For all of you suffering from anxiety, depression, and other sicknesses of the mind, Christ has chosen you to have a very sanitised glimpse of whats to come. ‘He will only save those who want to be saved’ - this is so not true!! It’s grace that will save a sinner and hater of God. Never can I thank my King and Savior enough for entering into my heart with His calling when I ‘wanted’ absolutely nothing to do with God and was loving my sinful life.
Was Paul asking Christ into his heart on his way to Damascus? Read what he writes in Romans 9 about those who ‘want’
15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
      - I know God can also work His grace mysterious, slowly pulling us towards Him. But He is always the First, it wasn’t you. Without Him being first you don’t want to surrender your all to Him.

I will focus on two different words in your phrase.
      1. He will ONLY save those who want to be saved.
Actually NOBODY wants to be saved. Because nobody seeks God (Psalm 14, Romans 3). Because of our sinful nature we don’t have a true desire for God, quiet the opposite we run away just like Adam and Eve. Nothing good dwells in us (Romans 7), wanting to be saved (not just to escape hell) is good and cannot arise from the sinful flesh.
The true desire to seek and knowing God is worked by the Spirit. And He has ONLY sinful, unwilling haters of God to begin His work in.
      2. He will only save those who WANT to be saved
That’s clearly not true. Paul, the Samaritan woman, the demon possessed man at Gadara. They didn’t seek, want or came to Jesus. Jesus came to them and saved them. So again, “it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy”.

@@paulustarsus I cited several Bible verses so I probably have taken more than a moment to think about this…
Nobody wants to go to hell, but that doesn’t automatically mean we want to go to heaven. Especially not when that heaven is a place where it’s no longer about you and your desires, but God and God only. This desire to glorify God and sacrifice our lives unto him (Romans 12:1) is true salvation and is a gift of Gods grace and not something that originated in our sinful hearts or what we would ever want or wish for without grace.

I thank God for John Piper's ministry. God has blessed me through his ministry many times over many years. However, on this topic I think he misses a couple of important points, one being a technical point about the Greek, and another being a basic truth about the nature of hell and the final fate of the unrighteous:
    1. Here is 2 Thessalonians 1:9
CSB17 2 Thessalonians 1:9 They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction from [Greek: apo] the Lord's presence and from his glorious strength
The Greek word translated "away from" in some translations and just "from" in others is apo. In some contexts, it could mean something like "away from," but in this context it more likely means just "from" and refers to the source of the "penalty of eternal destruction." In other words, the Lord is the one who causes the eternal destruction of the unrighteous.
2, "eternal destruction" does not mean "eternal torment." The Bible teaches that unbelievers will perish (John 3:16), that God will destroy their bodies and souls in hell (Matthew 10:28), and that they will be burned to ashes (2 Peter 2:6). This teaching is sometimes called conditional immortality. If you google either my name and "conditional immortality" or google "Rethinking Hell," you will find a lot of material showing that the Bible teaches conditional immortality and not eternal torment.

It just doesn’t make sense that temporal sin would be punished in an eternal way. And everlasting life is reserved for the saved, not the lost. Fear the one who can DESTROY body and soul in hell. Destroy means destroy. That makes sense. Rethinking Hell is a great resource.

@@MarkWCorbett1 Thank you! I wish John Piper would see Rev. 14:10 (tormented IN the presence of God in hell) and then reconcile that with 2 Thess. 1:9. I don't know why people simply assume the soul is immortal. Perhaps because Greek philosophy is so prevalent. Socrates said the soul is indestructible. The soul who sins shall die, not live forever in torment.

11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

Gods word is spirit, therefore not literal. Hell is a myth . Think on this: Fire is used to refine gold ,silver etc, brimstone is used to heal wounds and is a disinfectant used in world war two on wounds. So the words are not literal but spiritual, as God is a consuming fire, but what does He consume? The carnal mind which is the enemy of God.The words in the whole bible are parables, and types and shadows of higher spiritual things. The natural ,carnal mind cannot receive the spiritual words that parables contain, for they are spiritually discerned, by the spirit of God within, if it has been given by God.

@@billygoat5091 How many lies have you told, and what do you call someone who lies? Have you ever stolen something (even when you were small. Even from your parents. Even a sweet), and what do you call someone who steals? Have you ever taken God’s name in vain (very serious; in Old Testament times, the Jews wouldn’t even say the name of God for fear of blasphemy) - even ‘OMG’? Jesus said whoever looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery in his heart; have you ever looked with lust? One more: Ever disrespected your parents?
Well I’m not judging you - but if you’ve done these things then you’re a liar, thief, blasphemer, adulterer-at-heart and rebel, so you're not good enough to go to heaven; that’s how seriously God takes sin. He is Holy (perfectly good/righteous and separate from sin) which means that He is perfect in justice; that means that just like a just judge sentences criminals to pay for the wrong they caused, so does God sentence the payment of all sins. If a judge was in front of a guilty criminal and just said "I forgive you. Your crimes don't need to be paid for" that judge would be considered unjust. Justice means all wrong is punished - and if God were to judge you by the moral law (we’ve already looked at 5 commandments) would you be innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell? The answer is hell - the wrath of God upon you for your sin. It is eternal fire, billy goat. Jesus isn't a liar.
But fortunately, God’s will is not that you perish. He wants all men everywhere to be saved. But all sin must be paid for, because he us just. So do you know what He did for us guilty sinners? In self-giving mercy, He sent His Son Jesus Christ to take the punishment for our sins (and here is why - - ->). He lived the perfect life that we should have lived - tempted at all points and yet He NEVER sinned. Through His life, being in very nature God, He revealed God to men; but we in our hatred condemned Him to death. On that cross as Jesus suffered, He took on the sin of the world and was judged in our place; receiving God’s wrath. You and I broke God’s law, but Jesus paid the fine. God can justly forgive us.
On that cross He died, then He was buried, but 3 days later He was raised from the dead - conquering death and Hell and ushering in The Kingdom of God. He then ascended to the right hand of God the Father (where He came from) now Lord of the living and the dead. God has fixed a date when He will judge the world in righteousness. What you need to do is repent (In humility, acknowledge your sin before God and turn to a relationship with Him) and trust ALONE in Jesus Christ and His work on the cross; and God will grant you the gift of the Holy Spirit. Then be baptised. Jesus' perfect righteousness will be accredited to you and you can stand in a relationship with the God of the Universe, a Father. If you repent and believe the gospel.
ROMANS 10:9 - If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved

"These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, AWAY from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His might" 2 Thess. 1:9
How could Paul write this if God is omnipresent? Simple:
They are tormented IN the presence of God and then completely consumed - eternal death/destruction/punishment AWAY from the presence of God. They never live again. It will be as if they never existed, as it is written in Obadiah. The wages of sin is death, not "the wages of sin is eternal life suffering."
The punishment of hell is not accompanied by the gift of eternal life. Ps 37:10-20, John 3:16, Obadiah 16-18, Mal 4:1-3

Hi pastor john. Been listening almost a year. And I’ve asked you on your RUclips I’ve spread your RUclips but
What am I meant to do with the hate in my heart, the anger The complete disregard for human life and the fact I’m self aware enough to know all it’s bringing me is despair and sorrow and loneliness because I myself can’t control it. Especially without stupid tablets. Tablets I wish I could throw away and know I would be okay enough that if I did and ended up harming someone then it was me all along and not nothing to do with doctors or anything along them lines. I’ve had enough pastor john. I’ve removed family from my life. I’ve only gotten worse as I’ve gotten older (now 27)
In saying that I do get moments of joy I try to remember them when things are happening that involve anger of my heart but in saying that
Life’s pretty good hallelujah. It’s the petty heart of hate that’s the problem. It leads to resenting so much and not blaming anyone or anything I truly believe it’s been the length of time I’ve spent in this pain. You’ve preached in Ireland you should know my race except I’m a Scottish traveler. Not Irish. I Know this’ll sound a bit left field but I knew this was going to happen. I knew I’d end up here. Once upon a time I used to want to settle down. Minister and be married. Now I know I couldn’t ever be that person. Not a lack of faith. Just it’s honestly too late that’s why I’m asking about the heart of hate and not finding a spouse to destroy two maybe more lives. Or to be a minister because I don’t think people should preach as I don’t take from the table unless I’ve felt I’ve settled whatever sin is in my heart and soul before I can accept the breaking of the bread. It’s long enough I’ll leave it at that

And I think I found a solution so to speak, proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding if you know anything about meditation which I'm sure you do, your told to enter a certain state of mind that's empty and it will bring you peace by focusing on your breath, as Christians we are told to trust God and lean not on our understanding in the same way we kind of parallel that state except ours is the way it should be. We should focus on God and empty our mind, fill it with scripture and meditate daily (which means to mutter and ponder on the things of God) don't worry about other people or their lives, God is in control always let God's love fill you and may the grace of our lord be with you always. Hope this helps bless you brother.

Hey man, I've struggled with anger a lot myself. My anger comes from a past of dealing with chronic pain, not trusting God fully, things people have said/done to me and being tormented by demons. I am a born again Christian who tries to do what good I can and help others and I am good at holding my anger around people unless someone had extreme violent intent towards me, in that situation I think I would lose control completely. I have suffered from extreme anger/sadness for years alone and people do not know this other side of me. I have a couple suggestions for you. 1st thing I would suggest is to place God at the highest possible place in your heart. Make Jesus Lord of your life and dedicate your life to the Lord completely. Pray continuously and ask God for help. God listens more readily to those who place him in a place of importance. 2nd thing I would say is to seek deliverance. Demons or unclean spirits, whatever you want to call them are real and although I know I have been saved, I have been absolutely tortured in many ways from the presence of these things. I hate them. We are dealing with a real enemy in satan and his servants which will always try to hit us at our weak points. We must have God who is unchanging and is infinitely strong as our rock. He gives us strength because we are completely powerless in ourselves. It has been an ongoing journey for me learning to live with all this. I am also unmarried and I admit sometimes that it can bring sadness, thinking of the love that could be in my life but I am dedicated to God and if I receive that love or not should not really matter in the long run. Find out your calling through Jesus and admit weaknesses/sin to God and seek his presence because the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). We are not perfect and I am not free from this problem myself but if you get on the right path, in time things can get better and you will have a true God ordained purpose for your life.

@@alexmcphee6789 I know that God is sovereign and my pain can be used for good. Yours can be used for good also if you will work with the Lord completely and wholeheartedly. I have had so many moments though in the past where I could not see any greater good in my situation so I'm no stranger to feeling hopeless. I believe that God uses our pain to do something better for us and others in the long run. I feel going through all of this, I was an atheist for a large part of my life (I am 27 now) and through all of this horrible experience I can council or comfort others in the faith. Throughout my journey back to Christ, I came to understand concepts such as why forgiveness is so important, why talking behind the backs of others or acting in rude/negative ways towards others is so much more dangerous than we think, etc. The suffering is a catalyst for growth in ways that no other stimulus can be. If I was joyous and happy all these years, I would not have realized these things. I am very casual in the way that I speak with God and if he asked me would I return to do it all again or was it worth it, I would tell him I'd rather be in heaven hanging out honestly, this reality is difficult and painful and not what I would have wished.
I believe I am currently entering a new season in life with new opportunities and hopefully things will start to look up, as things are changing. Even if we are not fully healed here, we will be in heaven. I had an experience with God a few weeks ago where the Holy Spirit was strong within me and I was able to pray in tongues. I was able to speak to God in my head and ask questions and he led me through the pages of the bible for answers. When I asked what I am supposed to do, I was taken to Numbers ch 6 about the law of the Nazarite and shown that I am to dedicate my life to God completely as a Nazarite would. When I asked for an answer on my business/purpose here I was shown Genesis ch 19 where Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. I focused in verses 12-13 which say: The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here-sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, 13 because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.”
I understood that I am to be a messenger to warn people to get right with God because the times we are living in are serious and the judgment of God is coming. When I asked what time period we are in, I got Revelation chapter 8, the seventh seal being opened just before the trumpets are to sound. I just want to warn you/also encourage you to keep your eyes on the Lord in these times. Give your life to him completely and walk in the Spirit of God so that you don't stumble or fall. Repent of any and all sins and develop your relationship with him through Jesus Christ. I hope you find your Godly calling man and I wish you all the best. We will meet in heaven someday. God bless.

In relation to 2 Thess 1:9, I suppose the answer lays within what context the Greek word [apo/from] is being used. In the following example at Matt 7:23, [apo] is being used within the context of “sending away” from.
Matt 7:23:- “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart [apo/from] me, ye that work iniquity”.
The above, in relation to 2 Thess 1:9, would mean the subject suffers destruction by being sent “away from” the Lord's presence.
However, the usage of [apo] could be understood within a differing context; as shown in Matt:12:38, 12:48.
Matt 12:38:- “Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign [apo/from] thee.
The above, in relation to 2 Thess 1:9, would mean the subject would suffer the destructive power coming “from” the presence of the Lord. In which case; it would correlate with Rev 14:10.
    Peace

It does NOT say, explicitly or implicitly, that all humans apart from the gift of salvation will also be tormented forever.
In contrast, 2 Thess 1:9-10 clearly says of all of the persecutors of the Thessalonian believers, as well as all who disobey the gospel, that they "will pay the penalty of eternal destruction ... when He comes, on that day" (CSB, see also KJV and Greek). This matches Jesus's assertion that the fearsome thing about gehenna is God's power to destroy body and soul. Those are, I would claim, both "clear" and more significantly pertain to us. And they do not mention eternal torment; they are about being destroyed and hence not existing.

I think the best way to harmonise 2 Thess 1:9 and Rev 14:10 is simply to assume that when 2 Thess 1:9 says that the damned will suffer away from the Lord's presence, it just means away from the blessing-giving aspect of his presence.

English not my 1st language. i translated this from a book in our language of someone who knows the Greek very well.
The word 'hell' was never part of the Bible. It was brought in when the church decided to take more control of the people.
The most general words are the Hebrew word Sheoul and the Greek words Gehenna, Tartaro and Hades.
SHEOUL is not hell. It simply is a resting place where people go once they 'die'. (we are spirit, and spirit never dies). King David knew he was going to Sheoul: Ps 49:16 + 88:4; Jacob in Gen 37:35 and Hiskia in Isaiah 38:10 Those three people obviously would never ended up in 'hell', which is proof that Sheoul is not hell.
HADES simply means 'not to see'. Spiritual blindness. That's why Jesus said to the Pharisees in John 9 that they are blind.
In Matt 11:23 + Luke 10:15 Jesus is referring to Capernaum who will be brought down to the debt of hell, because the people did not believe in the miracles he has performed. Its not the péople who will brought down to Hades, but a city! It was a symbolic way of Jesus to tell the people in those city that the were spiritual blind. The same in Matt 16:18
GEHENNA. This word is used 12x in the Bible, whereof 11x by Jesus himself. Matt 5:22 is referring to this word. Gehenna is a valley outside of Jerusalem with the name Gai Hinnon, or sometimes Gai Hinnom. It was a valley that belonged to the sons of Hinnon, and also years ago children were offered to idol Molloch. Later this place were used for the combustion of bodies etc and Gehenna end up with the association of death. Jesus never used the word Hell, but Gehenna.
TARTAROSAS This word appears only once in the Bible: 2Pe 2:4 Petrus is using this word as a place where people are held captivity and not as a place in the dark underworld. This word also refers only to the demonic world and not a place where people will go for punishment once they 'died'.
      -Pierre Grigor
Lazarus and the rich man in Luke
16:19-31 This is only a parable. The rich man represents the Israelites who reveived the law of God plus the prophets. The beggar represents the gentiles. In this parable Jesus is talking about 2 dispensations: the law and grace.

    • @d3anims97
      @d3anims97 2 года назад

@@eekay5710 What Jesus called gehanna, is what we describe when we use the word hell. Jesus spoke of outer darkness, weeping, and gnashing of teeth. Jesus talked about a furnace. Jesus called it Gehenna, we use the word hell today but we're talking about the same place.
It's just like how Jesus' name was Yeshua. The Jews and people of His time would've said "Yeshua," but we say "Jesus" today. Different words because of different languages but the same Person is being described. Same with Gehenna and hell.
Also the Rich man and Lazarus can't be about Israelites and Gentiles because the rich man and Lazarus are both Jews and the rich man never is or can be saved, it was too late for him. The law also cant be the rich man because the law is good and holy and therefore, even symbolically couldn't be subject to destruction or torment. In that parable, Abraham makes it clear that the resulting afterlife of both the rich man and Lazarus was their final judgement for their lives on earth. The law cant be judged and Israel isn't cut off as a whole because the gospel was given to them first.
No matter how we try to avoid it, hell or Gehenna as Jesus called it, is still a reality. He said souls would be judged, there would be a fire that isn't quenched, He warned people to repent and not perish, and said it lasts forever. So we can call it by any name but the reality of those circumstances in that place remains true.

sheol is the old testament word for "hell", and as The Eternal Believer says, it means the grave.
hades is the greek word for "hell" but it also means the grave. you can confirm this by having scripture define scripture. hades is translated from sheol via the greek old testament, the septuagint.
"hell" only means the grave. there is no "hell" as in an eternal subterranean torture chamber. that is never spoken of in scripture, but imposed by the reader. this is exactly why "hades" (the grave) has no victory - because of the resurrection.
1 Cor 15:55 "O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?"
read through this chapter in its context and its clearly talking all about the resurrection of the dead. this specific verse is a quote from Hosea 13:14 which makes it clear its talking about the grave.
Hosea 13:14 "I will ransom them from the power of the grave, I will redeem them from death. O Death, I will be your plagues. O Grave, I will be your destruction!"
the grave has no victory because of the resurrection, which Christ is the firstborn of (Rev 1:5).
it doesn't make sense that Hades means "hell", because if i were to ask you what is the "lake of fire"? you'd say, "hell". well Rev 20:14 says "Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death."
few things wrong with this passage if most peoples interpretation of "hell" is correct. #1 hell being cast into hell to be destroyed, that doesn't make any sense. #2 second death? but people believe people are tormented in hell forever and not actually dead. so that makes no sense.
i personally prefer to believe scripture over mans interpretation and presupposed beliefs. and if a mans interpretation of scripture doesn't align with other scriptures, then the interpretation is incorrect, not scripture.

Neither the rich man nor Lazarus was in heaven for that conversation. Prior to Jesus's death, burial, and resurrection all people went to Sheol (translated as Hades in the Septuagint). Sheol was divided by a great chasm. On one side of the chasm was Paradise/Abraham's bosom and the other side was the place of torment. It wasn't until after Jesus' death/burial/resurrection that believers went to heaven when they die. All of the people that were on the paradise/Abraham's bosom side of Sheol are now in heaven too. Most? scholars teach that Jesus went to Sheol to get the people on the Paradise side to take them to heaven (they say that is where he went when his body was in the tomb before he was resurrected). Jesus said the the thief on the cross next to Him "Today you will be with me in Paradise". There is nothing in the Bible that indicates someone in Sheol can communicate with someone in Heaven.

Hallo Markus, liebe Grüße aus Finnland! The death and resurrection of Christ as the way of obtaining salvation for men make the most sense in the framework of the doctrine called Conditional Immortality. In this view, (physical) life and death are important themes that run throughout the storyline of Scripture, from the beginning of Genesis to the end of Revelation. A lot could be said here, but the short version is that Adam sinned and brought death into the world, losing the possibility of immortality, but the sinless Christ died and through his resurrection, brought eternal life to those who are united with him through faith (see for instance Romans 5 and 6 and 1 Corinthians 15).
Jesus had to take upon himself the judgment that our sins deserve, but as you pointed out, what Jesus did was not suffer eternal torment, but rather he died a painful and shameful death. There should not be anything "only" about that, but the way most people understand the doctrine of hell tends to make the actual death of Christ less meaningful. We have to understand that death is what justice looks like in the Bible, and as Paul said, the wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23). What is commonly called hell is the second death, when the wicked are raised to face judgment and are sentenced to death from which there is no return. Death is the eternal punishment of the wicked; immortal life belongs only to those who are "in Christ".
So Jesus bore hell instead of you by dying on the cross because death is what your sins deserve. You would have deserved being sentenced to that kind of painful and shameful death on the Day of Judgment, and nothing in you would merit a resurrection, so your punishment would be eternal. But Jesus, being sinless, did not deserve to remain dead, and he was raised on the third day in immortal glory, never to die again, and this kind of resurrection you will also share in since you have placed your trust in Jesus and believe that he died on your behalf. To God be glory!

what does the bible say? this is what is up for debate, and i don't expect you to believe what i tell you the bible says. which is why the original comment encourages people to look for themselves what the bible says.
if you want the spoiler alert version: "hell" is referring to the grave. when you die, you go to the grave until you're resurrected and made alive again. at this point you go to the kingdom, the promised restored creation, or you go to the lake of fire where you're killed, snuffed out of existence
oh death, where is your sting? oh hades (hell) where is your victory?
there isn't victory in the grave, because Jesus walked out of it.
this is exactly what baptism symbolizes as well. dying, being buried, and being resurrected.
there is no "heaven" and there is no "hell" in the tradition sense. they do not exist, and are never spoken of or taught throughout scripture at all.
this boils down to the immortality of the soul. you do not have an immortal soul, and thus when your body dies there is no place it needs to go. but rather you are a soul, made up of the spirit (breath) of God and your body (fashioned from earth). together they make a living breathing soul. remove one or the other and you no longer are a living breathing soul. you're dead.
"but what about, but what about"
just read scripture for what it says. remove your bias, presupposed beliefs, and allow scripture to influence your beliefs rather than your belief influence what scripture says

@@junk3996 I was reading comments in a couple of videos for a few hours, and you summarized where I’ve been leaning, but I was wondering about those who hold to that view what their thoughts are on Lazarus and the Rich man.
Usually people coincide that with the Old Testament “view of hell” / souls go to Sheol awaiting the judgment (the saved being united with Jesus in heaven after the cross).
Idk about all of that, but that’s my main hesitancy, how that was seemingly an actual place where souls are (not the ECT divider of heaven and hell).
So basically~ If it isn’t the heaven and hell after judgement, it can’t be non existent death, so what is it if not that Old Testament view of Sheol many hold to?

      @junk3996 8 месяцев назад

@@ZachFish- this is a good question
allow me to flush this out a little bit, #1 as to why it can't be what they say
so yes most people hold the idea that abrahams bosom is like a holding place (not heaven, cause Jesus didn't die on their behalf yet) for the old testament saints. and when Jesus died He allegedly went to abrahams bosom, gathered the saints, and took them up into heaven at that point
again this is all presupposing the immortal soul, that something lives on after you die, which the old testament more than the new absolutely refutes to a crazy degree
so why isn't this the case? well the same people that believe the above explanation, believe that Jesus told the thief that he would be with Him in paradise that day (today). but then in their belief they must believe that Jesus went to hell when He died to #1 pay the penalty for death, and #2 preach to the spirits in chains in prison, and #3 to conquer hell. they can't have it both ways.
Jesus didn't go to "paradise" or bring the OT saints to heaven because Jesus Himself says after being resurrected, not to touch Him because He has not yet ascended to the Father. again can't have it both ways.
as for the rich man and lazarus story specifically. this story is obviously not a depiction of heaven and hell, because that is not what they believe heaven and hell to be, not literally. so the story must not be a literal teaching of heaven and hell. again can't have it both ways.
if its a literal story, then that is precisely what heaven and hell look like, as in you can see those in hell and communicate with them etc etc
there are many other ways as to why this story cannot possibly be a literal teaching of heaven and hell, and i'll provide some links later which i believe touch on some more of those as well.
so what is it then? its a parable. its the final parable in a string of parables. why do i think its a parable even though "it would be the only parable with a named person", because the named person is representing someone important to the story.
its a parable because chapters before (Luke...5? 7? 9? i forget which) Jesus Himself promises to not speak to the scribes and pharisees plainly. in this parable in luke 16 it is a string of parables, the final one, in which He is addressing the scribes and pharisees, so He wouldn't be speaking to them in plain language but rather, a parable.
Lazarus is named because that character represents Jesus. the meaning of the parable is essentially Jesus saying to the Pharisees, "look, you guys are our, me and my possy are in" (paraphrase). Jesus is kicking them out of authority, and the elders right to the birthright of Abraham, the inheritance. this no longer belongs to them, but belongs to Jesus the Christ the son of the living God.
the cool thing is, is Jesus basically summed this up to the same audience before, accounted in John 5:46-47. very similar warning.
for more specific in depth study and explanation of the details of this specific parable, you can view these teaching videos
      ruclips.net/video/Oo3cVc7X_F0/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/VEznx8fZSp4/видео.html
these are taken from this series,
      www.4windsfellowships.net/bbi_03.html
      (3rd module out of 12)
now, while directly answering this objection/question may be helpful, the more helpful thing would be to go in depth through the OT as to why exactly immortality of the soul cannot possibly exist/be, thus that would instantly negate any such interpretation of luke 16s parable.
so i encourage you to at least skim through the notes of the 4winds website BBI module 3, from the other prior teachings to the lazarus explanation.
another thing to keep in mind is, the hebrews did not believe in an immortal soul at all, for the cultural and historical context, and wouldn't have understood Jesus words in that way either.

*Is God Present or Absent in Hell?* The correct answer is: God is not in hell. That is because there is no such thing as hell. None of the four Greek and Hebrew words mis-translated as "hell" in the KJV (and others) represents a place of eternal conscious torment.

Jesus used two words for the fate of the wicked beyond this life - Hades and Gehenna. Both words have been translated 'hell.' This assumes that Hades and Gehenna are the same place. This assumption is questionable, at least.
Look closely and what Jesus and the Bible say about Hades and Gehenna. You will see that people go to Hades after they die, after this life, and people go to Gehenna after Final Judgement. In Acts 2 Peter talks about Hades quoting Psalm 16. In the OT Psalm 16 has the Hebrew name Sheol where the NT has the Greek name Hades. Hades and Sheol are names for the same place. Hades / Sheol is the terrible remand prison for the unrepentant, unforgiven, before Final Judgement. Gehenna is the eternal lire, the lake of fire, after Final Judgement.
Psalm 138 says that God is present even in Sheol. Therefore God is present even in Hades. Rev 14:9-11 is about Hades, in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. This part of Rev 14 comes before the Great Throne Judgement - just read on in the chapter.. The translations 'in the presence of...' are better than 'in the distant vision of...'
At the Final Judgement Jesus says to the unrepentant 'Depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.' Elsewhere, Jesus calls this fire Gehenna. Therefore Jesus is not present in Gehenna.
Both the verses can be understood at face value, as long as we recognise that they are talking about 2 different places, to which Jesus gave the different names, Hades and Gehenna.

Why Jeffrey Dahmer is in Heaven.
Jeffrey Dahmer, the serial killer who murdered and ate his victims, believed in Jesus as his Lord and savior in his jail cell before he died.
John 3:16 KJV: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Heaven is not a place for “good” people. Heaven is for whosoever believes in Jesus.
This goes to show you that it doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done, the Power and Glory of God’s grace is sufficient to save anyone. And once you’re saved you’re always saved.
    Ephesians 4:30
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Just believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus and you’re saved. No attending church, no getting religious, no pretending to be holier than thou. The Bible is clear. Just believe to be saved.
Doing ANY kind of works to be saved is a slap in the face of God. You’re telling him that His free gift of salvation, Jesus dying on that cross, was not sufficient to save you.
    Acts 16:31
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

When Jesus (in the Old Heaven); separates His "Sheep: (Born Again's) from satan's "Goats" (Non Born Again's). And Jesus' 600 million true Angels; moves us (Born Again's) to Jesus' Right hand.

Where satan's "False prophet" and his "Beast" (which I believe is satan's 200 million "Fallen" Angels. Also called "Demons") were the first to go to hell.
Revelation 20:10 And the devil (satan) that deceived them (ALL non Born Again's from creation) was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
And then, Jesus commands His Angels; to usher us into the New Jerusalem in the New Heaven. Supported by the New Earth and the New Temple; who IS Jesus. Then He gives us a New Body, New Name and a New Life forever! That will be "Everlasting Life". As Jesus promised to the Born Again's in...

    The Gospel:
    Plain and
    Simple
“But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent
beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your
minds should be corrupted from the simplicity
that is in Christ.” - 2 Corithians 11:3
Ask someone today if they are saved and
you will most likely hear responses like these:
“I have accepted Jesus into my heart.” Or “I
have made him Lord of my life.” “I’ve been
baptized.” “I said a prayer.” Sounds all good
and churchy don’t it; but it is difficult to de-termine whether or not a person actually
knows the gospel that saves them. These use￾less phrases don’t describe a thing about what
the gospel is and has left a devastating effect
of people not knowing what it is that they are
saved from nor how they are saved; which
leaves a more serious effect of people ques￾tioning their salvation.
Let’s not muddy the simplicity of salva￾tion that is in Christ with vague church
sounding phrases that do not communicate
anything. But rather present God’s word with
clarity and assuredness. So here is the gospel:
    plain and simple.
Sin was passed upon all men by one man
Adam, and death is a consequence of this sin
(Rom 5:12). Mankind has an eternal destiny of
condemnation and wrath - Hell - because of
this sin (Rom 6:23). No matter what good
works one might do we are still found sinners
in the sight of our Creator God. And all un￾righteousness and those who follow get in￾dignation and wrath. We cannot be found
righteous for by God’s law we are found sin￾ners (Rom 3:19-20). If we have broken even
one law we are found guilty.
It is for this reason of not being able to
create our own righteousness and being born
in a sinful flesh that we need a savior (Titus
3:5). Christ is that Savior, God manifested in
the flesh, sinless, died in our place on a cross
2000 years ago. Taking upon him the wrath
and judgement that was intended for us sin￾ners. And it is through his bloodshed, burial,
and resurrection on our behalf that we are
able to have peace with God and forgiveness
of our sins (1 Cor 15:1-4, Col 3:14). This good
news is unto all but only those that believe in
it are made righteous in Christ (Romans
    3:22).
It is then after we have heard this good
news of Christ’s righteousness available to us freely, that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit
and we are now part of Christ’s body the
    church (Eph 1:13)
There is nothing that we need to do, no
good works that are required, and no bad
works that can separate us from our new po￾sition in Christ (Romans 8:35-39).
Faith and belief in this information from
    God’s word is the gospel.
The gospel is not accepting Jesus into your
heart. The gospel is not making him lord of
your life, it is not saying a prayer and it is not
    being baptized with water.
So next time someone asks you if you are
saved. Give them the clear assured answer
“Yes And let me tell you why
