"I'm living in a foreign country now, but I'm bound to cross the line. Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine. If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born! 'Come in', she said, 'I'll give you Shelter From the Storm.' "
Another great and heartfelt song. It is clearly about his wife, Sara. He married her in 1965, when he was indeed in the midst of a "storm" in the sense of how complicated and high pressured his life had become. She gave him the shelter and the peaceful refuge he needed to get away from all that. They were seemingly perfect for each other at the time. The marriage lasted very well for 8 years, and they had 4 children, and then it started to fall apart in 1974 when he started touring again.
That's why he says toward the end of the song, "Now there's a wall between us. Something that's been lost. I took too much for granted. I got my signals crossed. Just to think that it all began on an uneventful morn. 'Come in', she said, 'I'll give you Shelter From the Storm.' "
As for the Biblical imagery, well there's Biblical imagery woven all through Dylan's writings right from the beginning of his career. He's certainly not saying that he himself is Christ. He's saying that he (and everyone else) goes through struggles in life that have much in common with the struggles that are depicted in the story of Christ, because it's a universal story that applies to everyone. We have our "temptation in the desert". We face the rejection of people in our own hometown who think they know all about us and therefore discount us. We face despair in "the Garden". We get falsely judged and accused by others. We get crucified for speaking the truth. These symbols can apply to anyone at different times in their lives.

Live Bob is great, since he rarely plays a song the same as on his album’s, but I’d start with the album versions, due to them being formed in a more thoughtful and controlled environment for his unique, whimsical approach to music.

    • @debjorgo
      @debjorgo 2 года назад

@@GD-rd6ig IMO, the album version is going to be the best version. Dylan has about 5 songs where the live version sounds completely different from the studio track and are as good or better. Technically, I've contradicted myself. But since they sound so different, they are like different songs. Take the song Maggie's Farm. I'd recommend the studio track. But if you accidently get one of the live versions, there are at least two that sound like different song from each other and they both are great, I'd still recommend after that to listen to the studio version, because you still hadn't heard it.

The best way to listen to this song is by listening to the whole album: Blood on Tracks. The overall theme of the album is his separation from his wife Sara. All the songs on the album deal with that to some degree. If you listen to the full album the songs start making a lot more sense.

That's an interesting thought. Dylan's songs often work simultaneously on several different levels, and that could be one of them. I think he writes not by plan, but just by instinct and the feeling that's moving in him at the time, and that's what produces the greatest poetry. It can say several different things at the same time.

He’s had many great albums, but to me “Blood on the Tracks” is the most powerful. It was written as his marriage disintegrated, and every emotion he must have gone through, from disbelief, anger, panic, begging, grief, scorn, nostalgia, and acceptance all appear. It’s so raw and painful, but presented so beautifully that it’s hard to listen to but impossible not to. Listen to “A Simple Twist of Fate”, for instance, and try to feel nothing. Every song is great, and if you’ve ever had a painful breakup the album can be incredibly cathartic. It’s an album where every listen brings something you didn’t notice before. A desert island record.

Very subjective your choice and many people's choice tbf. For me having listemed to all of his songs I'd have to call out Blonde on Blonde as his greatest, but I think many would agree with you. Why I dont agree is because ALL the songs on BOTT are accoustic and slightly subdued and downbeat in vibe, even the more upbeat songs and it's a bit of a wrench to hear the album play through. Not so on Blonde on Blonde which is smokey, mournful, tender a tad vengeful and his excitement is present like he just wrote the best song of his career, just way more upbeat. More emotions other than just sadness which seems to be throughout Blood on the Tracks. I think Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands is one of his sweetest ever songs and in one composition eclipses the entire BOTT's album in the vibe you like, then you have Visions of Johanna of course..stunning. It just has the energy of a younger man, its as simple as that which is ever present, rife throughout the album when comparing the two side by side. 👍😁

Great song, and yes there is a fair amount of religious symbolism in this song however you interpret it. And frankly, I’m sure Dylan wants his songs to be open to personal interpretation. But like others, I really recommend listening to the album version of this song. Blood on the Tracks is my favorite Dylan album, and ranks in the top five of my all-time favorite albums. It is probably the one I would take to a desert island if I could only have one album. The songs are phenomenal and I always think Dylan’s voice is at its best. I would even go so far as to say there is a lushness to the album. And I don’t think that is a usual descriptor for Dylan.

I believe it was the poet T.S. Eliot who, when asked about the meaning of one of his poems, said that there was no one correct answer. A poem means something different to each reader. Even the same person might interpret a song differently in their 50s than they did in their 20s. The same is true of Bob Dylan’s lyrics. I hope I got the poet right, but college was a long time ago for me. Plus, T.S. Eliot is deep. It gave me much food for thought over my life, however. There are not right answers sometimes. There are thoughtful answers, though, and yours was thoughtful. Thank you for another reaction to the magnificent Bob Dylan.

The flow of the delivery is outstanding here it’s so smooth in a “shouting” tone and he uses these melodic embellishments on some verses and words.
On the song meaning/lyrics itself I’ve always thought there was something deeper than “oh woman is good she’ll protect me from the storm” there’s lots of biblical references the way I interpret the song is the “her and she” who is offering to come inside and take shelter from the storm the “storm” being the troubles the characters are facing in the verses yes I said characters I believe this song is working on a multiple person scale and not a single person scale and the “her and she” is the church or faith,
this verse “if I could only turn back the clock to when god and her were born, come in she said, I’ll give ya shelter from the storm” when god was “born” the church/faith was born.
Dylan has always used biblical themes in his music ever since the start of his career some times satirical in nature early on then it kind of changed in 1967s John Wesley Harding album apparently in Dylan’s retreat and hiatus up to Woodstock after his drug fuelled and rough state during the 1966 world tour and he retreated and became a family man raising his young family reading scripture and whole heaps of books and writing songs just hitting a reset button on himself and going back to “basics”.

Live Dylan is generally a more intense Dylan, while the studio or album versions will give you a more collective, concise Bob Dylan, centered on storytelling and detail.. Check out "Stuck Inside of Mobile, With the Memphis Blues Again", "Maggie's Farm", "I Want You", "Tangled Up In Blue", or "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"..

Wow, I never heard this version before, but I like it. I liked the contemporary stuff Bob was recording in the studio in '75 - '76; That whole "Desire" album is my favorite - sample "HURRICANE", "BLACK DIAMOND BAY", "ISIS", "MOZAMBIQUE", etc. Blood On The Tracks album probably next.

Bob makes you get your head around what the song means to him, and then the song makes you get your head around what it means to you personally. Creators who can do that are true geniuses. I'm talking about poetry not entertainment. There's a different between the two, getting deep verses having fun. Both are necessary. But few can be true poets.

I think u have to listen to his songs in the context of what albums they appear on.
Because this is from blood on the tracks (his divorce album) I feel there's a lot of heartbreak, conflict & longing in the lyrics as there is throughout that specific album

Uploader, although I am interested in what you have to say about the religious aspects of the song, and I have also thought about them from similar angles many times before myself, it's also worth noting that this was by no ways new to Dylan's way of thinking.
Even way back in the earliest days of his first albums when there was no suggestion of a religious conversion there was always a strong Judeo-Christian influence in which he explored Biblical narratives and wove them into seemingly normal everyday themes within a given song. But what one person sees another will see differently and neither are necessarily wrong because his work is multi-layered and works on different esoteric levels.
And from performance to performance, he plays the songs diffently to how he originally recorded them; and even then he often records several takes on a song, and then when it's done live he often then goes and changes the lyrics, or even the melody and/or tempo.
Dylan rarely offers his songs as definitive within their selves. Each one is an interpretation, waiting to be reinterpreted, meaning different things at different times to different people and that is the way that it has always been with Bob Dylan.
Dylan himself said in 1965: "I define nothing. Definition destroys."
Other than that, yeah, its a great video and you obviously got a lot out of it. Nice work. 👍

Great job Chod. Whoa, Carlos Santana playing with him! (Or was it?) It's a great song, this version a nice variation from the studio version. But the studio one is better, tones following the lyrics better, more like old Dylan (fewer instruments, forward vocals).

Man, I don't know how Bob Dylan could find all those lyrics. You should do "Hurricane." The lyrics could fill a chapter in a book, and yet the song flies right by. Here they are - apologies for taking up about ten inches of space. Edit: more like 24 inches.
Pistols shots ring out in the bar room night
Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall
She sees the bartender in a pool of blood
Cries out, "My God, they killed them all!"
Here comes the story of the Hurricane
The man the authorities came to blame
For something that he never done
Put him in a prison cell but one time he could-a been
    The champion of the world
Three bodies lying there does Patty see
And another man named Bello moving around mysteriously
"I didn't do it", he says and he throws up his hands
"I was only robbing the register. I hope you understand
"I saw them leaving," he says and he stops
"One of us had better call up the cops."
And so Patty calls the cops
And they arrive on the scene
    With their red lights flashing
In the hot New Jersey night
Meanwhile far away in another part of town
Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are driving around
Number one contender for the middleweight crown
Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down
When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road
Just like the time before and the time before that
In Paterson that's just the way things go
If you're black you might as well not show up on the street
'Less you wanna draw the heat
Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops
Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowling around
He said, "I saw two men running out. They looked like middleweights
They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates."
And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head
Cop said, "Wait a minute, boys, this one's not dead."
So they took him to the infirmary
And though this man could hardly see
They told him he could identify the guilty men
Four in the morning and they haul Rubin in
They took him to the hospital and they brought him upstairs
The wounded man looks up through his one dying eye
Says, "Why'd you bring him in here for? He ain't the guy!"
Here's the story of the Hurricane
The man the authorities came to blame
For something that he never done
Put in a prison cell but one time he could-a been the champion of the world
Four months later the ghettos are in flame
Rubin's in South America fighting for his name
While Arthur Dexter Bradley's still in the robbery game
And the cops are putting the screws to him looking for somebody to blame
"Remember that murder that you happened in a bar?
Remember you said you saw the getaway car?
You think you'd like to play ball with the law?
Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw running that night?
Don't forget that you are white"
Arthur Dexter Bradley said, "I'm really not sure."
The cop said, "A boy like you could use a break
We got you for the motel job and we're talking to your friend Bello
Now you don't wanna have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow
You'll be doing society a favor
That son of a bitch is brave and getting braver
We want to put his ass in stir
We want to pin this triple murder on him
    He ain't no Gentleman Jim."
Rubin could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much
"It's my work," he'd say, "and I do it for pay
And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way
    Up to some paradise
Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice
And ride a horse along a trail."
But then they took him to the jailhouse
Where they try to turn a man into a mouse
All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance
The trial was a pig-circus. He never had a chance
The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums
To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger
No one doubted that he pulled the trigger
And though they could not produce the gun
The DA said he was the one who did the deed
    And the all-white jury agreed
    Rubin Carter was falsely tried
The crime was murder 'one'. Guess who testified?
Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied
And the newspapers-they all went along for the ride
How can the life of such a man
Be in the palm of some fool's hand?
    To see him obviously framed
Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed
    To live in a land
    Where justice is a game
Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties
Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell
An innocent man in a living hell
Yes, that's the story of the Hurricane
But it won't be over 'til they clear his name
And give him back the time he's done
Put in a prison cell but one time he could-a been
    The champion of the world

Wilburn - I really enjoy your channel, obviously as I'm subscribed. I like that you are not musically illiterate so your reactions have more weight to them. I also like that you listen to the whole song before criticizing - and that if you don't like a tune you say so. However, that being said - may I make a suggestion about Mr. Dylan? I don't have a channel- although I've thought about it like everyone else in America - but in the case of Bob Dylan I put forth the idea that a person's first listen to and reaction to, would be best served by his original album material. Why do I suggest this for him particularly? Because as most huge lifetime Dylan fans will tell you - live Mr. Bob is often the worst butcher of his own songs. My heart pains that your first listen to this absolutely classic song - off quiet possibly his most brilliant LP "Blood on the Tracks" has been this sped up and almost parodied version. And what's funny is that this live performance is not nearly as brutal as many of his live or bootlegged efforts. I've seen Dylan live many times, and have all his album's. He constantly abuses his own compositions live for some reason - and therefore, and sometimes purposely I feel, his audience. I've seen him at the first show of a new album tour and he and the band are great - then I've seen the same show at the end of the tour, and I swear you can barely recognize the tunes. Now a really together band or artist can pull off changing their own compositions as I know your aware, but Bob changes it up just to fuck with his audience. He'll change a songs time on the spur of the moment just to screw with his own band sometimes. Now don't get me wrong, he has many good live performances - but man is it a very, very mixed bag. I feel you would be better served - and many of your music and Dylan fans would enjoy hearing and watching your reactions to his original recordings. Then you could dig through his live material. Just a suggestion- as I'll keep watching you wonderful channel regardless. Much Love to you and your family.
