- One of these USB-C hubs cost three times the other. Can it possibly be worth it? Here's a look at the Anker PoweCore 8-in-1 and Hyper HyperDrive Ultimate 11 Port with advice to help you make sure you get the right one for you.
I'm looking for a dock for my iMac, but nearly all the ones I've seen are aimed at laptops only have a stubby little cable that mean the dock will be dangling in the air above my desk. The only ones with longer cables seem to be the more pricey Caldigit type ones that do quite a bit more than I need.
I have a late 2013 iMac. I want to buy a new external hard drive that only connects with UBC C. Therefore can I connect this external hard drive to one of my Thunderbolt ports? Even Apple couldn't answer me that. There has to be some way I can use USB C without having to buy a new iMac. Thank You.
Hey Matthew. Im looking for a usb hub / dock, to connect to my work laptop at home. Im planning on useing it with my 4k screen, plug in my various accessories, mouse, keyboard, etc, nothing more fancy than that. Its a lenovo thinkpad i use for work. Im looking for a solution like my lenovo docking station, to only have to connect 1 cable into my laptop and everything works after that 1 connection. At work it works fine, the docking can charge and everything is plugged and functions. Could you ontop of your head remember one you would pick for this application? im abit confused.
Thank you! Some actual advice on these convoluted devices, the only thing I’d like to see is actual speed tests using the same ssd and files to see the difference. So far now I’m looking at Anker!
I'll see what I can come up with! Thank you!
The benefit that I saw of hyper is that I can use it on my macbook air to connect 2 external monitors with just the adapter. Can the anker do this as well?
I am wondering if the Anker actully does HDMI 4K 60 HZ, some say it does and others say it does not. Also the SD slot is not UHSII but not a deal breaker... I have the M1 Mac air by the way..
Sir can u please check the ethernet lan connection for m1 macbook Air.... please......
It does work with the M1 MacBook Pro.
Already had Hyper USB-C. It's more and more expensive and has a big problem with cable. My cable was cut off and unable to replace.
Thanks for the tips. I'm searching for 2 USB ports for our 2 all-in-one PCs. I need to be able to charge my phone on mine, but the other doesn't need that capability. I'm finding all of the choices are making me afraid to select one. Sometimes, too many options is crippling.
There are a lot of options for sure and while we don’t want a bad product, we also should not have to buy more than we’ll use.
Good video. Looking for link to both hubs.
Just take both this might be a work around both connect to usb -c to your device.
I’m on the cusp of buying an M1 MacBook Pro and was looking at the Anker, because it seems to have all the functions I need. Now I’m definitely buying one, thanks for the video! I’m gonna use the laptop for music production and two USB A-s are perfectly enough to plug in my USB audio interface and keyboard
I hope it serves you as well as mine has me. If it doesn’t, don’t settle!
@@MatthewFortner Thank you! 😊
I am thinking of buying a Anker as I have a Macbook M1 Air which I also use for Music Production, I would of preferred if it had 3 x USB ports. 1x Audio Interface, 1 x keyboard/controller but it would have been nice to have a 3rd USB-A port to connect an External Hard Drive. I wonder if it is possible to connect a USB-A 9 port adapter to one of the USB-A slots?
Good over all review. The price for the Hyper Hyperdrive includes the ability to add TWO Monitors to the M-1 laptop mac one instantly, and the second after you enable it in settings.. Huge difference there is part of the price, I believe.
did you test data throughput another youtuber only got 5gbps instead of the 10 its supposed to be from the anker.
Anker hub two types : one with a cable the other only directly plug into the machine. Which one would you recommend ? I like the one without cable, it is neat but worry that if connect to too many things will be too heavy for the iPad ..
I prefer the cable so that it does not block other ports and I feel there is lees risk of damage .
@@MatthewFortner thank you!
Does the lan port work with macbook Air m1.many in Amazon reviews tell it's not working
It works perfectly for me with the M1 MacBook Pro. I connect to my home server with Wi-Fi off connected via Ethernet.
@@MatthewFortner are u sure sir because I have to import from USA to India and cannot return so....the present price is 60 dollars .can u alert when its 50 dollars... thank u sir
@@ravik3401 I connect our MacBook Pro via Ethernet to access my NAS. Works just fine so far.
What about Ives that plug into the wall for power
I liked this review. Straight. No BS.
I guess I would go with Anker, most for the price.
straight to B.S hahahaha
you mention the sd card readers on the hubs are considerably slower than dedicated sd card readers like a sandisk or an apple sd card reader. Is this a noticeable difference? Thanks
It is very noticeable when if you use high speed cards, I have a shot video comparing. ruclips.net/video/4d5uz7Hy4hg/видео.html
Anker Support 1080p 144hz?
A question:
i have a notebook, i want to conncect to a 144 hz monitor but my hdmy port is only 1.4 and does not support 144 hz. with anker it should work, but even if notebook port does not?
Hi, Cristian. I wish I knew the answer, but if I were you I’d contact Anker customer support and also read through the customer reviews and questions on Amazon.
@@MatthewFortner ok thanks, amazing!
Neither device is a hub and both are considered docks. First glaring mistake. After almost 3 mins, no mention of how fast you can pump data into either device, are they 3.0, 3.1 or 3.2 or God forbid USB 4 i.e. Thunderbolt 4?
Hi, Wayne. I appreciate you taking the time to comment. While I’m not arguing over what the technically correct term is, they are called hubs by the manufacturers, retailers and consumers. They typically reserve the term dock for devices that require an external power supply to operate at any capacity, meaning there is no functionality without an external power source like with my StarTech Thunderbolt dock. These smaller devices, or hubs as they’ve been dubbed, can largely function off the power supplied from the computer or tablet - not requiring a power adapter at all times.
I start with USB-A data transfer speeds at about 2m20s.
I mention the USB-C data specs at 2m45s.
I hope this helps and thank you.
Hi
I have questions for you
I have brought anker usb c hub 555 8 in 1 . I brought it from Canada Vancouver via Amazon . But I'm in india is it will be work in India specially its PD port type c. In mac it's showing notification on battery ( battery not charging)
But charging sign is showing on battery. Can you please help me on this.
Actually canada voltage is different from India
I’m not sure I know enough to be good help. Anker support would be a better option. It could be that your peripherals and laptop are requiring more power than required to charge. Whatever you have plugged into the hub saps power from what is available to charge the laptop battery. You have more than one port on your Mac, so you’d be better off charging directly regardless.
Do you need to power through the Hub? IS this how it gets it power or can I still power through the available USBC on the lap top?
One of my cats has gotten bone cancer from toxic WiFi & EMF radiation, I'd cast youtube cat games to the TV, he played then fell asleep in front of the TV. I notice his shoulder became larger than a golf ball within a weeks time, took to vet and diagnosed with bone cancer. So now I am going get an Anker hub so I can use the HDMI to connect to the TV, use LAN cable from the modem to my laptop, and turn off WiFi. Also keep cell phone on airplane mode as much as possible. Unfortunately I will have to not let my cats watch youtube cat games anymore, they were so addicted to them. Do you have any suggestions to further block WiFi, bluetooth, EMF waves in the home?
I wish I knew more to help. I’m sorry about your cat. I have two that are dear to me.
Bro... You're fucking crazy lmao.
Matthew, Grover McNeil, good to see you thanks for the video.
Grover! Awesome to hear from you. I miss you Triangle folks.
Which shld I get ..so that it can power up my 2tb wd mechanical disk and some times 512 gb t7
Plz do suggest ... I am going nuts .. see the number of hubs in markets and specs on it .. jezz
Connecting a WD My Passport 4TB drive and an SSD through my Anker PowerExpand 8-in-1 works just fine with my 2019 MacBookPro. It worked fine both with and without power connected. www.anker.com/products/variant/powerexpand-8in1-usbc-pd-10gbps-data-hub/A83830A1
@@MatthewFortner does it power up when connected to ipad pro ?
Hi @Matthew Fortner, my new laptop needs 95W input as minimum power and (apart from some 400€, workstation hubs) there really aren't any options with this high of an output. I will need to plug in the original charger directly. Can I use a hub like this without any extra external power? If not, I would need tow power bricks and one hub, just to expand the small port setup it has. This sounds ridiculous to me ...
If you are using your laptop power supply in one port and this in another port, then you do not need an additional power supply.
Does anybody know if anker hdmi port can output 2k 120hz?
How can I test my type c after marker dongle watts consumption you have in your devices ? Just plugged it uses that much or after charging the dongles uses those 15w u mention ?
I don’t know how to test that, but most manufacturers reference the consumption when citing the max watts and the charging capability. Those little things get hot so there’s considerable energy running through them.
@@MatthewFortner really they get hot heheh I’m new to this type of dongles my first iPad Pro hopefully everything goes well I heard some iPad pros bend w ease well ima try to keep it secure and avoid taking it too often outdoors
Bought an Anker power bank thinking it powered USB-C devices, turns out it was USB-C charge port only :-(
I have one like that. I have a USB-A to USB-C cable for when I need to charge that way. Still an inconvenience.
So I am looking a usb c hub with 3 usb ports and one to charge my phone. Could you recommend one?
Are you saying you’d like 1 USB-C and 3 USB type A ports?
@@MatthewFortner yes, 3 usb A ports and a pass thru C to charge my phone. Thanks.
I think you might have to look at more of a docking station/desktop device for that. I don’t know why, but it seems you get a choice of 3 USB-Type A 10th one USB-C for power input or two Type A with a USB-C power input and a second USB-C port for other devices. I wonder if heat is an issue that complicates that.
If I buy the Anker and I don't have a USB-C port on my laptop, should I get a USB-A to USB-C adapter or not because maybe it could screw up the Anker? If I should get that adapter, is there any you reccomend that are compatable with this Anker product and has 10Gbps? Thanks.
I don't think a USB-C hub would work well for you without native USB-C. They require more power than what USB-A supplies.
@@MatthewFortner ok thank you for getting back to me, do you know any USB-A hubs just like the anker USB-C hub I could get instead?
Hi - the type of information that you just shared is very rare and even if there are some sites discussing this, they are all very confusing. Having said that, I have a Dell XPS 9550 from 2016 where the HDMI can only support 4K 30Hz but there is a thunderbolt 3 which I believe can support 4K 60Hz. So my question is, will I be able to connect the machine to the Anker in your video and connect the other end of the USB to a USB 4K 60 Hz monitor? In essence, will the usb-c port in the hub capable receive the video output from the thunderbolt and push it out via the other usb-c to the monitor? Very confusing eh!!?!?
Thank you for the feedback. I wish this would work for you, but this hub does not support Thunderbolt 3 so you would not get video through the type-C port on the hub. There are Thunderbolt 3 hubs, but at my last look they are much pricer. I wish I had an easy and inexpensive answer than that.
The Anker hub you feature works fine until you try to charge your devices from the USB ports and need to unplug the computer and take it elsewhere for a while. Then the charging stops! I could not find the reson why this happens, the hub was still powered by the PD cable and should be passing power to all the plugged in devices. It just would not. :(
Thanks so much for these feedbacks... by the way.... the cat was the best part !!!!
Which would be good for Mac M1 ?
I still recommend the Anker PowerExpand 8-in-1 USB-C PD 10Gbps Data Hub.
Hi guys. Can i use this with a desktop PC or will it only work with a laptop?
It works with a desktop, too. Just needs to have a USB-C port.
@@MatthewFortner Cool. Thanks for the quick reply
This was a great video. Ordering the Anker and I just got my new MacBook Pro M1 on Friday....what would be the Best external hard drive SSD ? I want to use it for my photography. Do you have a comparison review for External Drive for MacBook? Thanks
I do. ruclips.net/video/TvC4IcQw2IA/видео.html
If I were in your position, I'd see if the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, version 2. will work for you.
Hi sir,
I'm planning to get the new M1 MacBook Pro, it only has 2 TB ports.
I'll be using one of the ports to be connected to my external monitor (LG 27UL850) 24/7, it charges my old MBP at 60W rate, and I will expect the same on the new Macbook.
But if I'm planning to get the Anker PowerCore 8-in-1 and attach it to the other TB port, how does it work?
Port 1: Connected to external monitor, powering the Macbook at 60W
Port 2: Connected to Anker PowerCore, requires 15W to power it, and powers the Macbook at 85W
Will it mess up my Macbook? Is the Macbook smart enough to be used with an external monitor, while powering up the adapter while charging my Macbook at a healthy watts?
Thank you.
My M1 MBP has has no issues thus far with the Anker. Apple has also released updates to address the potential issues that seemed to be caused by non-compliant hubs. The 85w power spec on the Anker refers to the maximum power the hub can parse from charger. The hub does not supply power itself. You have to plug your power adapter into the hub or computer. If you plug-in a 100w adapter, it will supply 85w max. If you plug in a 60w power adapter into the hub and connect the hub to the computer, your computer will receive about 45 W of charging since the hub uses about 15w. If you can connect to your external monitor using HDMI with the hub, then you can plug your power adapter directly into the computer if that makes you feel more secure. Keep in mind that the hub will still draw 15w of power either way. So far it’s been enough.
@@MatthewFortner Thank you for the detailed reply! Appreciate it
Anker has no audio port :(
Nice review, cheers, I have the 7 in 1 Anker for my 2017 MacBook pro and it works a dream.
How’s the performance of Anker? How do the ports perform in transfer speed etc? Any connection issues? Does the hub get too hot?
The Anker’s 10GB/s is faster than all the 5GB/s hubs I’ve tested. I don’t yet have the ultimate in SSD to fully explore the limits, but 100GB data transfers from a middling external SSD to my 2019 MacBook Pro have taken 3 minutes. The Hyper was closer to 4 minutes. Anker says temperatures can reach up to 149 degrees Fahrenheit. In my experience, they all get hot and more so during intensive use. I’ve noticed this trend in a lot of recent tech peripherals recently. That seems to be where they are pushing to eek out performance. Too hot, though? Well it works without fault and I can handle it fine during use. I don’t leave it connect though when not in use. They use power even with no peripherals connected.
I'll never use a Hyper product again. I bought a HyperDrive Duo 7-in-2 flush mount, and it heated up so badly that it arced and fried everything connected to my computer including the computer (2020 MBP), my audio interface, and a MIDI cable connected to my controller. I had to replace everything. Fortunately, Apple upgraded my bricked laptop with a brand new M1 MBP. I wasn't so lucky with the audio interface. I won't trust Hyper evermore.
hyper can output 2 Monitors, Anker just 1 right? Thats the price difference i guess.
Great video, may I ask what is the sd transfer speed for the Anker hub.
It’s is only UHS I. You’ll get faster speeds using a UHS II reader in one of the hub’s USB ports. I have a couple SD card reader videos. Believe me, the difference is worth it with a few GB of images on fast card.
This video will give you an idea of the hub’s reader speed and an sense of typical USB UHS II readers ruclips.net/video/4d5uz7Hy4hg/видео.html
Can u please share the link or name of the anker hub
It’s the Anker PowerExpand 8 in 1.

Excellent overview- thank you!
The idiot who designed my computer decided I only need one USB port but at least I can charge my laptop on either side. 💀
I'm getting a new Macbook Air M1 Next week too! thanks!
I can’t confirm, but note that some say they are having issues on M1 MacBooks with some hubs. I have not seen which hubs they are using. I’ve seen just a little on Reddit about this potential issue with M1 MacBooks. The thought is that users should unplug the hub from the computer before unplugging the power from the hub to avoid a power drop. The best practice might be to plug the power directly to the laptop until more is learned.
@@MatthewFortner Ok well are you saying that the ones in this video work for you
The Anker in this video is what I have stuck with. We all have so many different needs, Be sure you get the configuration of ports that work best for you.
Okay stud....are you purposely trying to promote Anker for some reason? HyperDrive has other hubs that outperform the Anker one you show here. You chose one of the HyperDrive models that offers less performance for what reason exactly?
Not at all. It was the one that I had. I emphasized the point about shopping around and make sure people know what specs the need and looks closely at what they are buying. Is there one you think holds up well at that price point?
Anker: $50
Hyper: $ What?!
i´ve just bought the anker for 24 usd v:

I have a hyperdrive and I love it. It’s different cuz it connects right into the side of my MacBook Pro. Nice video. Also, this will make you wonder who this is.. Was that Charles or Dodger?? 🤔
Hyper does make good products that are much reasonably priced. I don’t why that one is so high. That one started getting buggy and I couldn’t definitively point to the hub, but I’m pretty sure it’s faulty. Just didn’t seem right though to call it out without replacing it which would have been a weeks long delay. I know this because I ...well...I have another gadget review in the works that I am actually in the process of doing that. My special guest production assistant was Dodger. He snuck in and was absolutely silent until I turned the camera on. -_-

Great review! Important question: I hope none of them have pass through power (so powered from the wall, then themselves powering the computer)... Because I read horror stories about how this kind of arrangement bricks the new M1 Macbooks.
Most feature a pass through power. I’ve seen just a little on Reddit about this potential issue with M1 MacBooks. The thought is that users should unplug the hub from the computer before unplugging the power from the hub to avoid a power drop. Have you seen more information about this?
@@MatthewFortner Hey I know this is a year old thread but I just thought I'd both answer your question and throw in one of my own: there did used to be an issue with USB-C hubs/docks bricking M1 Macbooks but it has since been patched through an OS update. However, I was wondering if the hub's functionalities/performance was affected by being powered via the PD port or not? My MBP is already connected and powered through a Caldigit TS3 Plus docking station, but I need extra ports so I was planning to use the Anker model from your video (without using the PD).

You said that USB 3.0 is 10Gbit/s but 3.0 is 5Gbit/s. You need to do some fact checking before making videos.
Hi, there. I hope this helps. At about 2m22s in the video the Hyper is specified as 5 Gbit/s and the Anker as 10 Gbit/s, confirmed by their product information - and experienced in testing.
