I once came home from work, opened the car door, and sitting there waiting for me was a gray fluffy cat. She jumped right onto my lap and declared I belonged to her. I called her Princess. Then she let us live in her house for 9 years and we're grateful
Bitchin'. Now I'll need to get back into Dwarf Fortress. So happy for Tarn and Zach's success over this last year since they took Dwarf Fortress to market. The two of them earned every single penny. If you've not picked it up, please consider it. Few games are more worth a purchase. Always a class act, Tex. I hope Kruggsmash knows how you shout him out every time you Dorf.
I actually did have cast iron toys as a child! And yes, they were quite heavy. However, it was less "throw your back out" and more "you could bash your friend's skull in if you annoyed you" kind of heavy...
I think I remember that quote or phrase a few years or more back when it was said "You can make 20 average games over the course of time, or you can make just one extremely good one."
I’ve been having what I call the fisherdwarf’s curse. Every time I task a dedicated fisherdwarf to do that job after some time of building up my fort, initially not having them do that job because we were busy getting plants and vegetables as fruits to go as substitute food and drinks, they ALWAYS get murdered violently by a werebeast. And the collateral damage is also a dwarven child.
Tex, you are NOT good at Dwarf Fortress... but you ARE entertaining. And since this is being posted on RUclips, that strikes me as the most important point.
I had the idea of a grand fortress, towers stretching to the heavens themselves, so I set out to build them, I forgot to get a farm going in time and everybody starved to death, I think I embarked on that site three times, each time making a fuck up before about 2 years of past in game, before I gave it up
Hell yes. Dwarf Fortress has been my favourite game for about 15 years. It is, with no irony whatsoever, the most ambitious, visionary game I have ever seen. So many hours making mods, firing up forts and adventures, and witnessing the most entertaining stories videogames can offer. I can also second the Kruggsmash recommendation. Start with the legendary tale of the walrus man adventurer and his merry band of badgerpeople.
Boatmurdered is well worth the read, thank you for the suggestion. I took a day out of the middle of watching this to read it, couldn't stop. (far off trumpeting echoes menacingly)
I have actually been watching Kruggsmash for longer than I have been watching the BPL. The fact that Tex is a vocal fan always makes me happy inside. Keep spreading the good word Tex, you beautiful b@stard.
Along with others, I wish to express my appreciation for the long form play/content. It, and you, are a welcome distraction and companion in bleak times.
Dorf Fortress and Tex just took me through my On call Fix it spree today. Thank you for being their in other peoples times of turmoil. Im going to bed now.
Just discovered your channel and I love watching Kruggsmash's videos, I've watched almost all of them over the last year. Every time I hear someone mention "ficus" I think of an old commercial where someone was trying to get insurance to pay for damage to their house or car but they only covered damaged caused by ficus trees.
Dwarf fortress always brings back good memories for me, I remember a fortress by Jefmajor, what must be well over a decade ago by now, some above ground monstrosity of towers. I remember specifically how that let's play ended with all the dwarves gathered on the sky bridge before being dropped many Z levels onto the ground. Dwarf fortress always has amazing stories and I feel privileged to have listened, read, played and watched many over the years even as the years continue to make me more jaded Dwarf Fortress always brings a smile when I recall all the stories and experiences.
A Weird thing. The dwarf fortress (old) main theme is used in the hospital I work at as hold music. Someone, somewhere, in possibly IT or HR set it and its just been like that for like a decade.
If you have time for a new ttrpg Mr. Tex, I suggest one called Adventurer Conqueror King System. I am using it, alongside a Dwarf Cyclopedia splat, for mine own Dwarf Fortress tabletop game. They are reclaiming ruins from beastmen, rearing bear cavalry, bullying elves with extreme prejudice, tweaking the beards of The Elder Moot and delving deeper...
The fact that you refer to the SA Let's Play forum as being from 'back in the days' makes me feel old. I am not one of the true elders, but I believe I was there in the forum when Boatmurdered happened... wow, it's been an age. Also, Tex? I'm of the opinion that Dwarf Fortress is a perfect fit for you. You say that you are not good at video games, but DF is not about being good. It's about the journey you go on, and the stories you produce along the way. Having been marathoning some of your LPs recently, I can confidently say that, whatever skill you may or may not have? You are excellent at stories.
Re: rock jugs -- As I recall, in some parts of Germany, beer is traditionally served in these big stone mugs. And the waitresses at beer gardens will bring out like 6 or 8 of the things at once. And yes, these ladies' arms are very very toned.
It's not stone. Yes, "Stein" means "stone" but IIRC the etymology has something to do with the capacity, not the material. They're very thick ceramic mugs though and they do weigh a ton.
One of my favorite playthroughs was of Dwarf Orpahange. A nearby kingdom was completely annhilated by a goblin hoard, and I received 3 full migrate waves of just children, till my population was more than half orphans. Said hoard then showed up at my fort.
1:00:00 I've only ever once built a doomsday device in DF, a titanic water cistern as tall as the game would allow with a drawbridge at the very bottom that would explosively flood the map if opened. I was so proud of myself, until I had to use it and discovered I had missed a single roof tile somewhere and everyone drowned. Everyone but a single dwarven vampire who for some reason was a legendary swimmer. I headcannoned that he sabotaged that roof tile to claim the entire fortress and it's riches for himself when the floodgate inevitably opens. Good times.
Funny as fvck, when i got the notification for this i was in the middle of rewatching the Oilchucked dorf longplay since yesterday I was on the fourth episode lol
You know, this stream made me finally pull the trigger on getting this game. Little did I know my fortress's rolling hills were in fact Nebraska Sandhills.
Thanks man, I really needed this today and didn't even know it. This game is indirectly referenced in one of my favorite books of all time, "You" by Austin Grossman (I always say it is sort of like Ready Player One for smart people who actually know a thing or two about gaming history and development) - The company in the past hit hard times and their savant-ish co-founder wrote some stock prediction software to sell to corporations in order to turn a quick profit. Later, they find out that the back end of the software generating the economic models was actually a dwarf fortress like game, where the dwarves living their lives and going about their business were generating the data which was then presented in a professional looking front end. It ended up being a bit of a disaster due to a persistent bug in the game engine which is a great part of the story on its own. One of the few books I have read more than 3 times, very much an underappreciated classic.
Hello Mr Tex, fellow long covid sufferer here. It sucks. If you haven't already, it is worth giving rosehip tea a shot. Mild but non-trivial anti-inflammatory effect, but without the gut ulcers associated with prolongued ibuprofen use. Warning: taste may not be lovely.
There is an audio version of Boatmurdered on RUclips that is actually very well done and worth a listen... But it is still best enjoyed AFTER reading the original yourself, so I will not be linking it. :P

While I agree that game-play outweights graphics by far, I am also not used to that any more. Just had an idea for a knife fight city movie where the main character is trying to become king of knife fight city and is on the quest for the knife horse, which is a unicorn.
Howdy there Tex Hope your doing well, just thought I would say hi back. Thanks for all the great shenanigans, and hope your doing well Brother.
"Cats adopt dwarves." Ah, the cat distribution system at work
My cat adopted me, so can confirm.
My cat grabbed me when I was walking through the pound.
I once came home from work, opened the car door, and sitting there waiting for me was a gray fluffy cat. She jumped right onto my lap and declared I belonged to her. I called her Princess. Then she let us live in her house for 9 years and we're grateful
I will watch any Tex longplay purely on the basis of Tex's voice being soothing ASMR

Yup. I can't remember if that was from the Dwarf Fortress Talk or the Dwarf Fortress Round Table podcast though.
Tex may not be great at Dwarf Fortress, but he is great at being Tex.

he has a lot of practice.

That's why I build a "fishing tower" that connects to my base through a tunnel.
Wow Tex, Your fireside chat around 1:06:00 was massively inspiring. I seriously hope you and the team keep going, love the content.
Tex, you are NOT good at Dwarf Fortress... but you ARE entertaining. And since this is being posted on RUclips, that strikes me as the most important point.
Tex, can't tell you how relaxing it is to just chill and listen to your voice, thanks for all you do.

Definitely agree with the Krugg shoutout. His videos are great and he does amazing drawings to go with the storytelling.
Once any tile is exposed to sunlight, it is always exposed to sunlight, so you can cover those farms in your entryway, and they'll still produce.
