Nah rematch asap. This is a historical rivalry. If either lose the belt then the rivalry doesn't matter and the fight is ruined from a financial standpoint. However from a pure logic standpoint they should fight defend their belts adsp.
About your question about round 4. You score it that way because one fighter is controlling the other fighter. If there were no judge to stand them up, the over the shoulder shots would never win him the fight, eventually the man controlling the other man will eventually end the fight. You know this from the early mma events without time limits. At least IMHO.
There are also many cases where the fighter with controlling position, in attempting to advance to land ground and pound or a submission, loses that control. It's an unknown that can't factor in scoring the fight. We can only go off what actually happened, which was no damage or threatening submissions. That said, I gave the round to Makhachev. On a side note, it looked like Volkanovski landed a few of his over the shoulder shots on his own chin.
Thats only true if the person being controlled needs to invest energy in order for the position not worsen. But if the person controlling is the one wasting energy trying to get the finish, he will eventually have to give up the position
In regards to the P4P rankings a fair question might be why Makhachev was basically given Khabib's reputation just for being his protégé. It's not as if Islam has cleared out the 155 lb division.
Exactly what I took from this fight. Though I do believe he’s a more complete fighter than khabib, his IQ may be suspect.. So either Islam is overhyped or Volk is Batman with prep time.
@@TheScience69 That's a good point. Either way I look at Makhachev's record and see an impressive win over Olivera and then...what exactly? The win against Volk is nice but he's a featherweight. At 155 Makhachev's second most impressive victory is over a then 23 year old Arman Tsarukyan I guess?

the scoring base is on damage when it favours whoever the promotion wants to win but all the sudden were basing the fight on control this goes back and forth with whoever the promotion seems to be more "profitable"
It’s odd how they scored Brenner v Zukhugov (opening fight on early prelims) It was consistent with how they scored Pimblett v Gordon But both times I completely disagreed with the judges I think they have very specific criteria that goes deeper than the 3 categories they mention
It's not based on damage though; it's based on "impact." Impact is an ambiguous term but damage is worse because it leads people to factor in things like cuts and bruises.
@@BeigeFrequency "Impact includes visible evidence such as swelling and lacerations. Impact shall also be assessed when a fighter’s actions, using striking and/or grappling, lead to a diminishing of their opponents’ energy, confidence, abilities and spirit." - Unified Rules However, clinching your opponent against the fence and leaning on him, seems to be subjective in whether it can win a round.
Damn bruh you gotta upload more frequently, I always forget about your channel man you make some great content This fight shows the judging didn't get any better since the rule change , judging fights off damage is dumb and very very subjective, imo this fight should've been a draw or a ud by volk. Great video as always, but I kind of disagree with the idea of an immediate rematch at 12:36 I think a rematch will hold up both the 145 and 155 division. Yair is next in line for 145 since he's the interim champ and at 155, the next contender should be Dariush. Guy is on a 8 fight win streak and just beat Gamrot.
The hardest strike on round 3 was basically an elbow that cut Volk. Listen on the commentary around (0:42) remaining on round 3, Volk's cut on the forehead was mentioned by Anik. Basically that round was Islam's if you base it on damage and power strikes.
Pretty sure it was Fedor vs Co Cop. Or Randy vs Chuck, or a Chuck vs Tito, light heavyweight was the glamor division for a long time before the lighter weight guys got any attention.
@@zachsawyer2067 I agree with you. GSP and BJ were 2 of the most skilled fighters ever, whereas the fights he listed were super popular fighters but nowhere near as well rounded. That was like the best PFP matchup that this fight was made out to be.
Bad comparison imo, Sabatello wasn’t doing anything on the feet, Islam was getting the better of Alex on the feet in the rounds where he established ground control. Seems like people are willfully ignoring that islam won the match largely because of what he did on the feet, not the grappling.
@@mua2 It was a very close and very good fight. I think both men underestimated each other in their own strengths and I was amazed at Islam's success on the feet both here and against Charles when he won the title. I just think I could see it scored either way
Makhachev performed far better in Volk's area of strength (standup) evidenced partly by the many times Volk himself acknowledged hard shots, than Volk performed in Makhachev's area of strength (the ground). However, Makhachev definitely underestimated Volk which is partly why he didn't dominate like all his other fights. There should be a rematch & if so, I think Makhachev wins much more convincingly.
I think a rematch would favor volk. Knowing his wrestling is good enough to hold off Islam he can do more with the striking and put on a much more dominant performance
i dont know if you think youre talking highly about makhachev here but its way more insulting to say that islam undestimated his opponent and didnt took his training camp seriously than just admitting volk showed good defence on the ground.
I'm a very casual UFC viewer. However the style you present and layout a topic manages to captivate my interest and care. Bravo and for old time sale #TeamBeige
It did amount to something though. He put Volk in a position he couldn't escape. Instead of yelling at him he could've worked harder to escape. He didn't though because the threat of the submission.
@@lindseyormsbee That is where things get a bit murky imo. You can only score the control like that IF the effective striking/grappling was equal. It's priority based, not added. I think adding grappling control time to the criteria for effective grappling would clear this up, but I think it would also be bad for the sport.
no my friend there is a differewnce when you are in the dominant position or in the submissive position in scoring. its the equivalent of jabbing in boxing, you are not attacking with your dominant hand and the jab is always there, should we score jabs different from straights and hooks by the main arm?
i feel like the 4th round backpack argument should be looked at the same way the shevchenko vs santos fight was seen. even though santos was controlling shev, she didnt do enough damage as valentina did to fully get the rounds
Islam beat Volk on the feet for the first 1.5min before that, as explained. Even Volk said on Helwani that he lost the 4th. Valentina vs Santos was different. Santos didn’t win on the feet in those later rounds and when she did control her, she literally got zero offense off while Valentina was getting more damaging shots off than Volks pitter patter punches + Santos didn’t have her back for the same length.
I just rewatched the fight. Santos had Shevchenkos back for the last 1.5min of rounds 1&3. She was losing the first 3.5min of those rounds, but not by much. 2/3 judges gave her the first round and all 3 gave her the third round. The one judge that didn’t give her the first isn’t far fetched, in my opinion, as she was winning 2/3 of that round before getting her back taken, as opposed to Volk losing on the feet, and then, like i said earlier, she was actually punching Santos with her back taken and snapping Santos’ head back pretty good. 2/3 judges also gave her round 2, where she again was winning on the feet but spent like a minute with Santos on top. Santos literally did nothing with her top position, though. Valentina had her in full guard and was landing decent punches. Valentina won rounds 4&5 clearly and per all the judges. Volk clearly won the 5th and edged out the 3rd, but to argue he won anything more is a stretch.
I agree that the grappling rules need to be reevaluated. I think we could use a very simple criteria. Control regardless of position should mean, you are doing what you want to do, your opponent cannot do what he wants to do. If the opponent is punching you repeatedly, and you can't stop him, it does not matter what position you are in, you are not controlling the fight.
So by your logic, Makachev still dominated the 4th, because Volk was stuck and couldn't do anything exept punching low power punches over his shoulder. He couldn't stop Makachev from controlling him.
@@t.s.p187 that is the opposite of my logic. Islam did not want to be punched. He could not stop volk from punching him. He was not able to make any serious submission attempts. That is not control. To make it clearer, imagine looping that part of the fight for 20 minutes. Islam's face would be ground beef and Volk would look no different. You should not get points for pure postion in MMA. Position in theory gives you better opportunity to do damage than your opponent. Being in the position is your advantage. You don't need extra points allotted for the position. In the rare cases where the opponent is outdamaging you from the bottom, you are not controlling him and you are losing the fight.
Agree with ur Rd 4 analysis... I think the distinction should be defining what 'control time' is... Islam had the body lock, but i wouldnt call it control time because Islam couldn't advance and Alex looked as likely to break loose as Islam looked to score damage or a submission, so it was more of a deadlock
Team Kreg for the 2nd place true victory! And I’m a competition noob, but to my understanding in most BJJ rule sets Islam holding Volk in a body triangle for minutes without advancing position or landing a sub would probably only count for the initial guard pass and pin, im not sure how the submission attempts would be ruled though but regardless in an MMA rule set I definitely favor Volk winning that exchange because he was resisting like the Spartans at Thermopylae while keeping himself pretty safe and being able to talk
I think round 4 is a clear Islam round. He won on the feet before the takedown, and while he didn't damage Volkonovski, it's clear he was the one who was in a dominant position. To explain it as best as I can, Volkonovski was simply unable to move if he wanted to, while Islam could at any time. I also don't understand the missed strike analogy since, using that logic, any form of grappling is ineffective unless it causes a finish or tears a ligament.
Yeah, if someone is on your back, you're losing. You can't finish them from that position. The best you can do is force a stalemate, as Volk did, or escape.
His analogy is a complete fallacy. I’ve never heard such a terrible argument. Taking the back is not effective grappling?🥴 How can we take this guy serious? He simply wants to change the rules because he didn’t like the outcome of the fight. Instead of being a professional and sticking to the rules. He gives his opinion to try to change the rules because he doesn’t like it. To don’t like something is not an argument. Stick to the rules. I can make up rules if things Volkanovski did. I can make a rule that Volkanovski can’t stay in a position and holding the arm instead of trying to get up.
@@fifaelregala2610 They don’t believe that. They are just frustrated. They are so frustrated. They have to invent new rules because they don’t like the outcome. It’s not genuine. It’s pure frustration. If Volkanovski had the back of Islam. They would be celebrating the whole week. They wouldn’t have any problem with it. He would have made hundreds of videos how impressive it is that Volkanovski took Islam back.
@@seanskywalka5172 Gotcha. I personally don't interpret that reference necessarily as an accusation. Just talking about the issue doesn't mean someone thinks Makhachev is guilty.
@@BiggieTrismegistus come on man. Theres not even a question mark after it. And then it should P4P over Volk. It's obvious that the guy's a salty Volk fan
Idk about the "same size" argument because if Volk was the same size his skills would be possibly slower or different. I just can't get behind that argument and the fact that they said the pound for pound title was on the line. I just feel bad for Islam, he literally won nothing in this fight. I love your videos, might not agree completely but you are awesome!
Dude, such an amazing fight! People are still debating the result online, and everything that has happened since then has only served to fuel the continued discussion. I can't wait to see Volk vs. Yair, but I also want Volk to run it back with Islam, and I really can't choose which fight I want more.
I think the Yair fight will be super interesting. I imagine Volk wins somewhat handily, but Yair is so flashy and such a unique fighter. Seeing a fresh matchup personally excites me
I still have a hard time deciding how it would go if Volk was 5'10 with a 74" inch reach, his leverage from being stockier and shorter worked to his advantage in the grappling defense aspect. As a fellow fire hydrant I can say it does help keep control in takedown defense when you have lower center of gravity and shorter but stronger arms. So I think the fight would play out differently if he was more Islam's size
That’s a pretty massive “if” though. He trained, and fight’s specifically due to how his build is. ( Maybe, not as much as say Mike Tyson, or Wonderboy) The but if game, is just wild to play. And yeah, it’d be interesting. Though Islam has dismantled folks who are more similar to his build.
There is some truth in this. Volk's shortness definitely helped to some degree. On the other hand, I think a light weight sized Volk would also have a pretty substantial strength advantage. He would be a brick wall imo.
06:50 pretty sure Volk did...you have to understand his mindset and work ethic. The Dagestani guys don't share thier super secret techniques with the rest of the world like other disciplines so thats why people look so lost against them, but the great fighters of the era have taken bits and pieces that they learned while fighting them and incorporated it into their games and there's enough tape for a master to get a sense of what is coming and what to expect. Alex is a master, and he proved that in a fight that should have by all rights been considered a draw, but the UFC would never let that happen because the UFC hates genuine competition and it's fighters. it's why they let Tony Ferguson fight 4 months after a KO loss so bad that it was genuinely scary and it's clear he was terrified of further damage.
Btw, i don't a rematch can happen anytime soon, there's like a month left before ramadan, and islam won't fight anyone in ramadan it's not allowed. So we're looking for around three months untill that fight happens.
Glurp Glurp VOLK IS THE BEST Glurp Glurp... We should always base fights soley off the last minute of the fifth round and ignore the rest. He fought a guy he didn't have to cut weight, travel, or fly on a plane (it can absolutely affect your body) I know we only allow fighters we like to make excuses but these are the key points a lot of so-called fans are completely ignoring.
You'll never catch me arguing about who won what round because they should fight until someone wins. Decisions and judges shouldn't even be in the equation.
Backpacking should always be prioritized over ineffectual backwards strikes. The idea being that this is a fighting simulation and taking someones back would mean the end of a fight since you would perform blows to the back of the head in that position, outside an MMA ruleset.
Exactly I'm sitting here like "Volk has killer submission defense" its not Islam's fault hes fighting a little orangutan man, whats he supposed to do let go of the back or go for some never seen before sub. Islam's choices are to either let go or go for a rear naked choke Volk knows this so instead of wasting energy fighting to get free he just defends the attempts until the ref intervenes or the round ends.
backward strikes does not get any point, cause it causes no damage but maybe annoy the opponent. while stuck in a body triangle from the back, is always at risk, no matter how good a fighter in grappling, there's a reason why coach always teaches students not to gave your back worst body triangle, cause it's dangerous position.
I'm pretty sure they score control which would mean Islam definitely won round 4. I was rooting for Volk and was super impressed but knew he didn't win that fight

Fuck that. Rematch. The Islam fans are absolutely shitting themselves and don't want it.
@@mikeymouse3941 he didn't get screwed imo, fighting charles is the correct thing to do since fiziev is on a 6 fight win streak and is fighting gaethje. if fiziev beats geathje who is a big name and makes it exciting he would be riding a 7 fight win streak with a win over a big name in the top 5, and would even be ranked higher than beneil. if beneil chose to sit around they might easily give it to fiziev.
@@mw6836 Beneil is on an 8 fight win streak over better completion than Fiziev. He deserved the shot at Islam over Volk, but it is what it is. Fiziev doesn’t deserve it with a win over Justin Gaethje, at least not until the Beneil has fought Oliviera. If Beneil loses and Fiziev wins, then he would be next up. But if Beneil loses, he got screwed because he should’ve already gotten his shot at the belt.
@@TheScience69 lol I’m a Volk fan and I do think he would win a rematch, but it would be close. Sure, Islam gassed in the last round but it happens and it’s not like Volk will steam roll him. Great insights and opinions, thank you!
You're back! I've been watching Florida Man over and over waiting for a new video
Excellent video and review.
The fight was great, but a 49-46 was crazy in my opinion
How? It's perfectly reasonable to give Islam 1,2,3,4. I'd even say that's more reasonable than 48-47 Volkanovski.
@@fifaelregala2610 no. just no.
@@fifaelregala2610 Under the old scoring guidelines, it'd be arguable... but maybe not reasonable, lol. But under the new guidelines, it's RIDICULOUS to give Islam 3 rounds when he did nothing with the position in one of them except to hold on and eat punches... which is exactly why the guidelines were changed to try to prevent dumbass judges from giving rounds to guys who just lay and pray (or hold back position and pray) while getting bombed by the active fighter that they are just holding.
@@linx4677 why? Just because you like Volk more. It's pretty clear the second-round strike was not a knockdown, and Islam hit him with the cleaner strikes. Round 3 is razer close and could go either way, but Islam landed more significant strikes and had more control time. Rounds 1 and 4 are clear for Islam.
@fifa el regala got nothing to do with me "liking volk more". Its just that there isn't a better argument for 4 rounds to 1 for Islam.

Yeah, usual excuse. Unacceptable.
Eh, the buzz isn't dead. That might've been the greatest fight I've ever seen and even people who aren't as closely following seem enthralled by it still
I think it's unfair to not follow through with the deal that was agreed upon. P4P on the line and Lightweight belt on the line. That was the deal. It's unfair that Islam took a massive risk and got nothing for it. Got disrespected and falsely accused of cheating. CKB showed their true colours, they are whiny sore losers.

Rematch is a must ! But let yair and beneil have their shot first
What if Beneil takes the belt off Makhachev though? Wouldn't Volk be better off fighting him (regardless of whether or not he beats Yair)?
Nah rematch asap. This is a historical rivalry. If either lose the belt then the rivalry doesn't matter and the fight is ruined from a financial standpoint. However from a pure logic standpoint they should fight defend their belts adsp.
Didn’t know you covered mma. I like it
About your question about round 4.
Letsss goo new beige upload
In regards to the P4P rankings a fair question might be why Makhachev was basically given Khabib's reputation just for being his protégé. It's not as if Islam has cleared out the 155 lb division.
Exactly what I took from this fight. Though I do believe he’s a more complete fighter than khabib, his IQ may be suspect.. So either Islam is overhyped or Volk is Batman with prep time.
Not even his protoge. They're like the same age more or less. Islam joined the ufc not long after kebab
@BiggieTrismegistus bobby greene at catchweight so doesn't even count, and Dan hooker who took the fight on short notice I'm pretty sure. It's just because kebab fled the sport, so all his fans are pretending he tagged Islam in on his career like that's how it works. They're all pretending that Islam has accomplished what kebab accomplished because they're friends. It was a joke everyone comparing his streak with volks lol. Not even close to equal level of competition. Islam was there the whole time kebab was, and no-one gave a crap until kebab left so they moved on to the next.

the scoring base is on damage when it favours whoever the promotion wants to win but all the sudden were basing the fight on control this goes back and forth with whoever the promotion seems to be more "profitable"
It’s odd how they scored Brenner v Zukhugov (opening fight on early prelims)
It was consistent with how they scored Pimblett v Gordon
But both times I completely disagreed with the judges
I think they have very specific criteria that goes deeper than the 3 categories they mention
It's not based on damage though; it's based on "impact." Impact is an ambiguous term but damage is worse because it leads people to factor in things like cuts and bruises.
@@BeigeFrequency "Impact includes visible evidence such as swelling and lacerations. Impact shall also be assessed when a fighter’s actions, using striking and/or grappling, lead to a diminishing of their opponents’ energy, confidence, abilities and spirit." - Unified Rules

This fight shows the judging didn't get any better since the rule change , judging fights off damage is dumb and very very subjective, imo this fight should've been a draw or a ud by volk. The judge that gave a 49-46 scorecard should never be allowed to judge another mma fight ever again

Absolutely correct about the scoring being a big issue and I felt it went the other way in Stots vs Sabatello during very similar rounds
Scoring is not a big issue.
He simply didn’t like the outcome and wants a change of rule to benefit his favourite fighters.
Yeah, It feels like every other fight people change their mind about this
Bad comparison imo, Sabatello wasn’t doing anything on the feet, Islam was getting the better of Alex on the feet in the rounds where he established ground control.
I just think I could see it scored either way
Loved this introspective look at the crazy fallout from the Volk Islam fight
Thanx for the video, man. I also dig how your sketch accurately represented the inbred unibrow.

At the time, I felt like volkanovski won rounds 2,3 and 5 but honestly, I have no idea how to accurately score this fight.
100% agree with the holding / grappling someone shouldn't really count for much, if it doesn't amount to anything.
@@lindseyormsbee 😊 no nh
It was such an awesome fight
no my friend there is a differewnce when you are in the dominant position or in the submissive position in scoring. its the equivalent of jabbing in boxing, you are not attacking with your dominant hand and the jab is always there, should we score jabs different from straights and hooks by the main arm?
What's your take on the whole Israel vs Alex 3-1 situation and Israel turning heel?
i feel like the 4th round backpack argument should be looked at the same way the shevchenko vs santos fight was seen. even though santos was controlling shev, she didnt do enough damage as valentina did to fully get the rounds
0:39 11 fight win streak since Islam's last loss and Volkanovski a 12 fight UFC streak, but 22 if you count pre-UFC in that streak.
Lol what are you even on about dude ?
You and Napoleon Blownapart are the top 2 creative forces on RUclips.
You guys should collaborate.
Taking the back is not effective grappling?🥴
How can we take this guy serious? He simply wants to change the rules because he didn’t like the outcome of the fight. Instead of being a professional and sticking to the rules. He gives his opinion to try to change the rules because he doesn’t like it.
To don’t like something is not an argument. Stick to the rules.
I can make up rules if things Volkanovski did.
I can make a rule that Volkanovski can’t stay in a position and holding the arm instead of trying to get up.
@@thetraffic849 yeah it was such a weird argument. I genuinely have no clue how anyone sane scored round 4 for Volkanovski.

PvP vs ml4ml still has me 🤣
Dude, such an amazing fight!
Seeing a fresh matchup personally excites me
I agree with every word.
( Maybe, not as much as say Mike Tyson, or Wonderboy)
The but if game, is just wild to play.
DJ and cejudo did a video about why islam failed to control volk. I think their video is a good breakdown on the wrestling aspect of the fight.
I disagree. Volk's cut to 145 is comparable to Islams cut to 155 and he still has insane endurance and pace in the later rounds.
He's the smaller guy 😅. You can't use "didn't have to cut weight" as an excuse when fighters cut weight to GAIN an advantage.
You'll never catch me arguing about who won what round because they should fight until someone wins. Decisions and judges shouldn't even be in the equation.
I think we need a follow-up on the rematch and Volks mental battles.
100% agree rules need to change, Pride rule were the best, judge the entire fight on Damage alone, that's it.
Backpacking should always be prioritized over ineffectual backwards strikes. The idea being that this is a fighting simulation and taking someones back would mean the end of a fight since you would perform blows to the back of the head in that position, outside an MMA ruleset.
That isn't what the scoring criteria say. We can't make stuff up based on our own hypothetical tastes. Or at least we shouldn't
@@BeigeFrequency but in the case where ineffective strikes are pitted against this position I think this should win out
@@Poogoo701 the way i see it, you're so much farther away from a finish punching backwards than you are when you're on someones back lol
backward strikes does not get any point, cause it causes no damage but maybe annoy the opponent. while stuck in a body triangle from the back, is always at risk, no matter how good a fighter in grappling, there's a reason why coach always teaches students not to gave your back worst body triangle, cause it's dangerous position.
