MARATHON RUNNER RUNS UP TALLEST MOUNTAIN IN GREECE!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 сен 2022
- Watch me run up the tallest mountain in Greece - Mount Olympus, legend home of the Greek Gods. I planned this epic trail run when we went out to Greece on holiday last month and it did not disappoint. Steep difficult trails, plenty of climbing, a little bit of drama (as always), but it would all be worth it for the view at the top.... right? Don't call it a career change to trail running.. not yet anyway.

my fav video from you so far. hahaha. your stress about "not being a trail runner" is exactly how I feel running on flat pavement or even worse, a track !! what a great video. I run mountain trails so often that I forget that for someone coming from track or road, trails can seem like an alien landscape. you've obviously got the aerobic engine, you just need to practice your climbing economy . BTW, power-hiking steep ascents is a legit part of trail "running". at a certain gradient , hiking is faster and more efficient than running for many people. I used to listen to music and make videos of my trail running....but...after a few sprained ankles I stopped the music and videos so I could focus...what you are doing is really hard...making an interesting trail running video. nice work !!
Thank you this is one of my favourite comments! It’s funny, the trails are that exact alien landscape for me, far more technical and mentally challenging than the flat, so hats off to you! And glad I’ve learned that power hiking was in fact what I was meant to be doing, I just thought I was being weak by walking and using my arms to hold myself up 😂
@@PhilyBowden I use to think like that when I went on trails around and near where I live until I watched a trail race and heard that power hiking is part of trail running. You would have been so far out your comfort zone when you did this run. Could you see yourself doing something like this again?
Who's that handsome bloke near the end 😉
I'll always respect Phily's ability to make a full breakfast and get her morning coffee without opening her eyes 😁I love the comment about the "old school" version of live-tracking someone while they're on a run is just ... hoping they're still alive out there 😛Mega trek Phily, I'm glad you gradually embraced the nature of the trail and walked when you had to, took in the view, tried your best to enjoy the experience while still making it a workout 🦵Also, Daniel enjoying the idyllic peace and beauty with the hard cut to Phily scrambling up a mountain is just masterful editing! lol
PS. I remember struggling with ankle stability when I first started my (flat land!) training, I can only imagine how many times you rolled over on yours while trying to take on a mountain trail - hopefully all your limbs and joints are intact and recovering well!
Hey Phily, as a Greek this is my favourite vid of yours 😆. Some history for our beloved Marathon:
"The name Marathon comes from the legend of Philippides (or Pheidippides), the Greek messenger. The legend states that, while he was taking part in the Battle of Marathon, which took place in August or September, 490 BC, he witnessed a Persian vessel changing its course towards Athens as the battle was near a victorious end for the Greek army. He interpreted this as an attempt by the defeated Persians to rush into the city to claim a false victory or simply raid, hence claiming their authority over Greek land. It is said that he ran the entire distance to Athens without stopping, discarding his weapons and even clothes to lose as much weight as possible, and burst into the assembly, exclaiming νενικήκαμεν (nenikēkamen, "we have won!"), before collapsing and dying".
Fun fact: Runners participating in the Athens Marathon yearly event get to run the historic route from the city of Marathon to the city of Athens.
This is a beautiful trail run, it’s going on my bucket list. That fall looked nasty! Glad you’re ok.
Yes Phily. More trail running please! You’d smash some of the ultra events with your fitness.
Did this one back in 2017 and the same mistake as you in 9:00 😂 Hiked from Litochoro until the Refuge A on 1st day, slept there on top of a dining table as there wasn't any space left and then hiked until the top early morning. Best trip I've ever done 100% 🗻 Thanks for the great content, Phily!
Amazing, that’s what Daniels brother and girlfriend did and they got engaged at the top! 🥹 definitely will have to do it next time I go there, although we’ll be walking not running if I do it with Daniel 😅
It's everything about perspective ... for example ... Everest South Base Camp in Nepal is at an altitude of 5,364 metres so you have an 8848 - 5364= 3484 meters feeling. Olympus Base Camp is at sea level so you have a 2917 meters feeling. Quite same as Everest
You made it sound so simple "I love heights, I love heights, I love heights" 🙃 If only it was that easy! I have real problems with heights, which is a real pain considering I live in Switzerland...
Back in March you said "but my God, you just can't avoid the hills up there" while running in Swinley Forest, so I was quite surprised to hear you enthusiastically declaring you'd be running up Mount Olympus! Well done!
Brilliant video Phily, trail running is brilliant and the scenery is awesome, do more it could be your forte 😀👍
Luckily there’s no mountains near me so it’ll have to be a rare holiday “treat” 😂
An epic ascent, worthy of Homer.
A pity that Ray Harryhausen is no longer available. You could have had an encounter with a Greek god or two, some jogging skeletons or a cyclops on a training run.
I look forward to your next great adventure, with or without special effects.
My fave Philly video to date. I love the trails, it's so nice to see a road runner on the trails. Much respect to you for giving it a crack. Well done.
Aw thank you Larry, was certainly humbling!
What a bundle of joy she is.
Hi Phily,
after watching your channel for some time, this video hit differently. In fact, it made me feel compelled to jump into my running gear and go for a little run (which is blasphemous to say probably because as an unfit dude I do in fact walk more than I run xd). Here's me hoping I'll stick to it this time! New videos from you always cheer me up, so I just wanted to say thank you real quick!
Seems like a good warm up for the Barkley marathon. Time to write that letter begging to get in.
“Google’s Barkley Marathon”
OH. MY. GOD! That looks insane
@@PhilyBowden "Where dreams go to die" is a good documentary on it.
I love the comment, she got lost right from the beginning, what the hell. That was fun.
Well done Phily great effort looked really nice up the mountain trail treacherous at times for you but you did it 👏 👍💪
what a fantastic run!! Trail running is the BEST! Good work!
yes malaka, i like!
Hats off to you for attempting to run it. I would have made it a bush walk. You had me seriously nervous at some of those drops from the narrow paths too 😯
Awesome vid, "Philly Bowden, ultra trail runner". Just back from a week in Greece and running in the heat is no joke! Running on flat road there rather than the hilly trails of the Peak District made an interesting change!
Next time you've a race up in Manchester pop south a touch and do a recovery run on the trails here, not quite as high as Olympus but some beautiful views to be had around here!
Brilliant effort. My favourite running vid so far.
Nice adventure! I have a Mount Olympus in my locale as well (just outside of Salt Lake City). Trail running is definitely a different beast than road / track running. I don't do it very often on account I am worried about tripping or rolling an ankle. I do power hiking if I want a cardiovascular change while reducing the risk of injury. Enjoyed the video and scenery.
Howdy neighbor! I've lived in the shadows of "Mt Olympus" my whole life and I've never been to the peak! Gotta change that
@@ChrisRobinsonutah I've heard it is a tough hike and a lot of people have told me it isn't very fun. I've done most of the hikes in the Wasatch several times but I still have Mt Olympus to do as well.
I didn't think you were serious but kudos to you for doing it.
Greetings from Greece!!!!
Great video Phily, super difficult running trails whilst not snapping your ankle at any point, let alone with the mad elevation. Hats off
Haha exactly Rich, tempted to give it a go?
Stunning run and climb, i love running in Greece.
was unexpectedly taken on a trail run by my run club yesterday (was literally 6k) but that nearly killed me off (ankles just about survived). I'll stick to the roads and track thanks
Mumma says oooh that one was scary watching!! Love the stunning scenery sweetie 😄❤
Thanks Mum 😂
Well done for conquering the mountain. Also not a trial running, love the black stuff!
Amazing Philly - I do love a trail - not that iv run a mountain ! Well Iv walked up snowdon if that counts, well not all of it - the summit was too foggy so we couldn’t get all the way up - but anyway amazing hun - Loved ur vid 🫶 x
What spectacular views! I like to run on trails better than the roads, but not quite that extreme. I hope you actually enjoy the rest of your holiday.
That was great Phily, well done!
Trail running is a different beast. I raced a 25k out-and-back mountain run back in June, started at ~2200 m elevation and the high point was a touch over 2700 m. The last 3 km to the finish was rolling hills and just overall brutal.
100% wow, that sounds super tough! Where was that? Must be even harder racing on trails like that, I imagine there’s human traffic jams!
@@PhilyBowden In Wyoming. Fortunately the course changed from the previous year and the 'back' part was a different route so there was only really a couple spots where there could have been traffic jams, but there really wasn't.
Well done, Phily! With your base fitness and a bit of specific trail training, you'd be on top of the podium! Watch some of the Golden Trail series races, I could imagine you throwing down with those women in no time!
Well done Philly! Sorry about the fall. I don't like heights. That landscape was amazing
Thanks Jason, luckily it wasn’t too bad! And definitely worth it for the views 😄
Look even at a 1/3 of the height, running up a mountain is no joke. Heck, hiking it is a workout alone.
I am very interested in your video. Thank you for encouraging me to be more diligent in exercising.
Well done Phily, as someone who loves trails and hills, it was great to see you immediately meet all the trail runner bingo stereotypes 😂
You'll be doing Spartathlon in no time, forget the track 😉
You’ve got to tell me more, what are these stereotypes I fulfilled??!
I learned today that foreshadowing an ankle roll is horrible! I was wincing for you every step thereafter. Glad it was only a minor knock.
Thanks, me too.. I literally cannot watch that bit it was so painful! 🥲
Well done v brave Philly. Heights look scary
Looks like a fab trail Phily 😀
Hahaa loved this watch! Nice one Phily 🙌🏽
Trail running is a different beast 😊 I find it's good fun though. You just have to accept that it will end up being a run, walk, hike, clamber, sort of thing. Try not to die of heart attack uphill, and not to fall to ones death downhill 😅
Good for building strenght as well I think 👍and those views 😍
Absolutely! You’ve summed it up so well 🤣 Totally different ball game, the walking I hadn’t even thought about!
Ha ! The video I've been waiting for... you taking on a mountain :D
Some serious procrastinating, a couple of tumbles and thoughts of chocolate milk near the end...
Everything i expected lol... but hey- you did it...!!
Fancy the Snowdon Race next July ?? ;)
Haha a perfect summary 😂
Snowdon - I don’t think so… maybe I’ll go and watch!
Great work, Phily! Thailand trails with us next!! 😉
Where you finished the run (I don't mean Prionia in general but those steps in particular!) is where I got my only DNF. GI issues stopped me at 30/44k of the Olympus Marathon 2022. I missed those final kms that you did in the Enipeas Canyon (in reverse way). I am signing up again this year to finish the story!
Btw, the Olympus Marathon goes almost the full distance to the top (2741m altitude, Olympus tallest top is at 2918m).
Respect ✊
awesome video
Awesome, well done!
Good
If I did that run by myself, they'd find the remains of my body somewhere 2 years later. 😝 I give you tons of credit! Good job!!
Exactly the terrifying thoughts that crossed my mind during the run! 😰😂
just finished a week with 6000+ metres of ascent and the ben nevis race, so know how you feel here! nice one!
Well I feel immediately outdone, impressive!
@@PhilyBowden haha, sorry that wasn't just boasting on my part! just the life of a fell runner!
You should hike the pct
best video yet, apart from penalties
Class this Phily :)
Damn, I absolutely do no trail running (in fact I wasn't even sure I spelled 'trail' right at first) but I would totally try this. I hope your ankle is okay!
I would recommend.. with a guide or friend so you fear for your life less 😅 the rubber ankle survived to fight another day
Don’t worry about the walking - that’s just a part of trail running 😆
I prefer that to any track. Way nicer!
Nice. Now you need to come to Cape Town and run Table Mountain.
Oooft that sounds like a multi-day expedition!
Congrats! I am wondering what pal you can find at your level. Katie Schide? Joke aside, it would be fun to see you learn the ropes with someone her level and how you compare on flat versus hilly sections
Foreshadowing… mean feat? It was a bit mean to you (so glad ur ok!), but an awesome feat getting it done Philly!!🙌SO beautiful too!!
I do most of my running in suburbia but catch up with a friend once a month to run trails with quite a bit of vert…I’m not fast by any means, even on road but those sessions always seem to humble me big time!!🤣Love the scenery, the challenge & the grind with those sessions tho!!!
Foreshadowing the trail being mean to my feet 😂
I don’t know how they do it, people that live on the mountain trails and do those runs every day, it’s nuts!
@@PhilyBowden I follow an Aussie pro Trail runner on STRAVA called Lucy Bartholomew-look her up if you wanna see how nuts pro ultra runners are🤣 seriously, highly recommend the follow-she shares some beautiful scenery, the odd workout with 🐶 friends, some inhuman paces up big mountains & is a pretty dang cool human too!!
@@rmjames83 oooh nice I’ll check out her Strava, always good to have a bit of motivation from other peoples feeds!
@@PhilyBowden Her doco “running out” on her Larapinta trail (231km) adventure is super inspiring too! You can watch it here on RUclips (Salomon TV)…when/if you have time! ruclips.net/video/a5LJ36lFJuw/видео.html
To me it seems like you've done all the hard bits of trail / hill running with none of the rewards! The fast (but careful) downhills, and the wonderful views from the peaks of mountains are the two parts that make me keep coming back to hill running.
Impressive speed up the hill though, those gradients look seriously steep.
I do need to find a mountain I can summit now, need those 360 views, any UK suggestions for one that’s not TOOOO hard?
@@PhilyBowden if you get a clear day, can't beat ben nevis, and it's not 'that' hard
@@PhilyBowden Mountain runs are mostly only as hard as you make them! I think most UK mountains should be achievable with the same equipment used here. Slowing down a bit, and taking a few more view stops will make the runs a lot less hard / painful on the body.
I'm personally a fan of the mountains in the Lake District, but Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons, and the Yorkshire Dales are all not too far from central England, and would make for a great weekend / holiday of hiking or running.
made me subscribe!
I did something very similar in Turkey. This video brought back the memories, not necessarily good ones 😅🤢
Holy smokes - you're fit as f*ck. Running uphill while filming and talking... 🤯💪 I'm glad your ankle is ok!
Aw thank you Florian! I took lots of walking breaks and did nearly drop the camera 😂 yes thankfully the ankle bounced back!
You did awesome and the higher you go the less oxygen you have available. I would have been happy to just hike the mountain, no way I would have been able to run 2 miles up. If I did I would have lost a lung.
My thoughts were, at least if I run up it gets it over with quicker!
Great for us mere mortals to see professional athletes get out of the comfort zone!
Haha I too am mortal on the trails
You're going to be come an ultra trail runner now. When is the 100 miler? :)
Haha absolutely not, the 100 miler is NEVER! 😂
@@PhilyBowden I don’t believe you….😂
Phily hello 👋
You should do vlogs in general too
Daft but impressive at the same time
Western States Ultra when? :)
Thanks for great video!
this is crazy, climbing, heat, and trail. Not really the same as the track or the city blocks.
First time I've heard you semi struggle to speak whilst running!
Haha ‘semi-struggle’ is being too kind
Hi Phily, random question, but what Garmin Watchface are you using?
So I hear in trail running they call it a power hike never the W word 🎃
you should upload some gym sessions from time to time. It's just an idea to generate a new theme. (And the truth is that we all want to see those muscles pumping).
Turning into an ultra marathoner
After you gone from running on track, cross-country then trail running out all 3 in order which would be the easiest? Now try doing trail running in an actual race and see how you go😁.
You didn't even get remotely close to the top haha. It's literally only the early beginnings of the mountain. However, I also did that part of the trail and it is gorgeous.
funny enough I ran everything up to the mountain. It was simply crazy to have done that. Entire crews from countries all over the world spend 2-3 days or even more depending on if you want to do the longest trails which could easily make you stay for 6-7 days. I had 3 days sore legs after that. But when you really do all of the mountain it is truly incredible. The mountain has over 1700-1800 plant species which is more than some entire countries. So there is a huge diversity when hiking the mountain
999m climbing? Thats not a crazy number :-D
For me it is 🥲
Far from being an idiot walking up hill is some thing you do when running Snowdon trail Marathons (I can tell you a lot about that) or any Ultra trail ... you just can't risk injury or waste your energy running mountains (unless you've always been a fell runner) 😂🏃♀
This makes me feel considerably better! And having learnt that the “pros” do in fact walk as well
First!!
So UTMB next year? 🤣
Absolutely not 🤣
@@PhilyBowden 🤣😄😂🤣
The worst thing about trail running, get distracted by all the views but you need to concentrate to not roll your ankle. Vicious cycle.
Right! I had no idea trail runners had to concentrate so much, they must have a higher average IQ than the simple road and track runner like me
