The fact that Himmel got so many statues of himself so he will forever accompany frieren in her journey is probably the biggest expression of LOVE I've seen in anime. This series is so good because it constantly evoke feelings. Variety of feelings at that, not just sadness and anguish.
@Arashi257 the sad thing is the only reason it was an unrequited love was because she just didn't understand. Once she learned the meaning of the rings, she realized. Had she known sooner, they may have been together.
"Everything reminds me of HIM(mel)." The series. Seriously, the best character in this story is the guy who died on the very first ep and every time we see him in Frieren's moments of introspection feels like a gut punch.
I’m a big fan of how Himmel’s death is the basis for how much time has passed throughout the series. Just really shows how important he was to the world and how much his death affected Frieren
Notice how the events Frieren finds noteworthy, as denoted by the time since Himmel died, start becoming less further apart. Indicating she's starting to appreciate the human lifespan and her time together with her new friend.
I'd like to point out that Frieren is also just very patient, she take her time doing stuff. Like in Episode 2, she didn't use magic to fish, she didn't hurry to decypher the tome, when they were picking pumpkins they just did a couple at the time, then spent 6 months searching for the flowers and she was willing to search for much longer if she needed to. Then with cleaning up the boats etc. they just did bit by bit until they didn't have enough time left and she just started picking up half of a ship without even dismantling it. Also, the sunrise thing was about seeing it with people you care about, not about just "seeing it".
What I love about that scene in particular is, how the show convey Frieren feelings. It's not like in any other show where they gotta make it looks beautiful just because their friends say so and the MC never looking at it make it to suddenly look beautiful. Nope, it just a normal scene without any exaggeration at all, it feels that mundane for Frieren, the scene really was nothing special. And it really sells out how Himmel getting mad at her, cause it can be the most boring thing ever, but the most important thing is they look at it together. Kinda feels sad for Himmel, he got mad not because Frieren missing out the scene, but missing the time to spent together with the party.
From what I understood of the sunrise scene, it's also a thing of like the memory of seeing the sunrise is already precious not because of just who she is seeing it with but also because if not for Fern she would not have gotten to see it in the first place, so that attributes a special quality, makes it more precisous simply because she was only able to make the memory because of her friends.
@@TheMattVis The second glace she gave the sunrise was actually brighter. It's true, our perception of things can change based on our mood. I remember the first time I truly felt in love. Everything did look brighter and more beautiful, even the same street I was walking through day after day.
Isn't Frieren patient because of how she perceives time? As a person with that long of a lifespan, why rush anything when you got more time than most in the world. I assumed this is why she starts to do things more efficiently in that episode with Flamme's notes as she's now being accompanied by someone who isn't graced with as much time as her (Fern).
I think it might be noteworthy that Frieren already knew where she would likely find the flowers. However, to us, she took a very large amount of time doing so. I think it's something like going to a supermarket and knowing exactly where the item you are looking for is - you would find it in seconds. Instead you might wander around the store for a couple of minutes first to look around. To you, a couple minutes might not make a difference, but it might actually be ten or a hundred times longer than if you just rushed it. To Freiren, a couple days and a couple months(or even years) might not be particularly different. So, she's paying more and more attention to the timescales of humans/her companions now.
I really like the fact that they still made the demon guy threatening in a way. He basically invented flintlock pistols, gets sealed, then 80 years later Frieren shows up with an anti-tank rifle and a bullet proof vest, and he's still able to almost immediately figure it out. That was a good way to show how much stronger Frieren had become while still maintaining a sizeable amount of menace from the former mini-boss.

Also I think Himmel was in his eighties when he died, and Heiter was probably in his hundreds when he died. Since I kinda assume they began their journey when they were twenty-ish, and at the start of the story they were in their early thirties, after ten years. Edit: Maybe Sheera should be a novelist!
Yeah, they were in their early 20s when they started their journey. In the current arc of the manga it was mentioned that Himmel was 23 when they started their journey to the demon king's castle. Himmel and Heiter are childhood friends and grew up together so we can assume that their age are close to each other. (Edit) I checked the chapter and I was wrong. Himmel was 16 when they started their journey. It mentioned his age at that time (23) and that it was 7 years after they embarked on their journey.

They're thinking, "its okay, I've got three years with them" but they don't, they have 36 calls. Once you realize that, you recognize you need to change that number. I think Frieren had a mindset similar to that and it took her old friends dying for her to realize, she didn't want to be doing "one call a month" anymore.
29:38 What you guys thought was a grave stone was actually a shrine build by the side of the road. Since that is a farming village the farmers left the straw hat on the shrine. The boy is not the only one with the straw hat, he explained that every farmer has one to protect them from the sun.

The way I understand it is that to Frieren their journey was like traveling with someone for a week. It was only after she experienced Himmel's death she started to realize, how much them and their journey mattered to her and affected her and started regret she never put in the effort to learn more about them. As she said, before she saw relationship with humans as a waste of time, because she was only focusing on the *length* compare to her lifespan, not the quality of it. That's why she was perfectly fine saying "see you in 50 years", because to her that was the depth of their relationship, but after that you can see her approach slowly changing. You can say she went to see Heiter 20 years later, which sounds like it's still way too long and he could have passed away in that time, but to Frieren it was huge jump from 50+ to just 20. It's like going from seeing someone once a month to once a week. As someone who can potentially live for like 10 000 years, experiencing something for a day or a week or a month or even a year, is just not something she considered worth caring about or that special, but her journey with Fren is already starting teaching her, that it's all about those small moments, no matter how short.
Himmel getting to go on one last adventure with his friends right at the end is something I overlooked when I read the manga. It was only a short jouney and he wasn't in any state to fight, but they went for a walk, fought a big monster and saw the meteor-shower. It sounds nice, reliving the highlight of your life right at the end.
This anime reminds me of how the pacing of Grimgar was. It had great storytelling and a lot of character development to make you appreciate not only the story but their daily lives and back stories that make you feel invested. This is definitely going to be an unforgettable journey ❤
Man, this show just hit for me. If I had to describe it in one word, it would be "quiet" (in the best way possible). I've cried so, so much already, especially from the first two episodes, although I've at least teared up in every episode. I'm incredibly excited for the episodes to come.
"serene" or "tranquil", but more so the former, would probably be the best way to describe this show in one word and yeah, agree, this got me way more emotional than I thought it would

since all of the hero party names are german words im gonna translate them all, just because i can: frieren - freezing himmel - sky/heaven heiter - joyous eisen - iron fern - far, or specifically something thats far away qual - agony/torture flamme - flame ende - end

I love that nothing is skipped over in this show, from mentioning the sour grape spell to the flower field. Everything is intentional and it makes the show so much better
I can't pin it down exactly - but something about the worldbuilding being so deep - and 'not explaining' some of the magic, just letting it happen while trusting the viewer can figure it out (which MT also does) - makes the show so much more enjoyable Also the investment in animating their characters mannerisms and human-like behavior - instead of putting that budget mostly into fights & the rest being still shots with only mouths moving and minor facial expressions - really pulls you into the story.
These first 4 episodes were beautifully executed and got me way more emotional than I initially expected before watching (even knowing this was gonna be an emotional show), this is a high contender for anime of the year for me already. I think one of the most relatable thing about Frieren as a character - apart from not being a morning person, lol - is perfectly portrayed in the scene in episode 4 with her and Fern watching the sunset: there are quite a few times when I am not into specific things as much as my friends when we are out together, but even just seeing them smile and enjoying it is enough to fully satisfy and let me have a great time, too
Fun fact: the one in charge of the soundtrack for this anime is Evan Call. He's an American composer who has worked in other animes such as Muv-Luv Alternative, Violet Evergarden, Josee, the Tiger and the Fish, and My Happy Marriage. To name a few
Heiter and Himmel were friends from the same village, they would be around the same age. Assuming Himmel was in his 20s when he began his quest, completed it ten years later in his 30s, then fifty years passed to his 80s, where he saw the meteor shower then died. Heiter lived for an additional 20+ years after Himmel's death. He would have been in his 100s. Some people can drink for most of their lives and not be affected. Good genes i guess. Eisen is a dwarf, and they live 200-400 years.
@@pickthestickup Makes sense, except that I'd never assume an anime protagonist starts his adventure at 20. The age to start adventuring in anime is, like, 14, MAYBE 17
I just realized Himel never got married. He really loves Frieren but because Frieren’s whole race is genetically dense when it comes to romance and stuff she never realized her feelings for Himmel
I was not prepared to weep every single fucking episode of this show. This show is physically painful to watch, in the best fucking ways. I’m 40 now, and I’m glad this is when I’m seeing it. I never could’ve properly appreciated this show in my twenties.
I’d like to point out to those who don’t know that elves aren’t like other beings to live for a couple hundred and then pass on. They’re immortal, so some may process death and loss differently. In Frieren’s case, her way of processing time is much different than anyone else besides Aizen (Dwarf)
I relate this heavily with the Drizzt Ur'den story when after so much time and friends start passing the dude is basically not even 30 in elf years. I always imagined fantasy elf friendships like outgrowing friends of certain times in your life not exactly the same thing but only thing I can think of to relate.
I really feel like what makes a good anime/manga is what the creators want out of it, do they want money? Do they want to impress? Or do they want to tell a story that teaches you something? I feel like the point of this story is to teach even us to not take our time for granted, our lives may be short compared to that of Frieren who lives for thousands of years but to something like a dog, we are Frieren, we live what would be multiple lifetimes for them yet we take small amounts of time for granted. A quote in this anime that hit me hard af was "It's funny, isn't it? That one one-hundredth changed you" because it made me realise how many small experiences have completely changed who I am, a 2 week vacation for example can change who you are for the rest of your life and I feel like that's something we don't pay enough attention too.
A little bit of trivia on the names in this anime, cuz they’re all german: Frieren = to freeze Fern = faraway Stark = strong Heiter = bright / cheerful (can also be used for sunny, or drunk xD) Himmel = sky / heaven Eisen = iron Ewig = eternal Flamme = flame Qual = torment / torture / agony A lot of the names of places have German names too but I didn’t catch them all except for „Größe Forest“ and „Voll Basin“ and „Ende“, Größe = size and Voll = full , the last one is self explanatory xD
The funniest part of Roshi being wrong about the 50 years is it makes no senses to come back in 50 years since they wouldn’t see it in 50 years, they’d have to wait 5 more years
She said "mere ten years" the first time with her dissociation-disorder. This time she said it with a smile. It's pretty much bookending the first 4 episodes with this contrast.
There are 4 episodes? I thought there was 1, gonna watch them now! Such an emotional rollercoaster for episode 1 though. It reminds me of To Your Eternity. I ALREADY know I'm gonna cry a lot, and understand beauty of it.

I was hooked since the first episode and this all is so amazing already so far. I love to your eternity and in a way this is similar to it but it’s still entirely it’s own thing. Loving it so far and can’t wait to experience these episodes with y’all
What gets me is how damn old Heiter had to be. We already know 10 year journey, 50 years for the meteor shower and another 20 years after Himmels death.....thats 80 years. How young was this dude during the journey, because Himmel called Heiter old man....he has to be well over 100 at time of death
YES, and its obvious thats himmel loved frieren. no one told us a story about living rly long. Tales of Phantasia is very close to frieren if its about how they drawn it
The passage of time and the perception of it is a main theme of the story. I'm only halfway through the manga atm, but nearly every chapter will start with the moment in time that first shook Frieren. That's why most chapters will start with "X years after Himmel The Hero's death". Up until Fern is introduced, it was easy to cover a decade in a single page.
I guess I've seen enough tear jerker shows to get resistance from emotional scenes. I felt sad at max but not one tear. Still its one of the best stories in this season. It feels like violet evergarden just relax and chill show with some depression and some funny moments. Even the op has a chill vibe to it
This video is funny when you're not paying attention. Roshi: Is he digging her down? Like 10 20 seconds later... Roshi: She's burying the seed and blooming the flowers. Well that's a new way to talk about it.

Another Grimgar watcher. Hello there!
For me it is the attention to the artwork and animation that reminded me of Grimgar.
@@zam023 Exactly! There was that too. The wide angle scenery shots, the focus on the characters and that music score is very much similar to grimgar.
It’s a shame we only got one season tho
Man, this show just hit for me. If I had to describe it in one word, it would be "quiet" (in the best way possible). I've cried so, so much already, especially from the first two episodes, although I've at least teared up in every episode. I'm incredibly excited for the episodes to come.
"serene" or "tranquil", but more so the former, would probably be the best way to describe this show in one word
and yeah, agree, this got me way more emotional than I thought it would
wtf this is boring as hell. question: have you seen to your eternity?
@Griffith455 dude do u just not like letting people enjoy themselves, not everyone is gonna like every show. chill bruh let people enjoy themselves. your in like every comment reply hating on this.
@Griffith455nigga you really spamming every comment appreciating the show has me rolling lmao. Get a life you prude 😂
It’s good actually better than good imo but still didn’t cry, maybe I’m just a cold person?
since all of the hero party names are german words im gonna translate them all, just because i can:
frieren - freezing
himmel - sky/heaven
heiter - joyous
eisen - iron
fern - far, or specifically something thats far away
qual - agony/torture
flamme - flame
ende - end
And stark us strong, right?
@@lylatfox4 yes stark is strong, and for the demons in the latest two episode spoiler:
linie - line, as a straight line
draht - wire
lügner - liar (i still curse the guys who made the anime for that one, because as soon as i heard the name i knew what was comming, where i presume i wouldve had atleast slight doubts for a bit without knowing the name)
I love that nothing is skipped over in this show, from mentioning the sour grape spell to the flower field. Everything is intentional and it makes the show so much better
This series has such an amazing representation of how someone near immortal would think and act.
Yeah
I just realized the quote about the land of souls that they find in her masters magic notes IS IN THE FIRST EPISODE. Literally like first scene!!
This anime's characters has the softest soothing voices. Love it!
fr tho, rip flamme's voice actor, her voice was very calming kinda like a grandma's
If Frieren would date a human it would go like this "I am going to go buy some milk, be right back" and then she comes back 20 years later
The perfect mushoku tensei replacement, wish all anime was this good
For real. Was sad MT was over for now but this came right on time.
I can't pin it down exactly - but something about the worldbuilding being so deep - and 'not explaining' some of the magic, just letting it happen while trusting the viewer can figure it out (which MT also does) - makes the show so much more enjoyable
Also the investment in animating their characters mannerisms and human-like behavior - instead of putting that budget mostly into fights & the rest being still shots with only mouths moving and minor facial expressions - really pulls you into the story.
You can see the light going out in Sheera's eyes when she heard the word "elfussy"
These first 4 episodes were beautifully executed and got me way more emotional than I initially expected before watching (even knowing this was gonna be an emotional show), this is a high contender for anime of the year for me already.
I think one of the most relatable thing about Frieren as a character - apart from not being a morning person, lol - is perfectly portrayed in the scene in episode 4 with her and Fern watching the sunset: there are quite a few times when I am not into specific things as much as my friends when we are out together, but even just seeing them smile and enjoying it is enough to fully satisfy and let me have a great time, too
This is not a sad show like to your eternity, it's just melancholic rather than depressing lol
Fun fact: the one in charge of the soundtrack for this anime is Evan Call. He's an American composer who has worked in other animes such as Muv-Luv Alternative, Violet Evergarden, Josee, the Tiger and the Fish, and My Happy Marriage. To name a few
Imagine a human adopting a baby elf, and dying before it even learns its first words.
A story, a journey doesn’t end when the adventure ends. It just continues onward!
Indeed
"Fuck ya'll"
"Fuck you actually"
hahaha I love this.
Frieren getting caught in the trap mimic chest is the cure I need for depression🥲
The 50 vs 15 years comment had me:
It's 50.
It's 50!
IT'S 50!!!
I need 24hrs more on my day, this season is packed with gems
Madhouse is truly going all out on this one, as it should be for this award winning manga.
He really loves Frieren but because Frieren’s whole race is genetically dense when it comes to romance and stuff she never realized her feelings for Himmel
bro died a virgin just to be loyal to one woman who doesn't experience emotions like a human, that's a king right there
"Sheera just get up off the couch" kills me
Now I really want a game where you have to seal/trap a boss early and then becomes an optional boss that you can unseal post game. Would be epic
Roshi thought he could use his gas gas fruit against Lupa but didn't know his haki had improved 😂
We making it out the Abyss with this, ya'll!
When you leave to work for the day and your hamster is home alone, think about how Himmel felt when Frieren left for 50 years.
Bro wanted her
They also got Evan Call as the musical composer for this show. He’s the same person who did the music for Violet Evergarden
This show is gonna tug on heartstrings unlike any other
no
Nah, all the sad "all my friends are dead" shit is done. The adventure starts now.
I was not prepared to weep every single fucking episode of this show. This show is physically painful to watch, in the best fucking ways. I’m 40 now, and I’m glad this is when I’m seeing it. I never could’ve properly appreciated this show in my twenties.
This anime is moving art.
“Sheera, people die every day. But Magic? Magic is forever.” This man Roshi was spitting 😂
Roshi had a "Steel is heavier than feathers moment"
Dude the JJJAAHBLESSS REEEEEINCURRRRRNATTTIOON in the background at 2:20 made me laugh
Roshi getting clapped/his slow realization w the 15 v 50 years is so funny
This show feels so awesome. Love the world building.
Same here. Can't wait for more
Fun Fact the singer of the Oshi No Ko intro sang this intro too!!
I’d like to point out to those who don’t know that elves aren’t like other beings to live for a couple hundred and then pass on. They’re immortal, so some may process death and loss differently. In Frieren’s case, her way of processing time is much different than anyone else besides Aizen (Dwarf)
17:46 it's not the seeds, but a related species. She's saying let's just settle and plant these instead lol
I relate this heavily with the Drizzt Ur'den story when after so much time and friends start passing the dude is basically not even 30 in elf years. I always imagined fantasy elf friendships like outgrowing friends of certain times in your life not exactly the same thing but only thing I can think of to relate.
This show is just absolutely amazing and is a good way to remind us that we should enjoy things with the little time we have on this planet.
I’m glad they finally reacted to this masterpiece
I wouldn't even be surprised if Sheera was actually one of writers of all the shows we watched...
A little bit of trivia on the names in this anime, cuz they’re all german:
Frieren = to freeze
Fern = faraway
Stark = strong
Heiter = bright / cheerful (can also be used for sunny, or drunk xD)
Himmel = sky / heaven
Eisen = iron
Ewig = eternal
Flamme = flame
Qual = torment / torture / agony
A lot of the names of places have German names too but I didn’t catch them all except for „Größe Forest“ and „Voll Basin“ and „Ende“, Größe = size and Voll = full , the last one is self explanatory xD
The funniest part of Roshi being wrong about the 50 years is it makes no senses to come back in 50 years since they wouldn’t see it in 50 years, they’d have to wait 5 more years
"Getting old: the anime" 😂😂😂 apt
Edit: Tarzan probably does get splinters between his toes 😂😂😭
I’m so happy they picked this one up, I don’t see that many people watching it
Saw episode 1 and then immediately started on the manga until I caught up. Lovely series
Caught up to chapter 114 already ?
@@yogahadhi well it was 113 until just recently so I'll get on that right now lol
@@komos3719I read it 2 years ago in class. Damn, I was doing my best to hold my tears in lmao.
I just watched the first four episodes myself. It got me to cry three times in two episodes.
Ah the story of a girl realising her mere 10 year adventure was the most impactful 10 years in her long life
Sheera's "Hadi" has to be the funniest fucking reference i've seen in a reaction. holy fuck lmao
Reminds me of Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms movie, which both has similar situation with life span and can make Lupa sweat from his eyes.
Let’s GOOOOOOOOOO Lupa is here I was worried this wouldn’t be his type of anime, glad his here for the wonderful ride
I ALREADY know I'm gonna cry a lot, and understand beauty of it.
this shows off to a beautiful start. i remember when I was looking for a good magical manga a year or so back I read witch hat atelier instead of this and now I'm kinda glad bc now I get to see it for the first time in a beautiful madhouse adaptation. this gives mad mushoku tensei, to your eternity, and maquia vibes and thats a really good thing.
I was hooked since the first episode and this all is so amazing already so far. I love to your eternity and in a way this is similar to it but it’s still entirely it’s own thing. Loving it so far and can’t wait to experience these episodes with y’all
Just cracked in and the clappening already happened. Roshi, whyyyyyyyy 😂 👏👏👏
What gets me is how damn old Heiter had to be. We already know 10 year journey, 50 years for the meteor shower and another 20 years after Himmels death.....thats 80 years. How young was this dude during the journey, because Himmel called Heiter old man....he has to be well over 100 at time of death
And he was an ALCOHOLIC. Man is built different if he lived up to a hundred years.
the power of christ
Y'all should do more multiple episode reactions more often
They only did that cause 4 episodes came out, they usually do when mutiple episodes come out of any anime.
I almost spit out my biscuit when sheera said Hadi. Lol😂
YES, and its obvious thats himmel loved frieren. no one told us a story about living rly long. Tales of Phantasia is very close to frieren if its about how they drawn it
Somehow Roshi can't do the simple subtraction of the years since Himmel's death, i guess that's why he think 50 is 15 🤣
The passage of time and the perception of it is a main theme of the story.
Even the op has a chill vibe to it
28:36 😂🤣😂🤣 I was also thinking about Shanks when she talked about the hat!
Studio Madhouse is back stronger than ever before🔥
This video is funny when you're not paying attention.
Roshi: Is he digging her down?
Like 10 20 seconds later...
Roshi: She's burying the seed and blooming the flowers.
Well that's a new way to talk about it.
"Everything reminds me of HIM" has to be top 10 edits ever on this channel by Alejandro(I hope I spelled that right)
I would love the intro for Lupa and Sheera to be FRIEREN YEAGERRRR 😂😂
Roshi would not let go of that “15 years” 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
i was wondering where was the clown emoji on roshi face cuz what he was saying about only 15 years passing was funny af and yall actually did it xD
We got the 4 ep combo! Bless up 🙏
Yes.
