My father had a Citroen DS 21 Pallas, probably a 1968. Dark green, white paint top, gold velour seats, white leather on the inside of the doors. Adjustable height suspension. Beautiful interior, smooth ride, had a very stable and precise ride like on steel rails, laughed at snow with front drive and Michelin tires, and had about 2 inches of soft foam on the floor that kept your feet very comfortable. It was a very nice car. Long time ago. Cars gone, dad's gone, and I'm not too far behind them.

@SEIKA I seem to remember the height adjustable suspension was standard. But they may also have leaked green hydraulic fluid. My father mentioned "green blood".

@SEIKA This may be late however:
The Adjustable suspension was pretty much standard in all Citroens except American imports since America at the time forbid cars from having adjustable bumper heights.
These cars were designed to drive in their standard "drive" height. The low height setting was there for a totally depressurised suspension where the car would be lying on its Rubber Bumpstops instead and isn't meant for any form of "spirited driving". Some cars came with a second height setting, a rather "special height" or "loading height" which raised the car ever slightly above the normal drive height for some rougher terrain or to make it easier to load stuff into it. Then finally is the high height setting which raises the car to its maximum height but also means the suspension doesn't dampen anything anymore and driving at anything above 20km/h can result in bending the hydraulic struts.
The Cars from 1960 to 2002 used the Green LHM Hydraulic Oil for the Hydropneumatic system which powered everything from the suspension to the power steering to the brakes. The suspension tends to leak when it gets old due to the rubber soft hoses (return hoses and low pressure hoses) cracking from age, and the rubber seals inside the high pressure system perishes after a while. The Cars also used Nitrogen filled spheres for the dampening, these had to be replaced every 5, 7 or 10 years depending on how much you drive the car. You generally note that the ride becomes harder over time as the spheres perish and the nitrogen leaks out of them. Pretty easy to replace them, done a few myself as I was in the process in 2020 of restoring my 1981 Citroen CX Prestige.

Well, that’s just it. It wasn’t ahead of its time. America used to be only Big competitor and so car companies set the standard on what was considered “luxury” and “new” but while that’s as happening, car companies in the EU and Japan were developing and releasing cars that were far better in almost every way than the common American car. The only thing that America had that the EU didn’t was the adrenaline and dopamine rush that you get when driving gas guzzling (but powerful) V8’s. This car wasn’t ahead of its time, but it was ahead of any car in the most power hungry, pathetic, scummy and (somehow) richest country on earth.

@@diplexnormal3353 I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're getting at exactly. i am european and i can assure you that the european car market did not see the american as a competitor in any way. especially not in these decades. this car was ahead of its time because all designers drew their models with a ruler. both on the outside and especially on the inside, such as the dashboard. that is why it's admired still by many car enthusiasts. You're welcome.

The owner looks young, yet the style of his watch is almost as old as the car, a reissue of quartz watches like Seiko or Casio !
If I were asked to define luxury in cars, I would say: comfort, silence, road holding, design, technological innovation and space, this car fulfils all these criteria, that's why it has become a world icon, because it's far ahead of its time!
In addition it has exterior and interior lines that do not aggress the view, the forms are often round, soft and the ergonomics of the dashboard is thought as for the household appliances of the time and it is not a coincidence, the one who drew them was a designer in the household appliances!
The door handles are very well placed, the grip is perfect, the single-spoke steering wheel is also revolutionary and contributes to the very Zen atmosphere that reigns inside!
There is so much to say about this beautiful car!😊

It's been my dream to have enough money to be able to get one restored and own, but sadly I haven't won the Lottery yet. nearest I got was a Citroen BX same suspension system, but not as good quality. To change a wheel you would start the car pull a lever, the suspension would lift up the car, you would then put a special prop under the side rail then lower the lever, the supension would retract and the proped side wheels would lift off the ground! Crazy cool.

Had one in Kenya bought cheap. The ride was the best on our bad roads. Problem was the hydraulic system. Needed fluid from France. Happy to see France back in Kenya. Bring them back.

Citroën DS must be THE most beautiful car ever made in the whole history of cars! I can't think of a car that comes even close to the DS. It does have the WOW-factor, unlike most other cars. Citroën should definately relaunch the DS, in its original design and of course with hydropneumatic suspension, but add modern technology, motors and the newest safety standards. Sales would boom, I'm sure.

I got a question, (hopefully you won't take it the wrong way,) did I saw correctly, did you stayed with the clutch pressed while waiting on the red light? From 4:00 to 4:24 ish.
I mean as far as I've been told, that's how you shorten the life span of clutch (to put it politely).

    • @SLeslie
