It really depends:) I'm using a 10w diode laser, so I can cut through 0 to 10mm wood. I use 3mm or less whenever I make something that's supposed to be gentle (like my roll top pencil case, vases and such). 6mm is a lot bulkier, so it's bad for gentle things but great for rigidity.
