    Vancouver Island is one of my favourite places I've visited. I went a while back and headed over to Quadra Island from Campbell River to go kayaking with Orcas. Amazingly friendly and helpful people. Will never forget that experience. We are currently converting our own van, as a Scot, I never anticipated I'd ever get to go again, but this video has made me realise that this is a possibility!

    Not sure who you are but i guess because I'm from Campbell River and live in Victoria the algorithm suggested this! I wasn't planning on watching the entire video but you all are so genuine and heartwarming i couldn't skip forward! Glad you are enjoying the island and all of it's beauty! I've actually never heard of Freyja and look forward to trying it soon! (P.S. your worry about bears is understandable but quite unnecessary 🤣) I've never owned bear spay and see them all the time. Only black bears on the island and they are pretty harmless.

    People on the island are pretty well behaved as far as keeping garbage secured, when the bears are common in town is usually at the end of summer when fruit is ripening - the bears had all my plums this year - but they will go from yard to yard racing apple trees etc. In some municipalities there are bylaws that state you must pick your fruit rather than leave it on the tree. I've heard of a few towns that will send a crew to pick your fruit if you fail to - you are then billed for the service.

      Vancouver Island is mountainous or at least hilly. Summers are dry and the rivers fed with snow melt or from lakes. With moving water and ocean, mosquitoes have few places to breed. The larvae need still, standing water to live in

    No need to rush. Even in winter, it never gets very cold on Vancouver Island. As the locals have probably told you, it rarely even snows and when it does, it doesn't stay because it's too mild. I don't know if it's true, but Wikipedia describes Campbell River as the "Salmon capital of the world." Sure looks like a beautiful area. Must be nice, after all the remote northern driving up to Alaska, Yukon and NWT, to take it easy in such a scenic region. Your hosts seemed very nice and welcoming as well.

      It's funny how towns do that - Cowichan describes itself as the fly fishing capital I think? Again referring to salmon. Personally I think the best salmon run is in Squamish. I lived there for some years when it was still a tiny town with the population of less than 800 - I think its 17,000 now! As far as the salmon run is concerned, it brings thousands of people to go and view the eagles. - over two thousand bald eagles can over winter in the valley, the trees are full of them. Fortunately most people just go to the area that caters for people coming to see the eagles, further downstream (where I lived) the whole area is just heaving with wildlife through fall to spring. Orca hang out at the river mouth to feed on the salmon, seals come up the river, often a mile to follow the fish and the woods are filled with bear, coyotes, cougars that come to fish or dine on the remains discarded by the eagles.
      Its a big run - I'm not sure where it sits in league of most fish, but it's certainly the one I've seen that is most like a snapshot of the whole life cycle created by the salmon. - then again, the town has grown horribly, its possible that some of the wildlife has retreated.

    • @terryomalley1974
      @terryomalley1974 2 года назад +1

      @@passingthroughtime3033 What's your problem. I can say what i want. It was just a comment because Chris had said they wanted to go south before winter and I said no need to rush because winters in the Lower Main land of BC are very mild with little snow. Btw, they haven't been in Vancouver, they've been on Vancouver Island. Two different places. One's a big city and the other is an island filled with wilderness and small towns. Those other places may be nicer in your opinion, but that's just your opinion. And I don't care about your opinion.

    • @terryomalley1974
      @terryomalley1974 2 года назад +1

      @@passingthroughtime3033 I didn't say warm, I said mild. By Canadian standards, which is the country they're in, 42 F is mild. They won't be going anywhere near Miami on their way to Argentina, but they'll probably go through California.

  • @adrianadrian255
    @adrianadrian255 2 года назад

    As you'll have seen, the salmon is incorporated into a lot of native art it is hugely important as the food that Creator gave them. When you are in the lush river valleys, you are in an eco-system that is totally dependent on the fish. Especially when things get cooler, eagles and bears concentrate on the high protein, high fat parts of the fish. The eagles especially will catch a fish, fly back into the trees with it and then only eat the eyes, brains and the belly fat, the rest of the fish is discarded. While some scavengers will move in and eat some, plenty just decays on the forest floor making it incredibly fertile. That enables trees and plants to grow quickly and their roots bind the soil, allowing the river banks to remain solid even during the spring run off.
    The Cowichan river is an important salmon river, the trails that run alongside it were originally trails used by indigenous fishermen who would set up fishing camps along the river and smoke and dry salmon for the winter food supply. It's known that from the Cowichan River - and no doubt others - that when the fish were being processed, the waste was not discarded, it was put on rafts and floated down the river to be used as fertilizer on crops.
    If you go into any decent garden centre on the island or lower mainland, amongst the other bins you will see "sea soil" for sale. A combination of shredded fir bark - readily available from the logging industry, and fish "morts" from the various fish processing plants. It's always the highest priced and the highest prized soil amendment and is in a league of its own as a fertilizer. It is so potent, that as a professional gardener, I'm somewhat wary of putting it onto some customers beds, since it can make them almost impossible to keep up with, nice relatively calm and established flower beds can grow almost uncontrollably once they've had some sea soil added.
