  • To properly break in piston rings in a fresh engine build is pretty simple. The most important step is making sure the engine has no leaks and ignition timing is set properly. Hi Blake, yes you can run it for roughly a half hour to an hour before taking it out to seat the rings. Just don't let it idle any more than is needed to check things over. Letting a new engine idle is hard on the rings and lifters until it has few miles on it.

    On a new motor if you think it has ring washout can you just ball hone it to get crosshatch back? And do you have to buy new rings? Thanks in advance

      Usually you can ball hone a fairly fresh engine with ring wash out if the cylinders only were lightly glazed over. Never re use any ring no matter how new if they have been washed out.

    Total seal did a great video on using a dino for 25 minutes, 2,500 RPM with a minimum of 50lb load and as each minute past by the ring kept seating, gaging off their blow by meter.. pretty fascinating that it took 25 minutes..

      I have seen that as well on the dyno. In the car it happens a little quicker if loaded properly. One time we re ringed my brothers 400 for the Pontiac event and literally finished it up the morning before the event. The first two passes the car ran 12.40's the third pass the rings seated and it went a 12.00. Picked up 4 tenths once seated. It was pretty cool to see the HP difference first hand.

      I worked out once the pistons go up and down about a 1,000,000 times in an hour. So it makes sense if the rings are going to seat and seal well they do it soon after first start up..

    When you are doing this are you using break in oil?

  • @MasterSheep598
    @MasterSheep598 10 месяцев назад +1

    What about a turbo or supercharger? Same break in? Or should you avoid boost?

    • @dcimotorsports1111
      @dcimotorsports1111  10 месяцев назад +1

      For boosted engines you can do it the same way, but like you said. Don't use any boost or very little boost. What your basically doing is get compression behind the rings to push them into the cylinder walls to seat them.

    Old school was mixing comet and trany fluid.

      I remember that from abck in the day when Comet had a mild abrasive in it. Now it wouldn't work lol. They took the silica out to protect the fiberglass tubs :)
