I think mine, and most people's issue with the use of AI is, there's absolutely no reason to use it. Scan a well-kept negative of the film, do your minor color corrections and sh1t and stick it on the disc. There's no reason to hit the auto-dial button on AI and just let it fly. Give people the film the way it looked when it released. You wouldn't get a can of clear coat spray paint gloss and shoot it on top of the Mona Lisa to give it a slick, shiny appearance, so there's no reason to do it with movies. Furthermore, the James Cameron hate typically comes more from the comments he's made about his fans. Anyone who criticizes him gets, basically, reduced to a basement dwelling virgin in his eyes. What a baby who can't handle a little constructive criticism. The only thing people ever asked of him was to release his movies as-is because we loved them the way they were. What a crime, I guess. LOL!
I hear what you're saying but have you ever made a movie? Does any of us out here know firsthand what shape the negative is in? Do we know what lighting conditions were on the day? Do we know what filming conditions were? Do we know what the photochemical processing did to each frame of film? Do we know what the restoration looked like upon first completion? How would anyone know he just "pushed the button on AI and let it fly?" - as someone who makes and edits movies, I promise that wasn't done- there would be an awful lot tell-tale signs if it was...and honestly, I don't remember Cameron commenting about fans very much until they started attacking everything he did... If you haven't watched it, I'd really encourage you to watch my video on "why most 4k reviews are wrong" where I go into technical aspects of filming and 4ks - everything from grain to dnr, to processing and more!!
@@AVAPopCulture I know nothing. It's just, when you see so many, almost, perfect transfers come out that aren't slathering AI and other stuff over it, it makes you wonder why they can't all do it.
@TooBokoo I whole heartedly encourage you to watch my video on why most 4k reviews are wrong...it may answer some of your questions and I may do a follow up to elaborate further but it is pretty detailed but easy to understand even if you don't have technical knowledge
@@MarCuseus again, 3840 x 2160 pixels is UHD (the common vernacular is 4k for that)... The “details“ are clearly AI. Letters in the background (boards, panels, plates) look weird as hell, sharper than the rest, they shouldn‘t be that sharp. And you can’t read it, looks like sharpened AI nonsense.
LOL tell me how you know the "details" are "clearly AI?... you can't because you dont... Ive shot, edited, colored, cut film, processed film etc etc for over 20 years - there is nothing in those details that couldnt exist in the original 35mm film that had the ability to exceed 4k resolution
@@AVAPopCulture Absolutely! Back in 2008 until the early 2010s I was pretty much the music equivalent of these people, until I realized that a lot of masters/remasters of CDs are just different, and to try not to spend too much time comparing them unless something really wows me, or sounds like total dogshit. lol
I took another look through some scenes, side by side with a few previous transfers and am pretty sure this film went through a similar process as Cameron's other films. I'm not complaining but just saying how it is. I quite liked The Abyss in 4K. I noticed scene's where Arnold and Linda's faces would go smooth and regain detail, very similar to The Abyss. I just think they went much lighter on the grain removal side of things. This won't be film preservationists favorite, but in terms of the overall viewing experience, it really is great. I have some older DVDs to look back on to see what the film used to look like.
... if they have slightly too much light on their face for a few seconds compared to the rest of the scene and they used any DNR or anything to even slightly clean up the noise, it can account for that... I understand Cameron's frustration... Ive made and edited films for over 2 decades and now anyone with a 4k player and youtube is an expert using buzzwords to say what was done wrong - not saying that is you, but it is impossible to please people when they are looking for any split second or frame to use buzzwords they dont fully understand to complain about...
@@Tidbitkid LOL yeah, ummm you sir are incorrect...from someone who makes, edits and has worked with film in professional movies, the resolution of the film used 100% matters when it comes to restoration and transfer... you are absolutely incorrect... If the film had a 2k max resolution when shooting then artificial upscaling would be required...but the 35mm film had/has an inherent resolution capability that exceeds 4k resolution...thus, when being restored, it does not have to be upscaled to meet 4k resolution, that resolution needs to be brought out of the film
@@Tidbitkid LOL they are connected dude... you are missing that point...the film stock and its characteristics are only part of it...how a film was lit, shot, the lenses used, the camera used, the weather conditions, how it was stored, etc etc all play a massive part
@Tidbitkid lol it is really hilarious when people who have absolutely no clue what they are talking about try to Google search something and regurgitate it as if they have any clue of what they are talking about...there is nothing about this that is like a "video presentation" please go back to your mom's basement
Kidding me? After he said I was a loser in my mom's basement (I actually own my own home and am in my own office), he is lucky I paid for it rather than just torrenting it.
Yeah, we're so lucky Cameron allowed us to throw more money at him and his three mansions. All hail this man for throwing the peasants some crumbs. Jesus.
T1 is in my top 3 favourite films of all time. I've owned this film on every format and can't wait for my 4k copy to arrive. The re-mastered blu-ray from 2013/2014 time was absolutely superb, so if this 4K is better than that, it must be stunning. I'm really curious to hear what the weapons sound like on the mono track too. Many people have mentioned the absence of the mono track in the past, and this has sparked my curiosity at appreciating this film even more from another aspect.
@andrewbrown3070 thank you! Everyone seems to want to default to "negative"... I want people to just understand from a filmmaking perspective why things may be the way they are seeing them and then just go back to enjoying movies!
Unpopular opinion: I like a bit of haziness in movies from the 80s, it just adds to the vibe for me and looks more real if that makes sense. I still got this release though because I love the franchise.
The movies where I like the haziness are the first two Halloween movies and the original TV version of Salem's Lot. Maybe the first Friday the 13th and Child's Play too.
the film grain complaints generally come from the film preservationists. they are valid complaints and i think if companies released completely unaltered versions of these films along side the cleaned up versions, no one would complain. thing is though, for a general viewing experience, stuff like this are very nice. you might even appreciate a lot of the effort that went into some of them. it blows my mind what they managed to do with the abyss. looks great, even if it's not what it looked like in 1989.
ah, I have seen just as many people complaining that too much original grain was left (see Weird Science) because a lot of people are too used to the digital look.....having made films and edited films, I am really appreciative of the work that is done and that is part of the reason why I do these videos -I want other people to understand and appreciate the amount of work that is done and enjoy the films
@AVAPopCulture The amount of effort put into them get's understated a lot. I definetly enjoy them. This and The Abyss look fantastic. I still think unaltered versions should be available regardless. I don't think George Lucas would have gotten any flack for the special editions if he had released the original cuts as well.
I should have said, the son's FATHER coming back is a great storyline!!! I always get this movie confused in my head with the Kyle Reese and John Connor mess of it all. 😂😂😂
@salvatorecarapazza248 thank you so much! I love hearing that! I don't claim to know everything but if I can share what I know from my experience, then I love it! And thank you for using the link!! I really appreciate that 🙏
You talking about the reflection in his eye makes me really want Chasing Amy to come out on 4K. I love catching the crew in reflections, and the Chasing Amy rain scene is one of my favorite ones. I would love to see that in 4K
@@TonyThompson1981 I always love little things like that! I've picked up so much stuff like that over the years when editing because you see the same clips so much over and over again!
In particular, I’m just trying to see what they did with the Atmos with this movie, I have the 2014 4K master 1080 P disc that they did, which, from what I know was the last transfer on standard Blu-ray so far since this new 4K Disc upgrade.
Just watched it, i was really impressed. The Atmos is really really good for a 40 year old low budget movie. Nice scanning effects in the terminator view, HK´s passing by overhead and overall rich sound compared to the blu ray. Just the terminator "heartbeat" in the beginning while arnold arives sounds a bit tinny, and later while kyle gives the gun to sarah in the tiki motel you could hear the closing door just in the center speaker in lower quality.
@ yeah, I was wondering what they were gonna do with the Atmos, wasn’t sure if he was gonna add new sound effects or go off the old late 90s they created for the 5.1 DVD/Blu-ray on up to fill in this Atmos track. There is only one scene that bugs me out of all the sound mixes. I’ve heard from Dolby to DTS, the one scene where Kyle is waking up from the nightmare sequence and he cox his shotgun quick, you can hear it clearly on the mono track but doesn’t seem to sound correct at all on any of the 5.1 masters. I have the old mono track on laser disk and VHS.
@thischannelisdeleted instead of looking for stuff that only confirms your bias, how about watching my video "why most 4k reviews are wrong" and learning something from someone who has directed, filmed, edited, and color graded, movies for over 2 decades and has had to do all of those same things with film
@ I watched it, everything you said confirms True Lies is terrible, DNR, color grading, etc… and you didn’t even mention the AI. Not sure what your point in this video was by saying most people are wrong about it.
@thischannelisdeleted because you have no understanding of why or how anything is the way it is because all you know is internet buzzwords and the idea that "it is AI, and it sucks trust me bro"
, So you have the Blu-ray version, just was wondering, which transfer of the Blu-ray version you had that you’re comparing it with and, is it this transfer that is particularly more detailed, and it’s not just the 4K effect of the disc, I wasn’t sure if they had released a standard Blu-ray version of this release or just a 4K, just trying to clarify.
All I know is that our community should be talking about the love of movies and having those fun discussions rather than just talking about the specs so much. Its almost like people forgot about the “experience of being immersed in another world for 90 minutes” to talking about grain, A.I., pixel peeping, 4k, etc. I wish people would talk about the STORY, THE JOURNEY of the characters in films, thats what I want to hear! I agree with you! Its just a shame that people want to talk about the SPECS soo much that they almost forget about why we watch movies to begin with. Im glad we have physical media and upgrades in technology, just wish people wouldn’t forget the love of seeing a film.
That's what I'm into, the experience of the movie, and the character journey. I do like how Chase shows the difference in quality between the Blu-ray and 4k though. I'm personally not super picky. I will say for some films like The Cell, the optics were such a huge part of that movie I would prefer the 4k experience. 😊
@MovieOdyssey87 10000000000% agree! That's why I try to point out stuff people may not know about filmmaking and why stuff may look like it does and that it is silly to be pixel peeping and all of that! Just enjoy the movie! I mean if it obviously looks horrific and we paid our money for it, it is understandable to be upset but just looking for tiny details to complain about is being miserable for no reason and missing the point of the joy and love of movies!
@@AVAPopCulture pixel peeping, Lol. I've never heard that term before. I like it. 😅 I'm watching a documentary from 1995 about Bonnie and Clyde and Clyde's sister is in it. Very interesting. I need to watch the movie with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. I like how they point out the difference between the urban gangsters like Capone versus the rural Midwest and southwestern gangsters like Bonnie and Clyde. The influence the gangster films in Hollywood had on the soon-to-be Hays Code. Which would last 30 + years.
Machine learning upscaling (commonly described as 'AI upscaling') is an incredible tool with impressive results. I've used topaz to upscale lower quality DVD rips from 480p to 1080p and it really impresses. With a higher quality base image like 1080p or a 4k 35mm scan there can be a case of diminishing returns (depending on which tools you use and the intensity of the effects). With a higher quality base image the argument can be made that the original native scan with only a touch of film grain corrections can be viewed as superior (many arrow releases in particular show this type of result). For anyone who dislikes the appearance of film grain, these ML/AI tools grant the ability to remove all film grain and even create intermediate frames that didn't exist producing a 60fps result! I believe what gets people a bit upset about these Cameron releases as that he is a known 'grain hater' who prefers a DNR pass that gives a cleaner, more digital, modern look. Clearly this is not to everyone's taste but there's no doubt the results produced by this approach can be impressive in side by side comparisons. If I could, I'd ask that any restoration project released two 'flavours', a native scan of the 35mm original with minimal DNR usage, and a balls to the wall ultimate DNR digital AI version that pops nicely on that brand new 85inch mini led TV. But hey, someone has to pay a restoration team to do that and so here we are😂 In either case what a great time to be alive and enjoy these cool films at such high fidelity.
I just rewatched T2 last night and I hadn't seen it in years. It was always my favorite, but after seeing it again I have to say T1 is my favorite now. 😊 Taste changes with age.
Hi Chase. Thanks again for an awesome, honest 4K review. Like you, I am a huge Terminator fan, but I'm an even bigger Schwarzenegger and Cameron fan. Personally, my favourite movie of all time is T2. I was lucky enough to watch the 40th anniversary 4K remaster of this transfer at the cinema in South Africa. I thought the remaster looked very good. I did pre-order the 4K but had to cancel it due to finances. However, I do plan to pick up the standard 4K as soon as I’m able to-hopefully payday. Keep up the good, honest, and wholesome reviews, and I look forward to the new T2 remaster that was announced along with ‘The Terminator.’ I guess that's coming in 2025, but at least we know it can't look worse than the one we got a few years ago, which I do have. I didn’t think it looked too bad, although I'm still not sure about the greenish colour tint, apparently due to the 3D version being used as the master, if my understanding is correct.
thank you! I appreciate the kind words and I will try to keep the solid content coming! I love T2 as well but yeah, the issues they ran into with it are mostly from using the 3d version!
I'm looking forward to getting my steelbook through the post Monday from HMV. It's been a long time coming, and i can't wait to watch it again. The 4K cinema rerelease was a phenomenal print.
Uk steelbook is identical apart from we get two discs - 4k + Blu-ray but no digital code. Agree with your review - this is a great release of an iconic movie 🎥 👍🏻👍🏻
I just watched the 4k so I’m returning to this video. Absolutely loved it. Amazing picture and sound. I can’t imagine being unhappy with this transfer. Also your dialogue here couldn’t be more perfect talking about those who pixel peep and pause the picture trying to find where a scene may be enhanced by AI…..”If that’s what you’re doing, you’re in this for the wrong reason, and you’re setting yourself up to be fucking miserable” i literally yelled from my chair 😂
LOL thanks my friend! and it is true! I've taken some nasty heat in these comments from the pixel peepers and those who are determined to be miserable and hate everything...forget that fact that you know, I have actually worked with film and movies professionally, they dont care -they want to hate and be miserable and if that is the mindset, then why even bother with watching movies!?!? I grew up having to put aluminum foil on rabbit ears to get a decent picture and we have folks out here pausing and blowing up the screen to see if something in the distant background for a split second is something they can complain about LOL..it is unreal!! I am glad you liked it! I cant wait to get an OLED and re-watch it!!!
@@AVAPopCulture DUDE! I forgot all about the foil on rabbit ears trick but that was the only way I could pick up certain channels. I lived way out in the sticks, too far from town to get cable and had a 10 inch black & white tv. It was a real struggle to find something to watch. LOL They were always the best channels too, like they would always have the best scary movies, late night pro wrestling and generally anything & everything that the major networks wouldn't show.
It's an automated AI 2K upscale of a wrongly color-timed transfer of a 4K scan from 2013 with lots of DNR applied and then fake grain added. This is literally what it is.
I can't comment on the visuals as I have no eyesight I'm totally blind, but the Atmos mix is IMHO a bit of a mess. Gunshots are now more muffled/quieter, some audio cues have been removed, the whole mix sounds thin. Which is to say there is bass and there is top end, but middle punch is really lacking. They have also done that horrible thing which was done in Aliens 4k, where in certain loud bangs and gunshots have had a bass boom put over the top of them. Often one which is not in sync. You can hear this when he fires the larger single shot weapons, it's most notable when Rease shoots the terminator in the night club multiple times in rapid succession. There are also at least to my ears, some true audio mistakes in the mix. For example the coughing in the shelter in the future now has a weird echo delay on it for no reason. It should not be there. Some of the music cues are a mix of UK and US audio, by which I mean some parts of the music drones are pitched lower or higher than the music they lead into. This seems to be the case in the 1st dream future war scene near the start. It's not holy bad, it's just also not very good. My impression is they worked hard on the opening future war scene which does IMHO sound really good,, they added the sliding metal sound back into the credits which people complained about when it was removed for the DVD/blu ray, but the rest feels a bit slapdash. if they took as much time on the audio as I guess they did on the visuals, they could have done a lot more with it.
I cant comment on the ATMOS because I do not have a complete ATMOS setup however, it does also include the original mono sound in addition to the atmos
The 40th Anniversary restoration from a 4K film scan of the 35mm negative and a new Dolby Atmos mix with final sound and picture approved by director James Cameron. Presented by Park Circus with thanks to MGM. Post House: Park Road Post, Colourist: Tashi Trieu, Sound Mixer for Atmos: Mike Hedges
I'm so sick of hearing how bad the Terminator head is. No one b***hes about the way Ashs severed head looks in Alien when Ripley disconnects him. I mean, The Terminator is low-budget
Awesome to hear! Terminator 2 was a mess of a 4K and as great of a film as that is, THIS, the original Terminator is one of my favorite films of all time. No comparison. Because of the problems on some of these Cameron 4Ks, I haven't ordered this yet. Definitely will have to now. Hopefully I can snag that steelbook because WTF were they thinking with that cover on the standard? lmao. Fantastic detailed content as always my brother. Hit you up soon.
I am just waiting for some comparisons before buying otherwise I will wait for a later release. From what I am hearing it is better than the blu ray but I think a lot of people are biased towards the 90's VHS and DVDs, back then they use a lot of magenta for the color timing possibly because of the trend with consumer CRTs and LCDs being too blue and desire for natural flesh tones on them, like for example, Nightmare on Elm Street takes the cake for its DVD magenta push, you calibrate your TV properly and you will notice the flesh tones are off. Honestly, the movies in 35mm never looked like that.
Hmmm. I think the pixel 943 from the top left and 656 from the left has the wrong color timing on frame 3673. Dont you agree? Must be the worst release ever!!! Lol Thanks for reviewing this. Am still waiting for mine eventhough I pre-ordered it within 3 mins after it was available. Estimated delivery to me is now november 22nd… amazon UK… Anyhow looking foreard to see it!
The first "Terminator" movie was pretty good, but I'm definitely not a huge enough fan to go out and purchase another copy. Even if it's in 4k with special features and whatnot I'm satisfied enough with the copy I already own that in no way could I ever possibly justify spending the money, particularly with how incredibly poor I am.
To me it looks great. People hate to hate. It don’t make sense to me. Even jaws 3 I had to pause to find the ai and even then it took me forever to find it. There may be some in the terminator but it looks better than ever. I’m happy.
@@williamdriver1959 I agree! I don't understand taking something we love and actively trying to be negative...I will always give my honest opinion even if I think something is subpar but seeking first to be negative is crazy to me

People are so hung-up on film grain it's hilarious. Well, I'm glad it's not paste looking. From what I've been hearing James Cameron was not involved in the transfer but it's not concrete, it's pure speculation at this point. Can't wait for my two copies.
@markgreene1162 It is ridiculous to me lol and what makes it even more funny. Is that most people have no idea How or why grain exists And how or why it would be gotten rid of etc et cetera etc... They just want to complain.
People are hung up on grain because it's the literal information that makes up the actual image you're seeing. Film is composed of film grain... That's what gives you the picture. Start scrubbing away the grain, and you're scrubbing away detail. I can't believe people still don't understand this most basic, fundamental thing in 2024.
"It has become fashionable and trendy to hate on James Cameron in anything he does".... that's because most people are followers and can't form their own opinion.
Hopefully mine arrives tomorrow ( 4k steelbook uk) really looking forward to it, so pleased we got the atmos upgrade! To me it's so dissaponting when films like , predator, alien , t2 were cheaped out on the audio. The fact this has an excellent 4k is a bonus! Give me the atmos 🔊!
ah! you should watch some of my other reviews where I go into detail about the reasons why some have atmos and some may not... if they only have the original audio tacks from the master - (this would be 2 audio files, one with Music and Effects on it and one with dialogue on it) and they do not have the original "stem files" that created them (that means each individual sound effect - like thunder claps, shots fired, cars crashing) etc etc they likely cant do an atmos track without throwing away all of the old audio from the music and effects track and completely re-creating all sound design for the movie because those music and effects have been compressed together into 1 track and for atmos, they need to be pulled apart and placed on different mix lines to come out of the appropriate speakers for atmos...
Hey there, thanks for the info. BTW: Didn’t know that JC is in the 4K business. But then again, if he IS he would be in every business by definition, wouldn’t he? 😂 Good to know though, that this is a solid release even if it‘s thin on special features. 👍

I just want to be able to escape every day B. S. ... And jump into a fantasy world and just lose myself in the storyline... Great brake down, brother... I'LL BE BACK!!!
They digitally add a lot of film grain nowadays today, you know. Not saying that's the case here, but there are some people that suspect so. Overall, I'm hearing the movie looks better than expected. Cameron apparently used Park Road Post's A.I. tools again, but not as extremely as Aliens and True Lies
Why would you digitally add film grain to a movie shot on 35mm film that already has it? It stands to reason, if anything, they'd just take out as much as they want and leave the rest
@@AVAPopCulture i don't think it's used often, if at all for discs, but there is a compression technique that strips grain to make the underlying layer easier to compress efficiently during the encode, but characterizes that grain statistically to reapply it during the decode. When it comes down to it, a huge part of digital restoration and preservation is just math (AI or not) which requires an element of finesse on the part of the compressionists and preservationists.
@@AVAPopCulture @chrisjfox8715 Exactly. Sometimes film grain has been intentionally or unintentionally stripped due to the process. Cameron once again hired Peter Jackson's Park Road Post facility which is known to use A.I. tools. He seems to be one of those filmmakers that wants his classic films shot in 35mm to look as if they were shot today, digitally. Sometimes film grain is digitally added back in sometimes it's not. Many also suspect that one of the reasons why Aliens and True Lies looked as terrible as they did on 4K UHD was that they were taken from dated 2K scans with all these processes added.
Lightstorm employee confirmed true lies and aliens was due to inexperience with the tech true lies and aliens where the first remasterd @ronhenriques9228 The releases of the 4k blu rays don't match the order of how they remastered the films

@Reggaebeatman first, Robocop 2 is about 6 or 7 years newer than Terminator, not older... Second, I seriously encourage you to watch my video "why most 4k reviews are wrong" - I go into all of the explanations of grain, film condition, lighting etc etc ...but bro I promise you, there isn't a serious filmmaker that has ever used the words or even thought about the words "grain structure" while filming lol...that is a fanboy buzzword that has no meaning behind it if you don't know how and why the grain is there and what could make it fluctuate in the first place ... Again, watch the video and other 4k reviews of mine... Atmos does not exist on set or during recording and I think it was toy story 3 that had the first 7.1 surround for the theater and later for atmos... When you .are a .movie and deliver it for a cinema package, you do a dialogue and an M&E or music and effects track...that means that in many cases there is only one consolidated track of audio that is blended together with all the music and effects... If that is all they have and they don't have the original stem files for the FX etc - they can't make an true atmos... because to make an atmos, they have to take individual sound fx and place them on audio track lines that didn't exist at the time to make them come out of different speakers... So again, that is just a tiny taste of what 99.9% of people on RUclips doing reviews and throwing buzzwords don't know!
Whether older or not, the age of a film is no guarantee of the state that the film prints are in and how much of those elements they have on hand. And if they're in poor enough shape then preservationists are going to be forced to make some decisions, for better or worst, in an effort to make it look its best... The tools they use to do so are perhaps less important than the skill with which they're able to wield them. Each movie is going to have its unique challenges, and each team working on them is going its strengths and weaknesses as to how they go about aiming to overcome them.
@@AVAPopCultureI was comparing Robocop 2 to True Lies....and why Robocop looks so good yet it much older film. I said Robocop 2 Laser Disk Stereo beats the Atmos....so yeah Atmos can be overrated and I dont think it works on old films. I will have a look at that vid u said though I wasn't a big fan of the Abysse look though looks like this Terminator a good one from positivecommentsso far. Saying that JC was very arrogant to say what he did, his sensitive and cant take constructive criticism. His new signature, u either love the shiny sharpened smoothed look or u don't...simple as that, we all have preferences. Ot like Some prefer artificial Domino Pizza with fake cheese ingredients flavor enhancements yet others prefer natural ingredients on Italian pizza with real ingredients.
Actually a nightmare on elm street same year film grain use is very similar same with twister Film grain difference is more noticeable with correct tv picture settings and dolby vision with 1000 nits Lately warner bros 4k remasters have had very light film grain without dnr
"Because who on Earth is doin' that?".... people living in their basements just like James Cameron said lol. I thought this 4K turned out pretty good, people need to accept these older movies on 4K are never going to look EXACTLY 100% like they did in theaters or VHS ..... it just isn't possible. These movies are just getting too old at this point, the original negatives/ prints are fading and it's hard to reconstruct what every single film looked back then color grade wise/what level of brightness they had back then. Also, the negatives could have damage to them, and they might have to do some digital tinkering to restore them.
Sad day for me as another channel I like bites the proverbial dust and praises fake grain and AI added detail and sharpness on another one of these no effort, upscaled from a 10+ year 2K scan, Cameron "4K's". I'm sure one day I'll buy this used and deeply discounted, just for the mono track really. That's all this release is worth to me. Best of luck to you. Thank you for the video and your previous work.
LOL sorry you feel that way ...care to show my your work? care to show me your background? or do you just want to be an uneducated fanb who likes to jump on the negativity train? I'll tell you like I told my students when I taught film...you better show your work if you want to argue... better back it up... "I dont like James Cameron so trust me bro it is bad" is not an argument.. I am not here to solidify your bias...I am here to give an educated assessment
Get educated kid they didn't use that watch jaws 4k restoration documentary he used the 4k di of the negative only need to use the physical negative is for damage fixed once stored on di it is all good James cameron reassured he left the film grain the previous blu ray wasn't touched only the color timing was and they didn't do basic stuff needed for film grain on releases for blu ray They already did the physical damage repair part of the process for old blu ray
@Maxxxim1 lol no sorry... and there is nothing at that 4minute mark that proves AI...also, as an editor and filmmaker, I put ZERO stock in any comparison of still photos or screen videos that you can't see the source because anyone can change the color or anything they want to in order to fit their narrative... You do understand that when you restore a 35mm film which has the inherent ability in it to be at resolutions exceeding 4k, it can bring out or mute things that were there... Extra highlights has absolutely NOTHING to do with AI or not AI...NOTHING... You say excessive saturation BUT that is color grading and has nothing to do with AI....

@@MarCuseus actually, 3840 x 2160 pixels is UHD (the common vernacular is 4k for that)... Cinematic 4k that cinema cameras use is a 4k resolution of 4096 x 2160 pixels and that is resolution standard used in the film and television industry.... so that difference is very unlikely to be seen by your eyes and is not really relevant...
@@AVAPopCulture 🤦♂4K is nothing new. And it is exactly 4096.
@@MarCuseus what is your point? and yeah, being able to watch 4k at home is still pretty new
I think mine, and most people's issue with the use of AI is, there's absolutely no reason to use it.

@AVAPopCulture Yup

Many people have mentioned the absence of the mono track in the past, and this has sparked my curiosity at appreciating this film even more from another aspect.
it sounded great! I hope you enjoy it!
Your work is top notch. Great job

Nice job, man. All great points. I appreciate your attention to detail.
That's why I still have a crt and VCR. When I'm in the mood for those vibes I pop in a VHS.
I like to keep a CRT tv and my vhs for those vibes!
I think with all the backlash over Aliens and True Lies being DNR'd, he decided to ease up on it and I see they included the original mono track too.
the film grain complaints generally come from the film preservationists. they are valid complaints and i think if companies released completely unaltered versions of these films along side the cleaned up versions, no one would complain. thing is though, for a general viewing experience, stuff like this are very nice. you might even appreciate a lot of the effort that went into some of them. it blows my mind what they managed to do with the abyss. looks great, even if it's not what it looked like in 1989.
ah, I have seen just as many people complaining that too much original grain was left (see Weird Science) because a lot of people are too used to the digital look.....having made films and edited films, I am really appreciative of the work that is done and that is part of the reason why I do these videos -I want other people to understand and appreciate the amount of work that is done and enjoy the films
@AVAPopCulture The amount of effort put into them get's understated a lot. I definetly enjoy them. This and The Abyss look fantastic. I still think unaltered versions should be available regardless. I don't think George Lucas would have gotten any flack for the special editions if he had released the original cuts as well.
Terminator is a great movie. The son coming back is a great storyline, and Linda Hamilton is perfect in it. Very '80s urban vibes which I LOVE.
I should have said, the son's FATHER coming back is a great storyline!!! I always get this movie confused in my head with the Kyle Reese and John Connor mess of it all. 😂😂😂

In particular, I’m just trying to see what they did with the Atmos with this movie, I have the 2014 4K master 1080 P disc that they did, which, from what I know was the last transfer on standard Blu-ray so far since this new 4K Disc upgrade.
@ericspalacio I don't have an atmosphere set up so I can't comment on that
Just watched it, i was really impressed.
I stopped watching when you mentioned True Lies isn’t a mess
The best feature of the 4K is finally after 20 years the original mono soundtrack is back as an option
that is a great feature for sure
, So you have the Blu-ray version, just was wondering, which transfer of the Blu-ray version you had that you’re comparing it with and, is it this transfer that is particularly more detailed, and it’s not just the 4K effect of the disc, I wasn’t sure if they had released a standard Blu-ray version of this release or just a 4K, just trying to clarify.
@@ericspalacio it was an old standard blu ray release - the other one I showed in the video!
100% this!
@benbelzer8303 agreed!! Movies mean so much more to me thajln pixel peeping the distant background of a split second of film to complain about it!
But hey, someone has to pay a restoration team to do that and so here we are😂
In either case what a great time to be alive and enjoy these cool films at such high fidelity.
I think James Cameron is a numbnuts as a person. But Terminator 1 and 2, and Aliens are amazing films.
@LittleMissGrosser I give him a lot of credit for point break too...I often separate art from the artist

👋 James Cameron hater here!
I actually liked this one. Hopefully T2 gets another shot.
@HeavyMetalSonicRM yeah it is hard to argue with the quality of this one in my opinion! I'm with you on T2
13:53 I’ve noticed it before and that’s always been there on previous releases I’ve noticed them in. DVD and Blu-ray.
Nice! I’ll definitely come back to this video once my copy arrives!
@@TheTylerpoe I'm anxious to hear what you thought of it!
@ I’m sure I’ll enjoy it, I’ve loved all the 4ks from Cameron so far. I definitely prefer a light grain but it doesn’t me when they’re cleaned up

Has the teal color timing from the blu been scaled back for the 4K?
yeah, I talk about the color improvement and show the side-by-side...that greenish-bluish coloring has been fixed
The 40th Anniversary restoration from a 4K film scan of the 35mm negative and a new Dolby Atmos mix with final sound and picture approved by director James Cameron. Presented by Park Circus with thanks to MGM. Post House: Park Road Post, Colourist: Tashi Trieu, Sound Mixer for Atmos: Mike Hedges
you and I are never going to convince those who decided it was a TOPAZ AI upscale of the old bluray because they are angry at James Cameron lol
@AVAPopCulture I think this 4K restoration is great and also the mono mix is from the 35mm negative.
Too many critics not enough fans people should just idk watch the movie when we watched these movies on vhs no one said shit
agreed!
Finally watched this video, great review. Gonna watch my T1 4k this week!
thanks man! Enjoy that T1 4k!!!
I'm so sick of hearing how bad the Terminator head is. No one b***hes about the way Ashs severed head looks in Alien when Ripley disconnects him. I mean, The Terminator is low-budget
100% agree
Enjoyed the review. Thanks for all the details. I might grab this one and try to get the steelbook
I think the steelbook looks pretty cool in person, it would be nice for The Terminator to have gotten a big chunky box set though!
Great review. I'm really relieved that this one worked out.
Me too! I was nervous about this one but it looks so good! and thank you so much!
Mine arrived from Gruv today. Watched and loved it! Afterwards, I put my old bluray and couldn't believe how bad it looked!
@@screamingeekmedia agreed! Same here
Awesome to hear! Hit you up soon.
thanks brother! I know you'll like this one - especially with that original audio! good talking to you today, see you soon!
That's the only Terminator I did not re-buy on bluray, because I was waiting for the 4K, and also waiting for the reviews.
I think you will be happy with this 4k!
@@AVAPopCulture I'm really curious to see the stop-mo animation and how they smoothed it (again)
Lol
Thanks for reviewing this. Am still waiting for mine eventhough I pre-ordered it within 3 mins after it was available. Estimated delivery to me is now november 22nd… amazon UK…
Anyhow looking foreard to see it!
@@alfonsoagren414 lol right? I don't understand looking so hard for anything so small to complain about
My copy is in the mail and it's moving. I'm so excited. I love these videos. The breakdown of the movie is very enjoyable. Great job!
Thanks man, I appreciate you watching! glad you enjoyed it and I know you will enjoy the movie!
I hear you!
everything from JC nowadays is a disaster BUT, Termiantor 1984 is such a great 4k release
To me it looks great. People hate to hate. It don’t make sense to me. Even jaws 3 I had to pause to find the ai and even then it took me forever to find it. There may be some in the terminator but it looks better than ever. I’m happy.
@@williamdriver1959 I agree! I don't understand taking something we love and actively trying to be negative...I will always give my honest opinion even if I think something is subpar but seeking first to be negative is crazy to me
@ clicks. If it’s negative people seem to flock to it versus if it’s positive. IMO anyway.
yo lov it thats great!!
just don't get upset if others have different opinion 🤷 ....thats the problem is when people stereotype name call label others for having different opinion......it wrong and why things in this world are fukkked up.
@Reggaebeatman different opinions are cool - just back them up... the whole "it sucks cause it sucks" or "it's great cause it's great" doesn't work well... especially if you've never made a movie, filmed a movie, edited a movie, color corrected a movie, restored a movie etc etc... thats
I don't care much about grain or no grain, i just don't like it when the grain removal causes wax skin and strange ai artefacts
@@TooBokoo and people still calling this BS "4K"
"It has become fashionable and trendy to hate on James Cameron in anything he does".... that's because most people are followers and can't form their own opinion.
@@austinwillcut4919 yep!!
@AVAPopCulture i certainly will check em out matey! Always keen to expand my knowledge. Nice 1 👌
Hey there, thanks for the info. BTW: Didn’t know that JC is in the 4K business. But then again, if he IS he would be in every business by definition, wouldn’t he? 😂 Good to know though, that this is a solid release even if it‘s thin on special features. 👍
LOL I am convinced JC could make a 4k and some people would swear he used all AI hahaha

Uk release is 2 disc
Lightstorm employee confirmed true lies and aliens was due to inexperience with the tech true lies and aliens where the first remasterd @ronhenriques9228
The releases of the 4k blu rays don't match the order of how they remastered the films
Since you’re a director have you met James Cameron?
ha! no!.... Clive Barker is probably the most famous director Ive met and spoke with (off the top of my head anyway)
Does the 4K version come on fairy farts or what sense does constantly blabbing "the 4K compared to the blu-ray" make?

I'm not a JC hater 😂 though please explain how is it that an older m film ROBOCOP 2 recent 4k Sceamfactory release can look so beautiful and retain that nice natural film grain structure and not be too grainy. Plus Sream Factory 4k Robocop has amazing 2 channel laser disk stereo!!!( smashes absolutely destroys the Atmos and any JC 4k)......yet True Lies filmed much later 1995 looks like fancy artificial pixel poop. They had better cameras in 1995😂 and the 4k looks artificial 🎉.......😂 it like eating artificial fake food ain't good for your digestive system.
BTW my Terminator steelbook is on the way......it my favourite Terminator 🎥 and that Bike scene in start amazing.....I remember those HarleyDavidsons ...I hope hear that Throttle through my Subs
which I run in Stereo for these older films.
Actually a nightmare on elm street same year film grain use is very similar same with twister
Film grain difference is more noticeable with correct tv picture settings and dolby vision with 1000 nits
Lately warner bros 4k remasters have had very light film grain without dnr

"Because who on Earth is doin' that?".... people living in their basements just like James Cameron said lol. I thought this 4K turned out pretty good, people need to accept these older movies on 4K are never going to look EXACTLY 100% like they did in theaters or VHS ..... it just isn't possible. These movies are just getting too old at this point, the original negatives/ prints are fading and it's hard to reconstruct what every single film looked back then color grade wise/what level of brightness they had back then. Also, the negatives could have damage to them, and they might have to do some digital tinkering to restore them.
Great review. I 100% agree about the extreme nit pickers need to get a life.
I really appreciate your kind words! It's great to know that others share the same perspective.
😂
Get educated kid they didn't use that watch jaws 4k restoration documentary he used the 4k di of the negative only need to use the physical negative is for damage fixed once stored on di it is all good
James cameron reassured he left the film grain the previous blu ray wasn't touched only the color timing was and they didn't do basic stuff needed for film grain on releases for blu ray
They already did the physical damage repair part of the process for old blu ray
Old master, no new highlights details, excessive saturation, AI upscale..
