Hi Grayce I am a retired school bus mechanic and farmer and the cummins ISB that is what is in your pickup truck the lift pump is a common problem the pump can run but not put out enough fuel pressure to keep the engine running you need at least 2 psi of fuel pressure to feed it. If you just bump the starter it will turn the lift pump on for a few seconds, you need to hear that running. Once that is working there should be a bleed screw on the top of the filter (can't remember exactly) open that till you get fuel with the lift pump running. Then crack the injection lines loose where they go into the cylinder head, crank the engine till fuel squirts out. The tighten line and it should start. Could be the injection pump went bad from setting, they were known for having issues, mostly was an electronic issue from overheating of the circuit board on the pump.

I got a 1998 Dodge Dakota from my neighbor for $600, Basically, he wanted it gone and I was interested in getting a second car that still ran and didn't have a sophisticated computer. The main issue was that it hesitated badly. However, after I replaced the battery, we just had to crank the engine just long enough for enough fuel to get in to get it going and move it into our driveway. I spent a month doing various things to it to get it rode worthy again. The most major thing that brought it back to life was cleaning out the throttle body. I have Scotty Kilmer to thank for that advice. That stopped it from hesitating. From there, I replaced the front brakes, put all new tires on it, changed the oil, and ended up putting a starter switch in the cab that would create a short between the positive battery and the starter because it doesn't always start in park. I now use it as a utility vehicle.

Hey Grayce ! Whenever I was researching codes on those trucks , I have red 24v 2nd gen that has the n0 bu5 issue and when looking at codes I got a P1693 as well which based on my research it is a companion code " A 9Companion DTC9 was set in both the ECM and PCM. " ( Service Manual ) but if you think its the ECM , that would be on the drivers side of the engine just bellow the fuel filter bowl. also try just bumping the starter on that truck of which will make the lift pump run for 30 seconds , of which you could maybe test for power at. That's just a bit of info I have to throw at it. Hope you get it going again!

I have a 2001 dodge 2500 with a Cummins so I have some experience. I’m also a komatsu technician. First I would verify if you have a lift pump mounted on the engine block under the fuel filter or inside the fuel tank. Bumping the key on will run the lift pump for 10-20 seconds for priming purposes. You’ll hear it energize. You can also check for fuel at the injection pump by pushing in a Schrader valve located on the injection pump itself. And finally you can crack the injector lines to check if fuel is actually reaching the injectors. If you have questions let me know

    • @thefarmergrayce

If you bump the starter for second and leave the key on you should hear the lift pump cycling, if not then that’s most likely your issue or it’s not supplying enough fuel pressure. A fuel pressure gauge is a must on these 2nd gen 24v trucks. I have an 01 6 speed too

Same as other comments. Make sure youve got power to pump and fuel coming out. Check fuel pressure on pump, take power straight to pin 7 if all looks good and see what happens...rules out vp and everything upstream

  • @RichG-fl3ll
    @RichG-fl3ll 15 дней назад +3

P1693 is a companion code. After turning the ignition on, off, on, off, wait, the p codes will cycle through, it will say p done, then it will flash the ECM codes. 1689 or 0216 is a dead VP44. You can also turn the ignition on, and barely start the ignition (bump the starter) that will cycle the lift pump for 20 seconds. If it is a stock lift pump, it is likely dead and needs replaced. The VP44 needs fuel to lubricate, and it will burn up quickly if the lift pump is dead. The engine sounds fine when turning over, just like it isn’t getting fuel.

There are a couple of lift pumps way better than the factory one from AIRDOG FRRP( factory replacement raptor pump) part# R3SBD100 or from FASS DRP02. Be sure to buy a relocation kit for the pump because with the kit the pump will be closer to the tank and will work with less effort and last longer.

Oh the joys of resurecting "dead" trucks. Fuel issues on trucks with electric components are trickier to find than mechanical at least for me. I did encounter a powerstroke once that wouldn't fire the injectors simply because the batteries were weak. Tried pulling it but that wouldn't do it. Charged the batteries overnight and it lit right off. Might be worth while to put some fresh batteries in and see what happens. You're on the right track i think though. Just have to puzzle it out. Saw you struggle a little bit with that boot there. A cool tool to make for helping with rubber boots and hoses is take a broken screw driver and grind a point on it and bend it 90ish degrees. Stick it under the lip of the boot and slide around your hose barb. Really helps. Also i have a few times in my life encountered a fuse that looked ok but was bad internally. Sometimes if you're getting really puzzled check with a volt meter or test light. Dont even have to pull them to check that way. Probably won't help you here but something to keep in your back pocket for future diagnostic. Good luck. If memory is correct is this the truck you called "Pearl"? Will be nice to see her back on the road.

Hi, so the p1693 code is very likely a dead injection pump. Also you need to crack the big banjo bolt on the side of the injection pump, then see if you have fuel pressure when you bump the starter. If no fuel pressure, then you need to get some kind of lift pump system.. I would not use the factory style, cuz they just give problems, then after you have fuel pressure, if it doesn’t start, it’s 95% going to be the injection pump. Good luck on it!

  • @garredsellers96

If volume is low but bubble free, it can still cause cavitation in the injection pump because the VP44 is having to pull the fuel creating a vacuum that can cause cavitation. If you are not getting any fuel at all, but you know the pump is operating, you would want to check the fuel filter itself to ensure that you do not have any blockage. If that checks out, you will want to perform what’s called a bucket test. This consists of removing the line that attaches to the top of the tank and placing that in a bucket of clean diesel fuel.

Running a jumper wire 2 the lift pump See if it kicks on if it does then try to start the truck It could also be that since you disconnected that neutral safety switch. You're jumper wire that you made Could be causing it to not start I have seen that happen in the past But the trucks old enough that shouldn't matter Just keep working at it.You'll get it ultimately. These older diesels are not that complicated

Those trucks are none for the electric lift pump going out I’ve worked on a lot of those dodges and have had to replace a lot of the lift pumps. If it gets power and ground when you bump the key and it still doesn’t pump fuel then it’s bad. Also with it setting the lift pump could have gotten mess up from not having fuel due to a drain back issue from setting and you may also not have gotten all the air out of fuel system while starting it with starting fluid. Crack a couple injector lines loose next time you sty to crank it to bleed the fuel system. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work God bless

Thank for sharing Miss Grayce. Its good too hear from you. Hope you do get your truck running. What was you going to check the level on again? When you pulled that long thing out? Then you put 10w 40.. what in? That was what? Can you clear that up for us??😊lol.

From the fuel filter to the injection pump pop a line off see you get fuel. Don't take much just see you get fuel come out

Probably the lift pump. Old diesel also can gum things up. 5psi is what the lift pump should push. They can run off less but 5 / 7 psi is where they should be. Also Cummins aren't to happy when air gets in the lines. If you replace the lift pump then also have someone crank it and crack each injector line off the cylinder head and let it purge each line. It will be pretty obvious when the air is out. Squirts fuel everywhere. They line just needs to be cracked. Hope this might help.

The old diaphragm lift pumps are prone to failing....I just replaced my 93 12 valve to an upgraded HVLP piston lift pump that boosts fuel pressure up to 13-15 psi up from 4-5 on that old worn out one. There's a bunch of videos on youtube on how to replace that.

When I was driving this truck I couldn’t afford to ever take it to a mechanic if something went wrong so I learned everything I know by just doing it! RUclips videos and Cummins forums taught me a lot

That year of Ram would have the vp44 fuel injection pump. If I were you I would check the fuel pump relay in the PDC, in the driver's side of the engine bay. If you remove the fuel feed line that goes to the VP44 from the lift pump and you have good fuel supply, my bet it would have something to do with this relay or something related to it.

All ya gotta do is bump the starter and let the lift pump run crack a line at the fuel filter make sure u have good fuel there and then crack 1 4 and 5 injector lines crank it over till you have fuel at 1 and close it and 4 and close it and the truck should be running

If your lift pump is an electric one. jump the relay and see if it turns on and just let it run for a bit to see if you are getting fuel flow.

Ms Grace I am a man that likes diesels and was a driver that loved every Mack I drove and my dad owned. I am now 45 years old and disabled and can't enjoy the stuff I used to. I enjoy your videos and have a couple items that are Mack related I'd like to send you. Thank you again for all your videos and let me know if I can send you the small items I have.😊

Sorry for 8 day later comment, Just watched this video!
Consider renting an obd2 scan tool. P1693 on some googling and forum reads indicates there are more faults that need extracted from the ECM. Specially on pre emission older diesels because the dash is not going to display every code in the list.
However, if I am to guess the issue. It will actually still be fuel related, (which can trigger multiple codes in ECM)
14:07 Your getting fuel in the fuel / water separation filter however, the high pressure gear driven fuel pump has lost prime so there is air in the fuel injector rails.
You will need to crack a couple fuel lines that sit above the injectors and crank the engine over and pressurize the air out and leak fuel out of them.
After that tighten them back up then engine should fire up.
These kind of things happen when leaving a diesel sit for long periods of time (3 years as the title says)
Using Ether to keep it running its not necessarily good, you can burn the high pressure fuel pump or cause the internals to leave metal shavings due to the air being locked into the fuel rail with not enough motion to pass through the injectors.
Do be careful when messing with things like this though, they call it "high pressure fuel pumps" for a reason if you don't know what your doing? It can cause some injuries.
    ECM,
Being that it is 2000, and pre emissions truck I dont see an issue with quick swapping ecm's to check something out however, anything diesel 2008 and up you have to get an very expensive programming / scan tool to marry all the computers together and vin match them so they communicate with each other. Some ECM's will lock out then your left with 2 bad trucks after that. (Example: Paccar MX13's and MX15's from past companies I have worked for when they tried this)
Hopefully this helps you on the next day for the dodge adventure!

Crack the injector lines at top of injector and bleed the air out of lines once you see fuel close em up and hopefully you get a start up👍🏻

Worse case your vp44 went out, best case it’s the fuel filter or you just need to crack 1/3/5 injector lines and bleed the air out

Get some volts under the hood and it might just fire right up...I have faith in ya bbgrl that you'll get it running again cause those diesel engines love good strong batteries and I'm sure 1 of the viewers may have some advice for you cause I'm used to older mechanical stuff with diesel engines. The computerized and electronic stuff is beyond my knowledge...Good luck with getting it going again 👍

One commenter did note that you may have gotten your ECM and PCM confused. Note also that with the weak battery on the final start trial in the video, that really may or may not have been a valid trial to glean any data from as the engine may or may not have been cranking fast enough to get anything going in the first place.
