The original gun shot noises were the best! Especially during the flashback sequence when the other terminator was wreaking havoc with that giant cannon machine gun.
lol I grew up always with those original sounds, I don’t miss them, but it is nostalgic to hear them again, but I won’t watch the movie that way anymore
The first Terminator is my favorite of the franchise. It's a great combo of action, sci fi, and horror. Those scenes in the factory where the T-800 is hunting Kyle and Sarah are scary to this day.
You failed to mention that the highlight of this movie is it has the ORIGINAL MONO MIX that has the original sound effects and everything!! That alone makes it worth picking it up!!
I’ve always compared it to a slasher film, although I wouldn’t actually call it one. Cameron took a lot of the tropes and turned them into something new. You’ve got the emotionless killer (using guns instead of melee weapons) the young insecure woman being hunted, you’ve got the killer POV, the police that don’t believe there’s a killer, and a big showdown that requires some resourcefulness to defeat him. Pretty much if you set the film on a school campus and took away the guns you’d call it a slasher film.
I think this 4K transfer is incredible. Superb clarity and detail. Rich colors and deep blacks. I couldn’t detect any smoothness/DNR on their faces. Just a natural look with wonderful detail. And Linda Hamilton has never looked more gorgeous. One of the best 4Ks I’ve seen seen this year.
The Terminator makes sense... You just need to wrap your head around the idea that the events of the first film aren't the first time they have happened. We are coming into the time loop after John Connor has been created already. The first time Skynet blew up the world there was no John Connor. They just haven't made the correct prequel movie explaining how they got there and based on the last few Terminator movies they should just stay away.
I saw one and two fist weekend it was released, and the first one was a game changer and blew everybody's mind.. The second was great, but you knew what you were going to get, and it was super commercialized.... Yes, I'm old and I think One is a surprising masterpiece that caught everyone off guard...I lived through the greatest films and time for cinema going to see the greatest films ever made in the theatre for the first time... I love that my first film in a theatre was Halloween... I also love that most of the great physical media shows/guys love my Generation X and love all the horror films from my time the best... I makes me feel good and that you guys want to relive my generations' films and music, which gives me so much Nostalgia listening to you Christian....You, Garrett, Deadpit and Piz with a dash of Tobatto are the best....
Dolby is not the same as Dolby Atmos. You need to have a sound bar or speaker set up that shares compatibility with the Atmos feature on your tv. That is the only way you will be able to experience theater quality surround sound.
He was involved in the restoration process. It was done by Park Road Post along with The Abyss, Titanic, Aliens and True Lies. The studios can’t release his films on streaming or Blu-ray without his sign off.
I legit think this is a result of them discovering how to more appropriately parameterize the ML tools they used. Over time, these things are a work in progress that are only bound to improve over time. Plus maybe a different team of people that are just better at using them. The grain is present but very light compared to before, so it's likely a combination of scrubbing and reapplying grain similar to the AV1 Grain Synthesis algorithms, just done really well. Terminator is a really grainy film yet this 4K is quite clean with light grain, so they might not've done "DNR" as we've known it but they definitely did something..yet it looks amazing nonetheless. Easily a 9/10 pq imo
I call T1 a Cyberpunk Halloween. Its not only my favorite Terminator movie. Its my favorite movie of all time. I ordered the same one you did and absolutely love it. My theory on the Dick Miller scene... the gun that Arny asks for is the only thing that can kill him. And he asked so he can find out if its there in that time.
They also corrected the bluescreen bleed when Sarah and Kyle close the factory door on the Terminator - and also dead Kyle's twitching eyelid when they close the bodybag :)
I really enjoy the first four honestly but the original is the best hands down. It’s got no filler, amazing story, perfect pacing and soaked in atmosphere. Plus Kyle Reese is my favorite character. The sequel is rightfully seen as a masterpiece and it is for sure. But it wouldn’t be as impactful as it was without the groundwork the first film laid out.
I understand the slasher discussions surrounding terminator. Terminator is Michael Sarah is Laurie Reese is Loomis Best way I've heard it explained before, it's basically science fiction Halloween.
The 40th Anniversary restoration from a 4K film scan of the 35mm negative and a new Dolby Atmos mix with final sound and picture approved by director James Cameron. Presented by Park Circus with thanks to MGM. Post House: Park Road Post, Colourist: Tashi Trieu, Sound Mixer for Atmos: Mike Hedges
I think the decrepency in quality for Cameron movies falls into the camera types, lenses used and whether film/digital. Avatar looks great because it's shot on digital and basically made for digital from the ground up.
The Avatar movies in 4k were excellent transfers, especially the original. My favorite Terminator is T2 but I've always been a big fan of the original, too.
I love both this and T-2, but I give a very slight edge to the original. I’m definitely getting this, preferably steelbook to match my T-2 one, but probably not until after Christmas.
Regarding the whole "slasher" thing... Really The Terminator is more of a romantic sci-fi noir action thriller than a horror/slasher film (though the elements are still there). The love story between Sarah and Kyle is deeply baked into the fabric of the film's plot and is the focal point of the fixed time loop the movie takes place in, and as such "romance" is probably the most fitting descriptor for the film alongside the other tags I featured.
The Blu-ray disc costs them about a dollar or less as most of the BD price is mastering (already done), licencing (already done) packaging (included in the 4K cost), and transport (included in the 4K cost... and going up) so removing it isn't going to lower the production/sale cost. It's only people moaning about getting Blu-ray they don't want without realising it'll make no overall difference that have caused distributors to do remove it (except for steelbooks because they don't want to alienate steelbook collectors who haven't gone to 4K yet) whilst keeping the price the same, and basically the complainers are reaping what they sow and have messed it up for people who liked that extra BD copy for the bedroom or lending out. Same thing happened with 3D TV moaners who said they didn't want 3D capable TVs because it added so much to the price. The manufacurers next range of releases dropped it but, as they were adding new 4K features, nobody noticed that in fact the 3D electronics actually only added $20 so all they did through ignorance of costings was take away 3D capability from those who *did* want it without saving any money themselves... because they _perceived_ they were better off. All that said; thanks for your thoughts and review after giving it a watch; good info. 👍
You can view the Kyle giving birth to Sarah is alteration in the timeline cause by the future events set by Skynet and John and that John original father in a different prior timeline before Judgement Day and the war in the past before the events in T1, T2 was somebody else not Kyle, Thank God Cameron didn't fuck this up for it's 40th anniversary, This film is my favorite and I do put it above T2 and it's kind of a slasher because of it's tone, it's noir atmosphere and the Terminator hunting down it's target relentlessly to terminate, Good review btw, cheers
Fans of the Terminator should check out the movie “Streets” (1990) directed by Katt Shea Ruben and starring Christina Applegate. It’s like “The Terminator” without the sci-fi and time travel elements.
Both Terminators are masterpieces so I think for anyone to call either one better than the other is ok with me. Both kick so much ass !! Me T2 is better but I can agree with anyone who’s say part 1 is better.
The John Connor that is born from this Kyle Reece is 3rd generation. The original john Connor was not Kyle's kid. The first Kyle came back and knocked up Sara and gave her all this information that was able to raise the 2nd gen John to become as good as the original. That John new up knowing Kyle was his father and send back the Klye we all know and love to start a new cycle.
I’m going against the crowd here. I’ve got Terminator on DVD, and I refuse to upgrade to bluray. It’s a gritty movie, and the lower resolution reinforces that. Now T2 is a different story . . .
The time paradox does not ruin it for me, because at least the loop is closed in a uroborian chicken and the egg argument sort of way. Tenet had far worse paradoxes, like how does a bullet end up in the head of a living person? And why touch the brake to start a car?
Why is everyone saying James Cameron wasn’t involved? He supervised the 4K restoration with Park Road Post and use that same restoration process with all of his other 4K titles. The studios can’t release his films on streaming or Blu-ray without his sign off on it which is why some of the 4K titles took so long to come out. The Terminator 4K looks good because that’s the way James Cameron wanted the restoration process to look.
When you talk about a classic like Jaws 3, it's obvious that the acting chops weren't honed in at Juilliard..so I love the nightmare that we received in 4k.Regarding Terminator,I would say it deserves nothing less than a 10..4ks aren't consistent enough for me.These blockbuster movies are getting jobbed .
I can't comment on the visuals as I have no eyesight I'm totally blind, but the Atmos mix is IMHO a bit of a mess. Gunshots are now more muffled/quieter, some audio cues have been removed, the whole mix sounds thin. Which is to say there is bass and there is top end, but middle punch is really lacking. They have also done that horrible thing which was done in Aliens 4k, where in certain loud bangs and gunshots have had a bass boom put over the top of them. Often one which is not in sync. You can hear this when he fires the larger single shot weapons, it's most notable when Rease shoots the terminator in the night club multiple times in rapid succession. There are also at least to my ears, some true audio mistakes in the mix. For example the coughing in the shelter in the future now has a weird echo delay on it for no reason. It should not be there. Some of the music cues are a mix of UK and US audio, by which I mean some parts of the music drones are pitched lower or higher than the music they lead into. This seems to be the case in the 1st dream future war scene near the start. It's not holy bad, it's just also not very good. My impression is they worked hard on the opening future war scene which does IMHO sound really good,, they added the sliding metal sound back into the credits which people complained about when it was removed for the DVD/blu ray, but the rest feels a bit slapdash. if they took as much time on the audio as I guess they did on the visuals, they could have done a lot more with it.
To be honest, the plots in Cameron’s films often lack coherence, which is why he’s sometimes seen as a B-movie director with blockbuster budgets. The Terminator is fantastic, but it’s more akin to an episode of The Twilight Zone than to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Regardless of how good it is, this makes at least the 4th release this year that I'm interested in to get an updated release where the blu ray is either omitted or it contains the old blu ray. As such, I'll have to pass.
I’ll just settle the debate terminator 1 is superior to terminator 2 simply because terminator 1 has a amazing lead a Amazing female protagonist and a amazing villain terminator 2 has a great lead a great female protagonist no great villain also I disagree with t1 not making since I think it makes just enough to work but terminator 2 is the one that makes no sense according to everything time travel movie related we know when u stop the past it changes the present when Arnold sacrificed himself in t2 he should have disappeared and so should Sarah Connor’s kid but they don’t also t1 is a slasher give Arnold a nife and it’s not a argument
The Terminator definitely has slasher elements but I wouldn't call it a slasher movie. For me The Terminator is the superior movie, rotten tomatoes can never be wrong lol. On this occasion I definitely agree with em. And the 4k looks great, anyone who says otherwise is delusional.
Terminator is easily a masterpiece. No question about it.
I literally couldn’t believe WB included the Original audio track. It was an immediate purchase based on this alone. Those original gun shot noises❤️
The original gun shot noises were the best! Especially during the flashback sequence when the other terminator was wreaking havoc with that giant cannon machine gun.
Saw complaints when it initially wasn't listed to be included. Guess they listened
It's a miracle! Don't have to dust off the VHS anymore (though I still will).
lol I grew up always with those original sounds, I don’t miss them, but it is nostalgic to hear them again, but I won’t watch the movie that way anymore
So are you saying that the old gun sound fx are included in the original audio track?
The first Terminator is my favorite of the franchise. It's a great combo of action, sci fi, and horror. Those scenes in the factory where the T-800 is hunting Kyle and Sarah are scary to this day.
Yeah. The horror part is what makes the movie. Take those parts out and it's not quite the same.
"What plants the seed for this?"
Kyle Reese **badum tsss**
One of the BEST 4K releases ever! I couldn't believe the outstanding clarity and color and the awesome sound. 10 out of 10!
I'm just happy to hear is not as bad as true lies
I heard James Cameron wasn't involved with this restoration so that could explain how it turned out pretty good!
My guess is that that rose out of people assuming so just because it looks good.
@@Chrisratatayeah lol as if James Cameron wouldn’t be involved in one of his films 🤣 it’s simply the progression the technology to me more then likely
Avatar and Titanic look fantastic. I’ll have to wait till I get my copy of Terminator in a few days.
The original Terminator is the best, no question. It’s simple, gritty, and hits hard with awesome action and a killer story.
In the year 2024, the basement dwellers rose up and struck back against the war of the machines. No fate.
There is a theory that John's father is actually the guy she was seeing that canceled their date.
Yeah Bone with his porsche lol
For me T1 is best in the franchise. Raw and brutal. I understand why people think T2 is better, but it’s just too Hollywood for me.
110%...
Terminator 2 was an independent film, despite its $100 million price tag. In my opinion, both films compliment each other perfectly.
T2 is too Hollywood? I would say both T1 and T2 are the best movies in the franchise.
@@danielsiljeholm I never said I didn’t like T2. But out of the two, I prefer T1.
T2 is an R rated action family film. T1 is a cyberpunk horror slasher.
You failed to mention that the highlight of this movie is it has the ORIGINAL MONO MIX that has the original sound effects and everything!! That alone makes it worth picking it up!!

nope they all are dumb logic haha
@KenjiEspresso you must be a joy to be around....
Imagine of the slip cover had the original cinema poster. That would be delicious.
😊😊😊😊😊 good review.

Great review, buddy. I think the regular edition looks better than the steelbook.
100%

The first one is the best for me. Love the gritty, b-movie horror vibes.
To my knowledge, Cameron had nothing to do with this restoration. Why? No idea. But that's why it looks so good.
I don't think he really cares about this movie anymore, he seems embarrassed by it from recent interviews.

Hey only what ya see on the wall ok pal. CHH make it do what it do. Great channel.
Predator is more of a slasher movie than Terminator. One-by-one deaths... secluded setting... masked killer... bladed weapon...
Terminator 2 is the best one, look how much special effects they put to this movie its mind blowing

Got my copy yesterday it was impressive. They even CGI'ed the blade onto the scalpel when The Terminator cuts out his eye.
They also corrected the bluescreen bleed when Sarah and Kyle close the factory door on the Terminator - and also dead Kyle's twitching eyelid when they close the bodybag :)

Get a 5.1.4 Atmos soundbar. It's totally worth it, long soundbar with 2 Atmos speakers, a subwoofer and L/R surround speakers with Atmos speakers
I’d rather have a proper surround system, with speakers behind me as well as in front of me.
The Avatar movies in 4k were excellent transfers, especially the original.

I'd call Terminator Techno-slasher. Love T2, but for my money nothing beats Arnold's T-800 as the bad guy.
The UK one has a Blu Ray as well as 4K
It does? Keep that peasant material away from me. 😂

I'd say The Terminator is more like a high end exploitation/ grindhouse flick, than a slasher.
The time travel thing isn't a paradox, so the John that Rece makes with Sarah isn't the same John that Rece knew.
