    Thor, you always underestimated the Mayor's love for Faith. It made complete sense for me that he'd forget all hiscalculations when confronted with the woman that hurt his little girl, gloating on his face.
    And the acting next episode is, IIRC, off the charts.

    The best explanation I’ve ever come up with for why Faith was helping Buffy in her dreams at the end of Season 3 and why Buffy was murdering Faith in her dreams in this episode was that the two slayers exist in each others minds in the form that reflects the host. So Buffy is in general a selfless and positive person, so when Buffy was dreaming and connecting with Faith, she got the parts of Faith that were the most positive attributes Faith possessed. When Faith dreamed of Buffy, Faith is filled with trauma and violence and rage and so the Buffy in her mind is just the parts of Buffy that are violent and brutal (attributes she needs to fight demons). They are mirrors reflecting the best and worst of the ppl and the world around them.

    My take on that old Faith Buffy dream, is that it was a Slayer Dream realm. In that area, it was more Faith's pure Slayer self, without any of the corruption. So that part helped Buffy. While the human real Faith with darkness and human emotions still holds a grudge when she wakes from the coma.

    • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron Год назад +4

      @@B-Dad A reason I think it couldn't have just been Buffy is that when Faith said "Just take what you need" it was Faith giving over some of her share of the slayer power to Buffy, which allowed Buffy to immediately come too, and be completely at full strength immediately, while Faith remained in a coma for a lot longer.

    • @thecakemake.
      @thecakemake. Год назад

      Yeah I've always seen it as the slayer dreams are part of the slayer power and Buffy a faith share that power and therefore they are connected in a kind of slayer collective consciousness that has prophetic sense.

    Faith wasn't in the Initiative, she was in the jail ward of the hospital. Given the British guys showing up in Giles' apartment, I think we can assume the nurse who made the mysterious phone call was with the Watcher's Council (I really like the realization that even in a coma, Faith is still a Slayer, and has a Watcher: it raises the question, could they have a covert Watcher keeping tabs on Buffy despite her "mutiny" last season?)
    On the dreams, I think Faith being helpful was a dream of Buffy's, while Buffy-as-Terminator was a dream of Faith's. Which is greatly revealing of how they see each other.

    One of the things I love about Buffy/Angel is the little bits of dialogue that seem kind of ordinary on a first watch, but are actually little bits of foreshadowing that you don't notice until a rewatch: Case in point from this episode, Buffy/Faith's exchange at the college: "If I were her I'd get out of dodge post hasty" "You're not me"

    People tend to forget that the Mayor is also human. No matter how big and bad anyone is they have weaknesses. Like Troy who was undefeated, he was taken down by something no one would have thought of. The mayor's Achilles Heel was Faith. I think it was genius that he was destroyed by something that was insignificant to everyone but fatal for him.

    Dreams are a part of the supernatural powers of a Slayer. Some slayer dreams can foretell the future, like at the very beginning of the show when Buffy was dreaming about the Master and the Harvest. Some slayer dreams show the present, like when Buffy and Angel were sharing the dream where the First Evil was torturing Angel with dreams of his evil past deeds. However, in this case think the true slayer parts of Buffy and Faith were connecting in a dream space where they can talk to each other, and maybe they can access the future or the present during their time in that place, but I don't think the emnity exists in the dream space because it's a place for more important things. Since it appears that Buffy's temporary death caused the first instance of having 2 slayers alive at one time, this is uncharted territory.

    Being an adult now rewatching Buffy I can feel more empathy for Faiths character. She has a rough childhood and upbringing. She was the outcast. She never had close friends, family and watched her watcher die. She didn’t have the love, support or respect that Buffy got. Even before she turned into a villain she lived alone in a dingy motel room and nobody offered to help her. She went down the wrong path and was manipulated by the only person who was a parental role model to her. She’s like a lost child who is craving love and attention and she did everything she could to make the mayor feel proud of her.
    I’m not excusing her actions but looking at it from this point of view makes Faiths character seem more tragic 😢

      Faith had a lot to overcome.

    I love when you make an unfounded assumption/guess (Faith held by the Initiative?!? Faith was in the hospital months before we found out the Initiative even existed) and then double down on that theory in spite of conflicting information, like if she was held by them, how does she just walk out of a "hospital" (not the secret base) and end up on the street in downtown Sunnydale (not a college campus)... :)
    Is this some other secret organization?!? Well, it MIGHT be the Watcher's Council, given they are an organization that actually KNOWS about Slayers, Faith in particular, and has a vested interest in keeping tabs on her condition...

    Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘This Year’s Girl’. May contain spoilers.
    Here Willow shares details with Tara about the plan for the day in capturing Faith, presumably ready to introduce her to the Scooby Gang, or at least Buffy. Up until now Willow hasn’t mentioned that there is violence involved in what the Gang do together other than Buffy’s slaying. Tara confesses she can’t fight. Willow assures her that their job would be just locating Faith and then telling Buffy where she is. They wouldn’t have to do any fighting as it’s just reconnaissance. And if Faith did notice them, they can just run and hide.
    These new revealed details about what the Scooby Gang does on an average day out patrolling with the Slayer makes Tara view Willow in a whole new light:
    “She’s a girl who likes to get into the action. I’ve got a really cool girlfriend.”

    Hi Thor, I've been going through your Buffy (and Angel reactions).
    On Faith--okay, I certainly don't want her or anyone to ever hurt Joyce, but I just have to appreciate how much Faith just straight up sounds like a spurned lover as she's ranting to her about Buffy "moving on." It's well known at this point that Eliza always intentionally played Faith as attracted to/crushing on Buffy, and while that might not have been Whedon's intention, Douglas Petrie (the writer of this episode as well as several other key Faith episodes) recognized that, liked it, and leaned into the subtext as much as he could.
    It doesn't make anything Faith does better/more excusable--if anything it's worse--but it's SO much more interesting than Faith just being this new slayer showing up and being resentful and jealous of the protagonist in the usual way that girls are assumed to be jealous of each other. Like yes, some of that is definitely there, feelings of inadequacy because she went from nothing to being the chosen one yet she's sharing the spotlight with someone who appears to do it better, but even more than that she wants to be as important to Buffy as Angel--or even Riley--is, and so much of her self-victimization (there's a strong implication that a lot of bad things we don't even know about probably happened to Faith before we met her but she's certainly not Buffy's victim beyond getting stabbed which only happened because she pushed and pushed and pushed her into a corner) and trying to cast Buffy as another villain in her story is her inability to deal with feelings that make her vulnerable.

    I think it’s important to try and see the perspective of people who question whether or not Buffy is the hero, may even be the villain. If you can at least try and understand this perspective, you can handle more of the storylines later in seasons, particularly s6 and s7. We get to see all sides of Buffy as the audience but many people, including her closest friends, see someone who hides her insecurities and leads with her confidence she’s riteous. If you knew someone like her, you may question sometimes that she’s always right.

      @@paulinerobertson6836 The reason you're seeing responses like that is because shows like Buffy encourage the audience to go deeper than "villain is bad because villain is bad" and invite us to explore what makes people do what they do, to empathise with their experiences, and find the humanity beneath the villainy. Good fiction gets us to consider perspectives we likely wouldn't in everyday life, and allows us to find kinship with characters that we might otherwise think we have nothing in common with.
