Imagine being so much of a Gigachad, a monster couldn't even make an illusion of you that would lure its victim. The monster was too good and accurate with its illusions.
I have my head canon/theory that the reason Frieren used too much power against the illusion demon is because she was pissed that the demon dared to use Himmel’s memory against her
I think she used the big spell because the illusion demons use darkness to hide their true bodies (which is seen with the fact after Frieren used the spell to get rid of the trees Fren was able to see its true form), so she cleared out all the trees on the path so that more demons couldn't go there, and now the path is safe for the villagers.
As an anime only so I don't know if true, but something that I think you guys aren't picking up about her hobby of collecting spells is that she says she does it because someone once praised her for them, but also, as we've seen, the ones she's shown seem to have connections to her friends, like the blue flower one, the sour grapes one, things like that. I think someone (maybe Himmel) once talked about seeing through clothes, she might not even have understood the reason, but the memory makes the spell worth her time.
They did notice the grape souring spell being related to her friends preferred tastes in the first episode, but I don't think they gave that the emotional weight it deserved and thought it was more of a side trait, when it is really Frieren's main thing (aside from demon killing and Himmel flashbacks).
Btw (in case anyone hasn’t mentioned already), all the characters’ names have meanings in German. Frieren is from the verb “to freeze”, Himmel is “Heaven”, Heiter is “bright”, Eisen is “iron”, Fern is “remote/distant”, Stark is “strong”, and so on. Incidentally, Einsam (the monsters they face that make illusions) means “lonely” or “alone”

This episode made me emotional and laugh, "Frieren" is such a wholesome anime, I really love it ❤ Frieren is funny in this episode 😁, the more I get to know her, the more I like her ❤
I love the detail in this episode at 4:46 it shows how fern doesn't need to be helped across anymore and is call back to her a few episodes ago when Frieren had to hold her hand to cross a stream. Frieren is a good mom despite her personality difficulty and not knowing how to emote "properly" and she instantly accepts that fern is grown and didnt need the bit of help despite being a little surprised. I also like that is was a learned and set habit to help her apprentice even with little things. I take her saying "ill put on a brave face too" after the Priests death and accepting to 10 year quest was layered with her agreeing to play her role thoroughly and to the best of her ability even if relation is not her strong suit. I fell in love with this show and the author must be someone special to make such a beautifully tragic person come to life in such a poetic way. Was moved to tears in the first 4 episodes and im sure there will be more.
A common misconception is that people died a lot younger in that age due to the short average lifespan on that period, but that average is low due to the high infant mortality rate, due obvious low availability of good medical care. Once you pass that stage, people could live as long as we do.
Dragon has high resistance against magic attack. Mage ia not match to fight them on their own. Without a vanguard, hit and run is the best strategy. The class in this world actually matter and not side line just because she is powerful like many other fantasy anime.

When mages can alter the fabric of reality, warriors must be incredibly powerful in order to keep up.

It's a mild spoiler but essentially because they live thousands of years they kinda just wander the world back and forth doing their own stuff. They don't really have the desire or need to reproduce. You'll live another 2000 years to complete all the things you want so no need to make a next generation to leave it to. Basically they're slowly going extinct because no one wants to make new elves, a lot died during the Demon King wars and the ones who are still alive have other things they value higher than raising a child.
We’ll likely find out, but maybe presume not all of them take the same approach to life that Frieren does (of wandering wherever because they can “probably” handle it)
