Great to see three Lancashire stalwarts together.
Paul Allott possesses a marvellous, laid-back, intelligent interviewing style; a lesson to all young interviewers learning their trade.
Had the pleasure of watching all three: David Lloyd opening the batting with Barry Wood, including the never to be forgotten 'twilight' Gillete Cup semi-final at Old Trafford; Paul Allott ploughing on manfully on unresponsive tracks at Old Trafford; and Mike Atherton opening the batting in his usual patient, unhurried style.

My wife and I attended a C4 Cricket Roadshow masterclass with Sachin (2005?) at Hampshire Rose Bowl (as it was then). Mike and Ravi were on duty there. Ravi, a very tall, imposing man, was a wonderfully gracious host. He took my wife, who couldn’t see very well from the back, to the front so she could see Sachin. I’ll never forget that. He seemed a real people person. Being in the entertainment business is a recent meme in cricket. I could relate a litany of quite unpleasant professional players with the fans. Ravi was exceptional. Allan Donald was an other lovely man with the fans.

The APOLLO is still going strong! The Apsley Cottage next to it still a great pub.

Great to hear Bumble and Atherton. I would like to differ regarding Lancashire's greatest player. I noticed that Bumble avoided the issue directly. Statham took as many First Class wickets as Anderson, they were just distributed differently between Tests and County because cricket scheduling has changed so much. Statham's averages are lower than Anderson's. Don;t get me wrong. Anderson is a treasure but I happen to think Statham was as good. Hey each have an end that bears their names. I'm also a bit disappointed that Atherton trotted out the 1-17 England record prior to McCullum-Stokes. The players have improved; that's why they did better. We got rid of the likes of Burns, Roy, Malan, Hameed etc. and Harry Brook came along while Duckett is having a second England career (which, to be fair, may be attributable to the confidence he now feels playing a game more suited to him). Plus 4 of those 17 were the whitewash in Oz.

if you go with best bowler, prime for prime, who ever played (a reasonable number of games for Lancashire) surely it has to be Wasim Akram? No disrespect but I think a lot people would have Wasim as the best ever left arm quick of the modern era.

@@MrBobsmith34 Are you saying he was the best or the best leftie? On straight stats his County average was 21.6, Statham's 16.4. Not denying that he was a great bowler but it's not clear he was a better bowler for Lancs than Statham.

@@russhouldin5774 I take your point but by Lancashire greatest ever player do you mean the player who performed the best for Lancashire or the best player (in terms of global (including test matches etc) perfomance) who played a good amount for Lancashire? So James Anderson actually played more test matches than other FC matches. In terms of achievements at county level I think Akram ranks Anderson- one day successes etc. So if you were to make the case Anderson is Lancashire greatest (as Atherton did) you have to make it on the latter criteria. As great a bowler as Statham was and Anderson is I just think if go by the latter citeria and throw in batting that of the 3 he edges it (admittedly I am too young to have actuallu seen Statham play)

@@MrBobsmith34 I really dont think there can be any argument about who was the greatest player for Lancashire. Statham took 2260 wickets @ 16.4 apiece, Anderson 1114 @ 24.7 and Akram 1042 @ 21.6. Statham played a handfull of one-day matches and T20 so no comparison can be made. On tests his average is 24.8, Anderson's 26.5 and Akram's 23.6. The latter two played many more tests. Without going into against whom they took wickets and where (home/away) and who were their rivals for wickets I'd say there's nothing between the three. Akram was much the best bat. However, Statham was a superior outfielder, not just against Anderson and Akram but in general. I think we can agree that all were among the greats of the game and Lancs was/is lucky to have had them.

More of a Grumpy Old Man comment here, but Anderson and Broad took their test wickets because they played an awful lot of tests - and not much else. Their haul of first class wickets has been surpassed by many bowlers. In terms of stats, Trueman averages 4.58 wickets per test, Anderson averages 3.74 wickets a test.

@@billystephens3149 Longevity isn't so surprising when their workloads are very carefully managed by the EWCB; teir test performances are restricted - called rotation! - and they are often not allowed to play for their counties. How many first class overs have they bowled?
