The way the marketing team failed this movie was so heartbreaking. I remember watching the movie when it came out, during my freshman yr of HS, and absolutely loving it. It really changed my view of Megan Fox at that time and I remember going back and watching Juno after because of Diablo Cody. But literally none of my male friends liked the movie and barely any of my female friends had seen it because they thought it was a "look how hot Megan Fox is" kind of deal. The marketing really ruined the release.
Definitely agree with that, I think this is such a wonderful movie and I really wish the marketing hadn’t done it such a disservice and stopped so many people from seeing it.
"It's not like we get any other healthy queer relationships here, we're just left to sit with this failed one." Genuinely my life ages 14 to 19 and why this movie is attached permanently to my heart
omg. the "i present femme because we live in a 3 strikes and youre out society and im already a woman and queer" put into words something i knew but didnt KNOW.
I was a teenage girl at the time of release. I was dragged by my single father to see it in theaters, due to his (gross) crush on Megan fox. I left the theater a CHANGED WOMAN and was immediately enamored by the film, I completely got it. My middleaged father, however, didn't care for it and left disappointed. This was a perfect example as to how and why the marketing for this film was completely backward and did it such a disservice.
@@sarahturgeon7516 because he was my dad in his late 40s, and Megan was in her early 20s at the time. He openly objectified her in front of his impressionable teenage daughter. Therefore: gross crush.
It's stated multiple times how much Jennifer and Needy care about each other, and how they've been best friends for years, but I feel like it wasnt shown as well as it could've been in the movie. Like, some scenes kind of make it seem like Jennifer has been callous and even mean to Needy all the time, when that attitude actually came after her attack.
oh right yeah, like shoving her into a wall and insulting her relationship with her boyfriend totally happened after the attack, not literally right before they went to the low shoulder concert (Jennifer was always treating Needy like dookie. unfortunately this actually does mirror many female friendships, especially in middle adolescence)
My favorite soundtrack moment of the Jennifer's Body is one you didn't mention - introducing Jennifer and Needy's relationship with the song I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You by Black Kids. In the films own words, it's totally lesbigay, and it delights me
I remmeber when the movie came out and saw tons of bad reviews but i watched it anyways and fell in love with it. I literally never understood why people didnt like it at the time
It's unbelievable how it's still being miss marketed to this day at least with its presentation on RUclips, the poster & synopsis should really be updated
The marketing at the time really fucked over this movie, I remember the spots as a young gay boy and avoiding the movie because not only did it seem like it was for straight boys, but it made the movie seem really gross and exploitative, which couldn't he farther from the actual contents of the movie
Yea, the marketing was super damaging and honestly was a big component of why I even avoided the film for a while, even knowing its cult classic status. I guess fear that the movie would just be exploitative and trashy kept me at a distance.
I remember watching Jennifer's Body with my dad, and I didn't like it due to perceiving it as another body of work made to appeal to a creepy male audience. Years later, however, I revisited the film and found it to be more meaningful than I initially recalled it to be. Looking at it as a badly-marketed masterpiece rather than a sexy-teenage-succubus-kills-emo-boys film, I can deeply appreciate its commentary on predatory behavior, the cycle of abuse, and codependency. The scene where a bloodcaked, disheleved Jennifer goes to Needy's house after "surviving" the sacrifice became incredibly difficult to watch, knowing that Jennifer was actually fighting the urge to hurt Needy like how she had been hurt. I'm glad that I've rediscovered the film and decoded it after all these years.
Thank you! That was definitely something interesting I picked up on that I can’t remember seeing anyone else talk about so I’m happy I could explore it.
@@makingmediamatter I think Diablo Cody always has interesting takes on post 9/11 Americana (the 80s-ification of Juno harkens back to a good ole days nostalgia, clashing with the scary badness that is Jennifer Gardners modern minimalistic science forward motherhood)
To be fair to Ebert, his star ratings were out of 4 possible stars so his 3 out of 4 stars was a good review even if he did mischaracterize the movie as "twilight for boys".
my husband walked out of this film when he saw it in the theatre as a teenage boy… I saw it in my 20s as a sapphic adult woman and was immediately in love with it. even for two queer folks, the viewing experience was SO different for us, I think mainly because of the insane marketing campaign pre-release (& Diablo Cody’s writing style lol) and this video got to the heart of that perfectly!
I LOVED that soundtrack! "In the Flesh" was an interesting cover of Blondie's song. In fact, it's one of those that was made all the more different because it's pretty much a female song sung by a male. But yes the soundtrack was quirky and had a lot of great songs including All Time Low's "Toxic Valentine" which, much to my disappointment ran a little shorter than most. Not sure if my repulsion to "Through the Trees" is because the movie turned me against it but there's something about that song I hate. Can't put my finger on it. "Through the Trees", brrrrr.
Damn, no! This will have spoilers. I'll see Jennifer's Body tonight and I'll see the essay tomorrow u.u I do leave you my like and my comment tho! Come on algorithm pick this channel up and send it to the stratosphere!!!!
I was 12/13 when this movie came out. I remember seeing it with my brother who wanted to take me to a scary movie. I was a tween at the time and didn't really get the point of it, but it definitely stuck with me (I guess like your grass clip) and I've been able to enjoy it a lot more as I've aged and watched it time and time again
I remember watching this movie at my friend's house, in the basement, I was 17/18, and i just remember feeling shook watching it. This movie stayed with me for years. I recently re-watched it a few months ago and it's as amazing, if not more so than I remember. For some people, this was just a silly campy movie, but for some of us, it helped us with sexual trauma, or helping us face, acknowledge our inner sexual desires, feelings or attractions that we buried away, perhaps without even knowing. For me, rewatching this film, it was like visiting an old high school friend, wanting to hug Jennifer. I'm 31, and I know full well it's not real, it's just a movie, but I pray Megan and Amanda know how much this movie means to people. It's horrible how they ruined it with wrong marketing, how they advertised the movie for the wrong audience, boys, men watching it, highly disappointed, and the girls and women who needed this film, might have missed out, all bc it was show cased as a sex symbol movie for boys.
I really liked this movie when it came out and I just DID NOT understand the hate it got. I thought I was crazy until the recent reappraisal it got. Fantastic analysis, but why is the algorithm trying to bury this video?! I say A+, I'll forward it to some friends!!
first and foremost i love this whole critique, but also... why say lesbian explicitly, repeatedly, when both girls seem to be pretty clearly bisexual? jennifer outright says "i go both ways" and needy clearly really loved her boyfriend. we also have the word sapphic which would have avoided the clash
i wanted to compliment you and the video. i thought of 7 different ways but somehow couldn't construct a sentence :) i really enjoyed listening to your analysis
Not sure about this essay... For me, as soon as Jennifer is transformed, she representes a more agressive sexuality, traditionally male.... And it's the body horror that subverts the male gaze.
i love most of this essay, but i disagree that needy fell into jennifer’s violent ways. i think she killed jennifer not out of vengeance, but because she wanted to save the people of the town, and jennifer from herself. i think she killed the band to avenge jennifer, not just for violence’s sake.
Nice, in depth video. I just have a minor, technical comment: The word titular refers to the title of the film, book, play or whatever. So, when you are referring to the kissing scene between Jennifer and Needy as the "titular" scene, it doesn't make sense. If the movie were called "Jennifer's Kiss", then it would make sense. (It also means someone with a title bearing significance - like a titular rank - but I don't think you were going for that.) Like I said, minor.
The marketing was a lure for teenage boys to come watch a feminist movie the way Jennifer herself lures them to death by luring her with her body. In both instances the boys were not happy with the outcome.
I dont agree with the analysis of how the close up of the kiss is catered to the male gaze. I thought it really was a focus and a highlight of the relationship between needy and jennifer - how in the beginning they highlighted the two holding hands, to the two sharing this intimate kiss filled with desire. Other than that, i really enjoyed most of the video and the analysis was really thought provoking!
Totally agree, it was also in stark contrast to the lack of sensuality in Needy's sex scene with her boyfriend. It suggested that the sexual connection between Needy and Jennifer was more authentic and satisfying.
I always interpreted Jennifer's body as an emptied vessel inhabited solely by an entirely new soul, the demon. Now I understand that Jennifer herself survives, but just gains demonic powers. Obviously, her attitude seems to be more callous and influenced by the demon, but it's still Jennifer. This changes the movie a lot.
Ngl, i remember being one of those guys waiting for that shared kiss scene but after rewatching it few times since highschool i was like huh...theres a bit more here to it lol

I note that because I am from Minnesota, and this film is a very rare occurrence of something taking place in my home state, outside of like... Fargo or Purple Rain lol.
I had no idea about the song from Hole that the title is inspired by but I'll listen to it! I like Megan Fox's brand of feminism because she shows people that it's okay to express your sexuality and all sides of womanhood, and the fact that her character doesn't apologize for her behavior is also a bit of an FU to the Patriarchy as a whole. In an ideal world she would have just existed without having to unalive boys to begin with, and just be herself.
I remember at the time I loved it (I was in middle school and a closeted gay who later realized they were a trans woman) and I could not for the life of me understand why people didn’t like it to. I was literally the demo the movie was made for 💀
Now that I think about it, misdirection of Jennifer's Body's marketing reminds me of how publishers failed Lolita back then. Both are stories about young females struggling from abuse, sexual included. And both have commentary on how harmful the male gase is for women. But just like Lolita, Jennifer's Body was promoted as a male gase fantasy. Which is somehow dramatic
That’s a great connection, definitely one I’ve thought about in the past. Media exploring the male gaze through a feminine lens and doing nuanced work with it is so often misinterpreted
i'm so pleased to have come across this video and your channel! this is fantastically composed and i really enjoyed it, i can't wait to see what else you have to offer! jennifer's body snuck up on me - i'd gone to see it with my best friend on a free movie tuesday, not expecting to enjoy it at all after not really liking juno and being sort of lukewarm on megan, but it really impressed me from the first viewing and is now one of my favorites. i've been glad to see megan get a sort of redemption arc with her career (til death is fantastic) and i hope she starts to really thrive.

Of course, I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed it and gained something from it!!!
I loved your video! My biggest content suggestion is The Shining. That horror movie is one of the best and can be analyzed so deeply

This is such a good video! As soon as I saw that you were making a video on this movie in the community post, I was pumped! Keep up the good work!!

this video is good!
I really appreciate you saying that!
i'm so pleased to have come across this video and your channel! this is fantastically composed and i really enjoyed it, i can't wait to see what else you have to offer!
jennifer's body snuck up on me - i'd gone to see it with my best friend on a free movie tuesday, not expecting to enjoy it at all after not really liking juno and being sort of lukewarm on megan, but it really impressed me from the first viewing and is now one of my favorites. i've been glad to see megan get a sort of redemption arc with her career (til death is fantastic) and i hope she starts to really thrive.
Thank you for the kind words and for watching my video!!!
