I'm heading off on my first post-covid run on Friday, I'm very excited but also a little nervous! Question for the q+a: do you watch other running youtubers, if so who are some of your favourites, and what do you think makes good running content?
So awesome to see you back & (largely) adhering to your own advice!!🤣 I’ve found whenever I’ve had a forced break, it has make me fall in love with running all over again when I get back to it…& (more often than not), most definitely a grind to get back…”not easy” & suffering somewhat is type 2 fun for runners, right?!🤣 Hair hack update…awesomeness!!! It even survived hill sprints!!! I need to work on floof control tho🤣very similar hair to yours…the floof is REAL!!!🤣😂🤣😂
I was exactly like this when I was ill. Obviously didn’t have to get back to a competitive standard, but it was still driving me crackers ( doesn’t take a lot). Love the myomasters, but could never afford to splash out like that. They have some brilliant reviews though. Good to see you back out there ☺️
Just wanted to say how much I am enjoying these videos….I am 51 and have been running since I was 48 ….have a long history of an eating disorder…..and I guess I wanted to encourage you . I love your approach to running and you have so many encouraging and lovely parts to your personality…. I hope you can carry these on ! Xx
Question(s) for next week: do you use a HR strap / arm band or just watch? And do you train “with” HR or “by” HR? In other words, do you come back from a run and check the data and then form an opinion, or do you run according to what your HR is during that run? Follow up question would be - is your answer different for different types of run (track session, threshold session, easy run etc etc)? Sorry, a question turned into a dissertation topic lol
Just the watch, used to use a strap but when I got my new watch with it built in I wore both (with my old watch too) for a few runs and the HR was very accurate on the wrist - it was the same stats as the strap. I don’t pay too much attention to the HR, just good to have it there to see where it settles for easy vs tempo vs race pace etc.
BEGINNER'S Track session example? I'm 54 and recently back into running and loving it! I've completed a few marathons this year, but would like to incorporate track sessions into my plan. Video or short explanation on "how to do Track work outs". Some very new dont know what some of the 4x200x200 mean. love your content! Jess from Texas (USA).
Thanks for this series. I had been training for a marathon (still might run it; may run the half instead) when I hit a buckle on a sidewalk and caught concreted sidewalk with my face, breaking my nose). I am sad about that but you suggested decent coping strategies that are keeping me from making my injury worse.
Gee, a smart runner. I ran through Covid. Had about 3 weeks ago. Same symptoms. Still rare cough. Fatigue is worst part but you are way younger than I. It slowly passes but still dealing with it. Good luck. Like the videos for some bizarre reason.
You are just so natural and down to earth that everyone can just relate and find themselves in the videos and get the positive vibe, so keep them coming 😃 I am struggling with my weight, cant stop losing kgs even though i eat a lot so i am trying out different things to sort it out hence the question.... Q: You made "what i eat in a day" and talked a lil bout eating disorder, but could you give some more info about your nutrition, calories count if you do, how strict are you, carb loading, proteins, healthy food and stuff like that? Thanks and love it!
I don’t count calories at all and just really eat when I’m hungry! I try to make sure I get plenty of carbs to fuel my runs and after, plus a decent amount of protein and fats from things like oily fish and avocados. Due to my past with eating issues it’s best if I focus on what I like to eat and not overcomplicate it too much
Good to see you back it! Bit of an interesting/odd question, but for someone who has gone from running a 30 minute 5k to around 25 minute, how would you recommend they go about getting to that elusive sub 20 minute 5k?
I'm kinda proud of myself. My first activity back from Covid was a 30 minute walk! Then a little longer the next day, then a little bike ride, then I might have gone for it. Haha, I couldn't wait any longer!
No Covid yet, but I did have an overuse injury (calf and groin strain) from a 485lb squat followed immediately by a 16 mile easy run. Doesn’t it feel amazing to get back to your favorite things?! So motivating to have something to struggle at.
Nice video :) Questions: Did you have a favourite track race this season? Was there one you are proudest of, either result wise or how you worked through it? Is there something which really worked for you in this track season training wise which was new or unexpected? What are your hopes for either next season or next track season?
I know Daniel has made several appearances on the channel, but when the footage cut from Phily "thanking" Daniel for giving her COVID to that gorgeous dog who needed pets, I decided that was the new Daniel. They are a very capable cameraperson! 😂
Hello Phily! Really like your channel and watching your training and running. Love your watch and all of the features, can you give us some details on it and how it helps your training? Thanks and I hope you continue to recover.
Great video, I really admire your calm and thought-through comeback! Here is my question: What would be your number one tip for middle distance track races for someone that has only done road and cross country races? Think I want to try a few next season.
Try all the distances and see what you like! Entering open meets are a great way to test this out or if your club has league races. It will feel FAST compared to cross country but great fun too!
How long was you off running Phily? i love your advice. Im currently sickening for something since last Thursday it began. Now on Monday. Im climbing up the wall. Tried a run yes and it was terrible. 3 miles and at 9.30 mm. Below my recovery pace. 🙏
Love your videos…you’re adorable! Just wondering how you motivate yourself to get through track workouts. Reps are tough for me and I struggle to get through them, especially anything more than 800s. Do you allow yourself to stop in between? Glad you’re back running again!
Hey!:) Firstly, I just wanted to tell you that you are a big inspiration for me! The last time I went for a long run I thought of what you said in one of your videos and it motivated me so much, so thanks! And of course a question😄: my heart rate is always higher than “normal” but I don’t feel that it’s high (if you know what I mean😅). Do you think that high heart rate always means bad fitness?
Has your HR always been around 140bpm when running? Mine goes up to around 170 (I've just started running) and I'm wondering if it eventually will come down over time, with training? Keep up the awesome content!
Welcome back Philly 👍 Question: Any thoughts on all this double threshold/lactate training that’s all the rage at the minute. Are you tempted to try it?
Glad you are back to running. Question - What motivates you when you are down or don't want to get out the door? Question - Do you suffer from SAD (Seasonal affective disorder) in the Winter months? If so what strategy do you use to get out of the funk?
I remind myself what I’m training for and the high moments - so recent wins or significant achievements and upcoming goals. I know if I slack off I won’t be putting my all into getting the best result so that helps.. and reminding myself once I’m out the door it’s always better! I don’t suffer from SAD but I do dread the runs in the dark because it’s just not as nice
Hey Phily what’s up?! Question: There’s been a little twinge in my hip for a bit, what do you think can cause that? And what can I do to make it go away:) Thanks!!
Not a clue sorry! As I’m not a physio the only injuries I have exercises for are ones I’ve experienced, definitely get it seen to by a professional they’ll be able to help
Hi from Melbourne AUS. Enjoying the videos, keep up the good work. My (random) question: What is your fastest time for completing a Rubix Cube? 😂 Think I spotted one on the shelf in this video. My goal last year was to learn how to do it, and now I can complete it in about 80 seconds. Still slow compared to some, but happy with that! Cheers.
Did you reduce your calorie consumption while on your enforced break? I find my weight tends to go up if I have to take a break as my appetite doesn’t immediately adjust to my body’s reduced needs, made even worse if I’m sat around at home bored!
Hi Phily ! First, thanks for your amazing content ! ^^ ❤ I have a question for the Q&A : I have a few running goals thant I want to train for. But I also like swimming and climbing (which btw I think are good ways of cross training). Do you think it is possible to train towards specific running goals and still be practising those other activites on the side? For example, do you think it is possible to create a HM training plan that includes swimming and climbing? Or is it too much and I should focus on just running ? Thannnx ! ☺
Phily, sending best wishes for your comeback post Covid!! The grass looks brown! How bad is the heat?! Question: What shoes are your daily runners? Also, on running form, should I be concentrating more on lifting knees or on leg kick back. What's your opinion? Thank you.
It’s been very very dry! My daily runners are the New Balance 1080s. I’d say knee drive to start with, best way to improve running form is to focus on running drills that imitate good form and doing fast strides after runs - form tends to Be better when running fast whilst under control, hope that helps!
Hey Philly just got into running and attempting a marathon in a few months. Competing In your videos looks so fun and post marathon I'd like to get into it but I'm scared it too late. Do you have any tips for getting into competitive running and how do I go about choosing a distance that suits me?
Great video and I applaud your ability to follow your own advice (even if it was not easy). Question: I recently set a PB in the 10K but felt like I could have run faster. How do you find that extra gear in a race and give your maximum effort?
I can’t really describe it but it just comes from the adrenaline! I definitely get nervous before races so I think that helps, so if you don’t get nervous find a goal that scares you or that you can invest in and maybe that will help! Other than that just focus on picking off as many people as possible
Hi Phily. Thank you for all of the great content - really enjoy your videos. For the Q and A I wondered if you had a target heart rate for either (a) during a warm up and/or (b) start of the race
Not particularly, I tend to look at my heart rate occasionally and note what it was during a run/session just so I can notice if it’s increased or decreased significantly at any point
Great to see you back (and being very sensible too). My question is do you think you are more susceptible to strains/injuries running track as opposed to road or trail running?
Thanks for the videos. For the Q&A: How often do you get new shoes? Are there any wear patterns or other metrics that indicate you need to never wear a pair again?
Great content as always ... until you specifically said it, I was none the wiser to what the hell you'd unboxed 🤣 ... you were brave running in this heat in the middle of the day ... I just couldn't bring myself to go out in the heat, so have taken to 8/9pm runs .. the second it rains this week, I'm off out for a wet-daytime run: can't wait! How good was the 10k eh? Amazing! I was soo excited watching it! ...
Well I wouldn’t say I run a household, Daniel is the one who cooks most of the time which hugely helps so I have time to get my training done in the evening! But most of the time I’m just very busy and don’t stop for air 😂
I wish I could sleep 10 hours... but I keep waking up in the middle of the night so that's a no go Also, your cat is adorable Question for your Q&A: Have you had any stints at altitude, and how'd they go?
At the moment it’s running focused strength and conditioning, so things like goblet squats, lunges, hamstring curls, Russian deadlifts and lots of core exercises. Not with a huge amount of weights involved, more focused on form and getting the reps in
I know you have done the Q&A but I would love to hear how you run with your monthly cycle. How much do you adapt your training to which phase of the month you are in? Thank you 😊 💓
I ran my first marathon last month and although it was really fun, I feel completely burnt out of running. Have you ever felt like that? And if so, how did you get back into running? I love the feeling of being able to run far, but when I think of running I get put off.
Just make sure I take my brown inhaler daily which keeps my symptoms under control. Only really get a cough or flare ups when I get sick, luckily don’t get hit too hard with allergies or the heat!
Hi Phily. Love your videos. My question for your Q&A: Are you sponsored by New Balance? It seems most of your clothing and shoes are made by New Balance. Thanks!

Welcome back M8
crazy that 3hr marathon pace is easy run pace for you...holy hell
Glad you’re back!! Yay 🎉 Please pick up a goose in your next video 🤣 Now track season is over are you going to do another marathon?

Ran this afternoon in 38°c heat with no shade. My body didn't like it. Zone 2 pace but zone 4 HR..Felt a bit funky....
Love your videos…you’re adorable! Just wondering how you motivate yourself to get through track workouts. Reps are tough for me and I struggle to get through them, especially anything more than 800s. Do you allow yourself to stop in between? Glad you’re back running again!
I don’t stop in between reps but I’ll jog in between. It’s just focusing on hitting splits and having training partners really helps!

I’ve never tried it but it sounds tiring! Not that tempted to be honest but I’d do it if my coach told me to 😂
You still make running look so easy Phily. Do you prefer the track season or do you prefer the road , cross country season ? Another great watch 👍
When you said I only got 6 or 7 hours I was like, damn that's a good night for me. 😑
Glad you are back to running.

Great to see you back (and being very sensible too). My question is do you think you are more susceptible to strains/injuries running track as opposed to road or trail running?
I don’t think so, I guess on the trail there’s more risk of turning an ankle so maybe!
Love your vids they always make me smile :) what sunglasses do you run in ?
Goodrs!
Thanks for the videos. For the Q&A: How often do you get new shoes? Are there any wear patterns or other metrics that indicate you need to never wear a pair again?
Every 2/3 months. I don’t measure the miles per pair particularly, just notice when they’ve lost most of their tread, usually on the heel to mid-foot
Great video again. What's ur favourite biscuit 🍪?
Great video! Is it hard to run while holding a camera?

Question: What uncommon sport (so not running, cycling, swimming) would you love to try? And why...
I’d have to say skiing, something I’d love to try when I’m no longer running - both cross country and downhill!
I wish I could sleep 10 hours... but I keep waking up in the middle of the night so that's a no go
Also, your cat is adorable

I answered this one ☺️
How do you manage your asthma with your running, flair ups, allergies, and does the heat affect your breathing?
Just make sure I take my brown inhaler daily which keeps my symptoms under control. Only really get a cough or flare ups when I get sick, luckily don’t get hit too hard with allergies or the heat!
Loving the channel. What would you rather win, olympics, worlds or commonwealth medal?
Olympics every day
QUESTIONS:
Will you be running the London Marathon in October this year?
How do you run with your camera?
How many hours sleep do you usually get?
No to London, not this year but hopefully soon!
Hi Phily. Love your videos. My question for your Q&A: Are you sponsored by New Balance? It seems most of your clothing and shoes are made by New Balance. Thanks!
Question for next week: When did you first represent GB and how did you qualify and/or get selected
I answered this one 😁
@@PhilyBowden thank you so much! It means a lot!
How much threshold training do you do if any and if you, do you find it useful?
I love threshold work and do it weekly, I think it’s great for building up that endurance so super important for 10k upwards
I ran while I had Covid. I just did easy runs, but it didn't effect me.
Hi Philly what’s you ideal distance if you were at a world championship or commonwealth games
Hmmm at the moment maybe half marathon but they don’t do that, so in the future it’d be the marathon!
State of the uni sports field.
Phily hello 👋
How do you get into running races on the track?
Join your local athletics club!
if you have to charge it, it is battery powered
Does Daniel run? What's his 400m time?
Do u prefer track or cross country?
for the Q&A: what piece of advice would you offer someone like me doing their first Great North Run next month?
Enjoy it! The crowds are amazing so soak that all up. Pace yourself so you have some energy left for those last few miles and don’t get caught up with anyone sprinting off the line
What are your goals for racing come next track season?
I’d love to run under 32 minutes for 10k
Looooove ur videos!! Anyone ran in adidas?? Boston or adios helpppp for long tempos and stuff
Questions for the q+a:
1. Do you have any interest in the sky running races ?

Would you rather fight 1 horse sized duck, or 100 duck sized horses?
I’ll take on the giant duck 😅
Amazing that jabbed athletes still getting coof can’t connect the dots🤔🤔
New variants, vaccine effectiveness waiting? My 3rd jab was back in December
