fun fact: the "despite the danger" addition to the migrant wave notification isn't as bad as it can get. I had a fort where a single forgotten beast showed up and it happened to be made of extremely hard stone and could shoot webs, making it borderline indestructible. it took my fort's population from 160 down to 70 in the span of two in-game days before it died. it took four years of constant tomb building to bury all the dead, and in that time the migrant waves were a bunch of real downers with lines like "migrants have arrived knowing this land could be their tomb" and things like that.

I had a run where somehow the dwarven species had been mulched down to 2 settlements, a low population city and a tiny village isolated to a corner of the world. My migrant waves where few and far between. And contained very few dorfs. But each and every one was an absolute basket case and some kind of God tier fighter. I genuinely don't know why the population was so low or what the main fort was at war with cause I never got attacked.

  • @DderwenWyllt
    @DderwenWyllt Год назад +270

    The local Elves:
Elf 1: "Dwarves have built a settlement nearby"
Elf 2: "Have you gone mad, there are no mountains in our Elven Kingdom"
Elf 1: "That was true, but they built a mountain to live in"
Elf 2: "Oh that is awful news, if Dwarves can build mountains no where will be safe from them."
Elf 1: "It is fine, the wise Elven Elders have opened a portal to take us way back in time before the Dwarves were on this continent, we will have to live underground for a few centuries as the continent is made entirely out of mountains".
Elf 2: "Thank the stars, I couldn't bear living next to those Dwarves"
And so the Elves travelled back in time and lived for a spell underground beneath the mountainous continent, unbeknownst to them, they had travelled too far back in time and would spend the next few millennia living and mining underground.
During this time, some Elves became shorter, stouter and therefore less likely to suffer mining accidents, the ones that didn't adapt to living underground decided to leave and live back on the surface as they grew to dislike their shorter cousins.
Over the millennia, the shorter Elves became known as Dwarves, their extensive mining of the mountainous continent meant that entire mountain ranges were terraformed into vast fields and grasslands, eventually with no mountains left to mine they began building their skyscrapers once more and the Elves once again fled back in time unknowingly repeating the loop once again.

Idea/challenge: sea fortress; build in the middle of the sea with no permanent connection to the land. Find a sea frozen in winter, dig into the ice, build your fort before the sea melt. Completely secure halt the year and can be feed with automated fishing by turning a floor in a fishing net.

The ages do in fact have meanings. You can find the info on all of them on the wiki, but the relevant one is that moving from the world's initial state (Age of Myths) to an Age of Legends means that roughly a third of the world's great monsters (dragons, titans, forgotten beasts and the like) have been slain. Next would be the Age of Heroes, then ages of Powers (noted by having 3, 2, or just one great and powerful monster(s) left).

Fun Fact: You can grow aboveground plants on any tile as long as at one point it has been exposed to the sun. Dwarf Fortress shoots beams from the top of the map vertically on each tile. Any tile hit by one becomes aboveground, any tile not hit is cavern. This means that you can never grow any undeground plants in a tile if it has ever been exposed to the sun, but also that you needn't give a flying toss about sunlight. This is especially useful if you come into possession of very useful aboveground seeds, like sun berries, whip vines (both used for the production of really nice, high value food and booze and, in the case of whip vines, the best flour), rope reed (linen, booze and paper) and hemp (textiles and paper from the leaves, edible seeds and flour and oil for soap from the seeds.) Effectively, you can make greenhouses out of solid stone with no natural light and plants will happily grow within

I play Adventurer Mode with AdvFort mod, and managed to force new stairways to exceed the z-level limit on the map. I found that temperatures at those levels are so low that all of your possessions will start to degrade from freezing, even steel and divine metal. If you don't get back down quickly enough, you will freeze to death. In fact, you'll continue freezing after getting back to moderate temperatures, so if you don't retreat quick enough, you can still freeze to death hundreds of ticks after getting back.

    >Blob of fire just goes down instantly
I had a Humanoid of Fire spawn in my cavern layer once, it just stood in the infinite water and made infinite steam, killing most things that tried to get close
Eventually I managed to bait it out of the water and it died in one hit
Things made of Fire have no defence

Were you able to build up past z lvl 59? i built a Pyramid and 59 is the cap for me, it turned out great, but the dwarfs are more dangerous towards themselves than any goblin siege. I've had over 20 dwarfs killed from melee brawls in the tavern. Also, if you build a few cage traps in front of your drawbridge you can capture hydras and you can make a drawbridge going down to the caverns, so you don't have to worry about forgotten beast. And prepare for all those visitors that are going to be coming in stealing your shit or intimidating your dwarfs to steal it for them. Enjoy you're stuff, and looking forward to the next.

Idea: An Actual Fortress. Must belong to a warring civilization with the ultimate goal of destroying that civilization's enemies. Ideally the fortress location would be one that would logically serve to guard against the enemy and/or serve as a staging ground from which to attack.

How about a wall fortress? You build above ground and can only expand sideways - either only west-east or only north-south, creating a very thick wall in the landscape that gets longer the bigger your fortress is

All I can say is, what if you made it go wider, building up the part that has the hospital unti it reaches the tol and doing the same with everywhere else gradually to ticken the tower? Also a few floors below where the staircase moves to the side and you can set up a line of defence for any incoming beasts.

Steam Dorf Fort looks like everything I didn't want from a GUI update
The tileset and pallet reminds me of every other pixel art indie game, expecially the graphical update to Realm Grinder
Wonder if there's a common ancestor in some free asset library people modify for their needs
Requiring mouse input for a lot of interactions seems way slower than keyboard shortcuts, and the lack of a Dwarf Therapist feature seems like it'd make labor management a nightmare
Not that DT is really a point in Classic's favor, being a third party program
I personally struggle to tell what's actually going on with this particular tileset, though that's more because I'm used to the phoebus tileset.
Oh well, Classic is still available for those who prefer it, and I hope the steam version gets worked on more

Your narration style is, as always, excellent and makes me want more. But the effort you put into pronouncing all of these names is a cut above, even so. Great stuff! Question, though - is it... Entirely normal to have this many Forgotten Beasts show up at your settlement, this quickly? Just how forgetful ARE these Dwarves (and Humans, and Elves, and such I suppose...)

A huge, POISONOUS dragon thing? I'm not saying that that shouldn't be the case, but it is a little bizarre, and you should be scared of whatever forced that species of dragon to evolve poison.
