My guess it's mostly non-English speakers or ESL fans who didn't get the joke. I think Kiara at this point has made it fairly obvious she's Austrian, but I suppose if you don't really follow her or not familiar with Austria, you'd take her word that she's Australian lol. Especially, now that we have 2 ACTUAL Aussies in HoloEN, it seems more believable.

As part of non-English speakers, even though I joined KFP well after this joke was created, I understood that it was a joke, even with shitty English, so it surprised me to know that there are people who really believed she was from Australia.

Her accent was a dead giveaway since I know someone with a similar accent who just so happened to come from Austria.

I mean she uses the EU timezone, speaks German, has an accent, and had to self correct every time she wanted to say where she lives. I always thought it was fairly obvious but I guess people who are randomly tuning into the stream it might be a bit confusing. Still I always thought it was pretty funny and I enjoyed messing with people in the comments.

There's also the possibility of the streamer in question being in a life abroad type situation like Haachama was.
@@Alex20114 well yes she was doing that when she first debuted but her moving home was a pretty big event and she also made it pretty clear that the reason it was happening was because her visa was expiring

I live like in czech republic - like 10 min drive from Austrian border... and know that a LOT of people confuse Austria with Australia... so I never even imagined that there would be people taking it seriously...
might be influenced by Czech republic - Czechia being often confused with Chechnya and Slovakia with Slovenia so these kinds of jokes are not really that rare when speaking with people overseas...

They are out of loop I suppose. Most Hololive watchers nowadays just straight up calls Austria- Australia and everyone knows so they follow suit. I won't blame anyone who really doesn't know the joke and sees everyone is just taking the joke on the stride. It's gonna give them the wrong idea.
We also have 2 Australians too so the legitimacy of the people saying "Australia" has gone up. Especially if they put either Sana or Bae together with Kiara or just 3 of them on a sentence or paragraph then it will confuse them even more.

People just don’t pay attention. If you watch her stream for an hour or two it would be really hard to still have that misconception I think given all the things she says and does that are extremely European/Austrian. She also talks about cultural traditions more than any other holomem, is very obviously in the EU timezone (and times are mentioned dozens of times during streams), speaks German (including her outro), and has an accent.
Austria is where that art school dropout or something lived. That guy also had a giant ass cannon on two rail tracks which looked so badass.

I asssumed she was from Austria but was living in Australia, I always thought that it was weird, but I never really questioned it past that. Haachama lived in Australia even though she also clearly wasn't Australian, so it didn't seem that unusual.
Well, for anyone who pays attention to the time of streams, there's also the fact that she uses the EU time zone, which would be WAY out of sync with Australia.

She didn't even need to see anything. First was her primary language, Australians don't speak German as a primary language, they speak English primarily, though there is a small number of people who are at least of German ancestry and some may or may not speak German. Add on the fact that she doesn't have an Australian accent, her accent being VERY different from Sana's or Bae's, who basically outed themselves as Australian in one stream with all the Australian slang going around, pretty sure nobody outside Australia refers to McDonalds as Macca's. Also, I know another Austrian in real life and her accent is VERY similar to Kiara's. Then there was the whole Mozart thing, Mozart being an Austrian born in Salzburg and one of my top five favorite composers of all time.
The guy who killed Hitler is also from Austria.

I honestly thought that it was not a joke before, but when she mentioned that she is meeting her mom a couple of times that is when I made the connection.
i knew the country called austria exist.
kiara can speak german, has her chad german mom, move back from japan to somewhere EU timezone and even meet with her old roommate (and cats), also travel to docomi and said she want to visit that restaurant again because it happen to be closed when she went to docomi (implied she's familiar with the place and also close enough to travel there again casually). she also said at one point she didn't live in germany and she keep saying she's from "australia". with all the clues we have, i know exactly she lived in austria.
I kinda fell for it because I only casually watch Kiara and thought her English was hella good. It's better than some native EN members lol
From a purely academic standpoint her English is the best in hololive

@@trysephiroth007 calli has experience teaching English, but kiara learned it from the ground up, and can also speak two other languages fluently. Her linguistic understanding is on a whole other level.

Personally, I thought she wasn't an Aussie native and possibly immigrated to the Outback at first. Aussie-Germans exist, right? But 2 things immediately tipped me off. 1) She's primarily a German speaker, so obvious European ancestry, but two the wink at the "Australia" air quotes. Because Austria and Australia funnily enough have identical sounding names. It took me a while, thinking she was overseas girl living in say Melbourne or Brisbane but with European visa. But I finally caught in on the joke. I thought it was funny for a whole year. My second favorite Austrian joke behind the people convincing Beethoven was Austrian and an art school reject was German. XD

@@thimo8658 If we are precise Mozart was neither German nor Austrian. During his lifetime Salzburg was independent. Now, sometimes people in the HRR were considered "German people" but there was no German nationality and the idea of an unified Germany also came later. So to put this debate to rest: Mozart was Salzburgian.
