The fact that Phil is in so many respects a terrible person but is somehow not truly evil is one of the many things that makes him and his story so fascinating. As you say, evil does often have a purpose, a goal, a drive. It's part of what makes a strong villain in fiction, even if that drive is toward something as simple as sowing chaos and upending the world order. Phil is too slothful to pursue a goal, to map out a campaign. He doesn't calculate or plan. He's not even self-aware enough to formulate a goal beyond "more money" and "more adulation". He's a child lighting ants on fire with a magnifying glass while he waits for his parents to bring home his first edition Wolverine toy and authentic Italian food for dinner. And yet, he's still managed to "fail upward" to such a degree that he makes six figures playing video games and talking to a camera for a living... and yet, it's increasingly becoming his own personal hell. This story is a modern tragedy, in the Greek and Shakespearan sense. The transactional nature of his relationships is, unfortunately, all too common among people who are some combination of narcissistic and socio/psychopathic. If he's capable of love at all, it's only in the most shallow sense: he'll pet Jasper, but he won't get him blood work; he'll spend time in the same room with Kat, but he won't help her excuse herself from a stream on which she's visibly miserable; he'll make a show of supporting Leanna's soap business, but he'll demand they give her a pill and leave her on the floor of her workplace when she's in acute mental distress. A high-functioning individual with one of these disorders would have the self-awareness to recognize this lack in themselves as abnormal and would take steps to conceal it in order to pass more effectively as a "normal" person. Phil does his best to pretend that he is a fully functioning adult, but segments like these and the times when we've seen him and his partners together look more akin to a young child playing "House" than anything resembling a mature, dynamic adult relationship. I do feel very sorry for Kat, as it's clear Phil only values her insofar as she can fulfill the role that his mother used to in the household (cooking and cleaning) and as a trophy he can hold up to demonstrate how mature and successful an adult he is. And yes, in this respect, I even feel some pity for Phil, as without intensive, prolonged work on himself and therapy (and perhaps not even then), he will never experience the depth of connection, emotion, and support that a healthy relationship can bring. I just listened to the tail end of my TIHYDP Starcraft stream. I couldn't listen to more than like...3 seconds. I feel so ashamed and embarrassed when I hit that level of intoxicated. Until I can master my decision making to be responsible with alcohol while streaming, I don't think it's a good idea for me to revisit that in this moment of my life. I'm really sorry.
