo cute. I wonder if Kay knows Neka is his birth mom.
🤔
I’ve never seen N’Neka so loving toward Kayembe!❤
🤗
Kayembe has been so loved & socialized by Freddie that I think he’ll play with anyone! I wonder if he even knows that N’neka is his birth mother! (Maybe she’s just someone else he can play with??!!!)
I love the gorillas 🦍!!
Thanks for the vids & informational comments.
I’m wondering the same thing. Does Kayembe know N’neka is his birth mom.
Only if someone tells him. Would he understand at his age?
@@annecarter5181 I think she’s his favorites auntie and playmate but it’s good she’s actually enjoying spending more time with him. I do think that since Freddy allowed Kayembe when he was old enough to visit and play and (Freddy) had no problems letting Kayembe spent plenty of play time with N’Neka. I’m sure the Gorilla SSP along with the AZA is hoping all this is helping her if she has another baby in a few years, that she’ll be more ready and her mothering instinct’s will be strong. Just like her first daughter that her own MaMa raised, N’Neka loved playing with her (Kabibi) but that tragic accident happened when she was 16 months old that was a traumatic situation for the entire family/troop, the zookeepers at the zoo where it happened and all the devoted people that had fallen in love with little Kabibi.
@@larrysanimalsafari Well spoken wise words as always Larry.
😁
Sweet video of our gang❣️Thanks

Freddy loves to love babies❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂❤😅😅❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
🤗🤗
They’re so cool
Gorillas
look like they get carpel tunnel on the regular
😲😁. Thanks for sharing - interesting.
Hi Larry. As always thank you so much for sharing these videos with us. I love seeing this family especially Kayembe, Kunda and little Jameela. This time next year we’ll see all three kids tearing around the place, playing and wrestling (if Kebe loosens up and isn’t still a helicopter mom then 😂) Always a joy to see not just the babies but the adult gorillas too. ❤
Thanks for sharing a comment today!
Is Kebi allowing the zookeepers to give Kunda any supplemental food now?
Only at the afternoon training sessions.
N'neka and Kayembe are so cute together here. I love seeing their faces next to each other.
I would love to see Kayembe and Kintaro run around and wreak havoc together. It would certainly be entertaining. 😂
👍😁
Omg kayembe and Neka sweet he sees she now as mom😍❤️oh Freddy is jealous hey leaves my son 😂sweet Nneka love kayembe 😍❤️
🤗
Ohhhhh Fredricka é uma mãe e tanto oooooo.
Adoro ver essa cena as duas juntas, muito lindooooo...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
👏👏😁
I am wondering if Freddy has any reaction when Kayembe gets near Neka
I have not seen any change in her behavior when that happens
Does Kayembe know that Nneka is his biological mom?
We don’t know. Not sure if he would understand that at his age.
Kunda is that sweet, well-mannered, little girl with the best helicopter mom ever! 🩷
Kayembe still needs to feel nurtured like an infant. It looks like he is pretending to be
younger than he is, for that extra love and attention. 💙
👍🤗
I think our sweet toddler also loves to enjoy warm hugs undisturbed. Freddy also plays with him, but her first attention is always for baby Jam, who still needs close care. Kayembe always has to share her with his sister and can enjoy the undivided attention for him only with Nneka. And then fall asleep satisfied at Nneka's feet. Beautiful image🦍🐒❣️
@Catwomanria13579 👍🤗
@@Catwomanria13579 Undisturbed was the perfect way to put it. I just loved seeing him with N'Neka. 🩷🩷🩷
HI, Larry. How many teeth does Jameela have?
Gorillas have the same number of teeth that humans have. How mantis she have today ….,🤷♂️
she's not nursing - you can see that Freddie has no milk.
Depending on the time of day, and how recently Jameela was nursing. “Things” change throughout the day.
@@tc6664 Just like Kunda tried to nurse but Kebi’s milk hadn’t replenished from morning feeding yet either. There’s a study on Freddy’s spontaneous lactation, the Smithsonian with the Gorilla SSP did research to test and it was just like normal gorilla nursing milk. I think it’s happened twice before Freddy that was on record but they were both younger foster moms.
Yes, thanks , replenished was the word I couldn’t think of. 😁
@@larrysanimalsafari😂🤣, it’s the age Larry, I recognize it sadly😉
😲🤣🤣👍
Thanks for the great videos.
You are welcome!
Amazing time for them and lovely.

I really like the gorillas, esp. Freddie

Does kunda get supplemental feedings now? Did they train me into allow it?
Kinda only gets supplemental/additional food provided at the afternoon training time.
Well she might be tiny but she is mighty!
@beckyhodges4287 🤗
Kunda and Kaye look like dad!😊
😁
Weer een geweldige video Larry! 💯
Thank you
The main thing I’ve learned from your videos, is just how nurturing and loving gorillas are with each other. I keep saying this, but this is one of my favorites. Watching the love between Freddy and Jameela, N’neka and Kayembe (which just made my heart swell when she kissed him), and Kunda. It would be amazing to know what they think. I love listening to the sounds too. Thanks Larry for the time you get to spend with them. Tusa almost looks pregnant, do you think she’ll have a baby in the future?
Thank you. Whether Tulsa’s has a baby in the future is decided by the gorilla SSP and Assoc. Of Zoos & Aquariums.
@@larrysanimalsafari oh wow, I didn’t know that. I guess I should read up on gorilla mating. Thank you.
👍😁
I’ll save you some reading…. Gorillas in AZA accredited zoos in North American are on birth control. If they were allowed to reproduce freely we would need lots more money to build lots more habitats in zoos. The gorilla SSP follows a controlled breeding program to ensure a healthy, sustainable, biologically diverse and demographically varied population. More info available at AZA.ORG.
Tchau Larry....
😁
❤❤❤❣
😁
Tusa 👀
Tusa is not in every video I create.
Larry, are baby boy gorillas generally more rambunctious than baby girl gorillas?
That was very interesting info about Kunda weighing more than Jameela. It's nice to hear that
Kebi is finally allowing the zookeepers to give her supplemental feedings. 🩷
Well, my understanding is baby boy humans ARE more rambunctious than baby girls (toddlers actually) . I’d expect the same from male gorillas.
It is largely true that there can be big differences between boys and girls in both humans and gorillas. Although in both types there are those who do not meet the 'standard', the exceptions. My husband always called me 'Stirling Moss' (Formula 1 driver from 100 years ago or something) because of my driving style, while I clearly see and experience that most women drive 'well-behaved' and 'more careful'. And I now also notice this in the young gorilla girls, although I ultimately consider Jameela 'cooler' than Kunda in the long run. But who knows, I might be wrong! And Kayembe: One brilliant bundle of energy, radiant, smart, well-raised by Freddy and have almost no fear for nothing. He will hopefully one day be a fantastic silverback and father🐒🦍
@@larrysanimalsafari I guess we shall all find out soon. 😁
