    By the way, the largest possible shadow is shaped like a regular hexagon but the shadow in my animation is kind of irregular. My bad.
    UPDATE:
    some people are not so sure if this would be possible in real world, because there are some parts of the cube clipping through another one. However that is just an error I made while animating the movements of the cube, in reality there is enough space to even fit a slightly larger cube through. You can see the math and history behind it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Rupert%27s_cube
    Hope this clears things up

      Probably the problem with how both he and this video pose the question. Asking it in a certain way can immediately imply a lot of restrictions. For example, the first hole cut in this video implied the cut can only be made in to one face and out the opposite face, not though all 6 faces as the final solution showed.

      Roman Neill Basically, cut out a shape with a very large perimeter (e.g. a very spiky star with lots of points), then cut out the interior of that shape, leaving just a thin outline. Then you can stretch that outline apart as far as the perimeter will allow you, and step through it.

    I guess that makes sense... but wouldn’t parts of the white cube essentially need to be infinitely thin to allow this? That means to have this in the real world you would ether need to make the white cube an undetectable amount larger than the other cube, or have it bulge at those points, otherwise the cube would be cut apart before the other cube would be able to fit through it...

    • @karrotsrkool
      @karrotsrkool 6 лет назад +17

      Indeed, and if we are allowing infinitely thin sections of the outer cube then you can just cut straight through the centre as is shown at the beginning. If you actually do the maths it's not even going through the cube as it occupies the same space so the whole video is really a lie.

    • @plutoniumfish8368
      @plutoniumfish8368 6 лет назад +71

      No, there is actually a bit of wiggle room that's kind of hard to see. You could actually cut a hole to fit a cube that is 6% larger and it will still remain one piece.

  • @Professor_Utonium_
    @Professor_Utonium_ 6 лет назад

    This wouldn't work because if all sides of both cubes are equal, you would just end up with what are essentially the "leftovers" of cutting out enough space for the other cube to fit through. Being the exact same size, there would be nothing left connecting the additional pieces left by making the hole. In addition, a shadow changes the area it covers depending on where the light it positioned.

    this is the reason why drain covers arent square but circular. I know square and cube isnt same but by rotating a square drain cover a certain way, it will fall through the square hole.

    • @yiumyoumsan6997
      @yiumyoumsan6997 5 лет назад

      I'm pretty sure the reason why drain cover is circular is because the radius is the same even though you measure it from any where. It'll fit the hole no matter from what direction you close it.
      Meanwhile if the drain cover is square it will become "less efficient" because you have to close it in certain direction in order to fit it in the hole.
      P.S. i'm sorry if my explanation is too complicated because english isn't my first language.
