    That is probably the best explanation on Newman Projections ever. I understood the subject in less than 15 minutes otherwise I'd probably spent at least 2-3 hrs to understand whats going on. Big thanks as always Prof. Dave!

    Your channel is just fantastic! Thank you for everything you offer to us! I have a question regarding the Newman projections. I have read that the front carbon is represented through a central dot and that the circle is representing the back carbon. Is this simply another way to interpret, to imagine, to depict the Newman projection or is one of the theories wrong?

    The prescribed textbook of my second year organic chemistry explains that the front carbon you look at directly is the front 3 lines connected in the middle, and the back circle is the farther carbon; even your ball and stick model corresponds to the drawing on the board, but in your explanation you said the front carbon is the circle :/

    • @ProfessorDaveExplains
      @ProfessorDaveExplains  5 лет назад

      Well it's all a matter of interpretation since the diagrams aren't real, but to me it makes no sense to call the circle the back carbon because the bonds project from the edges, as though they connect at a point that is hidden behind it.

  • @MzwandileHarmans
    @MzwandileHarmans 3 года назад

    Well said. Should have mentioned stability between these conformations that eclipsed arrangements due to their higher energy they are unstable compared to staggered conformations (anti conformation and gauche conformation).

    • @ProfessorDaveExplains
      @ProfessorDaveExplains  2 года назад

      I see the circle as the front carbon. It doesn’t make sense to me how one carbon would be a point and the other a circle. The circle obscures the other bonds.

  • @shrihari2469
    @shrihari2469 4 года назад +1

    Prof. Dave the front carbon isn’t represented by a circle. The back carbon is represented by the circle.
    I just read this from a book.

    • @ProfessorDaveExplains
      @ProfessorDaveExplains  4 года назад

      Sounds ridiculous to me. Why would the bonds on the back carbon initiate from the edge of the circle while the ones on the front carbon initiate at the center? And how is it that you can see the back carbon? It's moot because it is a made up convention, but it's clearly supposed to be the front carbon.
